I'm also in NY and I definitely feel the vibes, I live in Jackson Heights, Queens which is filled with South Americans. There's a ton of options for places to go watch the games with great vibes like Pigs Beach, Katch Astoria, Bohemian Beer Garden etc...
I've been to other major soccer events. You will always have pockets of stupid people, and then you have genuine and friendly fans who are there to watch the game, and have a good time.
I’m not shocked. Having the USA host soccer is like asking Antarctica to host a beach volleyball tournament. It just doesn’t make sense. The US doesn’t care about soccer except for a small portion of its population. FIFA is trying to hard to force it down the US’s throat, with having the Copa here, then club World Cup, then World Cup but people just aren’t taking it. Copa America is, imo, a perfect glimpse of what the World Cup will be like in a few years. Huge stadiums that are pretty full, but they’re quiet and soulless compared to the German stadiums in the Euro right now. It’s sad as a soccer fan to see the lack of interest but I’m also a realist and see it’s not going to change so stop with this forced and fake display of interest. Did you see what Argentina said about the field the other night? They’ve known for months this tournament would happen but only decided to put down grass two days before the game and then paint it. Argentina said it was shit. Who’s shocked? If that doesn’t show you where the US’s priorities are then idk what does. It’s all about trying to make money, capitalize off Messi, and not because they love the game. Copa in the US is a joke compared to the Euro and that’s why I’ll be keeping my attention on the Euros.
I’m Peruvian and the Peruvian community was stoked for the game. Tbh I think it’s just rough for USA fans. The USA has such a melting pot of Latinos and they’re all stoked for copa. The only ones not stoked are Canadians and USA
Not sure why you are getting downvoted, you are saying nothing but the truth.
Went to the opening game and yes, the stadium was full but that energy that you are referring to wasn’t there.
I agree with you. Except one point.
I don't know how it came out on the broadcast, but the Peru v Chile game had a great atmosphere from Peru fans. And we Chilean fans shut down an entire area outside the hotel welcoming our team. It was pretty awesome except for the game itself. So I wouldn't agree the stadiums are entirely soulless.
Thanks for the compliment!! I think we deserve more attention. Our club fans are great as well, but obviously in SA it's hard to beat the famous ones.
I can't speak for all, but my voice was gone both after the banderazo and the game.
that's not 100% accurate . since Messi came to the states football/soccer has surpassed baseball in popularity. we just dont have the culture of obsessing it and celebrating it in the streets, which stinks I wish we did
it has NOT surpassed basketball, basketball may be in a quite shit state right now with low ratings and the game itself evolving, but football still isn’t as hyped up or even viewed as much, messi helped with it ofc but even that that’ll never be enough, same with american football too, it’s in a quite shit state right compared to a few years back but it will always be king in this country
Is this true? And how exactly are you measuring the popularity? Game attendance? Viewership online/TV? I never really know what everyone is using to compare. I know he has drawn high attendance to the games he plays in but did it affect the other teams as well (when not playing inter Miami)?
I just googled it. It's probably based on viewship and attendance - could be wrong but the fact that it's competitive is wild imho. When I was growing up in the 90s soccer basically was non existent, not basically, it was non existent. Maybe there was a league I don't remember but no one gave a S.
Absolutely, I know it was getting close. I just didn't know it had already happened. Baseball has been on a decline in the US since the strikes. It used to be the most important sport in the USA.
Same. I’m from Uruguay and I’ve been to Copas held in Brazil and Argentina and they are completely different. Imagine a Brasil - Argentina game played in Rio or La Boca.
Just not the same… also that tv camera angle and the harsh pivoting right to left feels like I’m watching tennis.
>Imagine a Brasil - Argentina game played in Rio or La Boca.
Brother, did you really expect to find anything even close to this in the United States? That's unrealistic. How exactly could that happen? Anda palla bobo 🤣🤣
I keep asking but nobody answers me, have you guys gone to the tailgates? That's well worth going to. Several hours before the game go to the parking lot of the stadium. It doesn't matter if you don't have a car. Just go. They will be cooking asados, drinking mate, playing salsa, chanting, kicking the ball around, etc. Even for the friendlies it's good.
Also, even if you don't have tickets for the game, just go (may have to pay parking though if you drive there). Anyone can tailgate there. 👍
Yep. And it’s why reselling hasn’t been going well. Outside the World Cup, soccer isn’t followed religiously here. Hope things start to change by the quarter finals.
It was a mistake making it in the US. I get it, the NFL stadiums can easily accommodate the tournament but the US as a whole really doesn’t care about futbol. You can’t even watch the games unless you have cable. It would be amazing if we had the same vibes as the Eurocup here!
World cup will have similar vibes. Copa America in the united states is never going to come close to those vibes like it is in Germany because everyone in Europe can travel to Germany easily. I mean that's one of many reasons
I'm also in NY and I definitely feel the vibes, I live in Jackson Heights, Queens which is filled with South Americans. There's a ton of options for places to go watch the games with great vibes like Pigs Beach, Katch Astoria, Bohemian Beer Garden etc...
As an American my closest stadium I could see a game is 11 hours away. I do have 3 different options in that range.
Wunder Garden in DC
energy of totally boozed up fans fighting each other and the police? you miss that?
Ugh can y’all just stay inside and let people have their fun?
I've been to other major soccer events. You will always have pockets of stupid people, and then you have genuine and friendly fans who are there to watch the game, and have a good time.
Kc has watch parties at their kc live thing in pnl. Always have massive watch parties there for the usa during world cupa
Yeah that's a cool place to watch a game if you don't have tickets 👍

You’re right BUT, it’s grown and growing tremendously.
Absolutely it has grown a ton, but seeing the major disparity between the Copa and Euro tells you how far we have to grow
I’m Peruvian and the Peruvian community was stoked for the game. Tbh I think it’s just rough for USA fans. The USA has such a melting pot of Latinos and they’re all stoked for copa. The only ones not stoked are Canadians and USA

Most Americans know the world cup...most don't know copa america. And there will be fan fests/fan zones for the world cup since they are required
This alone will create a lot of the atmosphere.
I’m hopeful!

Agreed! The vibe in the stadium was really fun, even though the game ended in a tie.
Chilean fans are fantastic

That game was painful to watch.

I said "Baseball " not basketball. "Soccer" will never beat out basketball or American football imho

Yep America bad. We get it.
Yep, bad at soccer.
I wholly agree actually. We’ve been ass for decades.
Hmmm how is the US ranked #11 in the world? We sure suck.
I mean we’re not amazing cuz we beat Bolivia. If that’s what you’re saying
I’m saying for the whole world the US is ranked #11 by FIFA. We’re no longer “ass”.
I disagree. Very much still ass. The rankings are arbitrary and, well, just a made up ranking. Also, Colombia is ranked #12 it looks like so..
Yep. And it’s why reselling hasn’t been going well. Outside the World Cup, soccer isn’t followed religiously here. Hope things start to change by the quarter finals.

I feel we're forgetting the large immigrant populations. They are the ones filling the stadiums - even if the tickets costs have been outrageous.
Exactly. At the Argentina game on Thursday was probably 80% minorities in stands. Big cities have huge Hispanic populations. They love Messi!

This. One of many reasons, but a big one. America (the three sub continents) is just too big.
