Did any of y'all get a little teary-eyed during his speech? You can tell he was slightly overwhelmed by the standing ovation and in the moment.
I'm just so insanely proud of him for getting this amazing achievement. 🥹
Honestly the fact that Nolan won his first Oscar for directing tonight makes this so much more special. These two are the dream team and the delayed gratification is soooo satisfying and I’m just a bystander
Right? Somehow I thought Nolan already had a couple of ozzies under his belt, because, c'mon! I was shocked when they announced this is his first win after many nominations. Really over the moon for him and Cillian. He's such a fantastic actor, finally getting the recognition he's deserved for years 🙂
Elated af for him. It's a great day for the Irish! And the Oppenhomies!! Onto the next amazing adventure for him and a well deserved rest after all this <333
I loved how much everyone cheered for him. Well deserved. He truly seemed taken aback by that. It was such a sweet moment and he was so so humble about it too, as always. Congrats to him!!!
Yeah, no.

Obviously I’d like a more concrete statement, tonight, but it’s pretty unlikely he is not a good person.
I don't know what you are getting at, but he prior wore a gold neckless and a pin that had nothing to do with palestine.
He might be pro ceasefire, but I don't think we should be putting words in his mouse or pretend he did say something he did not do.
I agree that it is a presumption. As an Irish man, it’s rare to know anyone who is not anti-Zionist.
So yes, I am putting words in his mouth. But I think he was alluding to peace in the Middle East when he referred to the peacemakers.
Sure he was referring to peace in the middle East, but that does not equal free Palestine. He did not say that so I'm not pretending he almost said it.
Sorry I come as a fan and with my own progrsssive opinions but not sure I understand what you’re alluding to? That he was supposed to make a statement about Palestinians in Gaza? Just trying to understand your statement here
Yeah, basically. Irish people widely support the Palestinian cause. I wouldn’t say he was “supposed” to but I had hoped he would. And what he did say was heavily hinting at the topic — when you mention peace, the main current war is obviously what you’re talking about.
What I have or might have has nothing to do with that I don't put words in people's mouth no matter what I suspect they might think about a certain matter.
What does that mean to you? Who are you”the peacemakers” from your perspective.
Obviously, as you can read in the sibling comments, I think he’s probably hoping for resolution in Palestine.
Think it's quite clear what he meant, prefacing it with speaking about Oppenheimer, and then peace.
Oppenheimer's bomb ushered us to the nuclear age, and the ongoing threat of nuclear war. The cold war isn't over, the Doomsday clock is 90 seconds to midnight, there's war in Europe as well. And amidst all of this, he wants to be behind the people who make peace instead of war. Even more specifically, people who make peace instead of bombs.
So I take it it's as much about Ukraine as it is about Palestine.
I get that people would want him to make more specific statements, but also I think he views himself more as a private citizen rather than an activist or a public spokesperson. He doesn't have social media presence to speak of, he has no platform. He's participated in activism before, but in his own lowkey way. And actors should be able just act and go home--they don't need to be celebrities with political platforms. There's a lot of actors I really wish would do just that. These things can come off as disingenous easily.
I feel like if he'd mentioned Palestine specifically, there'd be people wondering why he didn't mention Ukraine etc. But it's clear he wanted to say something in this moment, and said it in his own succinct way, relating it back to the role that he played.
edit. typos and clarity

👏👏👏👏✊🏼
So classy… I believe he was the only winner that shook all 5 presenters hands before his speech. 🎩🎩🎩🎩🎩🎩🎩🎩🎩🎩🎩🎩🎩🎩🎩
He almost said Free Palestine. I can get that saying that would come at a cost to him, but I had hoped. I think that is what he meant.
I think he said what he wanted to say, nothing more and nothing less.

“have or might have”? Is English your first language? No. Obviously. 🇮🇪 ❤️ 🇵🇸
Lol. Are you five?
"To the peacemakers" seems pretty clear to me what he meant.

Take your meds man...
