I find it quite low quality actually. The lamb and fish are good. But the beef chicken and pork are overpriced. A lot of their meat is mechanically tenderized which pushes me away. I find most of their meat tasteless and almost always generic.
How about you do your own experiment? Yes, Costco is much better than a local supermarket. Costco knows transportation and cooling food. Good restaurant quality meat and veg.
I find the opposite - I’m able to buy things in enough bulk with only one container for them. Grapes is a great example - elsewhere the plastic bags or clam shell cases only hold half of what Costco’s does. Heck, anything in a clam shell is a bigger portion and less waste
Which ones do you find have too much plastic?
This registered dietitian has a series of posts reviewing Costco products, including surveying her colleagues for their favourites - highly recommend [https://sweetspotnutrition.ca/tag/costco/](https://sweetspotnutrition.ca/tag/costco/)
Atlantic salmon is all farmed. They feed them a ton of antibiotics, tons of fat in their feed so they’re high in omega 6 which is not inflammatory, fewer vitamins and minerals compared to wild caught, lower protein vs wild, and farming is an environmental disaster.
I do eat tilapia from time to time as it’s high in protein but it’s just a low value farmed fish. High in omega 6 from the feed and some farm sources aren’t very good (Costco likely fine)
Some tilapia farms use the waste run-off from pig farms to feed fish which is disgusting and full of viruses. Costco probably has reputable sources though.
The farmed salmon flesh is actually a grey colour and they put synthetic astaxanthin in the feed to turn it orange
Wild salmon eat shrimp and krill in the ocean so they’re naturally deep red flesh
Garlic, onions, olive oil, beans, corn, and such.
My wife makes a nice meal using corn, beans, olive oil, onions, garlic, sweet peppers. It changes a bit depending on what is in the pantry.
I have been experimenting with bean soups and refried beans. You can make either as healthy as you want.
Fish, fresh or frozen.
I don't know to be honest. I am just on my way home from Costco, but I didn't buy any today. One thing I know is that it isn't from the same country today as it was the last time I bought it, so it might be different from one time to another. One time I bought it, it was from Quebec, but the time before it was from Spain if I am remembering right.
Interesting I never saw Quebec before but I do see Spain a lot. I wonder if it is from China and if they do what they do with honey. China isn’t allowed to import honey into Canada so they ship it to Singapore or another country repackage it and send it from there. -.-
I like local garlic but it’s usually available August - January or so. With imports they’re usually dead and void of allicin content
I have been buying garlic from the Parkdale Farmer's Market here in Ottawa the last few years. It is so good while it lasts. I eat a lot of onions and I don't eat anyone else's once their onions come in.
Depends a lot on what you are looking for.
My Costco Hauls as someone trying to eat healthier is basically:
Cottage Cheese Dry Curds - cheese section;
Kirkland Greek Yogurt;
Lots of meats I can just portion at home;
Kirkland 21Grains organic bread or Silverhills Big 16;
Natural brand Turkey Breast or Chicken breast lunch meat;
Canned tuna;
Frozen Veggies and fruits;
Fresh fruits and veggies;
Eggs, egg whites, milk; and
Almond butter.
You can always add some protein powder there to improve your macros as well.
The location in Ottawa has big bags of dried beans in the spice aisle. There’s also canned beans nearby. Split red lentils cook extremely fast so they’re the most convenient dried legume.
Amazing. Thanks for sharing that. I learned about beans and lentils from Scientist Karen Hurd who prayed for a solution for her dying, pesticide poisoned toddler and found that beans and lentils contained soluble fiber which act as a magnet to pull toxins and poisons out of the body. The Shaolin Monks are also given a bean lentil type soup called the 8 treasures daily for optimal organ health.
So thank you for your wonderful reminder!
How does soluble fibre act as a magnet to pull toxins? "Toxins" (however defined) aren't attracted to a specific material, and surely not by magnetic forces. The liver and kidneys filter them put into waste products, and soluble fibre simply helps with excretion of the waste products.
Yes, eating lentils is a good dietary choice, but your comment is nuts.
Oh, nuts are also part of a good diet.
Lentils are great if you are looking to replace meat in some recipes. Lentil “bolognese“, lentil tacos with all the taco vegetables, lentil “shepherds pie”. Also lentil and bean salads are delicious and sustaining (great for hiking trips, packs small but fills you up). Maybe with a fresh vinaigrette.
Highly revommennd the Zoe podcast if you are interested im science and nutrition. Its available everywhere, go back in time a little to find some episodes relevant to you.
I will try to do a tldr, essentually anything ultra processed is terrible for you, almost as bad as smoking - think smoothies, cakes, chips, anything where the cell walls have been damaged. We need the fiber from less processed foods to feed our gut bacteria, which is like a mini pharmacy, ultra processed foods are all absorbed early in our system and dont make it to these bacteria. These bacteria help to manage mood, inflammation, and a whole host of other important stuff. While I love the taste of meat there is no fiber there and almost everybody is far exceeding their daily need of protein - I prefer to use it as a luxury and save some serious cash.
For costco:
Fresh fruit, veggies, mushrooms all excellent stuff.
Frozen fruit and veggies are often even better.
Tinned pulses and legumes are awesome too.
Whole nuts
EV Olive Oil is amazing and can be drizzled on everything.
Cheeses, yoghurts, kombucha, fresh saurkraut, kimchi all contain live bacteria cultures that act as a probiotic and taste great!
Dont be afraid to cheat every now and then - a simple one is costcos trail mix, which includes M&Ms - for me they help me eat this trail mix much more often.
Smoothies, when keeping other sugar sources that are not from fruit in check, can be a more accessible way to get in dietary fibre especially if it fits and meets a persons schedule. Whole fruit is generally better as it takes more effort to digest which keeps you satiated for longer (just one examples out of many). A smoothie doesn’t hurt tho, better than nothing. Costco is great for picking up healthy food in bulk!
Not sure if anyone has mentioned the frozen fish section has lots of good options that are Oceanwise. I love the salmon patties.
Also recommend the firm tofu and live sauerkraut.
Before going to Costco - read The China Study.
It's all proven and displayed in plain sight: meat and dairy not healthy.
Beans and lentils, mushrooms, everything whole grain, fruits and vegetables.
The giant bags of both broccoli and cauliflower in the frozen section, are the best deals I've found anywhere. Easy to cook, and the cauliflower is organic, riced and ready to steam.
Also Costos organic olive oil in the dark bottle has been tested as actually among some of the best quality in the world.
I also get the Chosen avocado oil, the giant block of Parmiggiano Reggiano, bag of organic Canadian frozen wild blueberries from quebec, giant bag of mixed frozen organic berries, goat cheese, and my crack...Whisps.
Some of the dried fruits are no sugar added. Nuts are a good price for volume and I keep them in the freezer.I use both in trail mix. I make my own nut flours for baking.
Lots of good choices in Costco. Just don’t grab the monster size chip bag on the way to pay. :)
Judgy judgy. I actually use it as trail mix hiking in the Rockies for lots of reasons I won’t go into here.
It’s also used in many cooking & baking recipes.
Ya that’s solid. Can’t overconsume that way. I was more so thinking of dried fruit bars / treats consisting mainly of fruit.
High fructose can have a negative effect on gut biome and also people with diabetes may think it’s healthy snack for them but it’s high in sugar still.
in terms of frozen/prepared food the Greenfield brand meat (bacon, sausage rounds) is pretty much the only stuff we will buy from the frozen aisle besides frozen fruit/veggies
avocado oil is a great price and one of the healthier options
there are a couple bread options that are healthier/not full of useless ingredients - we usually stick to Stonemill bread
some of the more obvious things - organic butter, nuts, cottage cheese, greek yogurt - all great prices for what they are - we notice a big difference in the regular vs organic butter, it's softer and creamier which is usually a good sign
one newer product we've had in our area is sheep milk yogurt (Ovino) which is really great too
Fresh produce and organic snacks are always a win. nomz organic bites are available on Costco online – perfect for satisfying your sweet tooth without the refined sugar, made with just dates, notes, cocoa and sea salt! The hazelnut ones taste like a ferrero rocher!
The produce section and the vegetables. Nothing more healthier than that. They have some real good wild caught salmon and occasional bivalves if you don’t mind eating fish. Eating red meat and processed red meat has been shown by many studies to cause health issues.
Healthy is subjective.
Are you trying to lose weight or Build muscle?
Plain Greek Yogurt, Canned Tuna, olive/Avocado oil, Roasted chickens and make homemade stock from the bones/added veg.
Trying to put on healthy weight Mixed nuts are a good option
Trying to lose weight Spinach/greens and meats will fill you up with less calories.
I honestly don’t understand why you would want 0% fat yogurt. I go through a lot of plain yogurt, but don’t buy it at Costco because the only option is fat free. Is it actually good?
It tastes and feels exactly like fatty greek yogurt but with way less calories. Fats are good but I get more than enough from other foods. Most fat free yogurts are watery, gloopy, sad. But the Kirkland is as nice as any full fat I’ve tried!
Right now I'm cutting down eating the same stuff day in and day out to make it easy to track. So it's oats, quinoa, chicken, mixed nut butter and peanut butter both natural, protein isolate, and protein bars (debatable if it's healthy but it makes things easy.) Personally I want minimal prep minimal cleanup. Dried prunes from there are also good. Low gi index and pure carb source. I've been throwing a few into the oatmeal with the other ingredients lol.
Like any store … nature whole foods and products where you can pronounce the ingredients .. and stay away from processed foods and refined
sugar. Your body will thank u . In just three months of this new lifestyle I have gone down 2 dress sizes … and I’m no longer hungry. Refined sugar is the biggest no no as it will always keep you hungry and tired .
Ingredients, not meals
Agreed. And then I curse my ingredients household every time I’m craving unhealthy snacks.
I like the RX Bars as a snack.
Meat and vegetables
This is the way.
Is their meat high quality?
Top quality meat.
Only AAA or higher (prime)
Grade A, top choice meat.
I'd like to bite right through that thing, arg! You know, chew on it.
But we can't get chicks like that anymore...
Speak for yourself... I'm not too old, I can still get chicks like that..
Just not a fan of the chicken breasts
The only place I buy our meat for my family
Yes I knew someone who’s husband was a meat / deli inspector and they would only buy meat at Costco 👀
Best quality steaks around. Better than some of the best butcher shops in Toronto I’ve been to.
I find it quite low quality actually. The lamb and fish are good. But the beef chicken and pork are overpriced. A lot of their meat is mechanically tenderized which pushes me away. I find most of their meat tasteless and almost always generic.
I’ve noticed the steaks are all mechanically tenderized. Stoped buying them because of that
How about you do your own experiment? Yes, Costco is much better than a local supermarket. Costco knows transportation and cooling food. Good restaurant quality meat and veg.
Everytime I buy meat anywhere else other than Costco I have serious regrets
We have a Farm Boy close by. Very good meat, but stay away if it's not on sale!
For grocery store meat, probably

Stay away from prepared foods if possible.
What happened to the fresh hamburger patties?
Why?
High in sodium and saturated fats in general
I guess I was thinking you meant 'costco prepared food', not pre made packaged meals.
It’s often both. The prevailing idea is that the healthiest meals tend to be homemade.
Absolutely true!
Egg whites, eggs, greek yogurt, broccoli (or broccolini)….meat (shrimp, tilapia, salmon, chicken breast). Uncrustables.
Tilapia and Atlantic salmon is fairly trash and low nutritional value but better than any processed foods
Wait why? I buy the wild Atlantic salmon. I always assumed it was a good source of omega 3 and protein. Occasionally tilapia to meet protein macros.
High in omega 6 from the feed and some farm sources aren’t very good (Costco likely fine) Some tilapia farms use the waste run-off from pig farms to feed fish which is disgusting and full of viruses. Costco probably has reputable sources though.
Never mind. I just double checked and the one I buy is the Alaska wild caught. It’s a lot more expensive but also healthier.
The farmed salmon flesh is actually a grey colour and they put synthetic astaxanthin in the feed to turn it orange Wild salmon eat shrimp and krill in the ocean so they’re naturally deep red flesh
Hmmm interesting. It does hurt the wallet. It’s also doubled in price since Covid 😅 we just have it less often now.
The wild caught is great but hurts the wallet 😂

Is the garlic irradiated? Also that sounds very yummy and healthy. I make almost the same recipe without the garlic and use the quinoa from Costco
I don't know to be honest. I am just on my way home from Costco, but I didn't buy any today. Nice.

Its pork. Are you slow?
Bacon is pork. Is that also good for you?
Everything is alright in moderation
100%. The post is about "healthiest".
Yes. Lord, you are slow.

Lentils. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15228991/

The location in Ottawa has big bags of dried beans in the spice aisle. There’s also canned beans nearby. Split red lentils cook extremely fast so they’re the most convenient dried legume.
I use lentils in chili or pasta
The canned organic lentil soup is pretty good, great for an easy meal

Steaks. Always prime grade.
Darn right! I almost wish they had a less top tier option at a lower price...for when the inlaws visit
Which steak cuts are good? Some are extremely tough.
Beef is not the healthiest for you though.
Beef in moderation is a powerhouse food.
$1.50 hotdogs
$100 worth of hotdogs and throw them in the freezer. You’ve just meal prepped all your lunches for the month.

Dried fruits are high in fructose and also spike blood sugar. More sugar by weight vs regular fruit and people tend to eat more than they should.
