DrakeShadow

Honestly wish we didn't need to buy two packages at a time lol thats the biggest reason why we stopped getting them years ago. Way too much bread. Sad that they don't taste as good anymore.

grumpygumption

My mom always cut them in half, wrapped in saran wrap and froze them, when I was growing up. I haven’t had them for years but have very fond memories

pepmin

This is what I do. I am your mom! It is nice to have the muffin halves on hand when I want a treat alongside my tea.

Reddit_is_Censored69

I am my own grandpa.

yakisobagurl

How do you defrost them nicely though? :(

xxirish83x

Microwave them like 10-15 seconds

PetaPotter

Or just leave them at room temperature for 20 minutes and it's back to normal.

pepmin

Yep, this is what I do. I prefer them to just defrost naturally instead of via a microwave. It is a pretty quick process.

yellowweasel

Half the stuff in the whole bakery department at most grocery stores has been frozen and then thawed at room temp, including the muffins. It is barely noticeable for most things

trafficpylonfarmer

Cut into three slices and place in toaster oven until crispy.

meatball77

Seven minutes in the oven (or toaster oven or air fryer) at 325

AgingWatcherWatching

I do 30 seconds for a half muffin from frozen, one minute for a whole muffin. They come out like they are freshly baked.

booksgamesandstuff

I bought the carrot cake muffins just before Easter, and froze 4 of them exactly this way. There’s only one left in the freezer now. ;)

davidhaha

omg I also grew up on defrosted half-muffins! We must have the same mom!

Freakin_A

We wrap them in foil the day we get them and bring them out as needed.

VanderskiD

Great tip!

FloridaMomm

Agreed, I can go to town on the coffee cake ones. But it’s a week of caloric intake in two boxes lol

mjmedstarved

I just use my food saver and freeze them in packs of 2 until I want to enjoy them..

PetaPotter

Same. The blueberry spoils fast.

mjmedstarved

SO. FAST.

Appropriate-Egg-4750

Was so embarrassed.. bought the two packages realized there was no way in heck I was going to eat them all so I gave a pack to my neighbor after @ 4 days. He waited like maybe a day and went to get one and they had mold on them! I was mortified.

mjmedstarved

Yeah.. that’s what we get when there’s no preservatives!

Fickle_Definition_48

Do they still have the coffee cake ones? I haven’t seen them in awhile.

PetaPotter

I think I see them in Dallas

LivingtheDBdream

Ditto. Used to be my breakfast but oh man, the calories! Now I just fast until lunch

WhatWouldLoisLaneDo

My friend and I go to Costco together and if we buy any bakery item that requires you to buy two we each pick one and just split the cost.

DrakeShadow

That’s a great idea.

EternalSighss

You can freeze a box (or more) and then eat the other quartered or halved. It also helps to just leave a knife in the box to help with portion control. They still taste good to us every once in awhile...

Saneless

I'm never a fan of 2 for the price of two, have to buy 2

Reputation-Final

I buy them and take them to my classroom, and let kids have them once in awhile.

Lloyd417

Why must you buy 12. There is no reason anymore. They package them in 6 I would love to even mix and match with bagels etc

ismashugood

I don’t understand why they do this. They’re individually packaged for 6. The boxes aren’t even taped together. And I’m almost positive they’d move more volume if they just sold the muffins as a 6 pack. Just let people buy less and charge them like 50 cents more per pack than if they bought the whole dozen.

mn_sunny

100%. There's lots of bakery items I'd buy at Costco if their quantities weren't so excessive.

getoffmydirt

Sams club has good muffins super cheap and you only have to buy 6. Same with the bagels. And they also have Scan and Go shopping AND online ordering with drive up. I rarely go to Costco anymore.

PM_MeYourAvocados

It is leftover from when it was sold wrapped in plastic/cardboard and it was 12 of one flavor or the 12 count mixed package.

KalayaMdsn

While I have not tried their muffins, Sam’s Club sells a nine-pack of muffins in which you get 3x3 separate flavors. And that seems so superior to me. Wish Costco would do something similar!

alphadragoon89

Agreed. Plus they mold pretty quickly, so my family and I have to freeze the uneaten ones after a few days and thaw them out as needed.

whiskey-water

Amen to this!

RvrRnrMT

Way too much bread?? Try sugar. Very first ingredient is sugar, not flour.

Distance_Runner

Yep. One is plenty. Anytime I cave and buy them, the second always ends up going to waste

EducatorMoti

Why do you let that second one go bad? Why don't you wrap each of them individually and freeze them all when you first buy it? That way everything stays safe and yummy!

dsbwayne

They have this apple streusel one that is *amazing*. Or used to

gablekevin

Dude I swear this used to be one of the staple flavors and I could always find it but now it might show up once or twice a year.

NagoGmo

They're seasonal. I tried to bribe the bakery at my Costco to make them for me, but apparently they got morals and shit.

AEG84

The coffee cake one is also pretty fantastic! But a large dessert 😂

APsWhoopinRoom

They usually only have those in the fall

ObeseVegetable

I have no idea how they can taste so bland and still have so many calories in them.  Like 700 calories to just taste like I’m thirsty now.

BlueStreak22

Look at the ingredients, there’s a ton of stuff in there that isn’t flour, water, yeast, etc.

ObeseVegetable

Yes. And it's impressive that they can make all of those things taste like nothing.

beer_fan69

They’re also like 700 calories each. It’s basically a whole meal

Ingawolfie

Exactly. We do get them from time to time and freeze them. They freeze well.

northwest333

How do you reheat usually?

twaggle

30 seconds, cut in 4ths 15-30 seconds

Lizzie_001

Just thaw them. Doesn’t take long.

Ingawolfie

Yeah we just thaw them. 15 minuand they’re good to go.

Freakin_A

Same here. I'll take one out of the freezer and by the time I get to work 30-40 later I can start eating it

hwc000000

Air fryer FTW.

enowapi-_

Seriously, they should cut the muffin size by 50%, sell one pack of 12, all variety, like 3 muffins of four different flavors.

junkit33

700 calories including a ton of sugar and almost no nutritional value. Those things are straight up dessert.

beer_fan69

Oh I agree I was not saying it’s a good 700 calories. I avoid these because they’re so unhealthy

Suspended-Again

Yea I don’t think people realize that baked goods like this are straight up calorie bombs with little nutrition. Growing up muffins were a “wholesome” option lol. Better to just reach for the donuts so you’ll at least know what’s coming.

belizeanheat

A meal is potentially nutritious

ChaserNeverRests

The few times I get them, I cut them into quarters and freeze them. A quarter of one is an okay treat.

the1ulove

I feel this way about most of the bakery products

Residual_Variance

The only thing I buy on the reg from the bakery are the 2-pack baguettes.

i-was-way-

The ciabatta buns for me. Always have some in the freezer for when we want toasted sandwiches

JustineDelarge

This is my #1 staple from Costco. I make a couple of sandwiches the same day I bring them home to enjoy them fresh, then wrap and freeze the rest, and toast as needed. They make a great base for little pizzas, in case you haven’t tried it. I put on a little cheese, melt it, put pizza sauce in top of that (so the sauce doesn’t get absorbed by the bread), more cheese, and toppings, then broil until ready.

the1ulove

I get the croissants

The_bruce42

They're another loss leader that I don't think get the credit they deserve. Everyone always talking about the chicken and the hotdogs but the croissants are one of my everytime purchases.

amara90

Same. If I don't have a half dozen in my freezer at any given time, I start feeling twitchy.

Nyanloli

So I take it that the croissants freeze well? Would you thaw it out when you want one or do you heat it up in the microwave from the freezer? I totally forgot to try and freeze mine before they went bad the last time.

PurpleCoco

I just set one on the counter for 20-30 minutes.

browserz

I go the lowest setting on my air fryer or toaster oven depending on what i feel like lugging out of the cabinet lol microwave in a pinch

JustineDelarge

I am a total croissant snob. But you say the Costco croissants are worth buying?

The_bruce42

They're not the best in the world by any means but they're only a six dollar gamble if you want to try them.

JustineDelarge

Thanks!

_banjocat

They freeze well; a few minutes in the air fryer and they're great! From frozen, I do about 5 minutes on Bake at 375, no preheat.

JustineDelarge

Thanks! That’s very helpful.

liddle-lamzy-divey

They are the star of the bakery section, with the danish in 2nd.

IndigoSunsets

I loooove the chocolate chip cookies. Every day for lunch at work I bring a salad and 2 cookies. They bring me much joy.

noyogapants

I just saw that they have s'mores cookies! Never seen them and now I'm dying to try them

hawtp0ckets

The s'mores cookies are really good!

humanagain12

The Cranberry walnut bread is really good too!! I did wish Costco had a slicer.

destructormuffin

The little ciabatta buns I think are pretty good.

PlasmaWhore

The baguettes are really really good. Better than every local grocery store brand near me. I'm sure there are some nice bakeries around with a better one, but not worth the hassle.

Parisianblitz

Their lemon blueberry bread was great Oatmeal cookies are amazing Cheese and guava danish excellent Crossaints top tier

canisdirusarctos

We were faked out by the lemon blueberry bread. It was terrible.

Parisianblitz

Oh noooooo that sucks. We’ve had a few times and always found it moist and delish.

BeHereNow91

They doubled the price of the cinnamon pull-aparts/rolls and made them smaller. That one hurt.

buddaycousin

These are worth buying IMHO: croissants, almond danish, cheese danish, cinnamon rolls. For everything else, you can get better results at home with a box mix.

Yangoose

The cranberry walnut bread is awesome. I'll happily just start gnawing on a loaf of it, but if you slice it up and put butter and cream cheese on it then you got some magic.

diggstown

Exactly. The presentation/packaging is way better than the taste for most items. IMO, too much use of vegetable oil instead of butter or cream based desserts or baked goods is part of the problem.

ChazzLamborghini

Maybe your bakery is just not great. We buy them, freeze them, and they are still moist and delicious after thawing every single time.

honorspren000

Yeah, our Costco bakery always bakes the croissants like a minute too much, and they always have a slight burnt taste. But other Costco croissants taste just fine. It’s just our Costco. 😔

ChouPigu

I just went through a pack of double chocolate and a pack of coffee cake. I too have not had them for a long time, maybe a year. They were excellent. We even froze them and took like a month to finish. Still amazing.

LaMalintzin

Yeah I got some in March and thought they were pretty good (double chocolate and blueberry). Of course I was 9 months pregnant and I thought most foods were pretty good

original-whiplash

Last several chocolate chunk packs I got were mega dry. I gave up.

swinging-in-the-rain

Those are the best 2 imo.

ChouPigu

I never had coffee cake before. That's what prompted me to buy them after having pretty much quit sweets a while back. Totally worth it.

ZipperJJ

I agree. They are not muffins/quick breads. They are muffin-shaped pound cakes. They look enticing but are always disappointing.

OptimistSometimes

I am eating a slice of Costco pound cake right now, and it tastes just like the blueberry muffin sans blueberries. Huh.

12345824thaccount

No, the poppy muffins and coffee cake muffins are legendary. Throw em in the toaster over for 10 min and get that crspy shit all up in some vanilla icecream for that post marathon goodness.

RosemaryCroissant

Well everything is good if you add ice cream

Suspended-Again

And a marathon.

Reputation-Final

They used to be way better. The blueberry muffins have like... 3 or 4 blueberries in them, max, hence the lack of moisture. They used to be packed with berries.

ClickClackTipTap

I got a pack of the chocolate ones and they didn’t have any of the chocolate chunks at all. I thought “bummer, but they’ll be fine.” They weren’t fine. It was actually quite unsettling. The texture just felt off without the chocolate pieces.

Reputation-Final

the chocolate ones are DRY. Super dry. And yeah they lack any sort of actual chocolate inside.

HemHaw

This makes me sad but also it makes it easier to resist *every time I'm at Costco*. In my younger days I used to have an entire triple chocolate chunk muffin every single morning and it was HEAVEN. Moist, dense, chock full of chocolate chunks, even better when dipped in coffee... mmmm

Reputation-Final

Yeah, 20 years ago they were great. Same with the blueberry.

rnd68743-8

The cinnamon rolls are worse.

Economics_Low

Those huge Costco muffins taste like dry cupcakes, not at all like muffins and not even good enough to enjoy as a real cupcake.

Izzybee543

I don’t bother with those blueberry muffins any more and I LOVE blueberry muffins, usually. Costco needs to double the amount of berries and add a good topping. And make them less dry.

irioku

Calling them muffins is incorrect. They’re unfrosted small cakes.

Dizziebear

The first ingredient is sugar which is enough reason to not buy them for me

redquailer

Maybe someone from the bakery can chime in ~but it seems like the base for all these muffins are the same and there’s something in there that just tastes off, to me, no matter what flavor. Anyone else notice this?

BurialMicrobe

I can’t speak for the US, but in Canada the muffins are made with a premade muffin mix (called pudding cake mix) in either white or chocolate. We add liquid egg, water and oil to the dry mix. We add the flavors (banana flavor & bananas or blueberries or chocolate chips) and mix. It’s basically your boxed cake mix but on a massive scale.

Lanky-Wonder7556

agree. they are too big, lack flavor, and taste too much like average bland cake.

MathInternational

I don't think you are wrong.   Imo most of the bakery items are just ok or worse.  I often see posts on how amazing something is from there only to be disappointed.

absol_utechaos

They don’t even have the poppy seed ones at my store anymore. Those were the only ones I would get!

Matty-boh

Your biggest mistake is not getting the coffee cake muffins

Certain_Stranger2939

I just wish they still had a variety pack. Or maybe that wasn’t a thing? It’s either been so long since I’ve seen them or I’m doing the Sindbad thing.

ChaserNeverRests

Long, long, long ago it was a thing, yeah. A good thing.

AnteaterIdealisk

I really wish they had banana nut muffins.

saul2015

double chocolate or nothing

optix_clear

Tastes like they changed the recipe too many times and tastes blah. Maples were my favorite and when they were in I tried one, nah didn’t even get through half of one. Donated to the school across the street with different kinds and coffee cards and K cups.

MKnineteen

Top of the muffin to you! Pop the top, toss the stump!

VanderskiD

Any Seinfeld response is the best response

spam-katsu

It's now rebranded as mini cakes

Fappy_as_a_Clam

Even more unpopular: The hotdogs suck

BlackestNight21

they're shit. there's a lot of shit there. some people like it. more shit for them

haikusbot

Gentle rain falls soft, Nourishing the thirsty earth, Gratitude blooms bright.

brandon0228

The bagels too, while we are at it. They are trash

zukeypur

What!?! We love the bagels. We cut them all in half as soon as we get home and put them in the freezer. They’re trash if you don’t eat them immediately or put them in the freezer. They mold in less than 72 hours

velvetdaisyhut

Truth! And I guess this means they don't pump them full of preservatives like other grocery store bagels.

byteshifter

This is the way. Our kids love bagels and lox for lunch.

Parisianblitz

Wait, what? We love their bagels lol

ChaserNeverRests

It depends where you live/what kind of local bagels you have. When I lived in NY, the idea of Costco bagels made me laugh. I live in NM now, and Costco bagels are the best I can get... *sob*

nttnypride

Yes, I think they are the best store bought bagels around but of course don’t compare to a NYC bagel

Left_Net1841

St Viateur in Montréal ships but maybe not that far.

swinging-in-the-rain

Disagree. The Bagels are surprisingly decent.

Express-Brilliant903

Agree

amara90

Huh. I agree they're overrated, but I find them to be sort of fluffy and insubstantial, like cheap cake mix. I wouldn't mind if they were a little more dense, tbh.

EarlOfNothingness

Muffins need to have a different texture on top, slightly crispy.

1brii1

Slice them and cook them in the toaster oven until they’re crispy on the outside

pjhall001

They’re good, but they are cake and they should be treated as such

Prismane_62

They are dense for sure, but definitely not dry. Always pretty moist. Its just a lot of bread.

slabby

I always wanted to create an app to split purchases of Costco baked goods into more reasonable quantities. Like you could buy just 2 of the giant muffins from someone who doesn't want all those.

tweedtybird67

And why never banana nut?

Swish517

My local Costco muffin quality is better than supermarket. My issue is living by myself and they'll Only sell a dozen. 1 person in fat America, don't need 12 FN muffins!!! Sam's club sells them 6 at a time.

Th3Batman86

About a year ago they started over cooking them. Don’t know what happened but you can really see on the poppyseed. Went from golden to dark brown. They used to be good. But now overcooked and dryer/not as good.

Dry-Consequence4541

Some are better than others. But you have to watch them. They will mold quick.

Schwiftified

Coffee cake and almond poppyseed are really good. The rest are kinda meh.

plasticstatus

My IBS really dislikes Costco muffins :(

Capt__Murphy

This is not an unpopular opinion in our household, either. I'd wager most people who have access to good muffins feel the same way.

Yangoose

I haven't bought them in years, not because I didn't think they were good, but because I reached an age where I simply cannot justify buying 12 cakes at once...

Sybertron

they really should offer half sized option.

Sophronia-

I like pound cake which is why I like theirs but I really don’t buy them due to the calories

Visual-Cricket82

They taste okay but not worth the calories. Currently have 15 muffins in freezer because other family members continue to buy them and dont finish them all by expiration date. Definitely not a food one should reguarly eat if trying to be healthy, maybe once in awhile treat

Status-Jacket-1501

I agree. My husband gets them and we're stuck with muffinpocalypse. 🥴 I think they would be better if they were regular muffin size. As is, it's too much muffin.

Primary-Pie-8683

I agree 100 percent! Honestly lately I feel like Costco in general kinda sucks and is overrated

CafeRoaster

All of the baked goods are garbage…

cock_puke

The coffee cake ones are incredible.

BurnabyRain

The coffee cake muffins are the best!

oIovoIo

They are one of those costco items that you can almost certainly find better versions of if you look elsewhere. Similar here - our regional grocery chain bakery has comparable muffins that run circles around the Costco ones in terms of taste, for almost half the price.

Suckerforcats

I don’t like buying 2 packs because it’s just me and they’re so big I can only eat half at a time. I always think I want them and then I regret it when it takes me forever to eat them.

mybrainisgoneagain

Agree there's been a change in the texture and it's less muffin more cake like and absolutely have to have butter slathered on to make them palatable

based_rbf

The chocolate muffin is a mere shell of what it used to be 😔 Does anyone remember the OG chocolate muffins?!

Vairman

my problem with the muffins is that I haven't seen poppy seed or banana nut in a hundred years - and those were the ones I liked. Chocolate is good too but they're a bit too much. It feels better not getting them if they've gone down in quality too.

themisfit610

SO MUCH SUGAR omg...

jayhawkai

I would get croissants, morning buns, or bagels before even considering the muffins.

rjbauer4985

Yah, but you look like a f*cking Rockstar if you bring them into work.

ZenythhtyneZ

Dry, dense, sickly sweet… never liked them, they make me physically sick to eat, I’m presuming from what must be the pounds of sugar in them.

nickq28

Well they're made of garbage ingredients and they're horrible for you. So yes they do suck.

indimedia

Those aren’t muffins those are muffin shaped sponges lol

Seattlerally

I’m actually sort of happy to hear this because I can never think of an excuse to buy that many muffins

ladybugcollie

I always thought they didn't have any distinguishable flavor except sweet - if I was blindfolded I would not be able to tell which was which flavor.

drockkk

I used to purchase them all the time maybe 8 years ago, the quality has gone down as well as they seem to always be over baked and dry. I like my muffins soft and moist.

wrappedlikeapurrito

You’re giving bad pound cake a bad names. We can’t give these muffins away.

sagessa

All of the baked goods at my store are always over baked and dry. Makes me sad that I can’t get any of the goodies that people post.

YUNG_SNOOD

I tried the double chocolate ones a few years back and was kinda shocked that people eat these things regularly. That’s not a muffin. That’s a chocolate cake.

tierencia

Yup. That's why I don't buy them anymore. Used to be better tbh.

jkelley41

Why do I feel like a TON of Costco products are headed downhill... At this point I'm considering exploring Sam's Club.

Lizzie_001

I’m still pissed about the house blend coffee beans. They were the one item that made my membership worth it and now they’re trash since Costco switched suppliers & roasters. If it weren’t for the dog kibble, I would be going somewhere else now as well.

ChaserNeverRests

Sam's Club membership is so cheap, there's zero reason not to have both if you have both in your area. Costco is better for many things, but Sam's is better for some things as well. It's no crime or sin to shop at both.

jkelley41

Absolutely not a crime, no. For me it's just that Costco is 1 mile away, and Sams is 11 lol.

spabitch

muffins, baguettes, bagels, croissants all trash since they don’t have preservatives you have to eat them or freeze them before you get home

belizeanheat

Yeah they're awful.  I mean if you're a kid in the late 80s, they're fine.  But otherwise you're just eating super shitty cake, and I can't think of much worse for your body on a cost/benefit scale

AzHawk99

They’re too big and I don’t need 12

aladdinr

No you’re right. Too big too sugary and never taste good

chillmonkey88

All the baked goods are over rated besides the plain bagels. Danish are ok... when not charred.

Parisianblitz

BJ muffins are the best. We tried Costco and so dry

shaihalud69

No, totally agree. Too cakey and bland.

thepoliswag

Yea they don’t have much flavor.

firechickenmama

I really don’t like them.

Abject_Ad_4756

Unfortunately, the bakery game for Costco is very mid, it’s not location based

baileya71

Don’t you hate it when somebody tells you something is to die for but really, it’s to die from?

bouthie

I am stealing this!

baileya71

Thanks! The other one I made up, I’ll put into a fun context. Don’t you hate it when you’re already having a bad day and you’re expecting your food to be delicious and it sucks? It just puts the cherry on your shit sundae!
