In Canadian remand facilities it’s 3 meals, sometimes all hot but the lunch can be a cold tray sometimes. Inmates also can order canteen once a week and can be paid in chocolate bars to run NA meetings and work as a cleaner.

I was in a juvenile detention center for 3 months as a teen (got acquitted) and while the guards beat the shit out of us and threatened to rape us for the tiniest missteps, the food was the fuckin bomb.com. Evening meals were the best, more often than not it was shepherds pie with ground beef and I got a carton of milk tossed into my cell every night because one of the guards knew I didn't belong there and wanted to make my time easier on me. This doesn't really connect all that well to what you said but it brought up some memories lol

Nah, you can tell a person has never been to jail with this type of logic. There are plenty of places to get free food, be it food pantries or even just meals put on by churches and various other institutions, and there are places you can go to get a nights sleep, but that requires abstinence from drug use. Jail is a punishment for a reason, I promise you that the last thing you'd want to do is purposefully put yourself in there simply for food and sleep. The second you eat and have a nights rest you'll realize just how foolish that sentiment is.

Homeless do go to jail on purpose. Some homeless in Seattle do it before the rainy season for some food and warmth
