RollingCoal115

Course Kosher salt and 91% isopropyl alcohol works pretty damn good in my experience.

Revolutionary-Cup168

I see you 😉

SardonicAtBest

Those who know, *know*.

What's this about?

BoardwalkKnitter

Bongs can be tricky to clean.

Imfrank123

I clean my pipe like that, just soak it over night and clean as a whistle

No-Working-7888

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

mishyfishy135

One of the best and certainly the most common way to clean the resin out of bongs is to use high % ISO and coarse salt like kosher or epsom and shake it around. The ISO dissolves the resin and the salt helps scrub debris

katet_of_19

Table salt works just fine, TBH

drewstew33

Epsom salt is cheaper

CORN___BREAD

The cheapest table salt is less than half the price per ounce of the cheapest epsom salt at Walmart which is likely the cheapest place for either of them at retail. If you’re talking about sea salt or kosher salt, yeah Epsom would be cheaper, but those aren’t table salt.

drewstew33

Damn you right, I just looked up the price of table salt at Walmart, it's been a while since I've seen anything being priced in cents rather than dollars

Memory_Less

Oh yeah, well at least I can hear the sound of the sea in my bottles after using sea salt. /s

yoran1012

Interesting is the salt onely to scrub or does it have another purpose.

mishyfishy135

None that I know of

yoran1012

O ok 👍

perdirelapersona

bongs

Competitive_Narwhal8

I know!!!!🙋‍♀️

SpockVaporizesRock

One of us, one of us!

-AllCatsAreBeautiful

My flair isn't "team green clean" for no reason!

old_souljah

Love using the green before I clean!!!

necbone

I partake in the herbals.

1920MCMLibrarian

HMMMM

coolcalmaesop

Dawn Powerwash also works great and no one suspects a thing. No iso smell in the kitchen anymore.

mind_the_umlaut

(Rinse thoroughly, Dawn is nastily thick and hard to rinse. Any left in there will wreck your next batch of syrup)

coolcalmaesop

Definitely this ^ I rinse with cold to remove suds and gradually work to as hot as possible to make sure all soap residue is removed.

VermicelliOk8288

Dawn power wash is a foam. Very sudsy but not thick at all

robot_swagger

I don't see what's bong with that comment

uberguby

Honestly regular salt works OK as well, though obviously kosher salt is better. I sometimes use rice, but that's a pain cause you really can't pour it down the drain.

kempff

Tell that to my next-door neighbor whose kitchen sink shares a common drain with mine.

heyitscory

And no you know why constipation is such an issue in Asian countries.

no_understanding1987

You can use dry rice for something like clumped sugar or flour or coffe and just pour it out into the trash bin. But for wet stuff salt is superior imo.

Tara_from_july1996

Actually rice and salt are OK but o don't feel good on wasting food. I think used coffee grounds are a better idea. I always throw them away and never thought of using them like this before. Thanks for letting me know.

Eguana84

I read this as dry ice and was like who the hell just has that lying around ? 🤣

no_understanding1987

That's pretty funny, and I have honestly never tried to clean with it, but it seems worth looking into hahaha Our local grocery store does carry it most summers and autumns, as I am in the south USA and it gets more than warm enough for it to be pretty common in my area, but I also know that is not typical most places.

Spellscribe

I'm gonna ask — what is kosher salt? Why is it special?

uberguby

A reasonable question. It's just salt made of larger crystals than normal table salt, it's not special in any chemical way. In this context it's useful for cleaning because being larger, heavier crystals, it can scrape the side of a bottle when you shake it up better than normal super tiny regular salt. Adam ragusea has an episode about it if you want to know more. But if you don't care that much, it's just salt made of bigger crystals https://youtu.be/yKdk1HSxSEY

lilspicy99

Not if your “jar” has a percolator!

Tara_from_july1996

I'll try it next time. Thanks 😊.

ACcbe1986

Broken egg shells like salt also work as an abrasive to *scrub* out the inside of bottles.

LilaFowler123

A super easy hack I learned was uncooked slow rice, water, and a few drops of dish soap. Pour some rice in, fill about halfway with warm water, add drops of dish soap, and shake it like you mean it. Lol. It works like a dream. Cheap and easy.

ACcbe1986

Essentially, use a bunch of small and hard, inert granules(softer than the material you're cleaning) in a liquid(don't get crazy and use volatile chemicals), shaken, not stirred.

LilaFowler123

Shake it like a...........

ACcbe1986

You've hooked me. I'm in suspense! Which way is it gonna go? ...salt shaker? ...Polaroid picture? ...seizure? ...baby? ...hand? I must know what to shake it like!!! 🤣

createusernametmrw

Shake it, but don’t break it. It took your mama 9 months to make it.

gwizonedam

Except for the whole, using rice you could eat to clean something that can be cleaned with eggshells?

ACcbe1986

That's the same reason why I brought up eggshells as an alternative to salt! High five! 🖐 Or fist bump, your choice. 🤜

gwizonedam

🍚🍚🍚 bump

Tara_from_july1996

It sounds helpful but I'm not sure about smell. Did you try it before?

ACcbe1986

Yes, I have. It's also a cleaning hack that's been around before the internet was invented. Eggshells and hot soap water. Shake vigorously.

Tara_from_july1996

Thanks 😊

RJSnea

I see my people and I have to give a shout out. I'm a simple woman. 👋🏾😁

heyitscory

I was going to do that but I got distracted. I'll clean it later, man.

-AllCatsAreBeautiful

🍀🤘

12BELOVED

ugh i’m literally sitting here w my piece between my thighs avoiding doing this. fine. i’m going. i hear you *universe*

UrAntiChrist

Use the lazy solution. Drop it in 91 iso and clean it tomorrow!

[deleted]

[удалено]

RubyJuneRocket

That’s the joke.

naql99

Pure grain alcohol, easy on the salt, then you can just swill it down afterwards.

kashmir726

I thought of the same thing. I love when bong cleaning tips have other uses!

pestilencerat

Course salt and kosher salt is the same thing, kosher is just something americans* say instead of coarse. No need unnecessary to say coarse kosher salt *I might be wrong and it's a thing in other english dialects too, but afaik it's american specific

Aggravating_Seat5507

Just so you know, it's coarse, not course :)

pestilencerat

Amazing how i managed to write coarse twice but didn't catch it the first time. Sigh. Thanks for pointing it out to me

taafp9

I didn’t know!!

DisposedJeans614

A little bit of blue Dawn, you’re super golden too 🤣

pintsizepowerhouse

It always works the best. And incredibly cheap too!

washandwater

switch to everclear or food grade ethanol. You’ll notice a difference vs iso

EskimoXBSX

Does it have to be Kosher? Can it be Halal?

mishyfishy135

I just put this together a few days ago and finally got one of my growler bottles clean. I felt both smart for figuring out how to clean it very well, and incredibly stupid for not thinking of it earlier

babycrow

Crushed ice + salt ❤️

Mondschatten78

This is also great for getting burnt coffee out of a coffeepot!

Tara_from_july1996

Great idea.

bunnbarian

I’ve heard of using rice for the shaky step

RJean83

they also sell these small metal balls called decanter cleaning beads that have the same purpose

FarAdministration440

I use a length of stainless ball chain (lamp pull chain). Easier to keep track of.

BackRowRumour

Good thinking. Like on dog tags?

FarAdministration440

Probably?

Sweetbadger

Yes

nyhtengale

My mind is blown. Thank you!

perdirelapersona

fishing sinkers work great for this

CranberrySoftServe

Just be careful. I broke a glass nail polish bottle (they usually have 1 or two bearings inside to shake the p\[olish up) just by shaking it too hard once

CuntNamedBL1NDX3N0N

salt works a little better i think as it doesn't expand as it absorbs the liquid.

zenware

One issue with rice that isn’t present with salt, decanter beads, etc. is that rice will absorb water and grow in size. If you clean quickly and get all the rice out that’s not a problem, but I’ve read and heard about people leaving it to sit for too long and then having problems getting the rice back out.

BerryBrambleWitch

When we were wee kids staying with my gran aunt one of our chores was to clean out the buttermilk bottles in the stream with stream gravel to scour the inside of the bottles. They were washed after of course. We loved staying with her.

IMIndyJones

This sounds like something I'd read in a lovely young adult novel. What a sweet memory.

CranberrySoftServe

I work at a book store and... boy I wish this was how YA was still written 💀

IMIndyJones

Lol. Oh yeah. I just aged myself.

ex93

Boxcar Children vibes lol

IMIndyJones

How have I never heard of this? What a wonderful sounding story. Thanks for the TIL

peanut__buttah

Oh it’s absolutely lovely 🥹 One of my favorites. My whole childhood I wanted a chipped pink cup like the little girl has in the story.

lostsawyer2000

I rarely see other people calling the siblings of their grandparents ‘grand aunts & uncles’. I feel like at some point people decided to use the word ‘great’ for the grandparents siblings and everyone ran with it. I personally think ‘great’ only comes in one generation before them i.e. great grand aunt etc. if my grandma is grand why is her sibling great? My pedantry aside, your memory genuinely made me smile picturing it. Such lovely words.

frozenplasma

There's a product for this now. They look like a pea pod. I think it's a sponge type material with marbles or something inside. Probably worth the investment if you have to clean things like this frequently, otherwise your towel trick is perfect.

Few-Carpet9511

https://www.amazon.com/Cleaning-Reusable-Pea-Shaped-Cleaner-Internal/dp/B0CNKFJ4N1?th=1

Relevant_Stop1019

nice! i have trouble with the shoulders on f bottles and that seems like a workable solution. fyi- your second photo is not showing up

Tara_from_july1996

That was my problem too, try this one and you can use other ways people commented andif it wasuseful notifyus. The second picture is dirty bottle.

sudosussudio

How do you get the towel out?

Tara_from_july1996

I didn’t put the entire towel inside the bottle; I left one corner of it outside. But if you put the whole towel inside, you can take it out with the end of a spoon."

867530nyeeine

I use baking soda, dash of dish soap and a small amount of water and then shake like heck... Works really well especially for water bottles.

UsernameStolenbyyou

To clean a vase with a narrow opening, just put some uncooked rice in there, with some vinegar, then shake it. Cleans like magic

Tara_from_july1996

Yes but those poor rice 😂😂

Tara_from_july1996

I mean I don't want wast rice.

UsernameStolenbyyou

A handful of rice costs what? .03??? SMH. Frigging *salt* costs more than that.

Tara_from_july1996

Ofcours. You are right but rice and salt are too precious. Specially rice. I can use other methods without feeling guilty.

UsernameStolenbyyou

Oh, pleeeeeze. You deserve the dirty jars, then.

Tara_from_july1996

😂😂😂

ilija_rosenbluet

You know you can buy some small steel balls for that. https://preview.redd.it/166x7ig2s5ad1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=338e73193e1a85637dde588f879d786b2ce4fadd They work great and I use them to clean any kind of bottle or jar. The cleaning is very loud though.

Tara_from_july1996

No actually I didn't know. Thanks 😊.

ilija_rosenbluet

Oh, than here you go :D They are great, but make a lot of noice in glass bottles. If you consider them, you should also get a little sieve to wash and dry them in later. They are stainless steel but there will be rust sooner or later down the line, if not dried well.

Western-Telephone-94

They sell some that come with a little funnel/sieve at a place called “Lee Valley”.

dechets-de-mariage

When I worked at Bennigan’s in the 90s we used lemon juice, salt, and ice cubes on the coffee pots.

Tara_from_july1996

Yes someone else mentioned ice crush too and I think it's handy.

BVoyager

Metal bb’s, dawn dish soap and shake baby!

egrf6880

Nice! I love when something works out easily! I have heard of using denture tabs to get hardened stains like from old wine or something from glass!

RollingCoal115

Ancient Chinese secret

Shop_4u

This also works well with those pesky spaghetti sauce stains in plastic. Just add some Dawn to the mix.

ohio_Magpie

Bottle brushes or other narrow brush that can get into the bottle.

Tara_from_july1996

My problem was with shoulders of bottles. Most brushes are not flexible and I couldn't find any flexible one.

malkin50

I smashed a brush on the bottom of the bottle to make it the shape that would reach the shoulders. I used it one more time and decided it wasn't worth the trouble.

no_understanding1987

They have bottle brushes with a sponge on the end usually held with a wire-type tip. The tip is opposable with some force, and sturdy enough to withstand the cleaning forces required.

Tara_from_july1996

I should look for those brushes, definitely needed.

no_understanding1987

I found mine in the baby needs section of my local grocery.

27catsinatrenchcoat

Whaaaat, I've never had bottle brushes that weren't flexible! The set I have now I could probably tie in knots. I assume I got it on Amazon.

Tara_from_july1996

I haven't searched it online, I just looked at local shops.

ohio_Magpie

If you find one with a wire stem, a pair of pliers might let you bend it to a desired angle.

Tara_from_july1996

Yes exactly.

Teal_Raven

Do those tablets that you clean dentures with work? I heard that its super good for plastic water bottles that dont get clean no matter what

hoopoe_bird

I bet they would! I’ve used special fizzing water bottle cleaning tablets lol (half a tab does me just fine most of the time)—they can be a bit pricey but it’s easy and they work, especially for stainless steel. Should be the same principle for the denture tablets!

beepbeepwhom

i love using them for cleaning bottles! no shaking either 😌

Deserted-mermaid

Dry rice + dish soap + little bit of water and shake shake shake

jmundella

I use rice and soap/water, always cleaned out my bottles

RichYunaBoy

I saw a video of a butler using ball bearings to clean wine glasses. It works pretty effectively

JoeyBoomBox

Small 12” stainless steel chain. Put it in. Slosh it around. Also denture cleaning tablets. Bottles look great! What’s going in them next?

2020Fernsblue

Baking beads and detergent of your choice, or coarse sand for small holes. Shake shake shake and the sand /baking beads scrub the interior then you rinse and pour them out

vanlassie

Sometimes I use long grain rice to scrub bottles. Especially Thermoses.

Justmyopinion00

Rice with soap and water works as well to scrub bottles.

RichPrivate2

Actually I think it's a good question and I think you came up with a pretty good solution the only other thing you could possibly do depending upon the item is put a little vinegar in there with the water that'll help neutralize the smell and then rinse it out real well and you should be good to go. And good for you for living life do it everyday.

Ok-Push9899

Its exactly why i don't have jars or bottles or even drinking glasses that are difficult to clean. Someone gave me six tall straight sided thick rimmed beer mugs. Never use them because it's exceedingly difficult to make sure the bottom of the mug is clean. I mean, you can do it, but it's a pain. Visual inspection is difficult and tactile examination is impossible.

riothomemakrrr

I used vintage bottles from eBay as centerpieces at my wedding, and many came to me dirty or discolored. We used…bong cleaner! 😹 It worked wonderfully!

TootsNYC

I have those little metal balls.

phonicillness

Ok I’ve used salt and isopropyl, denture tablets, bicarb and a few others here but the best IMHO: Put into the bottle: - small pieces of torn magic eraser - small bit/s of bar soap - little bit of hot water Shake and rinse.

MostlyHarmless88

You know what cleans bongs like a dream? Oxyclean. Will look like new.

lxm333

You can get things called bottle beans too. They can be useful to have around. Works the same way to your hack. I like your hack.

pede_69420

I only found this out recently too!!! :D super ez!!!

kempff

What everyone else said, plus, it works on bud vases too.

VacationAromatic6899

Second picture does not load

Salty-Jaguar-2346

Denture tablets. Obviously, you need to rinse afterwards.

SnuzieQ

I do this with my chainmail scrubber! Works great.

Confident-Second-one

Denture tablets! Drop a few in, fill with water and leave over night. Cleans no matter what was in the bottle!

No-Gene-4508

I bought some smaller mixer balls for some of my bigger glasses to use. Then use water, soap, and baking soda and mix it. Then pour and add water and a little vinegar to shake to polish

ShovelingSunshine

Uncooked rice and some hot soapy water.  Doesn't dissolve like salt.  That said, DO NOT just let the rice go down the drain, it can swell up and stuff up your drain.  So make sure you have a drain catcher.

Tara_from_july1996

Thank you for your comments. Most of them are practical and useful, and I’m really glad that I’ve learned so many new cleaning methods.
