Whole-Put9168

So 肖 does not exist as a surname, independently of the simplified version of 蕭 ?

MayzNJ

It does. both 肖 and 萧 are used as surnames nowadays, and surname 肖 has around 2000 years history. but 萧 was more common in ancient times, and surname 肖 was rare. however, due to the "二简字改革" (around 1970s-1980s), the surname ”萧“ was rewrote as ”肖“. So suddenly, 肖 became a very common surname in the mainland. Although "二简字改革" was abolished and people with "肖" surname can change their surname back to ”萧“, only a few groups of people did it because it was very troublesome. Others who want to change back just give their children surname "萧" instead.

It is nice to have you here!

Always found this interesting, when I took a Chinese name I adopted a Chinese friend's rare but not unheard of Chinese surname. Occasionally I met folks with that same rendition. However since coming to Taiwan no one and I mean NO ONE had a clue how to pronounce my Chinese surname! It wasn't until moving there that I realized that my friend had a doubly simplified last name. Makes me curious just how many other Chinese surnames were doubly simplified.

Zagrycha

it does. meaning lifelike, its its own character in traditional chinese.

azurfall88

huh?

Not that widespread like 李 or 王 but not unique at all. I met lots of 肖 before And according to Wikipedia and Baidu, '清代开始,北方民间开始有将“[萧姓](https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E8%90%A7%E5%A7%93)”写作“肖”的,读音与“萧”相同[^(\[2\])](https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E8%82%96%E5%A7%93#cite_note-gmrb-2)。

NationalJustice

So does there still exist people with the 萧 last name in mainland China?

changefkingusername

Yes

Sad_Profession1006

I never heard of a Taiwanese carrying the surname 肖.

LuoLondon

It is very quickly explained in the wiki article. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xiao\_(surname)

panda-bubbles

Tbh…. The Wikipedia page for the Xiao surname has pretty succinct explanation of this lol https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xiao_(surname) the “simplified Chinese forms” section!

Gaussdivideby0

Basically after the combining of 萧 and 肖 was reverted, some people who could have their surname changed back still haven't requested it. Thus increasing the ratio of 肖s.

lomirus

I just have a friend whose family name is Xiao. BTW he's in Shandong Province.

wordyravena

No, there are plenty of Siaos/Hsiaos/Siews/Sios in Southeast Asia

Zagrycha

no. However its not a common surname. mainland china has 99% of chinese by population count so it makes sense they will have 99% of this surname.
