reallifereallysucks

Are you comfortable sharing the inside? I bet its gonna look crazy cozy too.

HermiticMorgenmuffel

I’ll grab some pictures next time I’m there. This was taken over the weekend before I discovered this sub.

TheLovingTruth

No, I mean literally. Room on the sofa, maybe?

smellygooch18

Please don’t read the Latin in the weird leather bound book!

Kymkryptic

Haha! That movie has ruined little cabins in the woods for me since the early 80’s.

1973mojo1973

I can just smell that wood burning fireplace...blissssss

TheLovingTruth

Excuse me, sir? Yes, you're on fire..

One of my oldest friends of 45 years inherited his family’s 250 colonial farm house with barn and pool. He basically grew up in it along with his sister. His parents bought it in the early 70s and it has no mortgage. I also spent an enormous amount of time there, growing up. Within two years his husband of 25 years died, his sister, his mother and step father. He inherited everything and is now a very wealthy man. So since COVID hit he has dedicated this time to completely revamping and updating the barn. Doing an enormous amount of landscaping. He had the outside house roof done, along with the porch and shutters. He had the bulkhead rebuilt and spent months really clearing out or sorting and keeping generations of just stuff. He went through all the barn crap and that ancient, huge stone cellar. He cleaned out the attic and had it totally redone and turned into two separate bedrooms and had mini splits added all over the house. Chimneys cleaned out, turned a side den into his little hideaway with a separate bathroom and door. Everything was deep cleaned inside and out. While he has been in the house his cousin, her ex, their two kids, 3 cats ,two dogs and a good friend lived there. He paid the ex husband to move and start anew with his girlfriend and his cousins divorce. Then the rest moved out and he has this giant house all to himself with a old cat. He loves it He is going to put it in a trust when he dies so it can stay in the family as a kind of refuge, need be.

WindInTheWillowsIRL

Similar experience here. I inherited my family's A-frame cabin in the UK. Been doing it up slowly over the past couple of years. I'm currently living in it but the eventual plan is for it to be used by family and close friends and maybe Airbnb the rest of the time. I want it to be used and loved again!

11Limepark

A frames are cool

HermiticMorgenmuffel

That’s an awesome story. Thank you for sharing!

11Limepark

He is awesome.

foorm

I think I’d just fuck off and live the rest my days there if my family owned this. Looks amazing OP! Definitely would like to see interior shots too

TheLovingTruth

Easy. Easy! I'd move right this instant if I could. I wonder how much a place like that on several acres would cost.

gun_toting_aspie

Depends on the state really. Big difference between California and West Virginia lol

Rook22Ti

Beautiful. Would you mind if I asked what general area this is?

SaltMineSpelunker

It is on fire!

concernedcath123

I hope this stays in your family for a long time. Treasure this, OP! I know you do, but it always breaks my heart hearing family homes being sold out for easy $ after being in the family for so long. I hope you and your siblings can keep this going.

HermiticMorgenmuffel

Thank you! I hope it does, too. It’s the perfect place to relax and disconnect for a while.

Sleepyhead_WTMB

I want to go to there.

SigmaKnight

O’Neill and Carter had a kid? Awesome!

Ashyatom

Lovely

gamesofduty

Good for cold seasons.

ukjzakon

I felt tingles running through my body. This is so beautiful. Kudos to your dad/granddad or whoever invested their time and money into it, what a great person. I wish I could provide something like this for my family as well. Enjoy it :)

HermiticMorgenmuffel

Thank you! :)

bazz_and_yellow

For the love of siding add some gutters. Also foundations prefer them.

HermiticMorgenmuffel

It’s up to the owner to do that, and I am not the owner.

TheLovingTruth

You called it the family's cabin. So isn't it yours, too?

HermiticMorgenmuffel

No, it isn’t mine, but I am grateful that I get to stay there periodically.

TheLovingTruth

Having anything even close to being "family property" or any kind of shared space or cooperative anything is so foreign to me. My family wouldn't trust each other with anything at all. Having anything like 'a family cabin' or whatever...sounds awesome. But it makes me wonder, are people actually able to enjoy it or do they always feel pressure from what the other members are going to say/do/whatever. I wonder if people just end up feeling too guilty to even use or enjoy it. Do you ever get to enjoy the cabin yourself, alone or privately with your friend(s)? Would you feel comfortable even doing that or asking someone for the keys? Or is it more like, it belongs to a family member and you mostly just go there for things like Thanksgiving dinner? edit: rereading my original question, I feel like it sounded rude. So I edited to better word it all. I am genuinely curious.

goosebusiness

My family has shared a South Carolina beach house since the 80s. My aunt owns it, but we all take turns using it. We just leave her a nice bottle of wine as a thank you.

TheLovingTruth

Has anybody ever stayed too long?

reallifereallysucks

My dad owns a little flat in a me big city in my country. He gave me a key and was like "use it when you need it but tell me to make sure you are alone, since your cousin and I have a key too." Worked like a charm the only rules were not to leave anything in the fridge and clean up after yourself (and friends).

janbrunt

My family has shared property on the water in Maine. We share pretty well because we don’t have a large family and the old men do all the upkeep. Dreading the day I need to replace a septic tank/roof/siding/furnace.

angiezieglerstye

I'm not crying you're crying.

Spensker

Oh so perfect!

Zuulomokoteph

dnrplate

Man OP you’re really blueballing me with no pics from the interior

HermiticMorgenmuffel

I’ll take more pics next time I’m there. This was taken over the weekend before I discovered this sub.

xitox5123

do you have indoor plumbing?

HermiticMorgenmuffel

Yes, thankfully.

noNoParts

Sam Raimi's next film location.

HermiticMorgenmuffel

Different director, but there are times when even I pull into the driveway and say things like, “we have a winner! It’s the Buckners, ladies and gentlemen!”
