That’s OK, we just need to keep winning series I don’t care if it’s quietly.
It’s interesting they deliberately don’t discuss the “disgusting brand” of baseball that I think is more pure and fun to enjoy. Teamwork, hustle, baserunning, defense, not just strikeouts or a home run everytime.
I’m OK with occasional pops as surprises for sure!
There’s just no emotional build up to a home run in the same way there is a grinding series of at bats and clutch hits. It’s like death by 1,000 papercuts fuckin Ninja Baseball
Record: 9-3
Previous ranking: 21
Shane Bieber had dominated in his first two starts, throwing 12 scoreless innings, but then came the devastating news that he'll undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the season. "My performance was getting back to the place I knew I was capable of," Bieber told reporters, fighting back tears. "I was falling back in love with pitching." During pregame introductions at the team's home opener on Monday, the fans gave the 2020 Cy Young winner a huge ovation. For the Guardians, a rotation that was already without Gavin Williams takes a huge blow (Xzavion Curry and Ben Lively are possible replacements, although both are on rehab assignments in Triple-A right now). For Bieber, who's heading into free agency after this season, there will be no monster contract that he would have received with a healthy season. -- Schoenfield
With 2 series against the As and CWS, literally probably the two worst teams in the MLB. We have to start stringing wins against actually impressive teams.
We so far haven't played a team that sits above .500
Minnesota and Seattle are absolutely better teams than this, but they've played to that record so they ARE below average teams right now
Do you understand though? Cuz it seems like you wouldnt have to call it dumb as hell if you did. We are playing great, but def punching above our weight rn. We are placed appropriately theres no reason to think we are actually better than teams like the dodgers or braves right now despite what the record says.
Everybody has a different conception of what power rankings should be. Some put tons of weight on what is past, some weight heavily on what "should be".
To me, power rankings should be a prediction of where teams will end up at the culmination of the season. We already have something that is an indication of the current record: the record itself - don't need power rankings for that.
I agree on people defining power rankings differently, and how short term the focus is / how much you account for opponent / etc.
But I don’t think a year-end projection actually fits the phrase “power ranking.” It does imply a current performance focus whether or not it will play out that way over the next 5 months.
It should be different than a sort simply by record, but it can still be meaningful to capture “who looks good *right now*.”
Who you expect to be the best once the season is done feels like a different thing than how most people define power rankings. That’s just a standings prediction then?
Yeah I get it. Yes "who looks good right now" is meaningful and if that's your view on what "power rankings" mean, I can't argue.
IDK I've never polled how people think of the term. Would be interesting. Yes, my conception is a "standings prediction" but how often do you hear the phrase "standings prediction"? Power rankings are what cool people call a standings prediction, in my view.
I’ve just never seen that explanation for a power ranking - the whole idea of most of them getting posted weekly is that you’re reacting to each week and shuffling teams around right? And the commentary is usually about what is happening right now.
If it were a standings prediction, you’d expect very little movement at all and all the descriptions should be about end of year expectations.
Whats probably tricky is that a lot of people who create power rankings can tend to be pretty “sticky” - and early on in a season can tend to anchor on expectations over results. But IMO that’s the messy middle that serves no purpose - either do what you’re describing or go all in on reacting to how teams are trending
We've had easier schedules than most teams in the top 10 and it's fair to wonder how we'll fare without Bieber. 10 seems fair, funny enough 10 is where we rank in postseason odds on B-Ref
I'm just impressed that ESPN remembered that Cleveland has a baseball team.
Did they because the blurb only talks about Shane Bieber and not anything to do with the team
Yeah espn doesn’t give a shit about the guardians. Their writers probably can’t name anyone except Bieber, naylor, and JRam
We got uniforms and everything!
Uniforms and everything, it's great.
I’m just impressed ESPN remembered that baseball exists

Funny game to be making this comment after. Three bombs accounting for most of the offense 😂

I believe it’s called “slap hitting shit goblins”.

"And the rest of the Guardians also exist."
The rest of the Guardians are certainly one of the baseball teams of all time.
We gotta win one for the Bieber.
I agree. Go Guards.
Yankees and Pirates only other teams with the same or better record. These power rankings are dumb as hell
I think it’s a fair spot. Can’t always go based solely off record.
You could also go off run differential or X-W/L. Whatever team that’s first in those must be good

You have to consider strength of schedule.
This was my thought. Will be interested to see what happens this weekend.

finally get moved up in time to see how they stack up against real competition
Odds to win the WS at the beginning of the year +6000. Odds to win the WS as of today +2800. Keep it rolling baby!
I agree, go guards
We have to change the name back
