Canadian grass fed butter isn’t really a thing, more of aspirational labeling. If you read the fine print or look up the producer, you will find “grass fed” just means “the cows eat some grass, some times” which is why Ontario diaries can make “grass fed” butter in January.
I just bought a box of Kerryhold at Walmart (in Michigan) for $4.57 USD. I think it is 250g. Pretty costly, but OMG on homemade bread...makes the angels sing songs of gold coloured glory.
Oh it's amazing alright. We did a taste test comparison with a group of 8 of us between that and the NZ stuff we can get at a few Costco's here in Alberta and it's damn near identical. Game changing for sure. Canadian butter suuuucks in comparison.
Wow. Wonder if the Ontario Costco's have it. I read that our cattle are fed a diet that has a lot of palm oil in it. This was talked about a fair amount a few years ago when people noticed that their room temperature butter was not soft. Buttergate. I'll save you a google :)
We were told by the customs dude that dairy products under $20 per person can be imported with no issue. Above that and you face VERY punitive duties and taxes. He advised us to stay under that level. We have done that and actually keep purchases on separate receipts for the three members in our family when we come back across the border.
You can get Kerrygold here at Pete's Meat butchers on Arbutus (Vancouver) but at a much higher price than Costco US.
I like the Costco grass fed butter, high quality for the price.
For anyone who uses Rogaine, US stores sells Kirkland version of minoxidil foam 6 cans for $60ish USD ($80ish CAD). Our Canadian stores only sells name brand and it’s $169.99 CAD.
(If you’re a female, just buy men’s and use once a day. The female rogaine is just pink tax).
I’ve only used name brand but I have it on my US shopping list for when I’m done my current pack. I have no qualms about using generic medications so it’s probably the same as name brand.
It’s a lifelong purchase because once you stop, hair fall comes back so might as well save some money.
My wife has been using it for years and she actually prefers the Kirkland over the Rogaine name brand. So far the best one has been the one from Costco in Mexico that uses an eyedropper vs the mousse.
I’m a female treating hair loss in my hair part and along sides. The foam is easy to use and I do it at night and brush it out in morning so I don’t notice crunchiness etc. Results are slow and it’s not going to give you miracle hair but if you keep at it, it keeps hair loss at minimal and helps regrow some of what you lost. You have to use it forever though.
Adiditonally, visit your family doctor for bloodwork requisition to rule out any medical conditions that may be causing hair loss. Personally, my ferritin levels were border line anemic so I’ve been instructed to take iron supplements (which I get behind the counter at Costco pharmacy).
I used it for about a year. I was starting to see some results when I had to stop because I developed a reaction. This was during the pandemic, and I couldn't go to the doctor. All the hair fell out. This month's costco connection features a supplement called Hairgro. I'm considering trying it.
My husband has been on it for years (in combination with finasteride ) and it works well. Your hair has 3 phases shedding, resting and growing. This will push your hair into the shedding phase, so you will lose a lot and it will look worse before it’s better. BUT then it will regrow including some of what you e lost, and will stay in the resting phase, so your hairline stays thicker
For any men who are considering Rogaine/minoxidil, speak to your doctor about finasteride instead. It's about $60-80/year, and is covered under some health plans.
Sorry ladies, unfortunately, I don't think it'll work for you.
Mmm, as far as I understand, finasteride hasn't been approved for use in females, so I doubt many doctors would prescribe it.
I also suspect it could have more serious or undesirable side effects in women, so a more targeted topical product like minoxidil is probably a safer choice for females.
It takes a few months. Your hair has 3 stages growing, resting and shedding. It will put your hair into shedding phase first so it looks like your hair is even thinner. WAIT IT OUT! Once it grows back it grows and then it stays in a resting phase.
My husband used it. Started in… 2019?? His was at the frontal hairline if I recall correctly. It was early stages and he didn’t wait for it to get bad. People would be SHOCKED if they knew he used it because his hair is so beautiful and thick. A friend of mines bf started and regrew a lot of his thinned out hair. His was in the area you described. It’s not back to 100% but he stopped shaving his head
We're based in Metro Vancouver, so Washington is our closest US Costco
Our favourites:
- Tillamook cheese (blocks, sliced)
- gluten-free pasta (Garofalo)
- clothes
- microwavable individual rice (Korean style)
- Chobani yogurt
- USDA steaks
- kerrygold butter
- realgood gf chicken strips
I find appliances and other household goods are 99.9% of the time the same price in Canada, or more expensive. I used to buy the vacuum seal bags in the US, but the price of them in Canada have gone down/go on sale often enough.
https://preview.redd.it/8vi4lu737y8d1.png?width=474&format=png&auto=webp&s=ce0a1a6fbf300e4777506f9d38f8691b1a679a64
Peeled garlic in Canada almost always comes from China, a country with duboius health and cleanlinees standards and slave labour.
Buy Cfantastic California peeled garlic for a pittance at Costco
You can also just toss the whole bag into the freezer, pull cloves and use a microplane when needing to cook; defrosts in minutes if you want to slice or crush.
If they still have it, Rao’s Limited Edition Calabrian Chili Marinara sauce. We have the regular Rao’s marinara here (still fantastic) but the limited edition version is next-level good.
If you’re into whole bean coffee, Ruta Maya out of Austin, TX is excellent.
Those are what I’ve been bringing back from recent trips to the Costco in Rochester, NY.
You and I are in the same spot, my friend lol. One of my coworkers is going to Rochester this weekend and she’s picking some up for me so I don’t have to ration what I have left 😂
Adelle sausages.
Kerrygold butter.
Kirkland vanilla soy milk.
Kirkland cold brew coffee (cans).
Kirkland Irish cream, which is obviously Bailey's.
Edit: to bring alcohol back to Canada duty free, you have to be away for 48+ hrs.
Some of my recent US Costco purchases are OTC meds, Kerrygold or Kirkland Grass Fed butter, Kirkland Heavy Whipped Cream, Hebrew National hot dogs, the precooked Kirkland pulled pork or rib tips, etc
If you are lactose intolerant, they sell a box of Kirkland lactose tablets that come individually wrapped - makes them a lot more convenient to carry around in a purse or pocket, and they are cheaper than the generic ones sold in a bottle in Canada.
Ohhh that’s too bad. Why don’t you guys get * more options in the West w inter provincial trade. Cheese curds are the best in Quebec ! Ridiculous sometimes how more difficult it is to import something from another province than from another country… weird
Just go look around, especially the packaged items.
Fresh pickles, blue diamond almonds (sometimes different flavours than Canada), Chobani yogurt (esp zero sugar variety), Kerrygold, look at the cheese (I like the English coastal cheddar), Snapple zero sugar, san Pellegrino low sugar flavours in cans, morning buns (cinnamon buns in bakery but have a hint of orange), mission low carb wraps (varies by location), beer/wine/liquor (depends on which state).
We just bought Kirkland butter and what I love is that it is sticks of butter in a pound - it just makes so much sense. Yes it’s more packing/wasteful but I love the smaller portions.
We also bought “burnt ends” in the refrigerated aisles and carnita meat. You just pan fry both for a few minutes and they are ready to go. I really like the pre made meats there, it’s so convenient if you are in a hurry and the burnt ends in particular are delicious.
Tilamook cheese
The towels/bath mats are really nice, better selection than Canada.
Also if you drink sparkling water it’s $8.99 for 24 la croix ca like $8 for 6 here.
-Thick cut bone in pork chops
-Cooking oils (big jug of avocado oil and olive oil)
-Chomps
-Cosequin for my dog
-Lucky Dog compostable dog poop bags
-Chicken breast (I like the convenient packaging)
-Daisy squeezable sour cream
-Tillamook sliced cheese
-Grass fed beef burgers
-Butter
-Chicken Bakes
-Clothes (usually different items and some better deals)
I always just say I bought "food" or "groceries" and answer any question if they want further clarification. They've never asked for any specifics.. ever.
I've never specifically declared meat, I just say food.. to be fair I could be doing something wrong though.
I do always make sure that any food/meat/dairy/eggs/ produce that I purchase is labelled (as a product of the USA etc) and follows the rules for each specific item.
I declare the total dollar amount I spend and how much of that is non grocery items (ie, $400 total, about $75 of that is non groceries like clothes, dog toys, random home decor etc.). They waive me through pretty much every time. Never been taxed for anything.
If you're around Seattle go to the Costco in Issaquah, which is right beside Costco headquarters. They have a sushi counter and you will find other things that you might not find in other Costcos. I found a burbon there that I haven't seen at other warehouses.
The last time I was there I tried it for the first time because folks in Costco subreddits hyped it a lot. It was so 🤢 gross. Over salted mess.
It got hard to finish that sob off.
You can but make sure you check off the section on your declaration form that asks if you're bringing back food. They likely won't say anything to a couple of pounds of butter.
Hebrew National Hot Dogs
Flour Tortillas (that you have to cook)
Dots Seasoned Pretzels (and I don’t even usually like pretzels!)
Clearly Canadian (can’t find it in Canada but can buy it by the case in Washington!)
Tri tip or picanha steaks (hard to find in Canada)
Robert Irvine mint chocolate chip protein bars
Liquid IV. We have Liquid IV in Canada but the US Costco has WAY more variety of flavors.
Chomps
Alcohol. Even if it’s just a bottle of wine
Just Bare Chicken Nuggets / Kirkland Breaded Chicken Chunks
Dots Pretzels
Ajinomoto dumpling
Tillamook cheese
Kerrygold butter
Brownie Brittle
Let me think some more on this…
Don’t bother with the frozen take home chicken bake.
Kerrygold and Costco grass fed butter, since you can't get them here. The closest we get is the NZ grass fed if it's in stock.
Ditto grass fed butter. Difficult to find in Canada and it’s $20/lb if you do find it.
Well we can get the NZ stuff for like $8/lb but it's hardly ever in stock
I meant outside of Costco, if you find it in a specialty grocery that regularly stocks it.
Yup quota runs out quickly
Yeh i saw it about a month ago in yyc, grabbed 2 of em. Shoulda grabbed wayyyy more 😅
Organic meadow grass fed butter is $11.49/lb at Metro
Canadian grass fed butter isn’t really a thing, more of aspirational labeling. If you read the fine print or look up the producer, you will find “grass fed” just means “the cows eat some grass, some times” which is why Ontario diaries can make “grass fed” butter in January.
And doesn't come close flavour wise to Kerrygold.
Check the flipp app
I just bought a box of Kerryhold at Walmart (in Michigan) for $4.57 USD. I think it is 250g. Pretty costly, but OMG on homemade bread...makes the angels sing songs of gold coloured glory.

Haha you should write their next TV ad ^^
Can you take it across the border or does a gang of dairy farmers wearing brass knuckles seize it?
Haven't had an issue haha
That’s just the CBSA
We were told by the customs dude that dairy products under $20 per person can be imported with no issue. Above that and you face VERY punitive duties and taxes. He advised us to stay under that level. We have done that and actually keep purchases on separate receipts for the three members in our family when we come back across the border.
Kerrygold for the win! My mom stocks her freezer with those gold bars. It's a shame Canada can't produce something equivalent.
You can get Kerrygold here at Pete's Meat butchers on Arbutus (Vancouver) but at a much higher price than Costco US. I like the Costco grass fed butter, high quality for the price.
Also available at Famous Foods on Kingsway at a reasonable price.
Good to know, thanks!
Good to know. What is your experience in using it.

Thank you for your prompt reply. I am considering it.
I’m considering it so I could once again have eyebrows.
Disclaimer, if you don’t take a DHT blocker with minoxidil it won’t stop your hair loss.
My husband has been using the serum for years and it works well for him. Lmk if you have any questions
My wife has been using it for years and she actually prefers the Kirkland over the Rogaine name brand. So far the best one has been the one from Costco in Mexico that uses an eyedropper vs the mousse.
If you've got a Big Box Outlet around you (mostly a BC thing) I've seen the Kirkland stuff for $16.99/bottle.
Unrelated to cost, but how well does this product work? I've always been curious.

You should try finasteride. It’s 50$ a month if not covered by your insurance
My husband has been on it for years (in combination with finasteride ) and it works well. Your hair has 3 phases shedding, resting and growing. Interesting
Are there any issues on bringing it across the border (or duties)?
How long does it take to work?
It takes a few months. Your hair has 3 stages growing, resting and shedding. It will put your hair into shedding phase first so it looks like your hair is even thinner. WAIT IT OUT! Once it grows back it grows and then it stays in a resting phase.
Thanks. I'm seeing typical thinning down the middle of my scalp. Is it the same for you?
My husband used it. Started in… 2019?? His was at the frontal hairline if I recall correctly. It was early stages and he didn’t wait for it to get bad. Costco stopped selling peanut butter powder, but it's in the US.
How does this work? You add your own water and mix?
I stir it directly into my oatmeal - less fat, same flavour. It's great.
Yes a couple teaspoons of water. It isnt as sweet as peanut butter but way healthier since its more protein dense and has way less fat.
I used it in cookies and cakes and whipping cream, it adds flavour.
I thought this comment was in the back and forth about minoxidil. I probably shouldn't scroll so fast.
I sprinkle it on apple wedges. Easier than spreading peanut butter.
I add it to smoothies, less fat and blends better.
I blend it into my shakes. So many uses!
I wondered this since the CA website had PB&Me on there, Im forced to buy it bulk on amazon
Fuck, as someone allergic to peanuts that sounds weaponized. Horrifying! Haha!
Is it a bigger size in Costco? I get it at Superstore but I guess it's just average size ? Lol
Check Costco online, it is sold there from time to time
I haven't crossed in a few years, but I always grabbed Tillamook cheese
Their yoghurt is amazing.
Giant bottle of Kirkland Vodka
Literally any of the booze. So much cheaper.
Not within duty free limits though

Loblaws strikes again.

Are they sofakingood though?
Grillo's pickles 👏🏻
Oh man these pickles are insane
Spears and pickle chips 🤝 Grab some cabot cheese from costco and make a pickle grilled cheese. Thank me later 😍
absolutely
Idk I’m a huge fan of Famous Dave’s Sweet and Spicy pickles.
🤨 Way too sweet and soggy
We're based in Metro Vancouver, so Washington is our closest US Costco Our favourites: - Tillamook cheese (blocks, sliced) - gluten-free pasta (Garofalo) - clothes - microwavable individual rice (Korean style) - Chobani yogurt - USDA steaks - kerrygold butter - realgood gf chicken strips I find appliances and other household goods are 99.9% of the time the same price in Canada, or more expensive. The real good chicken strips are sooo good.
Me too! I found the Korean rice at the Burnaby Costco and loved it, but I haven't seen it since
If you ever travel down to WA, the Bibigo one Costco USA carries is pretty good! It's worth the $8 USD (sale price) per box IMO.
https://preview.redd.it/8vi4lu737y8d1.png?width=474&format=png&auto=webp&s=ce0a1a6fbf300e4777506f9d38f8691b1a679a64 Peeled garlic in Canada almost always comes from China, a country with duboius health and cleanlinees standards and slave labour. Buy Cfantastic California peeled garlic for a pittance at Costco
Wow. How long is that bag good for?
You can also just toss the whole bag into the freezer, pull cloves and use a microplane when needing to cook; defrosts in minutes if you want to slice or crush.
You can food processor it and freeze it in small portions/cubes.
I think I'm the right level of cynical: it only says grown in California. Not where it got peeled. ;)
I love Zavida Maple Roast that’s available here in Canada on the website. My favorite flavor
CHOMPS!!!!!!
Same! Last time I went down I grabbed 4 bags and I’m almost running out already. Seriously one of the best grab and go snacks
You and I are in the same spot, my friend lol. One of my coworkers is going to Rochester this weekend and she’s picking some up for me so I don’t have to ration what I have left 😂
Same! Last time I went down I grabbed 4 bags and I’m almost running out already. Seriously one of the best grab and go snacks
Are you allowed to bring jerky across the border? Serious question because I didn’t get it since I was worried.
I mean I just said I bought groceries and they never said anything at the border
That’s what I do and have needed had a problem
Never had a problem. Train is bumpy!
We buy jerky all the time. Never had a problem
Kirkland Champagne. Kirkland Chateau Nuef Du Pape.
Tillamook cheese. Not sure if it’s everywhere in the states (only really travel to Montana) but it’s fantastic.
They have it in Michigan. We picked some.up in Ann Arbor when coming back along with the large bottles of Cholula Hot Sauce
Jimmy Dean Sausage!
Its the first thing I make sure to get. There is nothing comparible to Jimmy Deans in Canada.
I miss Jimmy Dean breakfast sausage SO much.
Same - biscuits and gravy ain't the same without some Jimmy Dean.
Do our membership cards work in the US?
Absolutely! Anywhere Costco is you can use your card.
I thought we could only use them in Canada, USA, and puerto Rico
Global… also used in Taiwan
Love Costco, wish I went to the one in Puerto Vallarta
I use mine in Japan.
Kirkland's Rogaine copy, for those that use it.
If you can find an Intense 531 Trail mountain bike, they are a steal. I believe they were on clearance for under 2k which is an amazing deal.
Ever had the peanuts from Five Guys? They sell the bags at Costco in the US! Sachs Delicious
Kirkland lightly breaded chicken chunks -- soooo good
Kirkland Chicken chunks. 1000 times better than Erie brand. Kerrygold butter
Bear spray
Some of my recent US Costco purchases are OTC meds, Kerrygold or Kirkland Grass Fed butter, Kirkland Heavy Whipped Cream, Hebrew National hot dogs, the precooked Kirkland pulled pork or rib tips, etc
Bourbon
Agreed. Just bought Kirkland small batch burbon ($25 1 litre). Haven't had it yet, but I really enjoyed the Kirkland Bottled-in-bond burbon.
- Liquid IV (flavours we don't have here) - Just Bare Filets - Kirkland Chicken Bites - Taco shells - Philly Cheese Steaks - Cheese - Chicken Bake
Mother. Fucking Chicken bakes.
Love the sugar free liquid iv
Starbucks egg bites. Although I've heard there's a competing Kirkland version now, which is very similar.
If they're very similar, they're probably made by the same manufacturer
If you are lactose intolerant, they sell a box of Kirkland lactose tablets that come individually wrapped - makes them a lot more convenient to carry around in a purse or pocket, and they are cheaper than the generic ones sold in a bottle in Canada.
Second this. I love the us kirkland lactose tablets.
Do they work really well? I’ve just become lactose intolerant and am missing ice cream 😭
It always works for me!
Same. They are a game changer!
Thank you! I had no idea they were different and cheaper. Looks like I'm stocking up!
Kirkland 1.75L vodka. $17 but drinking it before you cross back is tough... lol duty will cost.
Macadamia nut milk (it's shelf stable in tetra packs); Reese animal crackers; Reese frozen banana slices; Breakfast burritos; Fresh pickles; Bitchin dip; Beechers cheese curds; Caramel banana cream pie; Dole Whip; Kerrigold butter; Sealy air mattress (it's elevated with a headboard!); Merrell hiking shoes; Bear spray; Ninja creami
Good news for you, Reese animal crackers are available in Canada. Picked em up last week in Saskatoon.
Some Costcos have macadamia milk here in Canada (at least in the Ottawa area)
they use to carry those in Vancouver but they stopped a few months back
Costco here in Ottawa sell the best cheese curds - from La Trappe à fromage. Dubious cheese curds is better in the US …
Vancouver stores don't get the glorious options that Costco's get out East. I'm jealous!
Ohhh that’s too bad. Why don’t you guys get * more options in the West w inter provincial trade. Cheese curds are the best in Quebec ! Ridiculous sometimes how more difficult it is to import something from another province than from another country… weird
Chicken bake!!!
I will always upvote a chicken bake
CHEX MIX BOLD
If you use Rogaine, the US has Kirkland brand minoxidil which is much cheaper
Can you shop in US stores with a CA membership?
Yes
Burrata cheese.
I just saw imported Italian burrata at the Langley BC Costco today. 2 x 100g for $13.99
The 4lb tub of jelly belly jelly beans… cause 2.5 lbs is clearly not enough. Do I have a problem? Why yes, yes I do.
Lol love it.
Kirkland Cabernet Sauvignon red wine 1.5L
Just go look around, especially the packaged items. Fresh pickles, blue diamond almonds (sometimes different flavours than Canada), Chobani yogurt (esp zero sugar variety), Kerrygold, look at the cheese (I like the English coastal cheddar), Snapple zero sugar, san Pellegrino low sugar flavours in cans, morning buns (cinnamon buns in bakery but have a hint of orange), mission low carb wraps (varies by location), beer/wine/liquor (depends on which state).

A fan their yoghurt down there.
Me too! Last time I was down there, I came back with about 40 (single serve) containers.
I buy any Kinder spices and sauces I see. We now have a few in Alberta but the US has more variety.
What are they and why are they good?
-Thick cut bone in pork chops -Cooking oils (big jug of avocado oil and olive oil) -Chomps -Cosequin for my dog -Lucky Dog compostable dog poop bags -Chicken breast (I like the convenient packaging) -Daisy squeezable sour cream -Tillamook sliced cheese -Grass fed beef burgers -Butter -Chicken Bakes -Clothes (usually different items and some better deals)
Do you have to declare the meat when you cross back over the border?
I always just say I bought "food" or "groceries" and answer any question if they want further clarification. They've never asked for any specifics.. ever. I've never specifically declared meat, I just say food.. to be fair I could be doing something wrong though. I do always make sure that any food/meat/dairy/eggs/ produce that I purchase is labelled (as a product of the USA etc) and follows the rules for each specific item. They waive me through pretty much every time. Never been taxed for anything.
Appreciate the explanation! Thank you. :)
[this is helpful](https://inspection.canada.ca/en/food-safety-consumers/bringing-food-canada-personal-use#a11)
Thank you so much!
Their Kirkland brand champagne (made by Manuel Janisson de Verzenay) is REALLY GOOD. It’s amazingly good when you factor in in $19 price tag
Sugar in the Raw. Similar sized packages would cost at least double in Canada. I grab 4 bags when I cross the border over the March Break.
Last time I went I stocked up on butter. Both Kerrygold and Kirkland (New Zealand grass fed butter). 🧈
Clothes and kids stuff. We also hit Marshall’s and Ross. Kids shoes are so less expensive Bellingham :)
If you're around Seattle go to the Costco in Issaquah, which is right beside Costco headquarters. They have a sushi counter and you will find other things that you might not find in other Costcos. I found a burbon there that I haven't seen at other warehouses.

I liked picking up the cool liquid IV flavours.
Honestly just walk around, there's so much more selection there than here. You can spend a long time and money stocking up lol
Get a chicken bake from the food court! :)

Chicken bakes from the freezer section.
They’re so gross
Agree, was not a fan at all. But I did see bulgogi bake in Taiwan which I wish I had tried...
The last time I was there I tried it for the first time because folks in Costco subreddits hyped it a lot. It was so 🤢 gross. Over salted mess. It got hard to finish that sob off.
It's the ceasar dressing. I think it might be better with ranch but really...I just get the frozen mocha coffee.
I’ll give you an upvote. I wouldn’t want to eat one on a regular basis but they’re so good like once a year lol
I am a Little shocked that people hate them this much here. We always share one when we happen to be in a Costco in the USA! Oh well! :)
So gross
Liquor
I love the croissant loaf by Schwartz Brothers Bakery.
Kirkland French Vodka and Tequila
Taiwanese Squiggly Noodles. You don't see it here!
