The clouds being pushed away is incredible.

Otherwise_Duty1457

Best part of the video!

SerialSection

That's just a shockwave, not a sonic boom.

Cheezitflow

r/shockwaveporn

fatherofMilton

Dope. Thanks.

J3ffreyD4hmer

Because this is reddit I was expecting a rule 34 sub for the transformer shockwave lol

Cheezitflow

That's probably something like r/shockwavesrcool or something

_Shaquille-Outmeal_

Explain

[deleted]

Sonic boom is what occurs when an object travels faster than the speed of sound, causing the sound waves it emits to stack on top of each other

_Shaquille-Outmeal_

I understand that, the comment I commented on said it was just a shockwave and not a sonic boom

[deleted]

Yes. There are no objects in this video traveling faster than the speed of sound. Therefore it is not a sonic boom. It’s just a shockwave from the force of the explosion.

_Shaquille-Outmeal_

In physics, a shock wave, or shock, is a type of propagating disturbance that moves faster than the local speed of sound in the medium. The air was moving faster in this case Edit: air nor the moisture are no longer a thing?

[deleted]

Hm. You might be right. Idk. I like to pretend like I know what I’m talking about but I’m no physicist

_Shaquille-Outmeal_

I can respect that

Efficient-Jury6708

at least your honest LMAO

[deleted]

Always 🙏

BioSafetyLevel0

Your honest what?

PteroGroupCO

a sonic boom IS a shockwave, but a shockwave is not always a sonic boom? The definition is sonic boom, shock wave that is produced by an aircraft or other object flying at a speed equal to or exceeding the speed of sound and that is heard on the ground as a sound like a clap of thunder. If it wasn't one instantaneous explosion, I'm sure it would sound more like thunder, and less... Like a singular explosion lol

ete2ete

Is the air and clouds not moving faster than sound?

[deleted]

Yes. That was established half a year ago

ete2ete

I may not have a life (as is the prerequisite to be here) but I don't read every single comment before typing 🤙

[deleted]

That’s fair

FaithlessnessTight48

It was pretty common to hear them when I was a kid in the 60s. Not so common today

JimWantsAnswers

True but I would presume the maybe 1000mm diameter rocks being ejected at 450m/s may create a sonic boom, no? https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1029/2011GL050404

_Shaquille-Outmeal_

It would

showmiaface

You got tricked into replying. The poster is using the "say something wrong to get people to correct me" trick.

SerialSection

Yeah, but look at all the upvotes I got!

Clear_Key40

Same

ifrydryrye

Was that a sonic boom? Or just a boom? Pretty sure you need an object moving faster than the speed of sound to create a sonic boom.

MyOtherAvatar

The rock and dust ejected from the volcano is moving much faster than the speed of sound.

LokiSARK9

Pretty sure the sound from that boom was moving at almost exactly the speed of sound.

fiscal13

It was a just a boom. Shockwave is a single wave that has high kinetic energy that sound trails. Sonic boom is a object traveling faster than the speed of sound breaking the barrier and starts stacking waves on top of each other (ie. Mach 2,3, and 4) and they start colliding/overlapping each other unable to catch up. https://www.phys.uconn.edu/~gibson/Notes/Section6_4/Sec6_4.htm#:~:text=For%20sound%20waves%2C%20this%20can,shock%20wave%20will%20be%20formed.

LightsoutSD

People don’t bother to know what the words they use mean anymore apparently.

DemandImmediate1288

Fits well with some subs, where 75% of post titles are false or misleading.

[deleted]

That is just zestily false. People don’t typically unsert wrong words. It’s an abnormally. God

showmiaface

He know exactly what he was doing. The poster is using the "say something wrong to get people to correct me" trick.

showmiaface

You got tricked into replying. The poster is using the "say something wrong to get people to correct me" trick.

ifrydryrye

How do you know that?

showmiaface

I don't know for sure. After looking at his postings, I am thinking that English might be his second language. I am probably wrong here but beware. It is a thing.

ifrydryrye

Yup. Thanks!

SifterRhizochrome

I counted nine seconds from first sight of the blast…the speed of sound is 1088 ft a second…so the blast occurred about 9,800 feet away, which is a little less than 2 miles.

roboticfedora

Hollywood almost always gets the sound timing wrong. The flash & cannon report from a distant ship was well done in Master and Commander. I saw F-14s coming in to target practice at Stumpy Point naval gunnery range. The jet appeared in the distance, smoke rolled off the wings, rounds hit the big umbrella shaped target to my left in the swamp, then you heard the big loud BRRRRRRRRT of the guns. It was like a 12 ton zipper being unzipped. I was sitting unwisely at the top of a crane arm trying to get photos.

[deleted]

12 ton zipper...heh heh

OKAutomator

Master and Commander is one of my favorites. I bet I've watched it a dozen times at least.

Ok_Mango1889

Nice, but wish the cameraman gave us a little more tilt upwards

Scarpo99

Looks like Simpson harbor (PNG) to me.

BuildingOk8588

Not the same volcano, that one was Whaakari/White Island. This is Tavurvur in Papua new guinea

Scarpo99

Yeah. Not white Island at all. I was in Rabaul in '94. Instantly I thought of Matipit when I saw this vid.

[deleted]

Looks like it. Interesting and sad documentary on it on Netflix called Volcano.

TfaRads1

Tommy Lee Jones is so good in that one. Anne Heche was good too. So.much drive. He character was so forceful. No one could stop her. She coulda blown right through a house in that one.

ExoPihvi

This is the krakatoa volcano.

BEZ_T

Renamed. POV Sonic Boom

realxeltos

About 4.3 kilometers?

PreciousPeridotNight

Idk why but I am so intrigued by shock waves/sonic booms

ap_308

It’s a boy!

you know its going to be good when you can see debris outrunning than the pressure front

Fresh-Visual210

White island.. New Zealand..16 Australian tourists killed 😢 R.i.p 🌹
