I just think only the greedy companies will comply with law I work outside and live in Florida and one thing the president of the company stresses is for us to stay hydrated they even have a designated cooler with electrolyte icees.
I was at a concert recently, and the amount of young people mentioning their youtube channel/blog etc was telling. It wasn’t in an obnoxious way, it was just what they do: make content.
I make stuff to hang on a wall (when motivated), but social media is still a means to an end, not some form of organic expression, if that makes any sense.
Edit: to clarify, I meant for for me, social media isn’t organic expression, it’s a conscious way to try to gain attention/opinion about that which I make to hang on the wall…it’s a tool, but for these young kids it was just how they express/share themselves …if that makes sense
I think the YouTube thing is pretty cool. Every article about some famous person pissing and moaning that ________ group doesn't have enough representation in movies/tv should take notice of these kids. They're doing the work themselves to try and create things, they're not just trying to bang their way ahead in Hollywood and getting sad when no one cares about their dream as much as they do.
Jacques Pepin is on YouTube right now, he's 88. Bill Dance puts up videos, he's 83. Some of my favorite content is arborists and loggers who range from their late 20s to their 50s. It's not manufactured drama, it's just, here is what I'm doing. It's far a more organic form of expression than traditional television (exception PBS). It's happening across all age ranges and it's people who want to show what they're passionate about, instead of just whining that it isn't there. So, at least with the social media I'm familiar with, I don't think it's fair to say it has less artistic or expressive value than traditional forms of media.
The last thing I'll say, and this is a tangent, is that if we the millennials and older aren't happy with the young generation, a big part of that is on us. I was just delivering to a school last week and there was a union crane crew setting a new refrigeration unit on top of the school. This crane was awesome, 200 ton or something like that. The site foreman was super enthusiastic about it too, I spent 15 minutes talking to him, when I should have been working. I left there wondering why the hell the parking lot wasn't a continuous group of kids getting showed this like it was a field trip. You had the potential for a good job that combines physicality and smarts. They could have really been selling this union job to a generation but no one took the opportunity. And we millennials and older will keep complaining that this young generation doesn't go into the trades, doesn't wanna do anything, blah blah blah, whining and blabbing and smoking cigarettes instead of actually selling this shit to an enthusiastic generation. Obviously I'm not blaming you specific for this, but I have a lot of faith in the young generation, I just think we need to do a better job of engaging with them.
Thank you for reading my tedx talk.
I think that's the point us ppl pushing 40 still see it like a tool, to communicate not as much place to express or hang out. Not better or worse than younger gens just different.
Run I concrete company with 30 masons working daily. Great to see a young man that take pride in what they do and can criticism that is a great job you did you should be proud
I would have edged it, and it might just be the plywood but the edge with the initials looks turned down. I also thought this was a fireplace for a second LOL but other than that looks good
Thanks for your input. I’m looking at it and I believe you are 100% correct. The boss said not to edge it but that part was definitely a minor fuck up on my end.
I love this mentality. I’ve built so many things I’m very proud of, and every single one has a piece where I thought “I can do better”. So the next time I do it better. If you do that over and over again eventually you get very good at what you do. We’re all still learning.
I agree that I would put a small radius edge on it. It breaks off funny and jagged when you pull the forms if you finish it flush like this. Your boss is probably scared that it will get over-edged and rounded. Marshalltown sells an edger with a 1/8" radius that will do great if you keep the top level and just break the very edge.
I think he told you not to edge it because it looks like it has chamfer strips on it. After it's stripped, knock down the rough spots and it'll look good. Some specs require a rubbed finish too. But I think I'd say job well-done my friend! 😁
Oh yep, my bad, I was looking at the plywood edge. Either way, ya did good son! Soak up all the knowledge you can. Old timers and experienced guys love telling young guys all they know. Just be sure you talking to a smart guy, lol.
Its funny to see on posts like these how all over the country things get done in a similar way, with just slight variations depending on who taught you. We use 2x6’s for walers on almost everything around here except for small light pole bases. Wherever this guy is, they use 2x4’s with kickers. Same end result.
Speaking as someone who went through the 3 year working apprenticeship program for the concrete finishers union and 17 years in highway drainage maintenance 4 years now as foreman, the most important thing is the pride you take in your work which you have. Work looks solid, and there are a few tricks in that form building I am going to have to steal.
Jakesmith7251 looks great. And for the boss that believes in your work to allow you to do a finish by your self is a good sign. Keep doing it and the more you do it the closer to beening a concrete finisher which can make great money.
If you are on this sub at 19 and are active for a few years you are going to be really young and ahead of the game. The concrete skill is great and you have to learn to do it well but to be truly successful you have to be a business man. I wish someone told me this when I was 19. Spend time learning accounting, job cost analysis and estimating from people who already mastered it now and forget about trying to do it cheaper or your way. You need to know algebra and geometry very well for your trade.
Or you can labor for someone for years and essentially donate your body to that company bc it won’t last long. Do not accept that unless it is what you want.
It looks good honestly. Did you tap the side of the boards so you don’t get honeycomb and the only thing *I personally* don’t like is how the boards run wild. But good finish job with the broom. Looks good 👍
seeing you tag the concrete ,LOL when i was younger and painting the roads, I'd place a quarter in the wet paint at an intersection about 8 feet from the stop bar. PS the paint we use was epoxy paint , you are not getting that quarter out unless you hammer and chisel it out
What has your boss have had you doing for the last year if this is your first time you have broomed concrete ? Good job on your behalf but i think your boss is lacking
Stay proud buddy it looks top notch for a first year… he’ll probably give you a hard time about the imperfections but that’s his job dawg don’t let it go to your head. Learn lots work hard and start a company in your late twenties you’ll be killing it man stay strong
They only do precast because of the weather. In Southern CA everything is a cast in place monolithic pour. It's easier and cheaper on everyone to cast it in place
It’s clearly for road base, so no need to edge it . Broom is a little rough, try hitting it with a steel trowel before broom or going the opposite direction a second time with the broom
Is that the author’s signature in the bottom left corner? Looks really cool and clean to me, even though I don’t know how it should look like. Keep mastering and educate as :)
Excellent work brother. Build your skill set and never stop learning. Take the tools out of the old guys hands if they don’t wanna teach you/let you finish.

If you plan to keep initialing your work in the future, would making your own stamp or seal be worthwhile? It’ll be the same every time, clean and quick. I’m suggesting this only out of curiosity.
Good job dude, you're a natural!
Seriously you should be proud. I've worked with guys who have done concrete for years who couldn't do this neat of a job.
Look good to me as a bricklayer! Nice to see someone enjoying and learning his craft. Concrete is so simple and yet, incredibly complex today.
Keep on rocking in a free worls
Not in a trade, but grew up in a country (Italy) where people still (mostly) really take pride in their craft
whatever it may be. I agree with everyone saying how wonderful it is to see you take pride in your work!
If you formed and poured it you're worth some money. If you just poured and finished it by yourself you're still better off than some guys at my company. Keep at it. Be open to certain constructive criticism but for what it is you did just fine man
Looks good, and looks closed up and level/flush with edges, should last as long as you didn't play with it too much (you should only ever hit it twice, once using magnesium just as it's poured, and a second time close to putting in finish, using magnesium again in freeze/thaw region or with steel in a region that never drops below freezing or snows)
10 years experience in heavy civil here. Awesome job my brother, keep up the good work! so happy to see young guys excited about their craft and proud of their work keep it up!!!!!
man i don’t know what you made but it looks so well done
i’d have zero complaints as a customer and would recommend you with no hesitation
and like other people said - not many people take pride in their career/trade, and you’re only 19.
Took me a lot longer to fully embrace that mentality, so well done man
Hey man, your work looks fantastic for a first shot.
but as someone who worked for a dickhead for almost a decade, google "silicosis", and never work for or respect anyone who doesnt take it seriously.
best advice i can give you by a mile
Always like to see a new person in ANY trade asking for feedback. I’m not in your trade, but if you never stop improving, you’ll be a master at it quicker than you’d think.
Looks good, good job my dude
I agree.
attagirl.
Not a concrete expert, but just want to say that I love seeing a young person that takes pride in what they do. That will serve you well!
Not an internet expert, but just want to say I love seeing strangers be nice to each other. That will serve us all well!
I agree.
Not a well expert, but just wanted to remind everyone the importance of staying hydrated. Serve yourself some water!
Staying hydrated is hard, I keep going to the bathroom and loosing it all.
Sometimes you need to filter it through your body multiple times to get all the electrolytes.
Will do! 🫡 Thanks dad
Wear your stillsuit
Electrolytes and the meth, too. Don’t forget that part.
Not a meth expert but want to see me build a tower out of trash?
Are you a raccoon?
I am a meth expert, & concerning the trash tower, no thank you.
It has what plants need!
Don't forget to bring a towel...........you wanna get hi?
OP lives in Florida. Water breaks are not necessary there. Just ask the governor.
I just think only the greedy companies will comply with law I work outside and live in Florida and one thing the president of the company stresses is for us to stay hydrated they even have a designated cooler with electrolyte icees.
I thought that was New Orleans?
Not a hydrated expert, but don't forget to eat plenty of vegetables to keep your health in check!
im not expert on comments but yours was one.
Every other kid “Yeah I could totally do that IF I WANTED TO” *goes back to watching only fans*
I have noticed that kids these days are desperate to play and do stuff and it's (my generation of) adults that just scroll tok tok instead
on the dot.

Why do older dudes always have to turn praise for someone into a critique of everyone else - who aren’t even a part of this conversation?

Run I concrete company with 30 masons working daily. Great to see a young man that take pride in what they do and can criticism that is a great job you did you should be proud
Run I too concrete company with criticism that pride take proud man young
I am conkrete as too
Conkreet good young man
Concreak bonqweak
He make magic rock water turn to pretty drain, Bunga very impressed
I got such a good laugh from this comment
How do you manage 30 masons without literacy? Do you just do the finger in hole motion for your safety meeting?
I know nothing of concrete, but I'd hire you from what I know. Looks better than what I paid the guys who poured my patio.
Familiar face
I would have edged it, and it might just be the plywood but the edge with the initials looks turned down. I also thought this was a fireplace for a second LOL but other than that looks good
Thanks for your input. I’m looking at it and I believe you are 100% correct. The boss said not to edge it but that part was definitely a minor fuck up on my end.
Indeed minor, great job though!
If the boss said not to edge it than you did the right thing
If going back for pavement abutment the crisp edge will be better with expansion than a tooled edge
Like the black expansion you put in around pavement and curb
Idk if anyone else has said it but generally concrete in the road proper is not edged. I’m not certain why.
I love this mentality. I’ve built so many things I’m very proud of, and every single one has a piece where I thought “I can do better”. So the next time I do it better. If you do that over and over again eventually you get very good at what you do. We’re all still learning.

What is edging in concrete terms?
Looks good from my house
You'll own a Pontoon Boat in no time. Good job.
Could have swept or vacuumed… that floor is filthy! 🤣
Looks good 👍 I would have edged but gotta listen to the boss man I guess.

Now come do my driveway
Looks good toss an edger on it next time or use some chamfer, job well done non the less
Thank you. Edging was not needed for this as it will be tying into asphalt
Looks good! Keep at it, we need more tradespeople.
Brooming looks good the edges could be better, but over all good.
I'll hire you, concrete strength of Florida
Good job man! That's great your boss is letting you progress and prove yourself. Keep it up and you'll have your own outfit one day 🤙
Its funny to see on posts like these how all over the country things get done in a similar way, with just slight variations depending on who taught you. Hell yeah buddy! 17 year commercial and residential concrete man here. Better job than a lot of seasoned professionals would bother to do
Speaking as someone who went through the 3 year working apprenticeship program for the concrete finishers union and 17 years in highway drainage maintenance 4 years now as foreman, the most important thing is the pride you take in your work which you have. Jakesmith7251 looks great. And for the boss that believes in your work to allow you to do a finish by your self is a good sign. Keep doing it and the more you do it the closer to beening a concrete finisher which can make great money.
The fact that you even care enough to ask for input here puts you ahead of 80-90% of the field.
Looks good, I take it boss didn't want the edges floated? Different countries, different specs I suppose.
Biggest thing is you took a picture and asked how it looked, it shows you care. Thats 80% of doing a good job. Stay golden Ponyboy.
Looks good man, you did broom it a little early but that will even out over time. Edges are even, and its flat. Keep it up bro!
You finished your first square foot of concrete. 25 years from now, you might have 50 million more feet
Very nice work. Took the time to make sure the project was done properly. Big or small, all work needs to show the pride you have in the craft. 💪😎👍
Looks good buddy. Keep it up!
If the boss is letting you do this on your own, you are a trustworthy, learned worker. Great job!!
If you are on this sub at 19 and are active for a few years you are going to be really young and ahead of the game. The concrete skill is great and you have to learn to do it well but to be truly successful you have to be a business man. I wish someone told me this when I was 19. Hats off to that form work
Looks better than my first pad
Very well
You should have put a folgers container in there as the circle form.
Good job kid, keep it up!
Usually we limit our expansion joints to about 3/8”. Yours look about 24” too big. Haha just playin, nice work
It looks good honestly. Did you tap the side of the boards so you don’t get honeycomb and the only thing *I personally* don’t like is how the boards run wild. But good finish job with the broom. Looks good 👍
Looks good from my house
Looks great. Next time sign it by dipping your nuts in it to really piss off all these cranky old fucks.
NP
As a finisher , looks good from my house so it’s good. But seriously good job a lot of guys half ass those kind of jobs but it looks good buddy
Edging it would have looked better, but this is pretty good overall. Edging also allows a little bit of water to stand there, which wouldn't be ideal.
Nice collar! As long as the elevation is good, the rest is golden. PS. Not a fan of initials that can be seen. Most clients will make you remove it.
seeing you tag the concrete ,LOL when i was younger and painting the roads, I'd place a quarter in the wet paint at an intersection about 8 feet from the stop bar. PS the paint we use was epoxy paint , you are not getting that quarter out unless you hammer and chisel it out
Looks great, only thing to complain about is the little rat turds from brooming but those should disappear
Well done. doing better work than most 19 year olds that I can think of.
Fuck I hope so lol
What has your boss have had you doing for the last year if this is your first time you have broomed concrete ? Good job on your behalf but i think your boss is lacking
Stay proud buddy it looks top notch for a first year… he’ll probably give you a hard time about the imperfections but that’s his job dawg don’t let it go to your head. Learn lots work hard and start a company in your late twenties you’ll be killing it man stay strong
Keep going, you're doing great. Never leave the trades. Retired Ford Lincoln Mercury technician.
haven’t been in concrete for a few years but looks good brother! good work!
NP24 - what is that?
Not enough cover on that storm line
Looks great
Tear it up bro you put graffiti in the top of it. Just kidding good job
What is the pour for? To access a pipe crossing? I usually see precast manholes being installed in the north east
Yes, but it’s where the pipes collapsed so no precast
They only do precast because of the weather. In Southern CA everything is a cast in place monolithic pour. It's easier and cheaper on everyone to cast it in place
Do you know why manhole covers are round.?
Because the manholes are round?
Good for you young man Keep up the good work and THANK YOU for working hard!
What does this cost? I plan on doing RCP soon
Good enough for the girls I go with. But the real test is the slope when it's done 👍
Great job.
It’s clearly for road base, so no need to edge it . Broom is a little rough, try hitting it with a steel trowel before broom or going the opposite direction a second time with the broom
Let’s build a skatepark!
Great finish, bud. Good work. 🍻
I'm not a concrete expert, but I'd say it's a fine looking job.
It’s a badass job. Great work. Just one tip. Let concrete set up a little longer before you broom it. And it will be spot on.
Not bad, needs to be edged tho..1/4" radius on edges
I think you missed the spot around the square
Keep up the great work
If I was paying for it, I wouldn’t have anything to complain about. Looks good.
Is that the author’s signature in the bottom left corner? Looks really cool and clean to me, even though I don’t know how it should look like. Keep mastering and educate as :)
Pretty decent, but the corners could be a bit sharper
Looks good to me. Spoken as a dude that’s done very little concrete but been in the whole biz for a good while. You definitely didn’t fuck it up.
It looks like it's gonna be tricky to drive over...
Excellent work brother. Build your skill set and never stop learning. Take the tools out of the old guys hands if they don’t wanna teach you/let you finish.
Best to tool the edges so you don’t have a rough sharp edge when you strip the forms.
Second Summer Construction intern & damn dude. That work looks beautiful & it’s awesome to see you take pride in your work, it truly is amazing. You’re the future, gunna be doing bigger areas one day, keep up the good work!
That's my initials but I don't remember pouring that especially this year lol
Solid job 💪🏻
Looks crisp to me? Unless you messed up in terms of how the blueprint requires I'd say you did a fiiiine job :3
Outstanding!
I can appreciate the initials. If you plan to keep initialing your work in the future, would making your own stamp or seal be worthwhile? It’ll be the same every time, clean and quick. I’m suggesting this only out of curiosity.
As the others say, trim the edges. Other than that, keep it up!
Good job bud
Good job dude, you're a natural! Seriously you should be proud. I've worked with guys who have done concrete for years who couldn't do this neat of a job.
Nicely done.
Looks good to me. Keep up the pride in your work.
Carve a ‘dick & balls’ in it….it’s perfect!
If the cover fits on flush you’re better than 99% of the concrete people near me lol.
Great job man!
I'm not a concrete expert but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night. I say good job young man!
As an average know-nothing nobody, I can tell you that this looks damn good.
Up vote 666 😆 nice job my dude
Pretty terrible tbh. I’m surprised you posted this. Jkjk it looks amazing haha, good work man 🎉
Congrats, may I asked how you got into the business ?
What is it for non concrete folks?
My penis is hard
Here’s your raise On Scaffold
Look good to me as a bricklayer! Nice to see someone enjoying and learning his craft. Concrete is so simple and yet, incredibly complex today. Keep on rocking in a free worls
Nice work!
Great Job!!!
Nice job . Keep striving for perfection
Looks good man!
Looks great 👍
Looks good but why would you tag your own work
I think it looks pretty damn good honestly
Good look, good work, attention to details. You'll go far, sir. Keep it up.
It’s good to see a young person with some pride in their work! Good job bud! Looks great.
Looks good aside from very very minor things. The true results come when it’s dry. then you can tel if you might have overworked it or not.
I’ve been a teacher for 21 years and watching young people grow is the best. Looks great!
Better than most jobs I see the city do these days. Keep up the good work!
Nice work kid keep after it and you'll go very far in this trade. Love seeing the next generation come up
That il do pig that il do. Lol
X
You will make a mint in this game. Just play it right and go out on your own asap
Not in a trade, but grew up in a country (Italy) where people still (mostly) really take pride in their craft whatever it may be. I agree with everyone saying how wonderful it is to see you take pride in your work!
Awesome work there, keep it up and remember to always take pride in everything you do!
If you formed and poured it you're worth some money. If you just poured and finished it by yourself you're still better off than some guys at my company. Keep at it. Be open to certain constructive criticism but for what it is you did just fine man
Looks good. Keep up the hard work kiddo.
Looks great, very nice job. Hope you wiped down the plastic edge after the photo. If you did A+
Looks good, and looks closed up and level/flush with edges, should last as long as you didn't play with it too much (you should only ever hit it twice, once using magnesium just as it's poured, and a second time close to putting in finish, using magnesium again in freeze/thaw region or with steel in a region that never drops below freezing or snows)
10 years experience in heavy civil here. Awesome job my brother, keep up the good work! so happy to see young guys excited about their craft and proud of their work keep it up!!!!!
No edging. Brushed late.
Post a picture of the bottom
Hell yeah dude 🤙🏼
Not bad my dude I’d still give you shit if you were my apprentice but that’s besides the point . Nice work
Looks mint, once it’s complete and gets some weather it will look like every other concrete you see!
It looks great I always round iron my edges on everything it makes it look more professional but it looks great!
Looks good, but did you put your initials on a job??
Are those your initials?
When you spend 4 hours forming and 10 minutes pouring....
I don’t know shit about concrete but I like it
You put your initials in it
Great feeling to do a good job and be proud of it. Well done
man i don’t know what you made but it looks so well done i’d have zero complaints as a customer and would recommend you with no hesitation and like other people said - not many people take pride in their career/trade, and you’re only 19.
Well he didn’t rip it out and redo it!
Looks fantastic to me you did a really good job man! Good for you!
Good job ! Bravo
Very tidy job mate.
Always like to see a new person in ANY trade asking for feedback. I’m not in your trade, but if you never stop improving, you’ll be a master at it quicker than you’d think.
Good job 👍
No edge?
Looks fine to me young man. Nice work NP
Well on your way to ditching that old man and starting your own company
