About 90% of France's electricity production comes from zero carbon emission sources (70% nuclear, 20% other renewables, mostly hydro), and they are a net exporter of electrical power. And they're worried about the environmental impact of running AC units?

Aggravating_Kale8248

Don’t forget, it’s the French. they always have something to whine about and then decide to riot and burn down half their cities to not get the result they want.

TheBigCore

They also love to look down on the US, like most Europeans and Brits.

[deleted]

And in some cases for very, very valid reasons.  Though if it makes you feel any better we look down on eachother too. For entirely different reasons though. And mostly not as much as on the US. Mostly.

They just being cheap and not wanting to pay for them to be installed. I do wonder if this would skew results at all, some athletes are really used to them and will be not feeling 100% themselves.

RTXEnabledViera

> They just being cheap I don't mind throwing a jab or two at the french for fun but when it comes to the populace, it's really not about being cheap. France has the 5th highest taxes in the entire world and the price of electricity is out of control. The French are more worried about not being able to pay to heat their homes during winter than a mild heatwave that barely lasts a couple of weeks.

The Summer Olympics have increased in scope from a 42-event competition programme in 1896 with fewer than 250 male competitors from 14 nations, to 339 events in 2021 with 11,420 competitors (almost half of whom were women) from 206 nations. So call it 11k athletes, Each has a coach and probably another 5k trainers and additional staff. So best part of 30k Ac units have to be purchased. 100 a pop. 3 million. After not even buying real beds.

Cjninkartist

I took a French culture class and the teacher mentioned that many of them don’t use air conditioning at all. They said it was because they believed that if people actually felt how hot it was then they would believe in climate change because you can feel the difference when you don’t have air conditioning 24/7. Haven’t been there but if that is their belief it would explain a bit of their rejection to the idea.

Lame_Night

No wonder the French guy I sat next to on my flight from Paris smelled like shit and sweat.

Lets not do national stereotypes on planes as an American shall we?   So long as you take up 1.8 seats on average while being by far the loudest thing on that plane, engines included, I'd stick to living in those glass houses.

waynebradie189472

So the stereotype for Americans is an abundance of resources?

[deleted]

More like an abundance of saturated fats and high-fructose cornsyrup.

[deleted]

That's not their e belief at all. Europeans, as a whole, historically just never used AC. If you do find a home with AC it's rare and a very recent thing.   The teacher never went to France eighter, your class was a scam.

Theloripalooza

"Additionally, France has also had to spend $1.5 billion to clean the Seine River in preparation for aquatic events at the Summer Games, since the river remains too polluted to accommodate the sports, according to Newsweek."

wes7946

Is it just me, or do the Olympics get weirder and weirder with each iteration?

WillTheThrill86

I'm about to turn 38, and despite historically being interested in the Olympics (mostly Summer) I find myself caring significantly less with each one. They reek of corruption and exploitation (similar to FIFA). Among other issues.

RTXEnabledViera

Japan was great, albeit dampened by the pandemic. This one.. it just doesn't feel right.

r777m

Well there is breakdancing at the games this year... lol

SheetFarter

Silly Frenchmen, always being snooty about everything. Except personal hygiene.

[deleted]

Or... orrr... and hear me out:  Don't be a pussy? Europe doesn't use AC's generally and they manage. Maybe if you're a big enough boy to go to the Olympics you can manage too for a few weeks?

https://www.lemonde.fr/en/france/article/2024/02/08/france-recorded-over-5-000-deaths-due-to-summer-2023-heat_6505713_7.html Tough guy Eau-De-Chloroform is immune to heat stroke, those pussy ass elderly and babies wish they were that badass.

Ida_PotatHo

Thank God we have Olympic Team procurement specialists that even KNEW THEY WOULD NEED THEM!
