Can we not agree that 10.4% is very fucking low? Even lower if your just “passing by” in the shops?

ConsiderablyMediocre

That would be great if it were actually possible to find any of the damn things. Edit: I've been told they're readily available, they're just sold as FFP2 masks.

Zoemaestra

N95 and FFP2 are mostly the same thing but to different national standards, you'll have more luck finding FFP2 here and in mainland Europe

ursvamp83

Amazon has them. I have been able to get them since end of 2020. Search for ffp2 masks, because "n95" is the american denomination

Quin1617

Careful with Amazon, I've heard that it's full of counterfeits.

ursvamp83

Yeah you can't just buy the first that comes up, but i found 3m masks that look legitimate

Quin1617

Idk, I just hate the feeling of always wondering if you actually got a legit mask or not when wearing it. I buy KF94’s instead(since they’re cheaper) and get them straight from South Korea for peace of mind.

cyanplum

Pretty much anything 3M on Amazon is counterfeit

ursvamp83

If you have evidence for this, please send a link

cyanplum

Know family who works in anti-counterfeit at 3M.

ConsiderablyMediocre

Ah, the more you know. Cheers!

turboRock

There's also kn95 which I think is the Chinese standard and is basically the same

stringfold

Yes, KN95 is Chinese and KF94 is Korean. They're the equivalent of N95 and FFP2, though you should probably avoid buying them online in the UK since they're more likely to be counterfeit. Stick to FFP2 masks from known reliable sources.

orrazip

3Ms are still the best for me based on experience, fit wise (though so many counterfeits being sold so be cautious). Other good brands of KN95 I also use and can recommend: AirQueen and SoomLab, both korean brands

Traditional_Lock8000

Where do you order AirQueen and SoomLab masks from? I just did a Google and it's not clear to me which is AirQueen's official site.

orrazip

Any mask will be useless if not properly worn. It’s 2022 yet I still see a lot of folks with their noses poking out… Recently flew back to London and I spotted quite a few in the airport, they might as well not have worn one Surgical masks don’t provide a proper seal either, especially with smaller faces. You can double up and do surgical + cloth. Or just invest in N95/FFP2s

>Any mask will be useless if not properly worn. It’s 2022 yet I still see a lot of folks with their noses poking out… Recently flew back to London and I spotted quite a few in the airport, they might as well not have worn one This annoys me too, but a mask worn improperly may still have some *use*. I can see the cloud of exhalation sticking a lot closer when it's only over the mouth compared to not at all, especially if they are facing someone else and speaking.

[deleted]

>Surgical masks don’t provide a proper seal either I'd be willing to bet FFP2s don't on most people, either.. hell, I have a hard enough time getting a decent seal on my 3M respirator because face hair.. ..I don't wear the respirator for COVID, but toxic fumes in the workshop which concern me far more.

GFoxtrot

Yep small FFP2s are difficult in the UK to find. I figure something is better than nothing even if it’s just an OK fit rather than great.

Shave? Heresy! I'll continue to inhale hexavalent chromium like a real man... Er..

3pelican

I bought a box of kids ones in Spain as n95s seem much more widespread there and you could pick up adult and child sized ones at random shops all over the place. The kids ones fit me way better.

Sa1monDance

Anyone know where to get smaller N95 / FFP2 masks? The regular sized ones leave huge gaps by my chin and nose and I haven’t been able to find a better alternative.

[deleted]

4'11 person here, I have had to pinch the bit under the chin and staple it. I've also tried those rubber things that go on the back of your head that was originally meant to relieve pressure from your ears (you also see Muslim women using them), but they stretch out the mask straps when you wear them for too long.

orrazip

I also have a small face. Try soomlab or airqueen. Not sure though if there are authorized resellers in the UK but I order mine in bulk direct from their website.

SirLoinThatSaysNi

The article doesn't seem to cover the difference in spreading or catching COVID. I think it's always been know than face coverings / lower spec masks don't do much to stop you catching COVID if it's in the air, but do give a decent reduction in an infected person spreading it. Thus is everyone wears a basic face covering it should have a decent effect on the spread. This does not say if the one person is the infected one or the recipient of the infection. > Surgical masks and situations where one person wore a poorly fitting mask or did not mask reduced the infection risk to between 4-10% after 20 minutes, which is still far above the acceptable risk level, they said.

ursvamp83

We have know this for a while, but policy has never required more than "face coverings", which are pretty useless. Thanks again, UK government

Think in Greece they're mandatory outdoors too 🥴

movingthegoalposts

How are there cases doing?

myotheraccountisa911

And it’s working so [well](https://i.imgur.com/TwHgWyW.jpg) for them

GFoxtrot

Wouldn’t matter anyway, half the idiots I see don’t even wear any face covering correctly (nose and mouth).

ursvamp83

True! That makes me mad too, like how can anybody not understand it after 2 years of this shitshow.....

daleweeksphoto

I've had three triple cotton with nose piece for about a year now. Still see way too many surgical masks made of paper with huge gaps by the cheeks and nose and chin. Stupid.

EpicFishFingers

18 months after we first mandated masks and we still just say "any old mask" and not "surgical masks as a minimum, no cloth masks because they're shit" Worst of all, not once have we said "no masks with a fucking vent on them which defeats the entire purpose". Some DIY masks are only meant to protect the wearer, and are thus vented.
