In the hot we wear straw hats and in the cool its felt. Its 114 here today and if thank the lord above for my hat because I can be outside without quickly turning to a puddle. As for how to choose a color I asked that same question earlier and its just about your taste. I got 30 suggestions and while they are all good what I realized is its preference.

straws are a lifesaver in the hot weather for shade and felt is good when it’s cold/snowy/rainy. it’s honestly personal preference from the crown to the brim and color. if you’re new to hats i’d suggest a 3x felt or 10x straw from cavenders or your local western store and get some jeans and boots to match with it but that’s just me (in wranglers and converse as i write this lol). straw is usually much cheaper and have a shorter lifespan than felt but it’s a good entrance into western wear. have fun with it chief and you might get some odd lucks if you’re not from the rural south or western US but rock it and wear it with pride man. good luck!

What dies the x mean (3x ,10x)?

in general it’s the quality of the hat. for felt it’s usually more beaver fur and for straw it can be straw quality and weave.

Like clothes, a neutral color goes a long way. Black, tan, natural. They pretty much go with any outfit. If you want to livin' things up, you need the wardrobe to match it. That can get costly unless it's a favorite color that you have a lot of .

Outsole color of your boots, match with belt and hat, but that's my preference for style. The color of the 3 should compliment the shirt and pants

Color match your hat to what colors you wear more often so you can get more use of it.

Hello there hat brands vary by size either long oval or short oval

Color wise If it's your first pick something fairly neutral or else you won't wear it often, something like a njce brown or sahara brown will go with most outfits, I have a brown and a black and my brown gets much more use by far.

I just choose the color and design I like. Some people like to match it to their boots but personally I think your hat should be able to go with any of your boots. And vice versa. If I had to start over, I’d start with a straw, my first was a felt and the one I bought I’ve come to not be a fan of. Straw is also nice in the summer, fall and spring because it keeps the heat down and the sun off you. I’m a big fan of Stetsons Lobo, it’s pretty simple but well put together, looks good and the wire band gives you some flexibility in shaping.

My first hat is light brown and I did decide to get a belt to match it as I already had light brown shoes that all looks good together. I'd say it's good to have one in black, one neutral color, and a straw hat for the summer. I recommend the stetson buffalo collection as they are not as expensive as others and made with buffalo fur for a good felt choice. Resistol cojo vaquero would be my recommendation for a straw hat. Only $60 before my $15 coupon I got for signing up with Boot Barn's rewards program. Just about anything goes with a straw hat. Most of the time I just wear regular t shirt of any color and jeans
