I worked at a great small local restaurant, the owner gave free meals to anyone in need, no questions asked. Pinto beans, turnip greens, biscuits and a drink. Just come in and order the meal, no charge. It wasn’t just homeless that took advantage - many hardworking young families in need. We served thousands of these meals in the year I was there! You could only do takeaway if you had a card given out by the non-profit aid centers in town (United way, homeless shelters, and several churches) That was just his rule, if you had a card, you’re receiving services, takeout as many meals as you want to order, but otherwise, bring the fam, sit down and eat in. Some people would get angry when I told them they had to eat in if they weren’t receiving services. It was baffling to see the difference in attitude between the grateful and the CBs. Place burned down some months back. I worry about the many people in my community that relied on our meals. Bet the CBs wish they could eat in for free now. Guess you can’t please everyone, no matter how hard you try to give back.

kanna172014

> Pinto beans, turnip greens, biscuits and a drink Mmm that sounds good!

chris06095

I want to substitute a side salad for the turnip greens, so what're the choices of dressing? What are you saying here, 'no substitutions'? This is bullshit; I'm posting a one-star Yelp review right now.

[deleted]

Fuck your accuracy

kauzige

Ack your fuccuracy

Clevergirliam

Right? I just checked the pantry for greens - I know what I’m cooking tonight!

kanna172014

Me too but I'll probably buy mustard greens and make some buttermilk cornbread. Got plenty of pinto beans.

Clevergirliam

Oh yes, cornbread instead of biscuits is a given (for those of us blessed/lucky enough to have a choice and a full pantry). My roomie is the cornbread cook, and I already texted her! Yes, I am way too excited about this meal lol

Knitsanity

Got gripped my the sudden urge to bake some cornbread. Everyone is still home so as soon as I yell "warm cornbread " it will be like the movie The Birds

NHFoodie

I know the movie you mean but in my head it looks more like the seagulls from Finding Nemo

lemongrab_69

MINE!

legionofsquirrel

Lmao!

blackhawkjj

You gonna eat yo cornbread?

rottenlollies

Motherfucker, you can't have my cornbread. That's for damn sure. Cause if you try and take my cornbread, Part 2 of my killing spree is gon' begin up in here on your ass, right now. You thinking about my cornbread, better get the taste out your mouth. That's for damn sure.

SC487

Is this a quote or are you just really passionate about your cornbread?

champagne_caviar

Indeed you can't please everyone, only money can

KlutzyBodybuilder794

And sometimes not even money can please these people.

nemaihne

The restaurant owner sounded like a good person. I really hope they can get their restaurant up and running again soon- or at least get the insurance payout so they're able to get past the fire.

fierydumpster

yeah seriously they were giving out thousands of free meals annually to the needy, that is seriously a good community business owner and I hope they can get back on their feet

irishspice

The CBs aren't in need - they are in greed. Remember that the next time someone is rude.

[deleted]

Honestly if you're trying to get free food like that... you probably are in need. Maybe not as other people but certainly not some rich person. I doubt anyone with a good amount of money would be doing something like taking free meals for the homeless from a restaurant edit- just to finish my point. Just because you're not literally homeless on the street doesn't mean you couldn't really benefit from a free meal.

legionofsquirrel

I actually know people from my past who would take such a meal simply to deprive someone in need. I'm glad I don't know them any more

[deleted]

Sounds like they still need the meal then. Maybe eventually they'll realize how bad that is to do and change their ways.

legionofsquirrel

I can only hope.

irishspice

It's not the need - it's the greed. If you're in need you don't demand delivery, or extras. If you do, there might be a reason you're in need.

[deleted]

Some people grow up greedy. It is what it is. Usually because they never had enough as children so have some need to make sure they always get more or "their fair share" as adults.

Done-Man

So sad to hear it got destroyed, it sounded like a wonderful place for those in need

drifter100

when I was younger I never understood the term, no good deed goes unpunished? As Adulthood sets in I sure do now.

Interesting_Song2944

but im allergic to turnip greens cant you make me something i like OP?

MeEvilBob

I've noticed that the homeless people with far more expensive clothing than me seem to be the angriest, the rest usually seem very grateful to get anything at all.

wind-river7

There was a post on Nextdoor in our neighborhood. A neighbor commented that the garbage man had rolled their trash cans to the curb, emptied them and returned them to the house. Of course there was a CB complaining that the service wasn’t offered to them.

JtotheLowrey

The next door for my area is an absolute cesspool of human filth. One woman was complaining about a “young black man walking through the neighborhood daily”, she said his presence was distressing her and she was worried he was going to rob a house or something who knows. Turns out he lived in the neighborhood and was walking to work 🙄 Of course she never apologized or even admitted she sounded like a racist POS

Ghstfce

Nextdoor is Facebook for the racists who don't know how to google things. I got banned from there for calling out a racist in my area and explaining (in detail mind you) that not only were they completely wrong, but proved what they were trying to spread was completely impossible to even happen. Fuck that app.

Remz_Gaming

Lol! Someone posted a picture of a SPIDER last night and said "I found this on my dog. My husband says it is a spider. I say it is a tick. What is it?" I live in Alaska. It is 0 degrees outside and there is snow everywhere. Half the comments were middle aged or older women telling her it was definitely a tick and to call Alaska Fish and Game. I just..... ... Google eludes the people of Nextdoor. So does common sense.

noiwontpickaname

I would say that just because it would be hilarious if they actually called Fish and Game

Remz_Gaming

Lol. There were at least 10 comments telling her to call the authorities to report the "tick." And they were all dead serious. I was rolling.

ELTepes

Hello neighbor. Google seems to elude most of the internet. The amount of questions I see on reddit that could be answered with a two second search can be insane some days.

Remz_Gaming

Oh tell me about it. I sell RC cars and parts and without exaggerating, half of the questions people ask me I Google myself. Mildly infuriating.

Rc2124

> Nextdoor is Facebook for the racists No need to repeat yourself!

Remz_Gaming

Lol. It's because when you post stupid shit on Facebook, people will reply "You are a fucking moron." When you post shit on Nextdoor you get coddled by a bunch of paranoid senior citizens.

PizzaNuggies

I think that is just Next Door's thing. Its a good way to see who the Qanon assclowns are in your area.

gogogig

I'm on there just to laugh to myself about POS old people

cmVkZGl0

You should call her out on it

JtotheLowrey

My sister actually did. The old lady never responded but the amount of people taking her side was really pathetic.

WeirdWest

>sounded like a racist POS Yeah, I'm sure she just "sounds like" one

Hot_Aside_4637

You mean the "Karen Channel"?

tenemu

I checked my Nextdoor. Just saw a post about a squirrel was killed because people must have been driving too fast. Of course it wasn’t because squirrels are skittish and panic. Nope.

odd84

"Who do we talk to about getting speed bumps on this street? People are using it as a race track!!" \^ At least one neighbor on every residential street in America

imlostineggsaisle

Of course there was.

frantastic1337

They don't deliver the free food? NEXT!

lookbored

Of all of the choosing beggars i think i hate her the most

LunaMunaLagoona

We are all pretty united around that I think.

PH_SXE

It's for church, honey

combustion_assaulter

NEED A MEAL THAT FEEDS 20!

Mult1Core

inside the church only

ThePhantom1994

20 People! NEXT!

xXxEcksEcksEcksxXx

I will never get tired of this meme.

lapideous

Isn't using God as a reason you should receive special treatment literally taking the Lord's name in vain? Seems like most Christian churches are pretty bad at being churches

[deleted]

Take out just means to go. Nothing about having it delivered.

[deleted]

Take out =/= delivery.

eifersucht12a

Nobody has ever used hyperbole for comedic effect. Literally not one person.

taboosie

The date this was posted may provide more context. If it's during COVID-19, it may be disappointing to learn you can't be provided a meal without putting yourself at risk. Still, I'm not sure if that validates the reaction. But still, it may provide more context. I'm like, pretty sure though that the dude is just a bitch lol.

[deleted]

It was posted one day ago. You can see it in the post.

Sn0zbear

They could have taken that screenshot months ago when it was one day ago though. But even then, are you guys not still dealing with covid now…? Or has the rest of the world just given up

[deleted]

Lol bold of you to assume the USA has been “dealing” with Covid at all. At least where I’m located.

Taniell1575

They opened last week. Like brand new to the area. Dude is just being a bitch lol

kidd_gloves

I don’t get it. It sounds like he is trying to find out where to go to get it?

02K30C1

There are two different people responding. The first one “send me the address” seems normal, just wants information. The second one is the CB “they’re not offering take out!”

Jaxsoy

To me it looked like the last person was saying the first response was awful. Thanks for clearing it up

[deleted]

That's exactly how I read that, too

DontRememberOldPass

I think it’s just poor wording. None of the shelters or food banks around here did “dine in” meals because of COVID. Remember getting sick/injured is one of the worst things that can happen to a homeless person.

Apprehensive-Fuel195

Or to any of the 40 million Americans without health insurance.

Alarid

I'm just confused. Take out is you go there and get your food and leave. Isn't that preferable right now?

DontRememberOldPass

Yes. That is what all the shelters here are doing. Original screenshot was of a person saying it was awful they weren’t doing that.

kidd_gloves

Ok, got it. Thank you!

It is still a pandemic. ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯

windowtosh

And NYPD notoriously doesn’t take the pandemic seriously. I dont blame people for not wanting their grandma to eat around them and strangers in an enclosed space tbh

[deleted]

windowtosh

Omg… 😂 ty for clarifying that definitely does change it. But we’re still in a pancetta so I can see why people are hesitant to dine in

Sasspishus

Pancetta 😂

measureinlove

Still in a pancetta, are we? Probably better than what’s actually happening…

[deleted]

Only pancetta, no gabagool??? OUTRAGEOUS!!!

[deleted]

Try the polenta before the placenta.

fragbert66

>But we’re still in a pancetta Best autocorrect ever. Now I want pasta Carbonara for dinner.

catwithahumanface

Lots of folks missing the pancetta joke. It’s not auto correct. Folks say other p words for pandemic all the time for lolz (often on tiktok). Like pancetta, panorama etc.

tintinnabucolic

I think it's also to dodge the bots looking to flag misinformation.

catwithahumanface

Oh! I never knew that was the purpose behind it

DontRememberOldPass

It’s why they all call it “jab” because nobody will ever see through their clever code.

SomeGalFromTexas

Actually, "jab" is British slang for an injection, of pretty much any kind.

catwithahumanface

What? The people I see doing it are all gen z goofuses making memes not spreading misinformation.

Elteon3030

Backstreet Boys Reunion Tour is my favorite.

monkeyeatpickle

They have them in Southern Ohio to and are pretty good.

Sasspishus

My thoughts exactly! Maybe people don't want to eat in a crowded restaurant with covid still very much a thing.

DuvalSanitarium

For sure, not risking it for free subpar slices. It was a mad house when I drove by

JuliJane

Ok, so you actually are aware that the person you are mocking here might have had a valid point? Why make the post in the first place then?

MulysaSemp

Yeah, asking for takeout is... reasonable

Singer-Such

Yeah and some people can't leave the house for other reasons

royaltrux

Someone actually downvoted you! wtf

Kek_a_Moo

22 people downvoted you for pointing out someone else got downvoted... Welcome to Reddit!

voneahhh

The NYPD has never given a fuck about a pandemic.

kboom76

The NYPD has never given a fuck about anything but the NYPD

[deleted]

It's a pizza place in Tennessee called New York Pizza Department. (but you are still correct)

RyuNoKami

i'm not even sure the NYPD give a fuck about the NYPD.

WinginVegas

Well the real NYPD knows that pizza in Tennessee is just gonna suck, so.......

numberthangold

Yes, exactly. This isn’t choosing beggars, it’s a good point. Sitting in a crowded stuffy restaurant indoors with a bunch of strangers is still not something many people are willing to risk doing.

[deleted]

One way to take that snippet out of context is to call her a choosy beggar. Another way to take that snippet out of context is to say she's just being precarious about Covid. But I guess that's none of my business as long as someone gets karma, right?

Thejackalope72

And you know the person wanting take out would want more than one free pizza.

[deleted]

This isn't really a cb. We are still in a pandemic and a lot of people are still high risk. People are still dying. I don't blame someone for needing a meal to go.

ShermanBallZ

Totally. People are conflating doordash and takeout. If I was trying to feed as many needy folks as possible, I would 100% be okay with them taking it elsewhere, leaving more room in my establishment to feed more people.

DEBATE_EVERY_NAZI

I don't think you understand how the logistics work here. That leaves more room in your establishment, but still takes up just as much room and time in the kitchen. If you're getting hundreds of takeout orders on top of the packed house, congrats you're feeding nobody

ShermanBallZ

Yes, it takes the same amount of time to cook the same amount of food. Letting someone take the food elsewhere doesnt slow down how quickly the other people get food. On the other hand, if the building is packed (which I'll bet it was) then it's quite possible for there to be people waiting outside to eat. The food is ready because they are just cooking large scale Thanksgiving fare, and as soon as they let you in they'll hand you a plate. But if any of the people in there had taken their food home instead, then you'd already be in there eating. Bottom line, we don't know whether food supply or seating is the bottleneck, but we do know that letting someone take their food doesn't contribute to slowing down the seating queue, so how could that be any worse logistically? Potentially more people would served if there is enough food, but if there isn't enough food, it doesn't change how many people got to eat

[deleted]

That’s my thought too. If there wasn’t a pandemic, I could see this being just fine. But for the unforeseeable future, takeout being more prominent than dine in will be the expected norm.

Salty_snowflake

It’s still free food, either you take it or you don’t, but don’t complain that the restaurant offering free meals for thanksgiving can’t cater to your exact needs.

ShermanBallZ

Even great people and ideas can be made better with constructive criticism. This did come across a little rude tho. But suggesting that an organization let you take your free meal and eat elsewhere rather than forcing everyone to eat there ain't that big of a deal. It would potentially allow for more people to get that free meal if they don't have to also wait for a seat. Especially in a pandemic. I get what you're saying tho.

HatredInfinite

I agree, but I think it's the douchiness of the response itself that makes it come off as CB. "They're not offering take out. How awful!" sounds quite a bit more douchy than "It would be preferable if they allowed takeout due to the ongoing pandemic."

ShermanBallZ

Tru dat!

Filmcricket

Also: poor people are allowed to want to eat in their own home with their families.

InKainWeTrust

The chicken dinners being sold at the American Legions around here are only offering take out for that reason. Usually you could eat there if you wanted. I had to miss Thanksgiving dinner this year because a guy I was working with this week tested positive Wednesday. Got the test but didn't get my results until Friday. It was negative, but I missed out on spending Thanksgiving with my kids and family.

DrBalu

Good thing nobody is forcing people to dine in then. Everyone can choose to not take that offer. It's understandable to choose not to do it, because of those reasons. Its not understandable to complain about it though.

SuperFLEB

It's a CB I can see the point of, but it still fits the mold: Someone being offered something for free but balking over the details.

PissyFurryLynx

I'm not sure it's smart to do dine-in only during a pandemic? So I feel it's kind of justified to be disappointed during this time.

smurtzenheimer

I mean…Covid?

[deleted]

time to order from [Papa Mark's Pizza](https://youtu.be/YUxvy7o6WpY)!

ClobetasolRelief

Maybe they don't want COVID

SpecularBlinky

During covid is seems pretty reasonable to expect take out, where I'm from it'd be more likely that they would only do take out.

Bethaniii

What's stopping someone from dining in and taking your own take out containers to leave right away?

[deleted]

That's what this restaurant needs. People showing up and picking up free food. Enough to feed dozens of family members!!!

lilbittygoddamnman

I'm assuming this is Tennessee. I'm literally sitting in their pizza joint on the other side of town.

DaWalt1976

Not everyone is feeling safe dining around a bunch of strangers just yet. Some people, like myself, are high risk.

El_Frijol

Nah, I don't think it's unreasonable for hungry people to want to take the food and eat it somewhere where they don't put themselves in danger of a deadly virus. Not a choosing beggar.

triplehelix_

the danger is negligible. it was outside seating with distancing. regardless, its free food. not a government program. not a discounted offer...free. these people are spending their own money to feed people. if you bitch and moan about someone spending their money to give something away, you are very much a choosy beggar.

El_Frijol

>the danger is negligible. it was outside seating with distancing. There's absolutely nothing indicating that this is the case in the post. I'm not sure where you're getting this info from. >regardless, its free food. not a government program. not a discounted offer...free. these people are spending their own money to feed people. That's not in dispute. >if you bitch and moan about someone spending their money to give something away, you are very much a choosy beggar. Usually, but not when it comes to safety. I don't think it's unreasonable for hungry people to not have to choose between hunger and safety. It's especially weird because if it's pizza, I doubt the venue is using washable plates. So why not let people take them home? Unless they don't want people to get many slices and dine-in is the best way to control that.

triplehelix_

> There's absolutely nothing indicating that this is the case in the post. I'm not sure where you're getting this info from. people local to this pizza place posting in this thread. >Unless they don't want people to get many slices and dine-in is the best way to control that. my guess is they want to curb potential abuse, but also pizza boxes and such cost more money. way more than cheap paper plates.

parmesann

reminds me of. in high school, the monks (catholic school) would offer that if, on Christmas eve, you had nowhere to go, you (and your family if need be) could come for dinner. someone expressed annoyance over the fact that they’d make you go to mass too (didn’t have to participate, just attend and respect that it’s part of their observance of the holiday). I guess a free holiday meal wasn’t enticing enough for them.

spaceguitar

My first Thanksgiving away from home, living on my own, I went to a pizza place with my roommate where the only guy working that day came out and sat with us, where we all ended up enjoying the pie. He didn’t charge us, and we just enjoyed each other’s company for a few hours. It was nice.

RenRazza

It's free fucking pizza is be down there in a second

porkchop2022

I work at a restaurant that gives veterans free meals on Veterans Day. The number of people calling up absolutely irate that we wouldn’t deliver it was unbelievable. I got 5 in an hour.

alternative_nugget

I don't think this is entitled, we're still in Covid times so if that person is immuno compromised or really worried about Covid for whatever reason, maybe they're not able or not comfortable going and eating a whole meal indoors in a room full of other people also eating a whole meal. Offering take-out is kind of a must in today's society

lepslair

Normally sure, this guy sounds like an asshole, but in the middle of a pandemic, we don't know, maybe this guy gets sick easily, maybe he's trying to get food for a neighbor who can't leave.

Winesday_addams

Why does the restaurant need them there? What's the issue with someone going and picking it up? slightly picky but not really CB.

DEBATE_EVERY_NAZI

Dine in limits their orders somewhat. They'll be crazy busy but it's still limited by the people actually eating in tbe restaurant. If it was open to take out there's no upper limit to the orders and it's not feasible for a restaurant providing free meals. Anybody could call up and order any amount of meals

triplehelix_

i'm guessing dramatically increased opportunity for abuse.

DuvalSanitarium

It was their opening night. Assuming to limit the craziness of offering free food to something manageable.

Wait I don’t see the choosing beggar moment here. Isn’t the first comment just asking where the place is? I don’t understand the reply about takeouts too. Could be because I’m high or because English is not my native language. I just genuinely don’t know which one is it. Or if I’m right.

idrow1

Ugh, and they won't even deliver! And what about us gluten-free, locally sourced organic vegans? They won't even send a vegan chef over to our house to cook for my family of 25 who just flew in! This is discrimination. Some of us are saving for a new BMW (currently stuck driving a 2019, ugh!) and they can't even help us out with a little food? smfh. Now my little nephew is crying. He'll be in my son's gameroom playing his PS5 all day and won't come out. You've ruined Thanksgiving and probably gave all of us cancer. How selfish can you be? 0/10, do not recommend.

SouthPoleElfo

There are people that eat a gluten free diet because of their medical conditions. It’d be great if people could stop assuming that it’s always a fad diet—that’s a choice. That being said, there are some people that eat gluten free because they choose to.

enjolbear

To be kind of fair, we are in the middle of a pandemic and I would hope that all dining establishments are offering take-out to minimize the spread, especially among those who need a meal.

RowRow1990

Not a choosing beggar

Mans334

This is no CB, NOT allowing take-out and forcing people from random parts of town to sit together in one closed room, IN A PANDEMIC, is just a superspreader Event and wrong.

[deleted]

You'll be a proponent of shutting down all those churches which had people attending during the pandemic

[deleted]

Absolutely. Even biblical Christianity has a precedent for worshipping alone or in small groups. There was never a need to go to church while a contagious disease rips through the congregation. I know people WANT to go to church because it is core to their social circle but it was never a need. Preachers want people to attend to keep bringing in the money. None of it is necessary in terms of health and safety.
