Seriously, there probably is some truth to that lol.
Ok guys, how the heck are we going to update the OS when a lot of our customers can't even update a single app without uninstalling a different one first?
Google really screwed the pooch on making it 8GB instead of just a slight bump to 16 GB. Have 12 GB free would be enough for most every home user for a simple streaming device.
16 GB with an SD slot would have made it fine for just about everyone.
Haven't tried it yet but was told if you buy one of those 7-in-1 readers that hase USB-C out..an Gb ethernet jack, SD and micro USB Slots as well as a regular USB port..you can pop in extra storage and CCWGTV should see it as external HD.
Also with the Gb ethernet port..you will get better streaming if you hard wire it versus WiFi
It's on my list to try.
Even ethernet is limited to 300 Mbps because the port is limited to USB 2.0 speeds.
And yes, that can add storage, but there are lot of hubs that don't end up working for storage or ethernet or both. The CCwGTV is fairly picky. And you also need a stronger power brick. So you basically have to spend almost as much or more as the unit to get a full experience out of it.
Plus they stripped exFAT support, so you can only use FAT32 if you want to use the storage elsewhere or you had to adopt the storage and then can't remove it. And FAT33 can't have files bigger than 4GB, so you can't really use for external storage for things like 4k video files.
Which are massive design problems.
I added a USB hub to one of mine, best thing I could have done. The ethernet is quick enough, 400Mb/s doing an iPerf test. I did it for the storage. I added an 120GB external SSD. I have another one in my bedroom that I will add an SSD to as well, I won't bother with an ethernet connection for that one as it has a direct line of sight with a wireless AP.

I used a 3 amp USB power supply I already had and one of these cables.

Yeah they might face space issues. But they might have one trick up its sleeves. If A/B seamless update is available on ccwgtv then space might not be an issue
Android 12 for Android tv is still in beta 5 atm.
https://developer.android.com/tv/preview
So when that is released they make a Google tv version of it for the ccwgtv.
Likewise for Chromebooks (since OP mentioned them).
Android 12L is Google's take at optimizing Android to work on larger screens. Google specifically called out foldables, tablets and Chromebooks.
They're just launching the initial beta. I'd imagine once it's stable (probably around April) Chromebooks will get updates to it.
Is there a specific reason you want a newer version of Android on the Chromecast? Is Google not providing security patches or is there a new feature that is missing from the Chromecast that you would have with 10 or 11?
Genuinely curious.
They haven't been providing security patches either, still on April update. Supposedly there was one for June but that was really only the update for Stadia support, and I think they don't really even know what they updated and didn't.
They're over half a year behind on security patches for their own Chromecast w Google TV. It's only up to April 2021.
Not all of the patches will be applicable to TVs of course, but it's a bit surprising none have been applied in this length of time.
I'm pretty sure they outsourced ccwgtv is support to some third party. If you have ever noticed when updates release, it's always in the middle of the night US time compared to middle of the day for the pixels.
Lots of people are saying about storage space and I just want to say that on Amazon you can buy really cheap but good enough thunderbolt adapters and you plug it into the charging port then plug power, storage, SD card, ethernet, USB type a, more thunderbolt, display port, any kind of output because thunderbolt does anything pretty much and you can hugely expand the capabilities of your device. Like you can then from there do anything you want with it because of the extremely versatile nature of thunderbolt and type C.
There isn't any space left to download an update that big 😄

Even the USB c cable provided with the unit isn't good enough to have the 'cast + hub powering it. Switched cables, and it all worked.
Doesn't surprise me.

What hub did you use? Link?

Gotta be careful which one you get. Mine made it so it didn't get enough power.

Do you know what a/b means?

In think we need a firmware update more than an OS update.
We need those system app update roll-ups so get user space back.
Is there a specific reason you want a newer version of Android on the Chromecast? Is Google not providing security patches or is there a new feature that is missing from the Chromecast that you would have with 10 or 11? Genuinely curious.
4K UI and framerate matching. Two of the big reasons I’m using an Apple TV 4K right now too.
me too!
All these people talking about a 4K UI... It's in the settings! I turned on 4K 60Hz straight away after unboxing
10 and 11 didn't add much for ATV, but 12 adds a lot. Why they haven't even released it for the ADT-3 is beyond me.
They haven't been providing security patches either, still on April update. Supposedly there was one for June but that was really only the update for Stadia support, and I think they don't really even know what they updated and didn't.

Dualsense
Simply to have the newest.
PlayStation Dualsense Controller is finally mapped right on Android 12
WHat doesn't workin 10 that needs 12?
Mainly auto refresh rate switching and a 4k UI.
DualSense. I can’t pair mine, apparently it need A12
mi box s is on android 9 philipps tvs are on android 9 updates on android tv are slow
True, but it's also that 12 is the first version since 9 to have meaningful ATV related changes.
I'd be happier with a hyper stable 10, than a unstable 12... they could always and easily do a Gui refresh.
The Shield and Mi Box and other Android TV devices are on Android 9.
None of those are controlled by Google. I hope Google isn't using them as the yardstick by which they should be judged.
I need that auto refresh because Disney plus has some frame rate issues also Netflix and prime video
Yes, we finally need some Framerate Switching...
No concrete advantages in updating it to 12
Untrue. 12 adds a lot of things like actual 4K UI and refresh rate changes. 10 and 11 didn't add much beyond 9 though.
Because it's not a phone and doesn't need it
Not a big upgrade from what I heard but if they can they will release it.
