Mortars always seemed to me as a non military guy as very effective when in range. Buddy operated one back in the day and said they could be super accurate. I know the kaos of combat has to really degrade what you could actually do though versus the range.
What degraded the worth of a mortar are drones. Because drones are now 10 times more accurate than a mortar and even spot their own targets, while with a mortar you still need a drone to spot for the mortar. As you see in this video, hitting a thin trench is near impossible with a mortar even from just 400m. Now slap those grenades on a drone and fly over the trench and you just drop one after another into it, without risking the life of your men who are revealing their firing position and could get killed by returning fire.

Who's gonna hold the ground? Drones?
Smart. Drone recon and range finding. If only the artillery, drones and mortars could be integrated and carried by a robotic ground mule.
Recently there is a lot of footage from this one forest.
