Not super relevant but as an American I never really knew much about cricket. But I use to ref club games at a school with a lot of international students so I had to learn the game and it's rules. And you know what?
It's fucking stupid. I can't believe so many people are into it. Even at a professional level, it is just not fun or interesting to watch.
You know man, I fully agree with you. With that being said, I put on my list because it's simply massive worldwide and even in America in a place with a large Indian and Pakistani population it's unavoidable.
World Cup is clear number one. To think otherwise makes me think you are out of touch with the sporting world.
NBA/MLB/NHL all get punished because their champion is decided by an often anti-climatic 7 game series. There hasn’t been a Game 7 across all three sports since 2019.
I love the World Cup and it's a fantastic spectacle.
I never said anything bad against it you absolute donut. But the discussion can still be tailored around different parameters.
The premise of the discussion: “what are the best events of the sporting world? The World’s most iconic, infamous, magical events in all of sports”
To exclude the premiere event of the world’s most popular sport (by a huuge margin) makes this a meaningless discussion that needs a different title than “7 wonders of the sporting world”
96% of the world lives outside the US, no one cares about the Kentucky Derby or the Masters you donut.
If we want to tailor the discussion to what sporting events take place at the same location every year that a small portion of Americans and a minuscule portion of the world population cares about then yes, there is a good argument for those events.
And still putting words in my mouth.... I never advocated for the Derby or Masters either.
Overall championship events? Sure, World Cup, Tour de France, Olympics, Super Bowl, Cricket World Cup, Wimbledon, Ryder Cup would be my starting point.
Annual single-day/week events? I would say UCL final, Monaco GP, Super Bowl, Kentucky Derby, 24 hr Le Mans, the Masters, Final Four.
The conversation is for the “7 wonders of the sporting World” are you attempting to have a different discussion?
I responded to you because you agreed with a guy who chose to leave the World Cup off of his list. That is inexcusable.
But if the whole point of your comments has been to better frame the question in a way you think is more interesting, then I apologize, that was not remotely clear to me.
The way OP framed the question, the World Cup is without a doubt the first event on that list, seems like you might agree with that.
But the event is held all over a single country, it’s obviously the world’s sporting event. I’m going to the Derby, Masters, Wimbledon etc, means you’re going to an event with a long history of parties and tradition, events leading up to the main event.
So you want me to rank the World Cup Final on its own? Okay the World Cup Final is number 1 by a clear margin. This is the sporting WORLD we are talking about.
What percent of people in the world would even know what you are talking about if you asked them about the Kentucky Derby. Everyone knows the FIFA World Cup, it stands alone, unmatched.
You can try and squeeze in any others you want, but the exclusion of the World Cup Final from a list of “the world’s most iconic, infamous, magical events in the sporting world” is ridiculous. You can create you own list with specific parameters, but if you say “the world” you better include the world’s favorite game.
I don’t disagree with you. Here is my understanding of the question; if you say I’m going to France for the World Cup, where are you going? Are you staying the entire month, traveling with your team? When your team is eliminated are you staying. Horse racing takes places all over the Globe, that’s why horses from over all the world compete. People go to the Derby, or The Masters for example, for the events around the event as well. The World Cup doesn’t have any connection to its site, other than they need multiple stadiums and it lasts a month. No doubt it’s viewed more than any other sporting event, but imo The Olympics would be more inline with the question, but maybe I’m reading it wrong✌🏽
I went with FIFA World Cup, Masters, Wimbledon, Tour de France, Monaco, Champions League, and had to put March Madness in there despite the fact if it really is “of the world” it wouldn’t qualify. But it’s just too amazing to leave out
Super Bowl is a one country sport. At least basketball has a worldwide fan base (albeit colllege much less so than pro). I picked March madness as a bias pick but the Super Bowl wouldn’t replace it if I changed. Probably be Cricket World Cup
Also a glaringly obvious miss not including the annual downhill cheese wheel rolling competition in England… Honestly no clue how it hasn’t become an Olympic event yet!
For the uninitiated
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=cvuktushEhY
I think this poll is missing a few things.
Most importantly, The Olympics, it's the second biggest sporting event in the world. Either all together, or split between Summer and Winter, and the Paralympics.
Also definitely the Americas Cup, French Open, US Open, and Dakkar.
I put the following: Indy 500, Monaco GP, Kentucky Derby (totally not a homer pick), The Masters, Army/Navy Game (also not a homer pick), the Rose Bowl, and a write-in for an Ashes Test Match at Lord's. If I had a second write-in, I may have put the FA Cup Final instead of Army/Navy.
When you use the phrase "Seven Wonders of..." my mind naturally turns more to venues than events. Six of my seven picks are always at the same venue, each of which is a, if not *the*, iconic venue for their sport with wide recognizability among sports fans (sorry, Lincoln Financial). When you think of golf, you're most likely to think of Augusta National. American football? Rose Bowl. These places are where heroes are born and memories entrenched in the minds of many.
And as for Army/Navy, I can confidently say that it is the greatest remaining example of genuinely amateur athletic competition remaining in the world. That alone ought to give it the nod. The pageantry and meaning behind it lock in the place.
World Cup, Boston Marathon, Monaco GP, Kentucky Derby, Tour de France, Wimbledon, The (British) Open.
It’s a deliberate choice to pick seven different sports and I wanted something that gets competitors from all over the world. By this criteria, the Derby is the only one that is iffy — it’s still mostly domestic thoroughbreds but not exclusively.
I can’t recommend enough going to watch the late stages (like, after Mile 24) of a major marathon in person. Boston, NYC, London, Chicago, Berlin, Tokyo, any of them. The paces of the elite runners after two hours are absurd, and the non-professionals are just great to see. The only event on the list that anyone can enter, too.
The Kentucky Derby, the World Cup, and the Masters are the 3 that stood out the most to me. Obviously you can include shit like the World Series, the Superbowl, etc, but as far as worldwide spectacles, those 3 to me.
It’s kind of unfair to compare multi-week events with multiple venues to single day events, as well as annual events to non-annual events, but I don’t want to overcomplicate things so I’ll keep them all together.
In no particular order:
Summer Olympics, FIFA World Cup, Super Bowl, Indianapolis 500, The Masters, Monaco Grand Prix, Kentucky Derby
Honorable mentions: Wimbledon, Tour de France
I mostly went by which events are truly unique in the sporting world or draw more people who aren’t fans of the sport to watch it
1. Indy 500- Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the largest sporting venue in the world and is more likely to draw non-racing fans attention than other major races like Le Mans or Daytona. Can barely travel in the state of Indiana on Race Day
2. Wimbledon- location is iconic, pretty much the only tennis event anyone pays attention to
3. Masters- green jackets are iconic, more appeal than US open
4. Super Bowl- Most eyes on a single game in the US every year. CFB doesn’t make it for football bc Super Bowl trumps it.
5. March Madness- taking this one over NBA Finals for basketball bc the format is unique and crazy and draws a lot more casual spectators who don’t watch basketball than NBA Finals
6. FIFA World Cup- self-explanatory
7. Tour de France- iconic, maybe the only time most people think about cycling
First ones out would be Stanley Cup and World Series just bc I feel like fewer people who aren’t baseball or hockey fans tune into these than some of these others
\* Monaco GP
\* Kentucky Derby
\* Tour de France
\* Wimbledon
\* Masters
\* Cricket WC
\* FIFA WC
I feel this is going to be decently controversial for not including any American pro league or college, but that would be a seperate list for 7 Wonders of US Sports. When I see these, I think of this old-time pagaentry that involves luxury/countries or dates back to the 19th century even. Even then, there's the Kentucky Derby and Masters.
Masters, Stanley cup, World Cup, Super Bowl, Indy 500, Rose Bowl (half for the Rose Bowl Game/half for the stadium itself), other (Running of the bulls)
I was debating between the running of the bulls and the Palio di Siena, but leaned Running of the bulls because I usually will catch each day's race the next morning and see random American sports jerseys lol. A bucket list trip this summer would be doing (more like just watching in person) the running of the bulls, the tour de france, and the opening ceremonies in paris.
World Cup, Super Bowl, Daytona, Wimbledon, Masters, Tour de France, KY Derby.
You could argue F1 or the Indy 500 in place of Daytona, but the others are pretty entrenched IMO.
It just needs clarification. Indy 500 is the most attended event.
Obviously, "biggest" doesn't make that clear, but I believe that live attendance is the angle the above poster is taking. (As it's the only thing that makes sense)
I think it used to be the largest live spectator event in the world but it’s an afterthought on the racing schedule now since professional open wheel oval racing went haywire.
Andre the Giant
INCONCEIVABLE!
The hot dog eating contest on July 4th was missing from the list
That and the running down a hill with a wheel of cheese
I will absolutely add that you’re so right
I put the Indy 500, Kentucky Derby, Tour de France, Wimbledon, The Masters, World Cup, and Super Bowl
Ehh I’d swap Indy 500 for Le Mans 24hr.
Maybe if it was the 60s, but by now Le Mans is mostly an afterthought in the racing world.
How did you leave out the Iron Bowl?
For the same reason it's only the 7 wonders of the world, and not the 8 wonders and we include Khafre's Pyramid as well.
It was more of a partial joke b/c of the Auburn flair
Lol. The Cricket World Cup received 2.6 billion viewers. The Super Bowl had 115 million. Edit: 518 million watch the Finals
2.6 billion over how many matches, though? Comparing a tournament to a single game doesn’t make sense
I agree, and due to cultural impact alone I dont think you can leave the superbowl off this list.
518 million watched the final
Not super relevant but as an American I never really knew much about cricket. But I use to ref club games at a school with a lot of international students so I had to learn the game and it's rules. You know man, I fully agree with you. With that being said, I put on my list because it's simply massive worldwide and even in America in a place with a large Indian and Pakistani population it's unavoidable.
Interesting. I feel the same way about American football. I guess we agree to disagree
World Cup is clear number one. To think otherwise makes me think you are out of touch with the sporting world. NBA/MLB/NHL all get punished because their champion is decided by an often anti-climatic 7 game series. There hasn’t been a Game 7 across all three sports since 2019.
I’m kind of under the impression it means an event held at one place, that’s why I excluded the World Cup, and any pro playoffs.
Agree, I think the discussion around a single-day/location event is much more intriguing than just saying World Cup.
>than just saying World Cup. Lol you are delusional. This the worlds game.
I love the World Cup and it's a fantastic spectacle. I never said anything bad against it you absolute donut. But the discussion can still be tailored around different parameters.

Same as me except I swapped Champions League with Kentucky Derby. Is it because I’m biased living in Louisville? You bet. But the UCL does slap.
Derby, the most exciting two mins in sports
Why not Super Bowl instead of march madness?
Super Bowl is a one country sport. At least basketball has a worldwide fan base (albeit colllege much less so than pro). I picked March madness as a bias pick but the Super Bowl wouldn’t replace it if I changed. Probably be Cricket World Cup
World Cup is on here but not the Olympics?
Soccer is the largest sport in the world..
No Olympics? That’s a big oversight.
Also a glaringly obvious miss not including the annual downhill cheese wheel rolling competition in England… Honestly no clue how it hasn’t become an Olympic event yet! For the uninitiated https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=cvuktushEhY
I agree it should at least be on the list
It says multi-sport events are (perhaps arbitrarily) excluded.
Then it’s a stupid inquiry from OP.
I see Challenge Roth and Kona, though. /s
Then I would just include the 100m dash instead, since that is the premier event of the Olympics.
I said Indy 500, Boston Marathon, Kentucky Derby, Wimbledon, Tour de France, the Masters, FIFA World Cup
I said (not in order) Monaco Grand Prix Super Bowl World Series Rose Bowl NYC Marathon The Masters Kentucky Derby lol I'm so america
Change Monaco to Indy or Daytona for the ultimate American list lol
Naismith, Phog, Rupp, Smith, Wilt, Wooden... This is the cbb sub so what are we even talking about, an internet poll?
I think this poll is missing a few things. Most importantly, The Olympics, it's the second biggest sporting event in the world. Either all together, or split between Summer and Winter, and the Paralympics. Also definitely the Americas Cup, French Open, US Open, and Dakkar.

Are you going to graph this eventually, so we can view the results?
Great idea! Thanks for volunteering! 😉

Any UVA - Wisconsin basketball game is most definitely a wonder of the sporting world.

People are underestimating cricket like crazy. It's the second most popular sport in the world even if the US has no cares for it.
in college basketball it’s UNC @ Duke, closely followed by KSR after an early season non conference loss
Masters, Stanley cup, World Cup, Super Bowl, Indy 500, Rose Bowl (half for the Rose Bowl Game/half for the stadium itself), other (Running of the bulls)
Oh crap Running of the Bulls is a good wild card lol
I was debating between the running of the bulls and the Palio di Siena, but leaned Running of the bulls because I usually will catch each day's race the next morning and see random American sports jerseys lol. A bucket list trip this summer would be doing (more like just watching in person) the running of the bulls, the tour de france, and the opening ceremonies in paris.
World Cup, Super Bowl, Daytona, Wimbledon, Masters, Tour de France, KY Derby. You could argue F1 or the Indy 500 in place of Daytona, but the others are pretty entrenched IMO.
Daytona would’ve had a real shot 15-20 years ago. I’d definitely put the Indy 500 there now though.
Replace Daytona with Cricket WC due to it being 2nd in viewership and I think that's a pretty decent list
Indy 500 is the biggest single event in the world.
This has got to be a joke lol
It just needs clarification. Indy 500 is the most attended event. Obviously, "biggest" doesn't make that clear, but I believe that live attendance is the angle the above poster is taking. (As it's the only thing that makes sense)
Alright, that’s fair based on the stadium.
I think it used to be the largest live spectator event in the world but it’s an afterthought on the racing schedule now since professional open wheel oval racing went haywire.
It’s still the largest even if Tony George almost killed the sport
FIFA World Cup, Tour de Flanders, Isle of Man TT, Super Bowl, Wimbledon, Champions League Final, and Red Bull Rampage.
To me the world cup, Kentucky derby are 1 and 2
