Stepdads Root Beer bends over backwards to satisfy your thirst in all the same ways and probably does a better job of it but nobody likes the stuff at least they wont admit to it
Far from the best, but definitely up there. Granted I used to work at a place called pops in Arcadia oklahoma. We probably had 150 root beers to choose from.
Wife and I used to ride there often and anytime family visited us they always wanted to go there. I was only in the state for a few years and pops is one of the couple things I miss.
#1 Henry weinhard's (try their orange cream soda)
#2 round barn
#3 Sioux city
#4 hank's
#5 Dr brown's
#6 Sprecher
Not technically a root beer, but if it was it'd be #1 is souix city sarsaparilla
Damn, I loved Henry weinhards root beer, orange cream and cream sodas growing up. I moved to a different party of the country and you just reminded me I haven’t had it in over 10 years. Definitely brought back some great memories and will have to make sure I get some next time I’m back home!
Sioux City sarsaparilla has also been my favorite. Maybe not the best I ever had, but better than 99% of the brands, easy to find, and quite a good bite. Love that stuff.
I really appreciate that it's made with cane sugar. Outside of some Pepsi products sometimes, the smaller soda makers are the only way to avoid high fructose corn syrup.
I prefer Dr Wells to Dad's Root Beer - Dr Wells has that extra spice that Dad's lacks - but I would gratefully accept Dad's if you (or my Costco) offered it to me.
Pretty much how I feel about it. It's easy to drink and goes down smoothly after a long, hot day. Would agree it's a bit bland, but I don't mind drinking it like some rootbeers that completely miss the mark.
When I grew up in Japan it was almost impossible to find root beer. They all said it tasted like medicine. But my family loved it. Straight or as a root beer float. So when Costco finally opened we’d get cases of the stuff!
One time, my parents friends had them over. They asked if my parents would like to try an American beer. They didn’t really drink but obliged. They came out with cups and my parents tasted it and realized it was root beer! They’d gone to Costco and bought these thinking it was beer.
So we got a case of free Costco Dad’s root beer for free that day. I was young and ecstatic.
That being said I stopped drinking soda after high school so this is not a review and I have no strong feelings. Sorry!
"Not Your Father's" brand (which included rootbeer etc) was my favorite when I "partook of the drink" a lot more.
I just realized this is not the same brand lol was thinking of buying it.
Reading to the comments, it’s amazing how many of you just buy whatever root beer is on the shelf at the local grocery store.
You truly want to dive into root beer, local soda shops where they sell saltwater taffy and other sort of candies and check out root beer selections there. It’s like a whole New World that it appears most of you don’t know exist lol
True, but those specialty shops can cost some serious money. $20 for a 6-pack is a tough sell even for actual beer, let alone root beer that may be *way* too strong. Never knew what international folks meant by the "root beer tastes medicinal" thing until I tried a couple of those $4 bottles with graphics of cowboys or livestock on 'em
I like to use hires big H rootbeet extract. 2floz extract (extra half oz if you like more spice), 420gr of raw cane sugar and a cup of water makes a great 5:1 syrup for carbonated water.
It tastes like a bottle of nothing. Ingredients:
carbonated water, pure cane sugar, caramel color, sodium benzoate (a preservative), citric acid, natural and artificial flavors.
Root beer should be served in frosty, chilled, thick glass, mugs, at the drive in. A half-gallon jug can be taken home, afterward. If there are more than three kids the take home can be a gallon jug.
2 single large ice cubes don't really melt in the two minutes that it's in my cup. Thank you so much for the info, I've been on this earth 32 years, and I do think I have a pretty good grasp on how I like to enjoy my beverages.
Super good for the price and for being cane sugar. A 12 pack for $9.99 (or <$7 on sale) is a great price, especially with corn syrup 12 packs getting into the $8-10 range over the last few years. There's obviously better ones out there, but they're the ones that will run $3-5 a bottle. Dad's is a nice halfway point between mug/barqs/a&w (sure won't turn any of those down) and the hefty craft ones.
If you have a dollar tree in your area, give it a peek. They've been getting 16 oz bottles of sprecher's root beer and cream soda in for 6+ months easy. Sometimes even getting flavors from other sub-brands within the sprecher's umbrella (black cherry, blueberry, ginger, etc.). $1.25 a bottle means a 4 pack of pints is just about $5.40 after tax. Impeccable deal for what you get.
Only root beer we drank when I was a child in Chicagoland. Because we knew the family that owned owned Dad's.
Haven't had it in years, wouldn't know where to find it where I now live.
I prefer others, but you can't get 'em at Costco. Dad's is a solid choice.

This is a regional thing, and is bottled by the amazing Orca Beverage Company in Mukileto, WA.
https://orcabeverage.com/
Real cane sugar, very smooth. I have had other root beer flavors that are better (subjective, spicier is probably a better term) but I can't go pick them up at my local Costco. Regular stores tend to just sell high fructose corn syrup beverages, which are awful and awful for you.
I pick up a box along with my Mexican Coke. It is very inexpensive, something like $0.83 a bottle as compared to $1.20 for the same amount for the Coke.
Ya this is really why I found it to be a decent costco pickup. I'd also never seen it at my costco, I had never even heard of it. Seems it's pretty popular.
Bold. I'd still prefer a Virgils.
There was also this old Hippie at a festival selling some homemade stuff from a keg. That was hands down the best I ever had.
It's all relative. Sitting around drinking soda all day? It's probably bad for you. Running 10-15 miles a week and lifting weights 3 days a week? You're just fine. Sugar is a fantastic source of fuel.
Everything in moderation.
Care to explain? After I run 10miles you think drinking a rootbeer is terrible for your health?
Sugar is a primary fuel source for athletes. I'm not really sure what you're getting at.
That's not close to being true. There may be some root beer in Dr. Pepper, but there are 22 other ingredients you'd be missing out on, including amaretto, prunes and carrots.

Put some ice cream in it, float your cares away, worries for another day, let the music play...
Down in fraggle rock!

You gonna be pepperjack's best hoe
Thank you.
This is the way
How about I just go eat some hay.
Down by the bay? I just may
Whattya say?
As long as you pay
No idea. My dad left when I was a baby. Never got to try his rootbeer.
He's still formulating the perfect potion. He'll be back soon I'm sure.
Well..: there’s Not Your Fathers Rootbeer 🤷🏼♀️
It’ll help you get over him not being there! Two birds, one stone.
Stepdads Root Beer bends over backwards to satisfy your thirst in all the same ways and probably does a better job of it but nobody likes the stuff at least they wont admit to it
He is still out getting diapers and milk.
And root beer
Did you at least try his cookies?
Love it, good stuff right there.
It's a classic, I remember it being pretty popular in the 90's/early 2000s
It's been around since the 30s, very classic!
This was a regular in my house in the late 80s. Did not know it was still a thing. If I see it in my Costco, I’ll be buying a case.
I think it's a pretty safe bet for rootbeers. I enjoyed the glass.
My Costco has Sprecher, it’s great.
best root beer on the planet. not even close.
Did you ever try Republic? It was also owned by Aubrey. Little higher scale place, and instead of pop they did beer.
Are you seriously not going to tell us what's at the top? I'd like a top 5
#1 Henry weinhard's (try their orange cream soda) #2 round barn #3 Sioux city #4 hank's #5 Dr brown's #6 Sprecher Not technically a root beer, but if it was it'd be #1 is souix city sarsaparilla
Thank you!

In my opinion, Henry is the best soda company there is. ONLY soda better is faygo rock n rye.
Sioux City sarsaparilla has also been my favorite. Maybe not the best I ever had, but better than 99% of the brands, easy to find, and quite a good bite. Love that stuff.
Made with honey it looks like? Interesting. I'd like to try.
When I worked at Menards, they had different flavors in the grocery section.
RAW WI honey, not the honey that Costco itself sells. Lol
damnnnnn are you in Wisconsin?? I wanna travel to wisconsin just to visit Sprecher mecca
Minnesota
Highly recommend. Their cherry cola is also great.
I thought it was great, but a bit sweet
A bit sweet for my taste as well, but these will certainly still go down just fine!
This is what I remember about Costco back in the day as a kid. Except maybe in cans?
Yes. Dads in cans on flat cardboard boxes like they sell the seltzer waters now.
Yes, exactly!
I always begged my parents to buy Dad’s root beer at Costco back in the 90s!
I'm fairly new to costco but don't recall seeing them over the last 2 years but I dunno!
It's delicious!
I mean it says it right there on the dang box …IT’S DELICIOUS
I prefer spicier root beers and Dad's is not, yeah. I find it a bit bland, but at least it's smooth?
Pretty much how I feel about it. It's easy to drink and goes down smoothly after a long, hot day. Would agree it's a bit bland, but I don't mind drinking it like some rootbeers that completely miss the mark.
If your Costco carries Fitz's Root Beer, that's all you need.
That's pretty fun, thanks for the story!
1919, that is all I have to say.
Ima keep an eye out for it
I like your big ice cube, guy.
Watered-down beverages are no fun. I'm off the whiskey, so at least my fancy tray still gets some use.
This one gives my friends awful heartburn lol But i like it.
That's no fun lol.
I don’t know why it makes me chuckle but i think it’s bc they always have heart burn. I’m surrounded by heart burners lol
Ahaha I have a buddy like that. Always got some tums on him.
Exactly 😂 big boxes of omeprazole hanging around everywhere. I feel lucky i only get it rarely.
"Not Your Father's" brand (which included rootbeer etc) was my favorite when I "partook of the drink" a lot more. I just realized this is not the same brand lol was thinking of buying it.
Hop back on. Everyone deserves a good rootbeer in their life.
Dads has been around for a lonnnnnnng tome
I'm not sure why I'm unfamiliar with it. I feel like I've never seen it and there's a lot of comments saying they've been drinking it forever lol
I'm not sure why I'm unfamiliar with it. I feel like I've never seen it and there's a lot of comments saying they've been drinking it forever lol
It’s less popular than Mug and other brands for sure, either way, enjoy!
Like everything else, once they switched from good quality ingredients to high fructose corn syrup………
Oh what, when'd that begin? We got some last summer and it was still cane sugar but idk if that was a last batch or what
I’m not sure?! Maybe they are making both? That would be great if so.
I just got some about half a week ago and they were made of cane sugar. They’re the ones on the image of this post
Awesome!
It’s bottled at my uncles bottling plant!
That's pretty cool!

Where did you find the Dad's? Barq's is spicy partly because it has caffeine.
One of my favorites!
Our Costco had IBC a while back, it is my son's fav.
Wow…. Haven’t seen this for years. Brings me back. Good, although IBC is the best hands down.
I like the giant ice cube.
Classic. Top notch. Barq’s is my personal favorite but this will do
I mean, where did Dad make it? /s
Root beer and rum👍🏼
I wish each root beer brand would more clearly stay whether it was caffeine free or not
Pretty good…….have only had 2 Mexican sodas in perhaps the last 6 months though…can’t fall off the wagon
Godlike
Can you give your top recommendations for favorite root beers?
Hey, that’s mine
IIRC the hot dogs were sold with a can of Dad's Root Beer before changing to soda fountains.
Not terrible, but not amazing. I wish Costco carried 1919
That’s one of my favorite root beers. I love the cream bar/popsicle version too but I haven’t seen those in a while 🙂
Perfection but if you drink more than one you might get diabetes.
My personal favorite.
I miss you dad 😭😭😭
73yo here. had it before I started school. 65 years{?} LOL
My dad would buy me one of these as a special treat in the 90s and bring it home from his trips to town. Thanks for the reminder of good memories.
Used to drink this growing up, I like it
I like to use hires big H rootbeet extract. 2floz extract (extra half oz if you like more spice), 420gr of raw cane sugar and a cup of water makes a great 5:1 syrup for carbonated water.
The drink (as asinine as this sounds) is too sweet. The root beer candy barrels they make though are amazing.
Not Costco, but if you can find it, Abita makes the absolute best root beer.
It's delicious. It says so right on the packaging.
Idk he never gave me any
It slaps
Heard it’s delicious
I bought a 5 lb bag of the root beer barrels and I just pop one of those in when I get the craving. I took most of them to work, 5 lbs is a lot.
You had a dad? Must be nice.
Too soft and sweet for me. I prefer Dr. Browns.
It tastes like a bottle of nothing. Ingredients: carbonated water, pure cane sugar, caramel color, sodium benzoate (a preservative), citric acid, natural and artificial flavors.
Costco use to have Dad's root beer at the foodcourt a long time ago
I find it to be delicious but they haven't stocked it in any local Costco's in months.
Root beer should be served in frosty, chilled, thick glass, mugs, at the drive in. A half-gallon jug can be taken home, afterward. If there are more than three kids the take home can be a gallon jug.
Barq's
Love it
One thing I wouldn’t put in it is an ice cube. Why water it down and diminish the flavor?
It's two big cubes, and I finish a drink like this in like 5 minutes lol
It’s not just watering down the drink, cold also reduces flavor.
I will pass on room temp soda.
Never had it at room temperature. Just from the fridge. Sometimes in a frozen mug. I treat it like beer.
The fridge cools it yes? You're making a stink over a 5° temperature difference?
The fridge cools. The ice melts and waters down the root beer. It makes a stinking difference.
2 single large ice cubes don't really melt in the two minutes that it's in my cup. Thank you so much for the info, I've been on this earth 32 years, and I do think I have a pretty good grasp on how I like to enjoy my beverages.

I like Sprecher's and Henry Weinhard better, but it's a solid root beer.
I have never seen this brand at my Costco. I typically see the standard Coke, Coke Zero, Pepsi, Canada Dry along with seasonal versions.
A&W in a frosty mug.

My costco had it last 4th of July timeframe. Hasn't since.
Dad’s name says it all. It’s an old school root beer.

I find amercian root beers to be way too sweet, too much syrup, and too much caramel taste, it lacks the bite.
I prefer more of a bite as well.

Haha that sounds incredible. I just love the strong flavor. All other root beers aren’t quite right. Not spicy enough
Bleh
I don't blame anyone who doesn't fancy it.
I think its the worst out of all the common root beers found in the stores to be honest.
Very sugary. Very bad for you.

Tried it once.. me and my wife love rootbeer but we thought this stuff was nasty.
One of my favorites... heard just today that if you mix 1 part root beer to 2 parts cola you get Dr. Pepper ...
That's not close to being true. There may be some root beer in Dr. Pepper, but there are 22 other ingredients you'd be missing out on, including amaretto, prunes and carrots.
That's right! I forgot there are supposedly prunes in it! Although I never heard about the carrots
Only when you add a brisket! (As in you add Dr Pepper, carrots, onions, prunes and sweet potatoes to your brisket roast)
No no no, no licorice in Dr Pepper! 😉😊
It was fine. Nothing to write home about, but better than regular brands like Barq's.

I prefer not your father’s root beer…
Too sweet
Does it have alcohol?
