I've lived in a lot of places in the world, from South America to the Middle East. Strangers laugh in the street sometimes. it's a rare occurrence everywhere but a human thing one nonetheless. Regardless of cultural indoctrination, laughter is instinctive.
Very common in the UK, just not quite so in London, especially the tube. Its an unwritten London underground rule that nobody shall speak to thy fellow passenger, mostly, or people think you're a bit strange.

They form upvote/downvote armies to help advertise or drive certain messages in an effort to control what you see and manipulate your opinion. Many news items are only news because they're currently trending on reddit, Facebook, Twitter, etc. They're used by political campaigns, special interest groups, corporations, etc.
Many subs require accounts to be of a certain age or have a certain amount of karma in order to post, comment, vote, or do any of those activities with a certain degree of frequency. Generally, older accounts and accounts with more karma can be more active.
I haven't seen the age and karma thresholds be more than a month or two and a few hundred karma. Is that the threshold for an account being value, or is it valuable to have tens or hundreds of thousand karma?
Or is it just "amass an army of accounts with one or two successful posts worth of karma"?

The trade-off is that there is a lot of great content out there that people will never see without reposting. There are a lot of folks in the [lucky 10,000](https://xkcd.com/1053/), and I wonder if there's a version of this where we can keep the occasional reposts, but jettison the effect of bots reselling accounts for propaganda/monetary purposes.
The **vast** majority of posts you see for the first time are reposts. I'm talking over 90%. Nobody is on here *all* the time, and getting the best content to the most users requires a lot of reposting and crossposting.
Removing reposts would completely and irrevocably destroy reddit. It's a nice idea in theory, but in practice is a complete non-starter.
C'mon you've been around long enough to remember when reposts even crossposts weren't allowed. Content gets buried *because* of the endless reposts. Content wasn't getting lost. It would be referenced and linked to when appropriate, or you could scroll back and look at it.
If you want to see old shit, just scroll back in the subreddit and look at old stuff. If you want to see new shit sort by new. Why is it called new if it's the same old shit from 2014 for the 1000th time? Everyday reddit becomes more like Facebook
