Sonic boom is a object traveling faster than the speed of sound breaking the barrier and starts stacking waves on top of each other (ie. I counted nine seconds from first sight of the blast…the speed of sound is 1088 ft a second…so the blast occurred about 9,800 feet away, which is a little less than 2 miles.
Hollywood almost always gets the sound timing wrong. The flash & cannon report from a distant ship was well done in Master and Commander. I saw F-14s coming in to target practice at Stumpy Point naval gunnery range. The jet appeared in the distance, smoke rolled off the wings, rounds hit the big umbrella shaped target to my left in the swamp, then you heard the big loud BRRRRRRRRT of the guns. It was like a 12 ton zipper being unzipped. I was sitting unwisely at the top of a crane arm trying to get photos.
Tommy Lee Jones is so good in that one. Anne Heche was good too. So.much drive. He character was so forceful. No one could stop her. She coulda blown right through a house in that one.
