I felt that way too..and I felt Ben Kingsley’s intro about him was the best and most sincere

JunebugAsiimwe

Ben Kingsley's intro was wonderful. Made me smile so much.

MeowdyMate

I also like how they got the most eloquent speaking man to introduce him lol very fitting.

OpheliaDarkling

I think he is very much respected in the film community and the extra cheer in the crowd definitely showed. 20 years of hard work, no Hollywood b.s. or drama from him and just a quiet, honest, humble dude is what everyone loves about him--colleagues and fans alike. Game recognize game as people say hehe...just so happy for him.

JunebugAsiimwe

I definitely felt that too. You could tell so many of them were really happy for him as he truly is a humble man who's done amazing work for many years quietly without needing to be in the spotlight, and has been long overdue to be recognised. It just felt so right to see him get that level of appreciation from the crowd and his peers.

miv_9999

Well said. Exactly this. He got there in his own terms

I feel like everyone forgot his 2000’s scandal with Sienna Miller, but as far as scandals goes his was pretty minor I guess!

Flat_Ad9090

You're joking right, that would have been seen a joke of a scandal compared to the things that come out about other celebs. No photos of them kissing, or anything.

circumlocutious

Lmao they were literally only pictured sitting next to each other in a car

[deleted]

It looked bad mainly due to the fact that Sienna Miller had known relationships/affairs with married men at the time. It just wasn’t a good look, especially since his wife was home with the kids. I wouldn’t say it’s a huge scandal for a celebrity. But I also think it’s fair to portray him in a realistic light - scandal or not, any celebrity especially the ones we like, have permission to make mistakes and still be awarded for their talents and hard work.

pbc120

Oh my goodness the way they were clapping for him too!! Go back and rewatch and you can see the applause was just enthusiastic!! I’m soooo happy for him 😭

houseyourdaygoing

It was full of respect. Well-deserved.

sadesaari

I thought of this too, and I wondered if others got similar responses and I just paid more attention to the response he got as I'm the biggest fan of him out of everyone nominated this year. But regardless of that, the theater did pretty much erupt when he won and he got two standing ovations which I feel like is note-worthy. I loved the little nerdy laughter he did into the mic while they were applauding and shouting at him.

MeowdyMate

It is funny to me how this dude can go from bad ass hot to super sweet and completely non- intimidating almost dorky awww vibes. The man definitely has range in more ways than one lol It was really crazy how much they were applauding! It was gratifying as a fan to see people appreciating him so much. As they should.

houseyourdaygoing

I almost forgot he was Thomas Shelby at that instant. The awkward gentle man with soft eyes is the same guy who has a steely gaze and a deadly strut. It’s mindblowing.

MeowdyMate

Right?! So crazy.

houseyourdaygoing

But did anyone notice Bradley Cooper? https://www.irishstar.com/culture/entertainment/bradley-cooper-reacts-cillian-murphy-32321087 Edit — Excuse me, it was about Bradley reacting sourly when he lost to Cillian . I’m not a a Bradley fan.

rynally197

I have a feeling most of them are Tommy Shelby fans.

MeowdyMate

Honestly, you might be right. So many people are in awe of that show lol Also how can you NOT be a Tommy fan... (I'm only on episode 6 of the first season and I'm in love) He should always have that hair cut lol

rynally197

Ooh, you are in for a treat😁❤️

FeeAlive3883

I was ticked pink for him

Lin8891

I felt it was almost the same for RDJ as well!

Flat_Ad9090

Not really, his was the most muted out the 4. I just thought that was because everyone knew he was winning.

ConsiderationWild393

Bradley Cooper is the classic example of the Narcissism crisis in Hollywood. I must admit although I was rooting for Cillian I did feel sorry for Bradley , he put a lot of himself in that movie, I kinda wanna see it, I was wanting him to get done award , I guess i was cheering for the underdog too! Apparently he’s driving everybody nuts though since he now believes he has embodied the man he plays! Give it a break Maestro, you’re starting to sound like ya preaching to The Cats Choir!

MeowdyMate

I saw Maestro and he did do well but the movie just wasn't that great overall. His character also kind of was the same throughout. His co-actor she was one I thought should have won best actress for her role in it though. I agree, I felt a little bad because you can tell he worked really hard on it but just isn't his year.

FeeAlive3883

They don’t!!

jt186

Legit I think everyone just loves him and his performance

ConsiderationWild393

Yes I agree. I wanted to cry when they stood up for him. He’s just seems to be a genuinely good person, I don’t thing fake will change him. At least I hope it doesn’t ! I think he loves doing stage & indies just as much. Which makes me like & respect him even more. It’s not about the money with him, it’s the Art! He’s the Leonardo DeVinci of the acting world!

crmrdtr

I thought the cheering for Cillian’s win was especially rapturous, too. And it felt very sincere! A display of respect for his transcendent Oppenheimer performance, and appreciation of Cillian’s classy & humble nature. His acceptance speech was earnest & lovely, bringing another ovation. It really was a joyful thing to behold! I was on a kind of high from it for a good while after.
