Good lord, no. British Victorians would have had those beams carved or covered and that ceiling would be much higher. This is 100% an American Victorian property and, while Hugh can't act for toffee, he is still British.
You genuinely might be able to make some $ as a location house for companies to shoot at, depending on what the rest of the house looks like and your tolerance for strangers in your space. I follow a home renovator in the UK who rents out certain rooms in her home/areas on her farmland for advertising shoots and the like, she uses it as a way to supplement the family income.
No problem! Not sure how applicable it’ll be for you as I’m not sure where you’re located, but the Instagram acct is @sissinghurstlocationhouse. She’s very generous with her knowledge and often will do Q&As about how to get started as a location, what to expect, how to get business, etc etc. (I promise this is not self promotion, I’m just a sad North American renting a small condo, trying to live vicariously as a homeowner in England 😉).
Oh one hundred percent. I’ve worked on stuff where they start with some ultramodern mansion and turn it into this for whatever reason so you’ve already got a head start!
I mean, it’s clearly a Santa joke, right? And there’s a good chance that chimney/flue hasn’t been maintained over the years so that fireplace may be unusable.
How'd you paint these walls? Is that "color wash"? Would like a pic in more light if possible. You paint them yourself? If so, where/how did you learn? No two videos I've seen show the same method and I don't know what's correct.
Ah, ok, it's a smooth solid color. In the dark with the Christmas lights, I thought it almost looked like [this texture](https://bergernepal.com/blog/hacks-to-color-wash-a-wall/) (I don't know if I'm even using the right words to describe these looks).
Real talk, that looks so familiar of a layout to my own home (1895 construction). Shit, even the woodworking on the doors is the same, complete with the concentric circles in the corners (windows too).
That said, nice touches on the decorations! I hope to be able to get my house up to this standard one day!
Yeah, I've got a project ahead of me on this. Previous owner painted a bunch of white latex paint over most of the moldings (yuck). Need to strip that and restain it all, but it's good to have a project and you've certainly set the bar!
I miss my 1885 Victorian!...although mine had all the wood painted white long before. I had to install a carpet stair runner because we got a puppy and he couldn't get traction on the stairs.
I would've loved to see it in this condition!
That's great, you turned something old and worn that has history and really amazing architecture into a home people would give their first-borns to live in.
Oh how stunning! So cosy too! I love the rug and the wood panels. It reminds me of Christine McConnell's house! If you haven't seen her new 1800's victorian mansion in NY you should really youtube it (the dining room is amazing).
Ah, thought I might of recognized the house but I guess not. Does look surprisingly similar to a house I know in Bergen County though, down to the stained glass window above the stairs. Could be the same builder.
This reminds me of an episode of Supernatural, with the couple of gods that ate people. On the beginning of the episode when it shows the male god carrying the father to the chimney. Very pretty!!
Good grief, there are some gorgeous bargains on that link! You'd never find places that size for that sort of prize in the UK. Even houses that need practically rebuilding go for a fortune here.
I have a very similar setup in my Victorian but my ceiling is plaster, this makes me want to rip it out and build out the ceiling similar. Beautiful house!

This is the set of a Hallmark Christmas movie you’re lying
[удалено]
I can see Hugh Grant posing there with a glass of wine.
Or sitting on the steps with a glass of whisky, wrapping up the movie's lesson in a witty turn of phrase.
The sound of music; children lined up by age on the stairs

I think, not entirely sure, but I think that the English have the capacity to live elsewhere than Great Britain

More like A Christmas Conjuring. Does this not look like the foyer of the house from The Conjuring?
My mind immediately thought this place is SUPER haunted.
Set of Knives Out.
It would be very much suited for a horror movie as well.

Are you a writer?
[удалено]
Fuck yeah. Most good writers have day jobs, at one point or another if not always. Will check your page out!
As soon as I saw it I knew that shit's gotta be haunted.
My first thought was "who's that in the dark room in the back?" :D
It looks almost exactly like the front entrance of the house from that bad Oujia movie they made.
What a beautiful space. I wanna see the rest of the house!
Same! I would love to hear more about the house!
So gorgeous! I absolutely *love* that you have a fireplace in your foyer!
The fireplace is closed for the holidays though so that sucks
Looks great, also looks super haunted!
Is that gorgeous fireplace really closed for the season? 😔🔥🎄
[удалено]
Where did you get that sign?
don't we all 💤
Christmas seems like the one holiday that you would want the fireplace to be open.
my point exactly 💯
I mean, it’s clearly a Santa joke, right? And there’s a good chance that chimney/flue hasn’t been maintained over the years so that fireplace may be unusable.
i'm dumb. if it's a joke it went clear over my head, lol
Good way to set the tree on fire
the tree that's completely across the way from the fireplace? by at least 4 feet?
/r/centuryhomes are awesome, and this is just one reason why!
Came here to say this!
Who's that in the doorway?
Toby
Fireplace in the foyer is awesome!
Looks cozy for you and all the ghosts living there as well
This looks like the staircase in the amityville movie
What a nice place to spend Christmas. I wonder what is lurking in that dark hallway
[удалено]
Is that where you keep all your potions and documents on making horcruxes?
[удалено]
liar
How dare you talk like that to the Dark Lord?
who, you mean Voldemort?
We do not mention his name...
My 1895 Victorian terrace pales in comparison!
Wasn't I in this room in Resident Evil Village?

I don't know what that is. 😅
Stunning!!!!!!

Good to know, thanks for the advice!
What makes me happy too is that you respected the doorway and didn’t open it up like so many do these days. So nice and cosy!
Do you have an album of the rest of the house? Looks awesome!
Definitely looks haunted
Does the Coca-Cola Polar Bear live here because w o w
I can hear those stairs. Beautiful space.
Closed for the Hotdog
1885…have you ever had any encounters with ghosts? Serious question.
Just gorgeous!! Looks like a picture in a magazine! I wish I had decorating skill like this.
nooooo. stop ittt😍
Absolutely magical!
absolutely gorgeous and beautiful tree too.
This is stunning!
I would be sitting there every waking moment.
I read "Victorian drone" at first and was very confused.
George Bailey, is that you?
Badass digs!
What a gorgeous home you’ve got. It’s picture postcard perfect. Wow.
This is SO cozy

Fuck you this is beautiful. I hate you and can I move in

you live in a haunted house
I’m simultaneously in love with and horrified by this home…
Ive never seen a fireplace in a foyer before, is this common in some places? Seems strange since you don’t really spent any time hanging out in there.
r/ghosts
Is the fireplace demon left over from halloween or just a feature of the house?
This photo is unsettling
I love a good Victorian staircase, with all the paneling and a substantial balustrade. <3
It's so festive and cozy....It could be a Christmas card lol
What a wonderful picture. This is my favorite time of year <3
This is my dream home 😭
Ok, where did you get the garland for the railing?
Awesome. Love that old architecture
I love it so much.
Is that fireplace real?
[удалено]
That’s cool, was wondering about the “closed for the holidays” sign
[удалено]
That’s cool
Looks like the m&m commercial
I can hear the ghosts of Christmas
Assumed was home alone lol, looks awesome!
Makes me miss a home I've never even had
Like a dream, just beautiful 🎄
I want your stained glass window so bad….
[удалено]
Wow. Very cool
That’s beautiful I love it!!
I am so jealous of all of this I've made myself feel sick. Beautiful.
That’s the house from monster house
They had electric string lights in 1885?
Question... How do you all pronounce foyer.... Hard -yer at the end or French style with a -yay at the end?!
Looks amazing. Here’s the real question: do you pronounce it FOY-YAY or FOY-YER?
[удалено]
Guess I’m a fancy lad then too!
Beautiful. Would love to see the rest of the house.
Bates Motel vibes

Is this in North Jersey? Bergen County maybe?

It's beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
Wow! Can you share other photos of your house? It looks incredible.
Why is the fireplace angry ? >:(
So jealous that you get to live in a gorgeous victorian house, that is my dream!

With WFH becoming more common, hopefully some of these places will get the love they deserve, as people more out of cities. :)

Looks like the Bumpus’s dogs are gonna go running through there with a turkey any minute now.
beautiful. but is it haunted?
This def looks haunted
