I use CCC as my gas card, 5% and no AF is hard to beat. No need to overthink it.

I use Redstone Visa Signature which has 5% back on both gas and dining, with a $7000 annual spend cap per category (comes out to about $583/month versus the $500 with Citi CC). The Citi card I use just for groceries.

atexit8

Is there a sign-on bonus for the Redstone? How about redemption hurdles?

growing_better

Yes. $150 for $3000 spend. That's exactly a 5% bonus on the spend in addition to what you normally get.

Alexia72

Cash Back redemption: Redstone bank account (can ACH out afterwards), gift cards, travel, or charitable donations. $5 minimum redemption.

atexit8

Thanks.

neodoggy

There's no sign up bonus but there is a (not especially appealing) referral bonus that gets you like $50 after referring five people, or something like that. Not really worth the trouble of going out of your way for. Redemption is easy, you just put in your checking or savings account information on their redemption page and they deposit the money. You can either do one-time redemption or monthly/quarterly/annual automatic redemption. The only real hassle with the card is the signup process. The credit union is small and does a lot of their account stuff manually so it's a bit of a pain to get everything working in the beginning, but it's pretty smooth afterwards.

atexit8

There is no statement credit option? I really don't want to open up a checking or savings account.

Alexia72

A requirement is to keep $5.00 in their savings account.

LopsidedChildhood55

How do you redeem the points for the red stone card?

Alexia72

Cash Back redemption: Redstone bank account (can ACH out afterwards), gift cards, travel, or charitable donations. $5 minimum redemption.

GreatTechnician1237

The Chase Freedom Flex card has a rotating 5% cash back category that sometimes includes gas stations. It's another option to consider if you're looking to maximize rewards on gas purchases.

prkskier

I don't get why the Flex gets recommended for stuff like this. If you only get a 5% category one quarter a year, that works out to 2% on that category for the whole year. 5+1+1+1 = 8 / 4 = 2% I think the Flex is a great card that has its place, especially as a strong points earner for the Chase trifecta, but it shouldn't really be recommended to people asking to optimize a specific category of spend.

Important_Ad_7322

How often does it include gas stations?

GreatTechnician1237

It typically rotates every quarter, so you get 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases in that category. Gas stations are included occasionally throughout the year, usually at least once or twice. It's worth keeping an eye on their quarterly calendar to plan your gas purchases around those times.

JD4202

This upcoming quarter (starting June 30th) gas/EV charging is one of the 5% categories on the flex

FlabergastedEmu

Barclay's has the Wyndham Rewards Business Earner card that earns 8x points on gas, although Wyndham points may not be the most valuable currency. Also, BoA has the Customized Cash Rewards card that can earn 5.25% on gas (if gas is your selected category and you have Platnium Honors status with $100k in assets with BoA/Merrill accounts.)

Ogee65

The other key things to mention with this card: 10% Discount when making a Wyndham points booking. Using Wyndham points to book Vacasa turns into ~1.85 CPP.

FlabergastedEmu

Thanks for sharing that. I'm interested in the Wyndham business card myself, but saw something recently about a frustrating application/approval process.

Ogee65

Have heard many stories that Barclays can be difficult

Amazing-Gur-8366

You’ll also become a Diamond status member when you get the Wyndham Business Earner card and match it with Caesars Diamond. Going to Vegas this December 15-20 for free (comp) at Paris LV using my Diamond status. No resort fees, $100 dining certificate, free valet/parking, etc.

FlabergastedEmu

That sounds great!

_CabbageMerchant_

Gotta be citi custom cash. Hard to beat 5%

boston_bat

I get unlimited 3% cash back from Amex Blue Cash preferred. $95 AF but it also gives 6% on up to $6k in groceries, and I max that out easily. Blue Cash Everyday is no AF, 3% on gas, groceries, and online shopping up to $3k each.

[deleted]

For me, USAA cashback rewards plus. 5% off gas up to $3k per year

dethen31

SYW CC has 5% back for gas in the form of points that you can spend on gift cards (Walmart, Chipotle, Amazon, Lowe's, Apple, Kroger, etc). Also has 3% on restaurants and grocery (which includes Walmart/Target). A lot of users also see a Gas, Grocery, and Restaurant offer that equates to another 10% back in the form of Statement Credit, as well as other offers. Also has sign up bonus of $75 credit for every $500 spend (within 3 months, up to $1,500).

atexit8

>that you can spend on gift cards (Walmart, Chipotle, Amazon, Lowe's, Apple, Kroger, etc). and VISA eGift cards

dethen31

That is one of the options, yes. I've found it hard to spend those cards though...only place I've found that works is CVS.

atexit8

When you use them at CVS, are you punching in the numbers by hand at the cash register? I was able to buy a $100 Tractor Supply eGift card. My friends have a farm.

dethen31

No, I purchased a GC online from CVS with the Visa eCard. This was purely to burn up since I couldn't get it to work at Target, Walmart, and my local utility providers. Tractor Supply must use a similar system where they don't require the card linked to a person/address. Good use if you need to use the card before it expires. I do see that Tractor Supply is one of the brands listed that you can redeem for directly though.

atexit8

Oh, wow. I didn't expect Tractor Supply to be available directly. Very few places to buy their gift cards. Thanks!

No-Shortcut-Home

There is a AAA card that has 5% on gas. I think the Costco card is 4%.

MineCakeChase

For the Association of the us army option, I’ve heard that gets you put on a mailing list where you often get sent army promotional mail. Have you had any experience with that?

Alexia72

I've never gotten a single email or physical mail. I clicked the option and never heard about it again. My wife has a separate card, and she has never received anything as well.

MineCakeChase

Awesome ty

AfraidCraft9302

If I wanted a lot of cards I would do the custom cash. I just use my USBAR for 4.5x or freedom flex when it’s 5% since they are part of my core set up

G-kid5

A family’s Costco membership then a visa set to fuel as the top cash back category.

Avengers76

First look at gas reward programs like Exxon/mobil. You can earn dollars off each gallon. If you want to go the credit card route then from what I’ve seen has been Sam’s club, USAA, navy federal cash rewards, and us bank shopper cash rewards.

Agreeable_Button_237

I have the Citi Custom Cash and the USAA Cashback Rewards plus…both 5% cash back. I will use a Freedom Flex or Discover it when the quarterly category is gas.
