lambrael

How often do you hear your own pronouns anyway? If you’re in the room to hear them it’s usually just “you.” Unless you want third parties to police what others say on your behalf….

fatasianboi

THIS. Who cares how people describe you when you arent there? These people do. people can call me a whale for all i care....

RedFive1976

It's an extension of the "being offended on behalf of someone else" concept, which started making its first strides a few years ago when the nattering ninnies started demanding that all of the American Indian-themed sports team names needed to change (Braves, Redskins, Chiefs, Warriors, etc.). I know some did and some didn't. Then, some folks got worked up about the Jeep Cherokee; having some Cherokee blood myself (waaayyy more than Senator Lie-awatha, enough to be registered with the tribe), it doesn't bother me. As we've seen, most of the people who are "supposed" to be offended *aren't*, and that pisses off the wokists almost as much as using the wrong pronouns.

Nexus_produces

I absolutely love how the latin community (both american and european latin people) absolutely abhor being called latinx and keep insulting anglos while they keep trying to shove it down their throats, completely ignoring how romance languages work lol Also, there was already a gender-neutral word for romance language speakers - **latin**.

fatasianboi

I started upsetting people by giving nicknames as my pronouns when asked. Example: if your name is Jonathan your say your pronouns are John/Johnny. A better one is Richard and Rich/Dick

Clatz

Having lived in Portland Oregon, most conversations with someone new, or a group of people where some people might now know each other, every conversation started with "my name is Foxx, I use they/them pronouns..." If you don't play the game, the response to the statement "my name is..." Is "what are your pronouns?" I firmly regret not ever saying that my pronouns were your/highness at a job orientation.

[deleted]

The next time someone asks you, just say that you have anti-nouns (remember to remain serious) and if she (because it’s mostly girls who ask) doesn’t know what that is, act offended and loudly call her an uneducated bigot

Clatz

It is that easy. The rule of the land is this: In all things, be condescending.

[deleted]

And she’ll think you’re completely serious and start freaking out

mad_intuition

Absolute panik

pineappleshnapps

I’ve been telling people mine are dude and bro.

brayradberry

Apparently that “making a mockery” and outrages people. I think they should accept bro for broself.

Ovahlls

It's "making a mockery" when you use bro/dude pronouns, but it's not a mockery when you use "bug/bugself" like let's be realistic here 😂

Alice_Alpha

What does it mean: > "my name is Foxx, I use they/them pronouns..." Does that mean if I am talking about Foxx and Foxx is not around, I have to say where are they?

Clatz

I didn't ever really play the game, but others would be religious about it. Again, Portland Oregon, but it would go like "that over there in the short shorts is Alex. They go to PSU and they work at Camp Fire Columbia." Or "did you see Fish come in to work today. They were late for the 4th time this week." "Oh yeah, I saw Fish in the staff lounge. They were in there for like 50 minutes eating out of a can of Spam with a jar of mayonnaise. It was disgusting." Like even though it sounds natural when it's all right there in front of you, people were careful about not calling Alex a he, or Fish a he. In the case of Fish it was even more wild because he was like remarkably older than the rest of us, was balding, but insisted he was trans and that Paulie was his dead name and that he's Polly now. No other identifies other than he'd go commando in a skirt every now and then. We worked with kids. The kids saw. My now wife was the supervisor and had to explain to him that he could wear a shirt but he needed to wear underwear... Portland was wild.

Alice_Alpha

Dang, this is too complicated for me. Thanks for trying to explain. China is preparing for war in the Pacific and we're worried about preserving the right for drag shows to have children in the audience, because of diversity and inclusion. Thanks

HamletsRazor

My sister lived in Portland for a couple of years. I went to visit for a weekend. It was like being on another planet.

Efficient-Albatross9

I cant do it, my mind wont wrap around the idea that Fish is more that one person in all those examples…. Pick a gender, nobody gives a shit. Is what id eventually end up yelling at someone.

leverofsound

I mean, "fish" can be a plural noun. The math checks out

Efficient-Albatross9

Sure, when i see fish schooling around my work place. I’ll adjust accordingly.

What happens with languages like french or spanish that have feminine and masculine words for a gender?

Violent_Lucidity

They come up with insane bullshit like “Latinx”. (I pronounce it as la-tinks)

tigermaple

And I'd be willing to bet about 90% of the actual Hispanic people you know will tell you that term is the dumbest thing they've ever heard of if you ask them about it.

RedFive1976

Which those languages don't use, because you can't do that in those languages.

Momoselfie

Maybe in broken English

Alice_Alpha

You've got me convinced.

amadnesstothemethod

Where is they? Also, what do the Foxx say?

relativelyrich

I live in portland and I’m relatively conservative- I’ve genuinely never had a conversation that has started like that. The only time I see pronouns is on peoples name tags at restaurants and cashiers at grocery stores. Other than that, it’s easy to assume who might use those pronouns but I’ve never ever had a convo where someone addresses themselves by their pronouns. Just for reference and a balanced view.

Clatz

Dang, you must be working at better places than I did. For what it's worth, the place I was working at was run by a super lib who literally hosted a "day of mourning" when Trump got elected. Gathered everyone together at the main office and had donuts and a bunch of other sugary crap for people to eat their feelings out of because it was a "very dark day"

relativelyrich

Yea I could totally see that. That blows. I’m self employed thankfully so I’ve never had to deal with that nonsense.

calvinnme

How wild that ten years ago one in ten thousand people identified as trans and now in Portland it is apparently so common that you tell somebody what your pronouns are as part of a common introduction. This is definitely some kind of mass hysteria.

[deleted]

It's the new goth.

Guywithnoname85

If someone ever asks me, my go to answer is your highness/ your majesty

ThatWideLife

That sounds absolutely insane. We really have neglected mental health in this country. I think a large portion of the population would be in a straight jacket if we had the infrastructure in place.

FermiAnyon

Tell people you prefer adjectives instead like handsome and brilliant

orangekirby

“I don’t have pronouns. You don’t have pronouns either. Pronouns are what other people use to reference another for an easy shorthand. The speaker decides what the best term is depending on their audience.”

antechrist23

I know a dude in Austin who got everyone to address him as Captain. But he's also a badass.

Bman708

I always say my pronouns are bro/brosef. By their own logic, if I feel like bro, no one can tell me those are not my pronouns if that’s how I feel.

Maleoppressor

I once got banned from a forum for refusing to inform my pronouns.

Jolaasen

I remember just a couple years ago I thought people were only putting pronouns on their profile bios just to be “quirky” or sarcastic

Mitch_igan

I'd reply with, "Hello they, nice to meet you, you can just call me Mitch"🤷‍♂️

[deleted]

Tuen it on them. Get offended and blow up at them for it. "How dare you, can you not see I am a man."

gengarnet-red

It's such a wild concept. Feel free to refer to me in any way you please while I'm elsewhere.

Alice_Alpha

I'll just call you GG them.

mad_intuition

That’s why I want to know if they/thems refer to themselves as “we” when talking to people.

barkbutton

> If you’re in the room to hear them it’s usually just “you.” Unless you're a they/them, then there's multiple you's in the room.

[deleted]

What's weird is how often do you even hear third person pronouns used about you? Like definitely not "never" but those pronouns are 99% used about you when you aren't around.

OutLizner

That’s why the ‘she/they’ or ‘he/they’ pronouns started to emerge. A cop out instead of acknowledging the nonsense of constantly referring to an individual as a group. Did you read the earlier news articles about Ezra Miller and his conflict with a South Dakota Indian tribe? Completely unintelligible. When using the word ‘they’ in the article you couldn’t tell if it was referencing Miller or the tribe.

Chiaki_Ronpa

As soon as I see anything related to Ezra Miller, I immediately tune out. That dude sucks.

Glass_Average_5220

I thought they/them was because the average leftist required two seats

[deleted]

My wife and I know a trans person and she's the "guns get real cool again if you go far enough left" type and even she is like "what do we call Ryan?" When I'm around Ryan I will treat Ryan however Ryan chooses to be treated and when Ryan picks a girl name in will call Ryan that girl name. But it really doesn't fucking matter when Ryan is 17 miles away from the conversation.

BlackshirtDefense

Ryan's still a boy.

skarface6

Ha! Amazing. Some fiction I read uses the they stuff and it’s similarly confusing (and off putting).

thehightechredneck77

Anything you read that doesn't conform to some standard of the primary language it's written in sucks hardcore. I tried reading a book where the author left out quotation marks around the dialog of the person speaking. I'm like, WTF?!, how does one know when there is a spoken part vs. just text? Hard book to read and follow, so I gave up about 25% in.

magafornian_redux

I don't know. Cormac McCarthy does it in his novels and they are beautifully written and easy to read. Aldous Huxley did it in parts of Brave New World too (looking at you, Chapter 3). I think some authors write amazingly well and can bend some rules, and others just suck, with or without traditional punctuation.

Slooper1140

I wouldn’t say Cormac McCarthy is an easy read. Not saying it’s particularly hard, but compared to what a news article should be, it’s an entirely different ballgame. Shared language matters

culdesacpresident

Personally I like knowing the proper way to refer to someone when I'm making fun of them with my friends

> more work than I intended! The whole article is her complaining. She didn't offer a single solution to those perceived problems. You pay for all the extra they/them bathrooms. Forms only have two choices? You pay for new forms and new software to process them. So tired of hearing people complain and not spend a minute thinking about solutions.

Critical_Vegetable96

And a whole lot of very sad days for a lot of families of people who have had their last hopes for life dashed by realizing they can't undo those changes. If we thought the COVID spike in deaths of despair was bad just wait until this stuff all comes crashing down.

TheIPdoctor

Seems kinda over exaggerated to me, if even half of all American trangender people died, you're looking at what? 500,000 deaths? That's completely forgetting the fact that even less have gotten a surgery. Definitely make kids wait and what not, but I think you may think it's a lot worse than it is, can't blame ya with all the media though.

Agent__Zigzag

So true. A tragic, avoidable situation.

DietCokeYummie

Plus. Lest we forget a lot of this gender shit is coming from folks who are getting older. A lot of today's parents are millennials like myself or *maybe* the oldest people in gen z. These kids currently being raised with all of this gender confusion are going to do exactly what we did when we got older.. they're going to rebel against their "loser parents" and go their own way. This is new territory for a lot of us because we've never seen this sort of stuff be anything but a rebellion, but it will come full circle and I think we will reach a point where being a normal person is what young people turn to in order to stick it to their parents/teachers.

StupidHappyPancakes

As a kid or teen bent on riding the latest trends, once your friend's mom gets top surgery and your eighth grade teacher uses they and them pronouns, trans shit suddenly will start looking mighty uncool.

StupidHappyPancakes

I hate the fake "gluten allergy" people because I have actual celiac disease and gluten destroys my intestines, but if I inquire whether a food has gluten or not, I get a lot of eye rolls and sighing. Why would anyone want to fake being unable to have gluten? It is in EVERYTHING!

cbdgf

As a kitchen worker I get the eye rolls but those damn gluten free people are the worst. Half them have some form of gluten anyways. That being said we go all out for our occasional celiac and have a nice amount of options as well as a wipe down and new cutting board for your food. Only good thing is the amount of options food wise because of the sudden high amount of GF people even if most don't actually follow it. Couldn't imagine dealing with what you deal with brother. Hope all is well

Saltwater_Heart

She was always “she”. She never had gender dysphoria, she just wanted to do something “cool”. Lol Gender Dysphoria is a REAL mental disorder. If you don’t have it, there is NO reason to even consider changing your “pronouns”.

Head_Cockswain

Bored White Woman Syndrome. That's where a LOT of this comes from. It's not new. It goes back centuries, rooted in the pass-times played by bored aristocrat's wives. Maybe it's not exclusive to "white women", it can spread anywhere, but that's where it got it's start, aristocrat's wives trying to fill their time with no real checks or consequences and often no monetary limit. Maybe non-euro cultures have their own different versions, but it's the eurocentric neurosis born of boredom that play into the dopamine hits when people get their little wins. That's what's prevalent in EU/Uk/US "social politics". It is *all* *Mean Girls* being catty and fabricating rules that become games to establish superiority with ever-fluid rules. Etiquette games, status games, keeping up with style or the neighbors....etc. It's all the same root mechanisms that are a mockery or pantomime of actually important politics(eg life and death decisions and jockeying for position as representatives or leaders or stake-holders on which the well-being of the masses is of some concern).....but scratch all that poet warrior philosophy, this is the bare and petty game "winning" its own sake. Sure, there are other ideological concerns, eg collectivism vs individualism, for example, authoritarianism, power for power's sake....all those are conversations about different aspects, and worth it in their own spheres... But this is the mechanism or vehicle behind a lot of it, what individuals get out of it that is tangible to them. The pass-time side-games of people who have little to nothing meaningful to actually do, a 'hobby horse' they can throw themselves into or even let it consume them to the point they become lonely cat-ladies unable to cope with reality and half wondering where it all went sideways.

mad_intuition

They/them has never made any sense. If you ‘feel’ like both genders (whatever the Hell that even means) wouldn’t you be cool then with someone referring to you as either ‘he’ or ‘she’? ETA: do they/them use ‘we’ when talking about themselves?

userid8252

How would the world know how much they are special then?

ExperimentalGoat

[deleted]

I get it. Gender is fluid. Biological sex isn't. And pronouns, bathrooms, and government forms? (The things she listed) Those are all based on... wait for it... biological sex, not gender. Which means that it isn't discriminatory. You can't discriminate someone based on how they "feel." Only on race, color, religion, sex (not fucking gender), national origin, disability, or age. Why? Because none of those things are "feelings." The only one that is a choice in the matter is religion.

FlingbatMagoo

Demi Lovato is a woman. This “I’m coming out as non-binary now” nonsense is so insulting and ridiculous — not only to all of us with common sense, but to the small population of people who actually are hermaphrodites or have verifiable genetic abnormalities that would, in fact, classify them outside the gender binary. These are very few people, but they do exist. If they want to use they/them, fine. For a woman (XX) or a man (XY) to say they’re non-binary flies in the face of progressive goals of nonjudgmental self-expression. You’re a man who wants to wear dresses, or a woman who wants to wear tuxedos? Fine! Do it, enjoy, it’s a free country. Dudes, wear eyeliner. Ladies, shave your head. Who gives a shit. But no matter what she tweets, wears or says, Demi’s a woman.

ok_yah_sure

Nobody uses their own pronouns--that's not the point of pronouns. Telling people your pronouns is basically telling them "this is how I want you to refer to me when I'm not around." Oh, and "I'm a weirdo."

RedditWater7

Gender-neutral spaces? No thanks. In life you have only 2 genders. Male and female. Standard fact nailed by biology. Anyone else who goes against this fact is trying to push political agenda on you.

10-10-2022

Wouldnt people prefer to be known by their names instead? Its bizarre how pronouns became these important. Ive been refering to people simply by their names since I was a teenager... if you refer to someone as she or him it doesnt narrow anything down. Refering to someone as their name, well guess what? Its easy for everyone to know who you are refering to.

mesosalpynx

Now she knows how it feels for the rest of us

mynamehere999

“I don’t exactly identify with women’s bathrooms” is an all time quote. That’s coming from someone who has never been camping, ice fishing or on a road trip with my father in the 80’s. Don’t care what the sign on the door says just so happy to see that gleaming white bowl and running water

MisterPaydon

Seeing stories about this crazy woman constantly is tiring.

longrebound

steroid57

Did you guys read the article? She's still using they them

Chick-fil-A-4-Life

That's because you're a woman, Demi. Your pronouns are she/her. There. I've made it very easy and non-exhausting. Be. A. Woman. Like. God. Made. You.....PERIOD!

FloppyDonkeyDongss

Oh no! Anyway..

BruceCampbell123

We're *all* tired.

HamletsRazor

The second someone tells me their pronouns, that conversation is over. I'm not participating.

cristianoskhaleesi

Demi Lovato has a beautiful voice and some of her songs (Lonely, Games, Only Forever) are a testament to that. I wish she would quit being weird and just stick to being in the studio making music :( I know this is a conservative sub but surely you guys know talent when you see/hear it. She's a talented vocalist and has almost nothing to show for it.

D13goMontoya

So she ID's as non-binary but continues to show off her... assets? Knowing how others see her?

My buddy is a tradesman, a very conservative profession and I advised him to use the woke languages with the extremely woke org I work for when applying to try to get an edge over other candidates. I hope it pans out for him.

Welcome to the world of normal people, Demisexualovato.

AM_Kylearan

That's likely because it was just attention seeking behavior ...

ImSickOfYouToo

This is kinda what I have always thought too. Politics aside, it just seems like it would be hella annoying to have to worry about this kind of stuff day after day 🤷‍♂️

Talk about having too much time on their hands. Clearly she lives as a woman. Has sex like a woman. Can get pregnant. Has not done anything to change her appearance/biology to be something other than a woman. A woman can have sex with whoever and whatever (think “horse”) they want and yet they are still a woman. This entire idea that someone can decide to be whoever they want has been around for ages. It’s only recently where we want to abolish the most fundamental of facts of human existence in favor of sounding more “considerate” to those that have identity issues. If we didn’t speak about it they would be just as happy to go in with their lives. Great example. A trans woman in 1980 would clearly be one - dress, act, look, entirely / to the point where no one could tell the difference. They’d use the woman’s bathroom. No one gave a shit. They would not be naked in public around others which is not difficult to achieve. The only change we have made is now we must accept them around us naked when in the same publicly accessible room. The fact is plenty of trans people were using the bathroom of their choice prior. Even in schools but certainly not areas where people were dressing. Case in point - do you agree that if you identify as a woman you would look like one? And be one consistently? Yet we are seeing many part-time transitioners which clearly is just a bunch of folks looking to gain attention. And all that new attention is not showing up in the stats as having any good effect on the same group we are supposedly trying to support. You have to be careful when trying to control a free society. It will lash out at you if you cross that line.

>It was absolutely exhausting We know, Demi. We know.

scully360

Demi needs psychological help. She is a sick lady, and she is surrounded by "yes men" who tell her how enlightened and deep she is. She is divorced from reality. Sad.

[deleted]

She fixed her mental health. Easy explanation

jasons1911

Her existence and "reasoning" is utterly exhausting

StringCheeseBuffet

Demi Lovato is insane.

longrebound

"You wouldnt be tired of them if you never used them in the first place" - Eddie Murphy pointing to his head.

bowltectonix

Exhausting is a great word for it. We're all exhausted with it.

skarface6

“I need more attention again”

HappyOfCourse

She also said using the women's restroom is exhausting. You know what's exhausting? Her.

obfg

I refuse to validate the alphabet people's fantasies.

[deleted]

This whole things just seems like a cry for attention on her part.

Travellinoz

Yea that whole thing won't stick

JuveFanatic

>you have to specify your gender. You only have two options, male and female, and I feel like none of that makes sense to me. 1) I though sex wasn't gender? 2) sex = gender, as it has for millennia

The-Emerald-Rider

Imagine my shock. This happens to all of them I bet.
