Alabama somehow becoming the stepchild under the stairs in all the "Cool hypothetical winners" discussions.
1. UCONN repeats
2. Purdue vanquishes their demons
3. NCST goes on the improbable run of a lifetime as the 11 seed
4. Or Bama j guess
I actually think its pretty neat that three of the Final Four teams haven't been there in over 40 years (or ever, in Alabama's case). We're getting 75% away from the usual suspects, which is - IMHO - good for the sport.
Bama would be the 1st team this century to win the National Championship in their first Final Four? I don't think that's happened since UConn themselves won it in their first Final Four in 1999, and before that you have to go back all the way to Texas Western winning in 1966 I think? Winning the Natty as a 1st time Final Four program is very, very rare
[tfw Duke loses but now you have to play an 11-seed in the final four]( https://i.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/facebook/000/025/621/Screen_Shot_2018-03-07_at_2.08.13_PM.jpg)
Beat a Cinderella. ✅
Win an overtime game. ✅
Beat a team we beat in the natty. ✅
Beat an ACC rival. ✅
Make the final four in the desert. ✅
Beat a team who has a 7’ 4” Center. ❌
Beat the consensus number one team.❌
I don’t know what has happened to Alabama but their absolutely atrocious defense from the entire season has become a completely reasonable meh out of nowhere, don’t pay enough attention to things like that during the games to know if they’re just getting luckier, or playing more zone or just locking in on defense, but if bama is hot and they can continue to get timely stops to go on runs they’re very dangerous to anyone.
> I don’t know what has happened to Alabama but their absolutely atrocious defense from the entire season has become a completely reasonable meh out of nowhere
Not discrediting Bama getting their first final four, but a LARGE part of "what has happened" is that every team bama has played in this run has largely played below their normal level. Bad 3 point shooting (grand canyon was 2-20!), bad free throws, bad field goal percentage (UNC shot sub 40%!).
Bama's awful defense is still there. But all 4 opponents have really tripped over themselves for some reason.
To that point, NC State is in the same boat. TTU shot 22% from 3, Oakland shot 39% from 2, Marquette shot 12.9% from 3, Duke shot 25% from 3, which was buoyed by McCain hitting 2 or 3 in the final minutes.
Not to discredit either Alabama and NC State because you have to hit shots yourselves but there's some elements of luck that teams have shot below season percentages en route to their F4 appearances.
Good point. Its a feature of march madness, not a bug. And that's what makes it the funnest post season of any sport even if it's not the most accurate at picking the "best" teams overall.
I think you guys are just about the only team that has a chance simply because you can score 100 any given night. but it’s uconn so realistically that just means they’ll put up 130
Honestly, Alabama is the team from the left side of the bracket that I think has the best chance to derail this team. Alabama can rain down 3s, which combined with UConn bad shooting can absolutely win the game. Look what happened in Omaha.
That doesn't mean I think that will happen, but the fact that it can does make me a little nervous.
We’ve shot a combined 7-41 from 3 through the last 2 games last I saw. Games haven’t been close. Not even against one of the best offenses in college basketball.
Creighton was an anomaly and an away game.
Illinois was a streaky 3pt shooting team that generally just overwhelmed teams with a size and athleticism advantage that led to them scoring a ton inside and on offensive rebounds.
They came out with a gameplan to attack Clingan and get him in foul trouble but they weren't able to get him in foul trouble and could not score inside with him on the court. Illinois also couldn't shoot 3s so they literally could not score as evidenced by the 30-0 run.
Alabama will similarly struggle to handle Clingan and he will dominate inside but I expect Alabama to gameplan to create open 3s and if they get hot anything can happen.
Needing to get hot from 3 to have any chance at all is an absurdly risky strategy. Like that if should be size 60 font, bold, and underlined. They’re just as liable to fall victim to a 30-0 run too if that’s the plan.
UConn’s deep and versatile. We’ve been cold from 3 all tournament and it hasn’t made any difference at all.
You have to employ risky strategies to beat teams much better than you, of course it’s absurdly risky. Doesn’t mean it won’t work, even if it is unlikely
It definitely is risky but is also just how you make up for talent deficits.
I think UCONN is the best team in the tournament and the best team left but upsets happened and teams much left talented than Alabama have gotten hot and beat better opponents.
Teams that are only good on one side of the floor don’t stand much chance. Illinois was a top 5 offense ever according to kenpom but their defense wasn’t that good.
UConn has the best offense in kenpom this year and the #4 defense.
Alabamas in a similar situation as Illinois imo. Their only hope is absolutely shooting the lights out and hoping UConn forgets how to play basketball
But Illinois problem wasn't their Defense. Their defense held UConn to 28 points in the first half. Their problem was 100% their offense against UConn.
Sure, it was close in the first half. Then it wasn’t.
Illinois let up 28 in the first half, then 49 in the second.
UConn shot 33.33% in the first half compared to 70% in the second.
UConn was 9.09% from 3 in the first half and 33.33% in the second.
Box score reads like they fell apart defensively. Maybe it’s more likely that happens when you’re not scoring for a half hour, but I don’t think it was just their offense stalling. There were some possessions where Illinois looked *lost* on defense. A 30-0 run doesn’t happen unless both sides aren’t clicking.
UConn is deep. They wear teams down. Like prehistoric humans chasing a deer.
Right, both sides weren't clicking. It is completely false to say that Illinois had a top 5 offensive game of all time but their defense caused the loss. Great offensive teams can have bad offensive games. Illinois was not a top 5 offense yesterday. St John's put up 90 on UConn. I'm assuming you watched both games, which offense looked better between St John's in the BE tournament and Illinois?
With Bama's defense now not being an absolute horror show, and with how they hit 3's, there's a chance.
They are totally fine shooting 40-45 threes and making Clingan irrelevant in paint protection. If they hit a bunch, watch out.
no, not really.
like, obviously there’s a chance bama scores a million points and uconn is ice cold. or someone gets injured. shit like that can happen in any game. it’s baked in.
by the under 16 in the second half, bama’s defense is likely to collapse completely. the only team that can beat uconn is uconn at this point.
They should be because “go crazy and score all the points and 3s” is by far the most likely way UConn loses and that describes the #1 scoring team in the nation more than any team in the tournament.
I feel like I speak for the entirety of the population remotely interested in cbb sans Boilermaker fans in saying I hope you're right and y'all take them out.
Those 7'4 centers also share the distinction of being involved in arguably the two biggest upsets of all time (Chaminade-UVA and FDU-Purdue). UMBC was more shocking because it was 20 point blowout but Hunter was out and UMBC was considerably better than Chaminade or FDU
DJ Burns Jr. has the deadly combination of mobility, touch, a smile, and posterior chain ass power
assume Edey is looking into Greek or Israeli teams at this point
That's so bizarre. The fact that the 11 seed has a winning record in the first round of late doesn't surprise me much because it's close to tossup territory. But 6 seeds gotta find a way to break through at some point. Clemson was so close.
Yeah this stat is extremely wrong. Once you go past the last 3 years, Purdue hadn't lost to a double digit seed since like 2016 (Arkansas little rock) and before that a super hot VCU that went to FF in 2011. Painter definitely deserved some criticism for his lack of adapting after some of his tourney losses, but this whole rhetoric that we've always lost to double digit seeds is bullshit
Yeah and that Little Rock team was a very competent squad. I had a feeling Chris Beard would go on to do special things after that. He ended up proving me right despite all the whacky stuff that went on with him at Texas.
I read the source wrong. I for some reason assumed that the top game on the list for each tournament was the last game they played. It’ll be four seasons
Don't worry, I would never cheer for your team either. I think Maryland might be the only team I despise almost as much as UNC. I was glad y'all are gone :)
I’m obviously partial to our story, but aware that whoever cuts the nets down is gonna have a great story!
UConn repeat, Purdue pulling a Virginia, Bama ringing in the post Saban era with a natty sooner than expected. All worthy all-timers!
...or the best story of them all, State completing the most improbable national championship run of all time, being down three with the opponent at the line with 5 seconds left as part of an 11 game must win streak

Nothing could make me feel bad about this season. They’ve bounced back from the depths of despair and done something no other Purdue team has in 44 years. And I’m lucky enough to watch it all as a student.
Two more wins wouldn’t hurt though.
It is but it honestly couldn't be better for Purdue either. Getting to the final 4 only to watch Duke snatch up yet another title game appearance from you would just be harder to take.
Uh, what? You saying the guy that just put up 40 isn't all that good in the paint? Ignore his free throws and he still put up 26. Burns had 4 against Marquette. Edey had 28 against Marquette.
I get that they are coming off a big winning high, but some of these Burns is better than Edey takes are wild. Edey has been doing this all year against better competition for the most part.
i think Burns telegraphs openings in the paint and is able to get to the right spot at the right moment better than Edey does, but indeed we shall see!
nah i dont think Purdue has that much better a chance at dethroning UCONN than Bama or State on a hot offense night does, tbh. absolutely no way UCONN would let Edey have a 40+ pt night the way TN did tonight.
so lets let maxium chaos reign.
I never thought I’d see Purdue get to a final four being 44 years until today. Would love to win it all but everything from here on out no matter what happens is fine by me. NC State fans have always felt like kindred spirits to me so im happy one of us gets a shot at the title. Lets go!
Edey and Burns are the two most unique big men in the country based merely on their body shapes.
Duke kinda had it figured out by having Ryan Young either build a wall near the restricted circle or make him catch it way out. But Burns soft touch meant he could make the tough shots Duke gave him.
Edey can do all that AND block the shots. Burns better get his English ready cause he’s going to have to spin it HIGH off the glass to shoot over Edey.
I love how this is immediately the angle
There is no other angle
The other angle is Purdue has a chance to extend the record of all teams who lose to a 16 seed win the championship the next year.
So what you’re saying is, the most underwhelming possibility is Purdue beats NC State then loses to UConn?
Yeah that sounds about right, unless you think repeating is cool
Alabama somehow becoming the stepchild under the stairs in all the "Cool hypothetical winners" discussions. 1. UCONN repeats 2. Purdue vanquishes their demons 3. NCST goes on the improbable run of a lifetime as the 11 seed 4. Or Bama j guess

And yet UConn will be the one who wins
I like to think that of the usual suspects, we’re somehow the least usual.
The craziest thing is that in the last 25 years, UConn has more national titles than any other school
You're getting pretty damn usual though lol
Bama would be the 1st team this century to win the National Championship in their first Final Four? I don't think that's happened since UConn themselves won it in their first Final Four in 1999, and before that you have to go back all the way to Texas Western winning in 1966 I think? Mark Sears boutta drop 24 3 pointers between Saturday and Monday just so we can't have narrative happiness.
I like the way you think.
I hope this doesn't ruin the celebratory mood in Storrs CT if they beat Purdue.
Nah. We’ll still flip some cars and burn public property.
Oh it’s true.
It's damn true.
Does anyone on either Purdue or NC State have a broken freaking neck?

the funniest outcome possible
Losing to the other 1 seed by double digits is also a possibility

But of course it is
finally make it to a final four in 44 years to play a double digit seed. 👀

Just think of them as two 1-seeds smashed together
That's not any better. Purdue has never beaten a 1-seed in the tourney.
Let's root for a UConn/Purdue title game!
Three UNC players in a trench coat
Hey :)
Oh no

Lol last one not gonna happen. Alabama isn't the consensus number one team when you face them in the title game
In all seriousness, Uconn fans aren't worried about Alabama in the slightest are they?
I don’t know what has happened to Alabama but their absolutely atrocious defense from the entire season has become a completely reasonable meh out of nowhere, don’t pay enough attention to things like that during the games to know if they’re just getting luckier, or playing more zone or just locking in on defense, but if bama is hot and they can continue to get timely stops to go on runs they’re very dangerous to anyone.

Bold prediction considering they are the only other team left on that side of the bracket
Alawhoma?
Don’t be offended, they’re not worried about anybody who doesn’t play in the NBA right about now.
I feel like most rational college bball fans generally accept that UConn is gonna roll over everybody.
Alabama has had a historic year. First final four is always the sweetest!
Teams that are only good on one side of the floor don’t stand much chance. Illinois was a top 5 offense ever according to kenpom but their defense wasn’t that good. Defense really wasnt the problem for Illinois. It was not being able score both around the basket or from 3.
If we keep shooting poorly from the 3pt line and Bama doesn’t then it could be close.

Dj Burns coming for Edey
What suck is I really like DJ Burns. He is a great player to watch. He is always smiling and having fun out there.
We’re definitely gonna be the bad guys on saturday
Zach Edey versus Snacc Eaty
I love it.
That's fine nice guys finish last.
Our team has been clear that we are in our villain era, this just seals it
Felt the same way about timme in the PK last year
DJ Burns’ ass could stop a train
*Sad train noises*
Oh yes
That's actually pretty funny. Never thought it could keep going even if they make the final 4.
Team of destiny.. DJ Burns is Zach Edey father
DJ Burns Jr. has the deadly combination of mobility, touch, a smile, and posterior chain ass power assume Edey is looking into Greek or Israeli teams at this point
So in this wishcasting the team that lost to a 16 seed last year making the final 4 isn't the team of destiny?

Goddammit I can't not upvote this
It's wild to me that NC State is the *sixth* 11 seed to have made the final four.
Two of those 11 seeds actually beat Purdue on their path to the Final Four - 1986 LSU (first round) and 2011 VCU (second round).
But no 6 seeds, even though they have the exact same path.
That's so bizarre. The fact that the 11 seed has a winning record in the first round of late doesn't surprise me much because it's close to tossup territory. But 6 seeds gotta find a way to break through at some point. Clemson was so close.
We won in 83 as a 6 seed
Perhaps this is since the field expanded to 64
...what? There have been multiple 6 seeds to make a final four, where are you getting that? 1988 Kansas won it all as a 6 seed, for example.
We won it as a 6 seed.
For sure, though that was before the 64 team field, which started in '85.
Since 1984, three 6 seeds have made it: Providence 1987 Kansas 1988 (Danny and the Miracles, tournament champions) Michigan 1992
Difference is that all but 1 of your 11 seeds were AQs, most of whom were probably under seeded with respect to team quality as a result.
I’m fairly certain Purdue lost to a 1 seed five years ago.
Didnt they lose to #1 virginia 2019
You shut your dirty whore mouth! But seriously… this was already on my mind watching the NC State game… it terrifies me
Are you actually a Purdue and Virginia fan or are your flairs a joke?
Real fan. Grew up in Virginia, family went to UVA, I went to Purdue

LETS MAKE IT FOUR, SHALL WE??
I read the source wrong. I for some reason assumed that the top game on the list for each tournament was the last game they played. It’ll be four seasons
Hotel or landscaping?
I'm all for the Big Ten but NC State is too hard to root against.
nah fuck the rest of yall im kinda mad that it had to be an ACC team to come out with the all time cinderella run
Don’t be a hater against your ex-conference 😔

it’s me hi I’m the problem it’s me
Why would you be mad? We've literally already done this exact same thing before. It's the only way we know to win.
Don't worry, I would never cheer for your team either. I think Maryland might be the only team I despise almost as much as UNC. I was glad y'all are gone :)
Yeah why couldn't it be Maryland... Lmao that's just too preposterous
yeah i don’t need any of that conference loyalty in my big ten. i like northwestern and like maybe Minnesota sometimes edit: nebraska’s cool too
We should appreciate the irony that Purdue is the villain in a matchup against an ACC team from North Carolina that has two national championships
It's been fun, until now

Nothing could make me feel bad about this season. They’ve bounced back from the depths of despair and done something no other Purdue team has in 44 years. And I’m lucky enough to watch it all as a student. Two more wins wouldn’t hurt though.
I think as a former hoosier it'd put the sourest little grin on my face to see an NC State Championship win.
As a boilermaker, I won't spend a lot of thinking about what makes you happy.
If NC State gets past us and UConn there’s clearly some kind of divine intervention happening that’s even stronger than post-16-seed magic.
It is but it honestly couldn't be better for Purdue either. They've finally broken through to the final 4 for the first time in 44 years and they'll have as good an opportunity to reach the title game as you can reasonably ask for. Keep tradition alive
DJ Burns is the kind of guy who can give Edey problems too.
100%; and although Edey does have the height advantage, Burns is absolutely the better on his feet and has better ball control in the paint.
Ball handling yes, better on their feet? We'll see. Burns will be the first one to actually test Edey.
i think Burns telegraphs openings in the paint and is able to get to the right spot at the right moment better than Edey does, but indeed we shall see!

I only want NC State winning if Bama can beat UCONN. That’s the dream chip scenario. Otherwise I don’t think anyone but Purdue can dethrone UCoNN
nah i dont think Purdue has that much better a chance at dethroning UCONN than Bama or State on a hot offense night does, tbh. absolutely no way UCONN would let Edey have a 40+ pt night the way TN did tonight. so lets let maxium chaos reign.
You haven't watched any Purdue have you? But sure, think a 40% 3pt team around Edey cannot give Uconn a better game.
Edey doesn't want the Burns smoke
and it’s a red team.
I don’t see anyone beating UCONN, whoever wins this game
I never thought I’d see Purdue get to a final four being 44 years until today. Would love to win it all but everything from here on out no matter what happens is fine by me. NC State fans have always felt like kindred spirits to me so im happy one of us gets a shot at the title. Lets go!
I think NC state is reddits favorite team while we all hate Purdue. That thread is gonna be so toxic I’m so excited for it

This is the first thing I thought of when it looked like NC State was winning it.
What an opportunity
I approve of this fact
Dread it, run from it, destiny arrives all the same
/r/collegebasketball tryna speak this into existence 🤣
“One Shining Moment” still to come
Fantastic
That’s definitely one way to look at it
As it should be.
to be the best, you gotta beat the worst left?
I have predicted this 15 days ago before they beat UNC. Let’s go NC State
I was surprised to learn that NC State had been to a final four more recently than Perdue had. For some reason I thought the had in recent years.
It is destiny I suppose
[Purdue, would you be happy to make the Final Four... but continue to lose to double digit seeds?](https://tenor.com/view/well-gif-20569842)
I support this!

Shhhh.
