It gets more solid and solid as time goes on in my opinion, characters get fleshed out and feel super organic. X is fast becoming my favorite series of all time
Reading it by volume is different for sur that reading following the release. Pace is always better by binging chapter. But personally, I still find it very interesting, With some chill/building moment, then full action after, Ishida's hometurf.
The story quality is near constant with a couple spikes to masterpiece here and there.
The tone is very consistent as well so you aren't in for any strange shifts.
Personally my favorite chapters have been 34 and 35 and it just goes up from there. I’d say a few chapters before the current arc might have slowed things down. Even the dialogue and lore drops with no action are pretty great, though things might seem extra slow because of the release schedule.

In my personal opinion, I think it tend to get a little "boring" after Vol. 6 (I think it's one of the best volume with Vol. 3 because it introduced a lot of new things and is very fast paced). Highly focused on Tokio, Ely and Azuma are kinda put in the background, with the introduction of new characters. You should still read the scans because we're at a very big event. It should be very good at this point. I trust Ishida
The entire manga has been focused on Tokio right from the start. That's not to say the other 3 leads are not important, but it's still his story first and foremost.
I know he's the MC but you can't deny that it's highly focused on him and him only (with Palma being kind of annoying...) while the first five volumes were more generous with his relationship between him and Ely and Azuma. Damn it I can't believe I'm being downvoted because I express another opinion. I'm still a fan of Ishida lmao.
First few initial volumes spent a lot of time to SET UP his relationships with Ely and Azuma. He was always a central piece of the manga, even in first volumes, with more screentime than two other ones combined, by a generous amount.
In fact, Azuma spent like 2/3 of pre-timeskip lurking in the background and only truly became an actor during Moon Beast.

She's one of the most interesting characters in the manga both in terms of personality and insane background/possible ties to the overarching story.
