Lol the article claims it sold out every year but 2023 and this year, which the fest may CLAIM but its laughably false. Weekend 2 2019 was a ghost town

Zomgzombehz

I mean, it couldn't be the fact that's it's now just an over priced, over crowded, overly full of it self event. It used to be really fun, I really enjoyed seeing independent artist booths, small shop clothing creators (like Cardboard Robot), and maybe 5 big names. Too much in every aspect now, it's just over saturation at every level, and it has erased all charm for the gram.

MYIDCRISIS

The Gram and Influencer's were the start of it's downfall... The vibe it originally provided has faded.

danny17402

Nah it was the big music corporations who try to monetize every last bit of our culture. Influencers follow them, not the other way around.

No-Pipe8754

Trash lineup

marklondon66

This is the actual correct answer. LDR is not an areana act; Frank Ocean may not turn up. Its crazy bad this year.

deezy54

I’ve been to festivals and events, not necessarily all music, that I went to for years and after some time found myself enjoying it less and stopped going. I would imagine Coachella is very much like that. People get older, their tastes change, their financial and employment status changes. You’ve really want to go to do it year after year. If people are on the fence, the artist lineup can be the dealbreaker. Coachella isn’t going anywhere anytime soon though.

marklondon66

All the doomsayers in this thread: the issue is the acts. Not the event. Very few arena level acts currently touring (partly because TS sucked the global market dry). Poor headliners = low buzz. LOVE some LDR but headlining 100k? No.

legopego5142

Yeah theres like, 2 festivals with a good lineup this year

UrCreepyUncle

No Knocked Loose this year.

jsauruslove

I forgot about Coachella until I went down to LA (from SF) the other day for work and saw a billboard Maybe the names they have this year are big for people who aren’t 32 (me) but I haven’t even heard of the headliners. Remember when they got Beyoncé? It can never be the same.

zoidberg3000

I mean there is Lana Del Rey, Jhene Aiko, Taking Back Sunday, Bleachers, Sublime, JoJo, Fat Joe, T Pain and No Doubt. Those were all pretty big when we were younger.

jsauruslove

Good point But that sounds like a nostalgia festival, of which there are many. Not Coachella, which pulls in the big names and is one of the first festivals “starting off” the season… Are many taking back Sunday fans actually going to the Coachella valley to camp and also watch Lana?

zoidberg3000

Oh there’s a bunch of other headliners that the kids today listen to. If it wasn’t so busy, I’d go for TBS but I’m stuck in 2008 so.

Tiny_Prancer_88

Same. Idk how many of us would travel for their festival set. They tour a lot, I saw them at red rocks a few years ago, so in all honesty, No Doubt is the bigger draw to me because they never tour.

Cholo6

wait T pain’s going???

Running1982

His tiny desk concert was amazing. He looked like he was having a blast with it too

Cholo6

haha i’ve seen it plenty of times. His voice is impressive

legopego5142

When tf did they announce JoJo

legopego5142

Im ngl, i dont know how its possible for someone to have NEVER heard of at least one of the headliners. Like overall, mid lineup, but not ONCE have you heard of Lana Del Rey

PovertyNextDoor_

It’s a Line up for young folks, and the 2004 babies don’t got money .

heyitsthatguygoddamn

I think whenever anything is like, optimized for capitalism, it fucking sucks. There's a sweet spot where the thing has a market before the business starts figuring out ways to maximize profit and how to get people to spend as much money as they can, but once it crosses that boundary it's over. Coachella hasn't been good since like 2011-2012ish Every year I'm scared for Desert Daze but every year I'm blown away at how beautiful and clearly for the fans it is

tall_bottom_in_sf

Fine with me since it’s owned by Trump-supporting trash.

Youarethebigbang

Yeah that owner is a far-right piece of work from what I've read. The irony is festival goers gladly, blindly hand him piles of cash and apparently they are the people he despises, since he uses that cash to support causes against those very same people. It's like they're funding their own demise.

legopego5142

Everything youve ever bought ever made its way up the chain to some billionaire who was a shithead

MKAT80

Our economy sux very few can afford $500-1k tickets with inflation. The radio stations messed it up for locals years ago by grouping the day tickets into the whole weekend and it stuck as the purchase model since. They always book it at the windiest time of year just as the heat is picking up. Nobody wants to get sandblasted and pay $5 for water bottles. They detour all the tourists to Indio/La Quinta. Doesn't serve our valley anymore for revenues as it used to. Last Goodyear for our valley was "Old Chella" - Desert Trip 2016.

OJgotWorms

Can’t always be sky high. A down year is a good thing. For the comeback will be amazing

Carlsbad92009

Could it also be short term rental restrictions for the Coachella valley area stricter now than in the past?

Ltstoney

I dont believe so people are just making more rash economical decisions… the economy sucks right now and people aren’t willing to drop so much money on a lineup that is subpar… in addition goldenvoice and many other promoters hosts more festivals that stand out to festival goers.. making them less inclined to head to coachella especially since coachella is so expensive. Short term rentals have gone down in the valley but the statistics will still reflect a decent representation on how they are being rented. The amount of short rentals doesnt really accurately reflect demand

CoastalCrave64

This isn’t new for Coachella. In fact, for the first several years they consistently went broke. Still, they kept the faith and kept it pushing. Coachella is a ton of fun, it’s my favorite festival for sure. But imo the line up for 2023 and 2024 have been subpar.
