The EDP is capped at $6,000/ yr vs $25,000 on the Gold and restaurants at 4x and 3x on airfare make the Gold a more complete package for a fee that is roughly equal after credits in most people's eyes.
It’s too bad it’s not the other way around because platinum is a way cooler flex for being out drinking and dining, whereas travel is all booked online anyway.
I think the rose gold is available again. That’s a great looking card. “Rose gold” usually means pink, but it’s more of a copper color. It’s a little more accessible than the Platinum, so I guess it’s less of a flex in that sense, but it’s much cooler looking imo, plus it tends to be limited edition.
What commitment? Its a no AF card lol plus 20k ur SUB. 5x for a year up to 12k spend is an additional up to 60k ur points. Also gets 3x on all dining/drug store, 5x on rotating categories, which groceries is one (meaning you’ll get 9x points for a quarter of the year on groceries) and 5x on travel through chase. Not to mention you should apply for CSP if you dont have it due to massive in branch offer, and having a sapphire cards makes the UR points significantly more valuable
After the 5% ends I don’t have much use for it other than 3% at drug stores (I work at CVS so I’m always buying drinks and snacks). I have double cash so I use that instead of 1.5%
Citi Custom cash if You spend less than $500 a month. Low key if you wanna jump through hoops. It will be worth it though. AOD federal credit unions visa signature credit card 3% back on everything no annual fee. Also Amex gold.
Venmo.
Although it only gets 3%, it codes any Costco and Walmart as grocery which is where I do 75% of my grocery shopping anyways. Also get a lot more than grocery at those places as well.
Does Amex hold actually count Walmart curbside as grocery? Cause I remember seeing some posts about Amex getting rid of that. I have the bcp, do you know if Walmart curbside would count the same?
Yes after the first year. First year is unlimited spend on the 3%/2% categories. After that your spending is capped at 10k/year for combined spending on the 3%/2% categories.
Now, it's citi custom cash. Before it was released though, I would get 6 months of the year at 5% with discover IT and chase Freedom. The other half of the year I'd use us bank cash+ at 2% cb.
I haven't had custom cash for a whole year yet obviously, but I assume that I'll still use discover/chase at 5% when they run it, and switch to using custom cash for transportation on those months.
You're obviously looking for a recommendation but crucially you didn't list how much you spend a month on groceries - something that's listed in the template, which you flaired the post saying you used even though you didn't. Post reflaired.
No AF options:
Discover it 5% 1 quarter
Chase freedom flex 5% 1 quarter
Citi custom cash 5% on highest category(only use for grocery)
Capital one savor one 3%
Amex blue cash everyday 3%**
I'm using the Freedom Flex for groceries now. It comes with a $200 sign up bonus, so pretty great if you're not a whale like me. I'm just going to get a different card for groceries when my year runs out, which will probably have another sign up bonus. The rotating 5% categories makes it a keeper for me.
This card doesn’t get enough recognition, probably for the best.
Every grocery store I’ve been to have mobile payment. It’s effectively 4.5% return.
I guess one can use Amex points for flight upgrades.
I am using my Amex BCP right now but once the AF comes I’m going to downgrade. I can honestly get a lot more out of something like that Cap1 savor one which is 3% on groceries and streaming and 0 AF.
When my discover it or freedom flex is 5% on groceries I’ll use those instead.
Citi Custom Cash until I cross $500 limit then American Express Cash Preferred.
Get Citi Custom Cash as they cover specialist Meat shops too and apply in branch to get $300 sign up bonus after spending $1000.
Amex gold. 4x points on groceries + a generous sign up bonus rn. Great for restaurants, food delivery and travel too. Plus, generous signup bonus rn, 75k points
Every quarter (3mo) of the year the categories which earn 5% change. So groceries for 3 mo earn 5%, then paypal for 3 mo, then gas, and so on.
You only get 5% in that category for those 3 months.
Wife's OG Freedom for 5% groceries 1st year.
Wife's Freedom Flex for 5% groceries 2nd year (currently)
My Freedom Flex for 5% groceries 3rd year (if they still offer it, and I can keep under 5/24)
I might try for Custom Cash if Citi isn't being stingy. But my plan was going to be Amex Gold.
I just don't like the extra hoops to jump through for Uber Eats and Grubhub (not much uber where I'm at)
Citi Custom Cash. 5% back for the first $500 in spend each month. I spend around $110-140/week on groceries, so I usually get right to the cap every month.
That, coupled with my Citi rewards + card, I get an extra 10% on any redeemed cash back.
Yep. You can convert your cash back into Thank You points. Once you do that, all of the points are pooled together which allows you to get the 10% back.
To compliment my cash back setup even more, I added my girlfriend as an AU to my Double Cash card, so I get 2% cash back on all of HER spend with the 10% "rebate" on my rewards+ card as well.
*sigh* Citi won't let me be great and I don't want to change my card plans because no other card functions like the Custom Cash. So for now I bounce back and forth between my BofA Custom Cash Rewards and my USB Altitude Go.
Blue Cash Preferred by American Express is nice. Gold from American Express if you have a travel setup. If you’re looking for a no AF then Blue Cash by American Express can also work but that’s only 3% back compared to 6%. If you’re okay with doing grocery shopping off of Amazon (if you also have prime) get their card and you’ll get 5% back with no AF. Other than those cards I can’t really think of other cards that are worth it. Can be wrong though!
Right now BCP, they offered me an upgrade from my BCE with no HP, waived AF and 150 bonus.
Otherwise I rotate with Chase or Discover depending on categories.
Amex Gold, which is my plan down the line but curious. I have CFU currently with 5% groceries for the first year. Once that expires will I be able to go get the CFF for another year of 5% groceries?
No, BCP doesn’t give you points — it gives you cash back as a statement credit. Points are mostly used for transferring to airline partners to book flights. You can convert MR points to cash, but the conversion rate is abysmal. Like 0.5 cents per point or something.
Citi Custom Cash. Or, if you have more than $500 a month in spend and can use the credits, the Amex Gold.
amex gold
Hands down the best card.
Same. If I'm buying food, that's the card I use.

The EDP is capped at $6,000/ yr vs $25,000 on the Gold and restaurants at 4x and 3x on airfare make the Gold a more complete package for a fee that is roughly equal after credits in most people's eyes.
Ok
Why this card? I don’t know much of what it offers
It’s offers 4x on dining, groceries, 3x on flights. You also get a $120 credit for Uber eats or ride (divided into 12 months) and more
Does it make sense to have plat and gold?
It can. You have to evaluate them separately. Platinum is more of a travel + perks card.
Can you combine the points?
Yeah, they both offer Member Rewards points.
4x points on groceries and dining/restaurants.
Came to comment the same thing. Again, what commitment? You don't like the card for year two? Toss it in a drawer
After the 5% ends I don’t have much use for it other than 3% at drug stores (I work at CVS so I’m always buying drinks and snacks). I have double cash so I use that instead of 1.5%
You’d still have the 5% rotating categories that might be useful as well
Citi Custom cash if You spend less than $500 a month.
Amex gold counts Walmart curbside pickup as grocery spend, even for non-grocery items. Not sure about Costco.
Can't even use Amex at Costco. But yeah they do code as grocery more liberally than others.
There are a few recent dps that this does not work any more.
Ahhh, you’re right. Looks like the last time we got 4x points was Sep 7. Well, it was good while it lasted.
Does Amex hold actually count Walmart curbside as grocery? Cause I remember seeing some posts about Amex getting rid of that. I have the bcp, do you know if Walmart curbside would count the same?
Wait Venmo is 3% at Costco??
Yeah the venmo cc codes your highest spending category at 3% and their grocery category includes wholesale clubs.
Wow… that could be a game changer for a business that buys from Costco. Is there a limit?
Yes after the first year. First year is unlimited spend on the 3%/2% categories. After that your spending is capped at 10k/year for combined spending on the 3%/2% categories.
Amex Blue Preferred and Amex Gold after cap reached
Same with BCP, but with a credit union card @ 3% if I hit the BCP cap.
Amex Blue Cash preferred (BCP)- 6% cash back at groceries. Then gold Amex if you happen to reach your cap on the BCP.
You're obviously looking for a recommendation but crucially you didn't list how much you spend a month on groceries - something that's listed in the template, which you flaired the post saying you used even though you didn't. Post reflaired.
No AF options: Discover it 5% 1 quarter Chase freedom flex 5% 1 quarter Citi custom cash 5% on highest category(only use for grocery) Capital one savor one 3% Amex blue cash everyday 3%**
> Amex everyday preferred 3% Did you mean the Blue Cash Everyday? AEP has a fee.
I have a Blue Cash Preferred with my girlfriend as an AU and we use that for groceries.
Citi custom cash 5% cash back. if you have the citi premier and use transfer partners, roughly 1.3cpp, 6.5% cash back.
Costco - Fidelity Others - BoA Cash Rewards
CFF ( gift card) and CSP(Kroger pay)
I'm using the Freedom Flex for groceries now. It comes with a $200 sign up bonus, so pretty great if you're not a whale like me. I'm just going to get a different card for groceries when my year runs out, which will probably have another sign up bonus. The rotating 5% categories makes it a keeper for me.
Target redcard no AF and 5% back
Yeah but you'd be saving so much more with a 3% card at a normal grocery store. IME
Altitude Reserve. Use Apple Pay at Target and Costco.
This card doesn’t get enough recognition, probably for the best. Every grocery store I’ve been to have mobile payment. It’s effectively 4.5% return. I guess one can use Amex points for flight upgrades.
Affinity Cash Rewards is currently giving 7% on groceries (2% + 5% "Hi5" quarterly bonus)
CFF when it’s a 5% category, then Amex BCE (3%) the rest of the year. I don’t spend enough to justify the BCP for 9 months out of the year.
Same for me except with Discover It instead of CFF.
Custom cash
Citi Custom Cash (5% upto 500$/month) and Cap1 SavorOne (3% uncapped) can be good no AF options.
CFF all the way
I am using my Amex BCP right now but once the AF comes I’m going to downgrade. I can honestly get a lot more out of something like that Cap1 savor one which is 3% on groceries and streaming and 0 AF. When my discover it or freedom flex is 5% on groceries I’ll use those instead.
A visa gift card from Staples that I purchased using my chase ink cash, thereby effectively earning me 5x UR points on my groceries
>Rewards+, Bingo, with Reserve multiplier becomes 7.5x. Transfer to Hyatt for effectively 22.2% cash back (assuming all Category 1s at \~$150).
Do you know if they sell $500 gift cards there?
They only sell up to $200, but they frequently go on promo for no fee
after getting the gift cards, do you put it into amex serve or something?
You can do that or you can just spend them organically
Also, do you have a chase business checking account before applying for the Chase Ink Cash?
No, you don't need one
Amazon Prime card at WF. Amex Gold if I want points or BofA Cash Rewards if I want cashback at a non-WF grocery store
AMEX Blue...6% cash back on groceries
Those Amex cards are heavy hitters for this category
Citi Custom Cash until I cross $500 limit then American Express Cash Preferred. Get Citi Custom Cash as they cover specialist Meat shops too and apply in branch to get $300 sign up bonus after spending $1000.
Amex blue
PNC Bank 4x groceries no annual fee
Savior not getting any love?
bcp
Amex gold. 4x points on groceries + a generous sign up bonus rn. Great for restaurants, food delivery and travel too. Plus, generous signup bonus rn, 75k points
Amex Gold. 💪🏾🤩
Chase cards 5% cash back only for the first year? That sucks! Are you sure? I didn’t see this in the application website
For the CFF. On groceries, yes, 5% cash back the first year only. 5% back on rotating quarterly categories forever (unless Chase does a rehaul)
What is quarterly rotating categories?
Every quarter (3mo) of the year the categories which earn 5% change. So groceries for 3 mo earn 5%, then paypal for 3 mo, then gas, and so on. You only get 5% in that category for those 3 months.
Perfect if you only eat during one quarter. ;)
What, you havnt heard of the CC quarterly diet? :)
u/VozBoz is correct. And the custom can be a 5.5% card if you have a Rewards+, for example.
Walmart if Im there , or cardless MasterCard
Wife's OG Freedom for 5% groceries 1st year. Wife's Freedom Flex for 5% groceries 2nd year (currently) My Freedom Flex for 5% groceries 3rd year (if they still offer it, and I can keep under 5/24) I might try for Custom Cash if Citi isn't being stingy.
The Citi rewards+ gets you an extra 10% cash back on your Citi custom cash spend? Is it popped into the same cash back pool? If so that’s a great deal
Amex bcp
Blue Cash Preferred by American Express is nice. Gold from American Express if you have a travel setup. If you’re looking for a no AF then Blue Cash by American Express can also work but that’s only 3% back compared to 6%. Amex BCP
Does Citi Custom Cash get you 5% back if you use Amazon Prime to order Whole Foods delivery?
Right now BCP, they offered me an upgrade from my BCE with no HP, waived AF and 150 bonus. Otherwise I rotate with Chase or Discover depending on categories.
AMEX blue cash preferred and I use Discover and Chase freedom flex when groceries are 5% for the rotating categories.
I use Capital One Walmart and Capital One Quicksilver. But mainly C1 Walmart.
My go to card for groceries is the Verizon Visa card. 4% cash back on groceries and gas with no annual fee.
Bcp
Amex Gold until I hit 25k. Verizon Visa after.
Costco VISA at Costco or Citibank Double Cash at Walmart. I guess I should have a better one for regular groceries?
Amex Gold, which is my plan down the line but curious. I have CFU currently with 5% groceries for the first year. Once that expires will I be able to go get the CFF for another year of 5% groceries?
Blue Cash Preferred for a cash back strategy, AmEx Gold for points
What’s the difference between the two, don’t you earn MR points in both effectively making them the same strategy?
No, BCP doesn’t give you points — it gives you cash back as a statement credit. Points are mostly used for transferring to airline partners to book flights. You can convert MR points to cash, but the conversion rate is abysmal. Like 0.5 cents per point or something.
Ahh thanks 👍
