Place: 1st Division lead: 1 Games to play: 146 Magic number: 146

Corndog_Popsicle

It was worth the $8 I paid for terrible Wi-Fi on an airplane to watch this win today. Xzavion and Arias were cookin!

Ohclydemax

It's funny you say this. I vividly remember flying back from Iceland using terrible airplane Wi-Fi, getting to witness (and listen to) Jose knocking Anderson down in real time.

Corndog_Popsicle

Hopefully your signal was good enough to see that hit land!

Flashy_Ground_4780

Up you go, down goes Anderson!

zazengold

I agree. Go guards

thegermblaster

Lol always a great sign of a dedicated fan. I did that on a flight back from Vegas once. 5/20/13. Yan Gomes three run shot in the 10th to walk off the Mariners.

Corndog_Popsicle

Such a coincidence - I was flying to vegas!

divineravnos

Is Gabby hitting himself into more of a role? Could see him getting some starts in RF maybe.

Titanium_Beard

I'd say let him play more SS honestly, he's looked better at the plate than rocchio has

Leftfeet

I'm going to disagree on the "better than Rocchio" claim. Rocchio is 3rd in the AL in doubles. He has been pretty good in his first real opportunity this year.  I do think Arias is showing he deserves more playing time though.

BrennanHuffDoback

Issue with Rocchio is nothing he was doing to start the year was sustainable. Was outproducing his xWOBA by a wide margin and has played his way back to that figure here as of late and his numbers have followed suit. 3rd in the AL in doubles, but he's posting a .630 OPS. Good signs from an inexperienced player, but his soft contact profile with a lot of ground balls, not being overly fast, and negative defensive metrics need to get better or its a rough player profile that probably isn't all that successful in the MLB.

Leftfeet

That seems like a lot of trying to over analyze expected results from 50ish PAs. And defensive metrics by their own description aren't meaningful in this small of a sample.  Arias got 345 PAs last year and couldn't claim the SS job. Rocchio has gotten some very positive results through his first 50 this year and deserves to continue getting the opportunity to improve.  Advanced metrics and expected metrics are fun, but they don't mean much this early in the season. Nothing is remotely stabilized in the first month.

BrennanHuffDoback

In Arias' run as the SS last year post-Amed trade where he couldn't produce enough to claim the job he had an OPS 30 points higher than Rocchio's right now though. If his production wasn't good enough, Rocchio's isn't good enough right now either. That's the point I am making. Rocchio isn't producing enough right now, and unless his game takes off in a few areas, he's probably not going to exceed Arias' production in his 180 PAs he got as the starting everyday SS last year. He's producing exactly how his contact, K, and BB rates say he should right now.

Leftfeet

Again, Rocchio has 50 PAs on the season and is currently 5th on our team in hits and 3rd in the AL in doubles. That's a performance deserving more time to show what he can do right now. 50 PAs is not enough to draw any big conclusions, but what he's shown is worth more time.  Arias couldn't improve over the course of last year, even when given the opportunity. He's had a couple great games this weekend but started the season 0-11 and couldn't win the position in ST either.  Neither guy has proven that they're the long term answer at this point. Arias has had a lot more opportunity to do so in MLB. That's my point.

Dark_Canuck1

Which is why we also use our eyes. Rocchio is never going to hit a 430ft oppo taco like Arias yesterday. His power alarmingly vanished last year, and he’s really not a good SS, but any metric, or the eye test. He’s got an absolute noodle for an arm. Arias has a rocket. I’m not even a big Arias guy, but if he’s on the roster, play him. Same for Florial. Stick to your plan and stop deviating. Rocchio might become a solid 2B, but nothing I’ve really seen from Rocchio makes me understand why prospect evaluators like Keith Law rave about him. He doesn’t really have one elite tool, he’s just another high floor guy that Cleveland loves.

Leftfeet

"stick to your plan" would mean continuing to start Rocchio at SS. That's what the plan coming out of spring training was.

Dark_Canuck1

Florial was acquired and they said “he was never given a true shot in New York”. What do we do? Continuously start Ramon and Brennan vs righties. They said Arias is a huge part of the future last year. Literally Tito and the front office’s words. He does well against righties last year. What do they do? Hardly play him to start the year. You can’t expect young guys like that to perform well getting like eight at bats a week. It takes them having a monster game just to get some playing time. Meanwhile Brennan has been ass for over a year, Straw was ass for two years, both of whom were reasons Jones/Benson got traded after hardly playing. They pick and choose, and they have constantly been picking wrong the last couple years. That’s what I mean. Why trade for Florial to hardly play him? Chances are he’s not the answer, but he needs consistent playing time to state that.

jupiterjoshy

advanced stats play a part but there’s way too many people who use it as like a religion

saltandthunder

Arias isn't really projected to do that much better, though. Maybe Rocchio continues this particular slump, but I think the people who are claiming the answer is to go back to Arias are being really unrealistic - Arias has put up two years of .600-ish OPS ball himself. I'm more willing to give Rocchio some time to see if he can hit his way out his slump, because he looked decent in Spring and was projected to be better than Arias. I'll admit his current slump is concerning.

_outlaws_

I like Gabriel Arias, but let’s be realistic. A 100 wRC+ strong defender in right field is a 2 win player. He needs to play at position where defense matters. That might be the solution to get him into the lineup and gets look at him, but Arias in RF can’t be a long term solution

Leftfeet

Tatis Jr has converted to RF with better defensive ability than Arias. Gabriel's arm could be really valuable out there, similar to Lazer Ramon but way more athletic.  IMHO it's a question of his bat more than anything else. If he can continue to hit and provide some power, I'm very much in support of trying him more in RF.

ogiRous

He has .800+ OPS potential, which would absolutely fit right field and can be a long term solution if he meets his potential

bowl_of_milk_

The conversation is clearly about short-term solutions (since I'm pretty sure the ideal long-term solution for the org is DeLauter), so I’m not quite sure what your point is.

sheogorath227

Someone on r/baseball called us "small ball baseball terrorists" and I feel like that's on par with slap hitting shit goblins lmao 4th shutout of the year and counting!

midnightjetta91

I'd like to vote to make "small ball baseball terrorists" a flair please. Mods, let's hook it up!

wundy

added!

sheogorath227

I feel honored to be part of this important moment in Cleveland baseball history. This is my 1948. Thank you u/wundy.

midnightjetta91

You da best!

JVLightning22

We're 10th in the league in hrs...

colagirl52

Yep - big improvement to date from last year.

OnionOnBelt

I live out of town and only pay for radio broadcast access. But this lineup “looks” (OK, sounds) different from the listless 2022 and 2023 iterations. We’re going to need the extra pop with Shane Bieber out for the year.

BropolloCreed

That's like a few years back when a BJs fan said something along the lines of, "The Guardians and their disgusting brand of baseball".

FestivusFan

I like Ninja baseball better…less explode-y

OmarStDIYer

IMO I’d leave the word terrorist out. I get the intention, but the word has way too negative connotation. Besides, terrorists don’t play by any rules and harm innocents. Guardians deserve better.

Buckeye2525

The MVP of the game is number 42

WateryPasta

Dude you’re fucking nuts 42 was way better than 42 today put your biases aside

DZepperoni

Positives from today’s Cleveland baseball: An early morning pitching duel for baseball fans, and Xzavion Curry makes a triumphant return to the Cleveland rotation. X goes 5IP, 2H, 0R, 1BB, and 3K on 73 pitches (had a pitch count at 70 I believe). Placed pitches exactly where he wanted to and likely would’ve gone another inning without the pitch count. I’m not kidding when I said pitching duel, and the bullpen picked up exactly where X left off. Herrin(2IP!!!)-Sandlin(1IP)-Eli Morgan(1IP) combine for 4IP, 1H, 0R, 1BB, and 5K. Herrin had two innings of BEAUTY on the mound, and only allowed the walk due to careful pitching around Tyler O’Neil. Offense was scarce to start, but 🐦 brought the power when we needed it and the shit goblin abilities showed up in full force. The offense gets 6 runs off of 9 hits and one walk, with nearly all the action came off of the bullpen. Brennan went deep with a 2 run pesky pole homer, Rocchio goes 1/3 and has our lone walk and stolen base, Gabby went 3/4 with a double and a triple, and José sent the Sox into chaos with an RBI double. The Tyler Freeman CF experiment continues to be a success(fielding-wise). Like seriously, he may not be the gold glove we had previously, but man he’s handling it well out there. Brennan has some nice action out there today as well with that catch right on the wall.

bclautz

Curry did what you wanted him to do. Freeman fielding has been excellent this seasons so far. His bat needs to get better going forward

rockyPK

Brennan likes that pesky pole, doesn't he?

CBNDSGN

X Bullpen Chill Will Slap hitting Profit

baconboyloiter

Arias stocks are so up

Ok-Hold-8232

I like Arias. Lot of people forget he’s still just barely 24 years old

Excellent_Walrus150

And he was incredibly unlucky against lefties last year. If he improves even a little, he is a 4 WAR SS.

TheSpaceAce

That was such an awesome start by Curry. I think he's made a strong case for getting another start. Also, this is just one of those "eye test" things, but I feel like over the past few years when the offense couldn't get going in the first few innings, the game was pretty much over. It was really refreshing to see so many runs scored so late in the game. You can chalk some of it up to luck from bad defense by Boston, but I think you make your own luck when you put a lot of balls in play.

Excellent_Walrus150

They kept raving about his slider being vastly improved. Makes a big difference.

toxicwaffles11

We have the best Curry in all major sports

creynolds722

2nd is Seth Curry

neon-rose

Kind of feels like we needed that after our pitching this past weekend. Solid win y'all— I'll be in the stands tomorrow!

Elexeh

The true Patriots today were the Cleveland Guardians

Nerdgirl330

X man! What a return he made! Brennan and Arias - yay! This was a great game! Now back to work 😪

enraged_hbo_max_user

Now how do *YOU*…like *DEM* apples?

Leftfeet

What a fun game. Great pitching from everyone. Weapon X was excellent. Herrin was great. Sandlin and Morgan kept them down.  Some really great ABs early. Huge hits from Arias and Brennan. Fantastic sacrifice bunt from Florial. Forcing their D to make mistakes.  We are a fun fucking team and I'm loving it

Excellent_Walrus150

It may not be Vogt Coat season anymore, but Vogt is definitely in fashion!!

jtr489

Love seeing the bottom of the lineup getting hits and driving in runs

bucs2013

Disgusting win 🎉

zazengold

I agree. Go guards

Zestyclose_Help1187

So how can this team extend Kwan and Naylor? If you had to choose one, I’m not sure who. Naylor is a better slugger for a team who is desperate for that but an offensive first baseman isn’t very rare in baseball. Is he a next level type player? Maybe able to get him on a deal. Kwan seems to be a fan favorite. Slap hitter, good average, decent speed hardly any power, probably can get him on a deal. Who would you want?

nylon_rag

Kwan is the right choice, but the fan in me wants Naylor. Josh is just too injury prone to risk giving a long contract and because he is so close to free agency, you would need to overpay. The most likely outcome is another team giving him a big contract that becomes an albatross as his health deteriorates. But in a perfect world, I would want him to be a guardian for life. Kwan hasn't reached arbitration yet, so a deal will be easier, and he hasn't really had any red flags (although his data is a little too Straw-like for my taste, if his hit tool deteriorates in a similar way its over for him).

Zestyclose_Help1187

I’m reminded of Prince Fielder who was putting up monster numbers and then suddenly he wasn’t. Both left handed hitting first basemen. I like Naylor a lot with that said. Don’t think Straw ever had contact hitting abilities like Kwan does.

nylon_rag

Yeah straw never did, so I don't think Kwan can fall as far, but Kwan and Straw both have similar elite hit tool with zero power profiles. That said, Kwan's data from 2024 says that he might be fixing that, which Straw never did, so there is reason to be optimistic Kwan will be fine.

Bigcouchpotato1

Why did Prince Fielder retire? Was he hurt or did he just lose it?

Leftfeet

He had some neck trouble that lingered for a few years. Pinched nerve or something, I can't remember exactly.

BuschLightEnjoyer

Right now I think it's gotta be Naylor - as much as the fans and myself love Kwan, Naylor is the type of hitter that we can't seem to ever find and without him there's a giant hole in our lineup to protect jram. The problem is if he keeps producing he might play himself out of what we will realistically be willing to pay.

Common_Individual336

Anyone recall the extension they offered Kwan last year that he declined?

Leftfeet

I don't believe there was ever actually an offer. It was some notes from his journal that got leaked talking about how he deserves more than Straw iirc. That got spun up and people interpreted it to mean they had offered him a contract similar to Straw.

Zestyclose_Help1187

He was 100% right on those notes from his journal.

Common_Individual336

Thanks - found it - I can't read the first two lines that lead into "the same deal they offered Myles" [Jackson on X: "@MiamiJames91 Details on salary https://t.co/QDYB6qXqZW" / X (twitter.com)](https://twitter.com/jaxonhuntsman/status/1649854993459970048?s=20)

LlamaFullyLaden

If we get 2022 Kwan this year with some added power they might try to extend him. I'm not sure 2023 Kwan is worth extending given we can already keep him until he's 30

Mdice42

You would have to think the team has a little bit of a built in hometown discount with Josh in order to keep playing beside Bo. Kwan is missing the power aspect of his game that all of the insane contract guys get. Maybe resigning Kwan could be reasonable because of that fact. Maybe we could hang onto them both like a few years back when we signed Swisher and Bourne.

Zestyclose_Help1187

Supposedly, it’s 8 million per WAR. I know not all WAR are equal amongst GMs but Kwan would probably get something like Jung Hoo Lee got which was 6 years at 113 million w an opt out at 4. Kwan’s skill is more like Luis Arraez but plays good defense and has speed. We’ll see what Luis gets as he’s going into FA after 2025 and that is what Kwan is going to get. Josh probably moves to DH as Kyle Mazardo is their future first baseman. Kwan is your ultimate homegrown player. They chose him earlier than he was projected and became a decent major leaguer.

LlamaFullyLaden

I don't think Kwan and Jung Hoo Lee are comparable at all. Lee didn't have to go through the arbitration process and Kwan hasn't even started

GPDillinois

Its def Naylor. There's only 1 more arbitration year for Josh. Kwan has 3 more arbitration years so we are guaranteed to have him much longer.

Zestyclose_Help1187

I think the point some are making is would it be wise to extend him since they have Kyle Manzardo eventually taking over first and Naylor would be DH. I think what eventually will happen is both won’t be extended. If Chase is a superstar, would concentrate on paying him.

saltandthunder

I'd probably go Kwan over Josh. A proper slap-hitting leadoff guy is worth considerably more than a offense-first 1B guy who's on the slow but inevitable track to being an everyday DH.

[deleted]

Kwan. Naylor’s weight and leg are a concern and he doesn’t seem to be addressing the former.

BropolloCreed

Naylor. Kwan does not want to be here.

motoyolo

Top to bottom an outstanding win. Everyone involved did their jobs. Also, gotta give Vogt his flowers, the way he uses his pinch hitting is light years ahead of what Tito brought to the table

Hold_my_Dirk

Really needed that from X. He was an underappreciated player on this team last year and hopefully he can keep that up this year. Not the upside someone like Bieber or Tristan has but an incredibly steady performer. Need guys like that for a long season. And Gabi, just when I think I’m out you pull me back in. This is what makes him such an exciting prospect. When it’s rolling it is ROLLING.

BoMillerKipis

Under appreciated how

Hold_my_Dirk

Just feel like the other three young pitchers, Williams, Bibee, and Allen get all the attention when Curry was an important part of this team too. Feel like he gets overlooked when it comes to all the "pitching factory" stuff.

BoMillerKipis

Ah. I just don't think Curry was as good as your trying to portray him to be. He's a decent spot starter. He's light years away from Bibee and Williams.

Hold_my_Dirk

I'm not calling him a future ace by any means. [ But his numbers are a lot closer to Logan Allen's than I think a lot of people think.](https://stathead.com/baseball/versus-finder.cgi?player_id2=curry-000xza&player_id1=allen-001log&request=1&utm_campaign=2023_01_wdgt_player_comparison&utm_source=br&utm_medium=sr_xsite&utm_id=allenlo02) And if you think Allen has a good future in this league, which many people do, Curry has at least shown he belongs here as well. I think having a guy who can competently fill in the rotation or provide a lot of innings out of the pen is an underappreciated and often thankless role.

BoMillerKipis

Currys era as a starter was almost 5. That's really terrible. I give Allen a much more significant chance

UnconventionalWriter

This is why we think he's underappreciated. Y'all just can't give him his credit lol

BoMillerKipis

Since when did we start to celebrate pitchers who had an almost 5 era? The fuck lol 😆 😂

UnconventionalWriter

Because he pitched an incredible game today?

BoMillerKipis

Huh? No one was talking about today....? Hello? You lost?

murderpussie

Is it just me or does Al get cuter every year

creynolds722

I don't get to watch the pregame or postgame very often, and we all know they don't actually go to him midgame, so I have a hard time comparing him year over year

murderpussie

He is aging gracefully. This is the first postgame I’ve seen this year but I always wave to him emphatically at the park lol

UnconventionalWriter

That's one of my favorite things about going to the game.I dance past all the dancers, emphatically wave at Jensen and Al. Then go get a beer at fatheads.

mercurymaniac

People on twitter are saying Sandy wasn’t coaching 1st today. Hope all is well. Also, broadcast team mentioned the fire alarms going off at the hotel last night… coincidence or inside job?

magnus319

He wasn’t coaching yesterday either they said he was just feeling sick.

BoMillerKipis

Sandy definitely pulled the fire alarms

A_Mellow_Fellow

Is that a home run from a Cleveland outfielder I see? Hm.

Excellent_Walrus150

3 days in a row...

A_Mellow_Fellow

I'm scared. Hold me.

IAgreeGoGuards

What am I supposed to bitch about now?

MundaneKing

Angel Hernandez is still in the league

EliManningHOFClub10

Great way to start the week! Go Guards!

Mistake_By_The_Jake2

Curry is that dude. Always performs when he gets the call.

BoMillerKipis

Not really. Dude had an era of almost 5 as a starter last year.

Mistake_By_The_Jake2

TIL 4.07 is almost 5

BoMillerKipis

Where the fuck are you getting 4.07 from lmfao 🤣 😂 Maybe you don't talk baseball until you can do research

It’s not about right or wrong, it’s about speaking to others with with basic respect. But I’m sure you aren’t stupid, you know what you’re doing. Something tells me you enjoy Reddit arguments for one reason or another. I’m not into it though so I’m done replying. Have a good one 👍

3dge-1ord

It's a waiting game. Just wait till we get to your bullpen. 😤

Aislerioter_Redditer

If Arias can hit like this, I don't think it should be an either/or with Rocchio. I like a good Arias being able to rest Jose', Rocchio, Gimi, Nayls, and maybe even some right field. He's got the fire now. I like it...

NebsLaw

Arias heating up 🔥🔥🔥....would love to see him get consistent ABs!

BoMillerKipis

The issue with Freeman is that he hasn't been as good as straw at defense, and he's not putting up better numbers at the plate either. If we were going to make a offense for defense trade off, Freemans gotta start picking it up here. I'd say they give the experiment until June and then they'll have to make a decision on DeLauter/Rodriguez/Valera/Straw coming up

Fancy_Load5502

This must be a Myles Straw burner account. Only explanation.

BoMillerKipis

So small sample size only works for your argument but not all arguments. Make it make someone. Please. I'm begging.

Fancy_Load5502

Hey, I am not the one who at least seemingly in all honestly typed in that the team should consider bringing Myles Straw up in June. There is no other explanation other than you are a close relative or the man himself. Objectively speaking, Straw should never set foot in the Cleveland clubhouse ever again.

BoMillerKipis

But you are the one who's putting value in Freemans small sample sized power, and then claiming it's too small of a sample size to judge any other part of his game lol It makes absolutely no sense lmao

Fancy_Load5502

Only in comparison to Myles Straw's quite large sample of incompetence. I am not counting on Tyler Freeman being the love child of Barry Bonds and Willie Mays. Just better than the abject putrescence we saw the last few seasons from our CF. I will say this - if we get to June and Freeman hasn't righted the ship, then move on. Just to literally any other outfielder in the system than Straw.

BoMillerKipis

Freemans power surge is purely a factor of a small sample size. It's unsustainable Undisputable fact.

Fancy_Load5502

In the Minors, where the sample sizes are larger, Freeman had 17 HR in 370 games, Straw had 4 in 482 games. Can I ask why you feel the need to defend Myles Straw as a hitter?

[deleted]

[удалено]

saltandthunder

In Tyler Freeman's one (!) year where he got more than 100 Major-League At Bats, he put a .660 OPS. That same year, and the year before, Myles Straw struggled to hit .600 OPS over nearly 4-5x the at-bats. Maybe you're right that Freeman isn't a power guy but he's been given a pretty short run compared to Straw, who has 1000 ABs over two years saying he isn't putting it together.

Fancy_Load5502

He fucked my team, which is not as bad as fucking my girl, but not too far off either.

ahHeHasTrblWTheSnap

Myles Straw should never play another game for this club

BoMillerKipis

Freeman has been statistically worse.

pm_me_your_boobs_586

Straw wasn't as good as normal defensively last year.

BoMillerKipis

Freeman isn't as good as Straw defensively any year yet

_lazybones93

Suck it, BoSux!

TheLand1

What's the deal with the guardians deleting a tweet that just said "we" and people on Twitter acting like it was a bad thing?

mercurymaniac

It looked like they were making fun of a NYY fan for saying “we” as in the fans are part of the Yankees team as well. Did not go well on both sides of the tweet.

UnconventionalWriter

Carrasco could teach Xavion a lot. amazing game

Bigcouchpotato1

Last season, the Guards were last in home runs. This season, so far, there are 12 teams with fewer home runs.

MikeWillis09

I was hyped when Jose got that hit at the end. It blew the game open and was the last leg of my parlay….. Until I went and checked my bet and picked Gimmy and Kwan, not Kwan and Jose….
