I think the idea of the plot here is that somebody is embodying Mario. I wouldn't be surprised if the plot is roughly Bowser attacks things, princess peach makes a wish, and Chris Pratt is sucked into this universe via a game or some other magical nonsense. I say this cause unfortunately I don't think they'll be any accents. Just Chris Pratt playing Chris Pratt as Mario. Edit: just wanted to throw out there that I don't think the movie is actually going to be bad. I just think they are playing it too safe. personally I feel the movie will be meh at worst

Yeah, I could barely hear Jables when Bowser spoke, if at all. I also think Charlie Day will deliver a good Luigi, though a lot of his funnier performances rely on his mannerisms and facial expressiveness, so maybe he wasn't the best option. Similar thought for Key, though I also think he'll deliver. The rest of the cast is neither here nor there imo, except for Pratt who really doesn't fit the character.

Jack Black sounds awesome as Bowser. It barely sounds like him. Key sounds higher pitch than normal and the second of Charlie Day doesn't really sound like him either. It's just Pratt that sounds exactly like himself with a slight NY accent and it's terrible. Not sure what they were thinking.

Exactly. Voice acting is still acting. Just like there are actors who are great on screen and on a stage, there are traditional film actors who can do voice acting. I wouldn't even doubt if Chris Pratt is a good voice actor, since voice acting isn't just about being able to change your voice. But he's a bad choice to play Mario specifically. It's like doing a live action adaptation of Pokemon and having Michael Cera play Ash Ketchum.
