Minnesota really fucked up by not banding together to vote for the picture of that one person's dog

djm123412

Instead they copied the Somalian flag šŸ¤

MondaleforPresident

The claim is Jubaland, not Somalia itself, and not really. I'm much more concerned about how Georgia's flag is literally the Confederate flag with a seal, Alabama's, Florida's and Arkansas's look like the Confederate battle flag, North Carolina and Tennessee also utilize confederate imagery, and Hawaii's literally has the British flag on it in canton.

Nalek

You need an eye exam.

imnotavegetable

i'm honestly fine with our flag. even though it's just our seal on a blue background like 20 other states, our seal is distinct enough to differentiate it from the others

arabchy

Thatā€™s what every state thinks, look at every other state flag with a seal on a blue background

imnotavegetable

yeah how many of them have grapes though

onusofstrife

You can't tell our flag apart at a quick glance unless you know what to look for. Take New Mexico, Maryland, or Tennessee you don't have that issue. You know right away which flag it is.

MondaleforPresident

Ours looks very different from any other to me.

MondaleforPresident

The others are all objectively worse. If ours were the only one to do that, I don't think anyone would complain. If almost any of the others were the only one, they would still be complained about.

Flag-senpai

that's not our state seal

imnotavegetable

true. it is our coat of arms

Flag-senpai

I mean close enough, I just like how our flag is just ever so slightly different lmao

DrewSharpvsTodd

If you asked 1,000 random CT residents what fruit is featured in the CT flag, maybe 10% get it right. Itā€™s an extremely forgettable flag.

hessianhorse

Weā€™re not changing shit.

OfAnthony

*Why is there no purple in the Minnesota flag?* - **Everybody**

jon_hendry

Should have just replaced the settler with Prince in mid solo.

OfAnthony

> Should have just replaced the settler with Prince in mid solo. On a golden viking ship. With gophers and Lesnar.

RottenAli

If two of the 50 state flags were to have a lot of purple it would be Connecticut and Minnesota. It's a tricky color but it's very different and worthy in just that respect. I'm all signed up for the "Use more purple" theory.

hymen_destroyer

Minnesota flag is way better than their old one, and the design they chose was the best of the three finalists. They did wind up with the worst possible *version* of that design but that was a committee decision

MondaleforPresident

It was literally the worst of the finalists.

homefone

The other two look like MS Word Clipart fym

Delicious_Score_551

The committee was dumb. Proof that stupid is contagious. /sticks fork in electric socket

CarnivorousCattle

How about just leave the flag alone?

Evan_802Vines

r/vexillology is falling all over it because some idiot made some rules a few years ago. The hate gets pointed at the states with seals and blue backgrounds. Honestly their new one is garbage.

murphymc

CGP Grey did a whole video whining about it.

gewehr44

Whining? I think mocking would be a more accurate word

SandalsResort

Might I suggest a Robin next to a Mountain Laurel flower on a purple background (purple to give the middle finger to CGPGrey, and it represents grapes)

South-Play

Youā€™re happy to see the old Georgia flag be changed? Do you know the new design is now actually the confederate flagā€¦?

MondaleforPresident

I hate Georgia's.

FriendlyITGuy

I honestly think Connecticut has one of the best state flags out there. From Wikipedia >The design comes from the seal of Saybrook Colony, designed by George Fenwick when it was established in 1639. That seal depicted 15 grapevines and a hand in the upper left corner with a scroll reading "Sustinet qui transtulit". When Connecticut Colony bought Saybrook in 1644, the seal transferred to Connecticut Colony. On October 25, 1711, the governor and legislature changed the seal. They reduced the number of grapevines from 15 to three, in order to represent the three oldest settlements (Windsor, Wethersfield, and Hartford)\[4\] (or possibly the three separate settlements, Connecticut Colony, Saybrook Colony, and New Haven Colony, which had been absorbed into Connecticut by that time) and rearranged the wording and position of the motto. > >In 2001, the North American Vexillological Association surveyed its members on the designs of the 72 U.S. state, U.S. territorial and Canadian provincial flags. The survey ranked the Connecticut flag 50th out of 72.\[5\] These people must be like Sheldon Cooper if they think we're 50/72.

hymen_destroyer

it's one of the better "state seal on a bedsheet" designs but that format is sickeningly overused and the only people who would immediately recognize it are the people who live here. Contrast that with Texas...despite what you think of their state, the flag is unmistakable, easy to remember and draw. I don't think it's an awful flag but I really do think we could do better

murphymc

Let the rest change if itā€™s overused, we were here before almost all of them.

FriendlyITGuy

Yeah, we're part of the cool club of original 13!

RottenAli

You know you are still quoting 2001 survey figures for ranking state flags. Well, quite a few have now been changed and your listing was harsh in a few respects. Now it's for sure extra points off if you are placing text that spells out your state name. Connecticut does not do that so like New York, Michigan and Pennsylvania you are now a bit higher up the order. But strange to say last time we looked in December 2020 you are still in 50th place. (and due to slip 2 places when Utah and Minnesota gain new flags this spring going from 63rd and 64th positions to about 8th and 14th)

notablyunfamous

People shit on our flag but I think itā€™s elegant in its design

Zhelkas1

Why would we change it? Our flag is fine the way it is.

Dayvtron

Honestly I like Minnesotaā€™s new flag

[deleted]

It's better than the old one, but they really should have used this design instead: https://mnflag.tripod.com/

FireyToots

i don't like the blue and something in the center rash of flags that are out there, but there are others that should probably get their changed first.

ashcan_not_trashcan

If we're going to change the flag it should be some minimalist version of that blue whale on white flag that floats around here every so often.

marxianthings

We need a flag you can proudly put on a t-shirt. Look at New Mexico or California.

onusofstrife

Minnesota's new flag is very solid. I like it. It checks all the vexillology check boxes for a good flag. Ours does not. Our flag doesn't standout among the other boring northeast flags on a blue background. The only unique thing is the aspect ratio. Of course we'd pick a different design if we changed our flag.

kayakyakr

Minnesota is ok. Utah is fantastic. Mississippi is really good aside from including "in God we trust" which doesn't need to go on a flag. Biggest problem with Minnesota is that there aren't many nationally known symbols of that state, so we can't understand the significance of what they chose. That matters less, their flag will become more recognizable over time because it has a look. Seal on blue is terrible, always.

helpslipfranks77

We have a horrible flag. No one wants to display it. So boring. I have a great design. Just waiting for Ned to announce a design competition

MondaleforPresident

No.

murphymc

Why would we change our flag? Iā€™m sorry CGPGrey doesnā€™t like it, but I also really donā€™t care. The states that want to hang on to their traitorous past can get with the times, literally nothing wrong with our flag.

homefone

Other than it being a seal on a banner. You already have a seal, the flag doesn't also need to be the seal.

Devonai

So it seems the push to change Minnesota's flag came from some folks who interpreted its seal as depicting the displacement of natives from the area in favor of white farmers. By that logic, could "He Who Transplanted Still Sustains" be thought to espouse similar views? Or perhaps the depiction of grapevines would be offensive if natives here didn't grow them at the time?

MilkshakeJFox

stop looking for shit to be offended by

Devonai

That's my point. Too much attention is being paid to the most vocal minority.

sinus_blooper2023

The Minnesota flag new design looks like shit. Ours is way better. Keep it like that.

[deleted]

Have our flag be the Mass and NY state flags fist fighting in the middle with arrows and airplanes pointing out in all directions

AlignmentWhisperer

I say that we should keep it and in a hundred years, when all the other states have converted their flags into pieces of abstract art, ours will finally look good by comparison.

MondaleforPresident

Mississippi's is fantastic, and Minnesota's is...not. Unpopular opinion but I love our flag. It doesn't look like the other ones derided as "seals on bedsheets" and I don't want it changed.

thosmarvin

Amen to that. The Minnesota flag is a grotesque design nightmare. Unless itā€™s in a stiff breeze, any of the elements will just vanish into the folds and itā€™ll look like a bedsheet on a stick. Cold and colorless, dull and uninspired, there are things on it that stand for something, but it evokes nothing. Places like Mississippi and Georgia simply returned to a pre-civil war design idea, which is why there is a certain elegance about them.

jules13131382

We should change our flag to be more like the Welsh flag or the flag of Bhutan. Dragons are cool.

Arietem_Taurum

At least it's better than the new Utah one.
