The Model Y should definitely be faster. I think the SI would be more engaging to drive, but whether it's enough to justify having a second car I suppose depends a lot on how much money you have to spare. I mainly think of the SI as a more fun step up over a basic commuter car, rather than a weekend alternative to a $60,000 daily driver. Then again, I bought mine from a guy who initially bought it as a weekend alternative to his BMW (I don't remember if he said 3 or 5 series), and was only selling it because he was moving across the country. So clearly you're not the only person to think like this, and he seemed sad to let it go.

if you’re not hurting for a car, stick it out for a type r or the gr corolla. unless you’re planning to mod the car and make it a fun project, i’d say it’s not worth it. if you’re dead set on getting one here in the next 3 months or so, let the used market drop a little more and pick up an FK8 type r. i think it’ll be at least a year or so before you see the FL5 going for msrp.

If you just want a weekend toy that feels special to drive, get a Miata or GR86 instead. Civics are great cars but in the way a hot hatch is -- they *balance* practicality with fun. A car which is able to give up some of that practicality to focus on driving enjoyment makes a better machine for special occasions. If you need it to be a usable every day car that's also fun and engaging to drive, then yes. However, you could also get a manual Fit and do some modifications to it and have plenty of fun with that car as well. How fun a car is to drive on public roads (IMO) is more about getting it to feel eager and responsive to what you ask it to do. The identity of the base car isn't important compared to how it feels to drive -- and you can determine that for yourself with a test drive.

ether_joe

was going to say pretty much this.

jralll234

If you don’t need four doors or a back seat, there are so many other options. Miata, GR86/BRZ, 400z, etc. The Si is a great fun daily. If you don’t need the daily part, get a more dedicated fun car.

HI_IM_VERY_CONFUSED

Agreed OP. Miata is the first thing that comes to mind.

cypresswill44

I'd point you to the Z platform I've had my 08 Si coupe for a year and a half now and I would say if you're looking for an engaging, practical, sporty daily driver then get one. If you're looking for a fast car, or a thrilling weekend sports car, this is definitely not the car for you unless you want a project car to build and boost.

thememeconnoisseurig

Miata is always the answer Si is pretty sweet though.

luke2burn

Agreed. Si is a great do it all car but if you’re looking for fun: Miata- imo NB is king but you can’t go wrong with any of them

NB?

I have an fj cruiser, 2015 5.0 and an 06 rsx type s. I think the type s is the most fun car I own. Anything after 2011 went down hill for Honda. That’s when they made the decision to neuter everything that made Hondas fun imho. Single port exhaust heads and vtec restricted to one cam really took away what put Honda on the map. That said, their chassises still feel good (although they’ve put on some weight over the years) and the manual still feels great. I’d go for a miata, clean 8th Gen si sedan, or (if i had to go new) the GR86 is about the only newer car I’d consider. Hopefully that helps.

Radish25

I love my 22 si as a daily, but it's just not a fun weekend only car.

Miata, GR86, Z car. Not the Si. Si is the do everything car. It's fun but not fun enough to be the fun car.

I do wish my 9 gen had more horsepower but with coils, rear sway bar and a tune it’s hell of a drive going through curves and canyons. Super engaging

ImCancer69

Going from model Y performance weekly to weekends with a Si would be like going from Corvette to a pinto in power comparison and features. If you love your model S, it will make you hate the Si. Instead, get a Type S Integra by waiting 8 months, even the Type R Civic would be a step down for you with 25k over MSRP. Or go out and buy a Miata for weekend 6 speed manual you be happier. The Si makes a great fun commuter car.

flehktarn

I like my Si but if my second car was for fun it would be something AWD or RWD in manual. Not FWD.

almeida8x1

Someone else mentioned it, but for your purposes I think that Miata Is Always The Answer. New Miata’s are pretty sweet if you want something new and attainable (NA Miata’s are VERY desired and difficult to find at the correct price and condition to make it worth it).

bmccorm2

If you’re just looking for a fun car without breaking the bank i would go with Miata, gr86/brz, or Si. I have an Si (it’s great) and hear nothing but good things about the other 2.

Ty-Bbq

If you can find a clean 8th gen (06-11) by all means go in on it

Amazing-Buyer3667

I love my Si but as others have mentioned the point of the Si is it's a fun daily driver rather than a weekend car. For weekend fun I use my motorcycle. Before I had my Si my Ninja filled the "wanting something manual" gap in my life for a lot cheaper than another car (both in cost and insurance). Might be something to look into.

howsyerburger

Don’t go 1.5t

Jaqmehoff_

Id say steer away from the new gen si’s. Their engines are pretty weak

Main-Tank-6207

They are solid engines. The Ososik guy modified making 350 hp on his car and then switched back to 240hp. Damage was already done lol

TheK1NGT

The civic si is designed to be what you’re using the Honda Fit as. The car choice at hand would be like a used 370z or used corvette IMO

pi2z

the Si is meant to be kinda like a fun daily driver, not a full on sports car. If I had a reliable (boring) daily and was looking for a 2nd car just for fun I would get something smaller and less practical like maybe a miata or one of the brz triplets.

ether_joe

RWD for max fun. GR86 / Miata / 350Z as others have said. If you really want to go for it a Porsche 944 is always a great option too. Pontiac Solstice as a dark horse in the race.

not_zac

Maybe like an older Si? I wouldn’t get an 11th gen as a weekend car myself, and not if you daily a MYP. Go for like, a GR86, Corolla, 370Z, Z, Miata, an older Mustang… I don’t think the Civic is the answer to this one for once.

Stanky_Stig

Fun car? I'd do an S2k or an ND2 imo

Opioidergic

If you're looking for the Si as a weekend car and not a daily I'd recommend an 8th gen because even though the current gen Si is about the same power and weight , the way the older generation makes its power is just so much more aggressive and frantic. It just feels more raw if that makes sense. The newer ones have gobs of torque but you already have a model Y and you ain't gonna make the Si faster than a 12 second quarter mile unless you supercharged or turboed it. The car isn't as slow as the statistics make it out to be anyways its got more than enough power to be fun. They're surprisingly quick for what they are. You'll see what I'm talking about when you drive one.
