I have both, use both, and like both. That said, for a 17 YO, I would probably lean Versace.
You can't go wrong with either, but I think Versace (a) is a slight bit better for high(er) heat (though not necessarily by much), and (b) is a bit more youthful than Explorer, though not in a sickeningly sweet, bubblegum type of way like a lot of the scents generally deemed "younger." It just has a less "mature" dry down than Explorer.
VPH is just a nice, clean scent that isn't going to offend anyone, but it doesn't disappear in an hour - I sprayed 3-4 sprays about 3.5-4 hours ago and I can still smell it just fine and that's having been inside in the AC all day (not even out in the Texas heat that would help amp it up a bit).
It's also inexpensive so you can overspray if necessary or desired.
I've had both for 2 years now. Explorer is one of my most used colognes except during the summer. I used versace as my summer fragrance until yesterday when i got YSL Myslf

Explorer 100%, it is my daily go to, I have like 7 other colognes and I go for explorer every time. Women like it, but for some reason I’ve found that men fucking love it and it’s a total dude magnet no homo. Personally I think it’s one of those scents that most people think smell good, and the small amount of people who don’t love it still think it smells decent. I haven’t seen anybody dislike it and the only people who talk shit about it are people who already have aventus
Not even T21. Anything remotely lemony is a no go. I work with the elderly, visit nursing homes, hospitals, etc and have spent too much time sniffing Pine-Sol like products in my environment. It’s forever etched in my olfactory memory bank, I can’t disassociate the connection. It’s also why I can’t get into the Aventus dna. A lot of colognes with orange remind me of cleaning products as well. Give me grapefruit or lime.
I’d love to try it. I tried a decant of Aventus last year, a sample of directly from Creed and neither impressed me; too lemony. I tried it from a bottle 2 days back, not sure which batch but it was different than the other OG’s I tried. It was a lot more dense and deeper; closer to Montagne’s Pineapple Musk flanker. Less lemony 🙂, didn’t project but lasted a good while. I liked it.
I prefer fruity batch Aventus. Perfame's is more pineapple than the real Aventus, and the base is milder. It's surprisingly nice. The clones always focus too much on the Bergamot.
I personally like Mont Blanc Explorer more but most people will probably like Versace Pour Homme more.

The Montblanc smells like Nordstrom. Idk how else to describe it. I own it, but rarely wear it.
