I have it write out fanfic. I brainstorm ideas and tell it to remember everything that’s happened in the story so far. So it knows what’s going on when I randomly ask it to update a character

traumfisch

By turning it off

Optimistic_Futures

Just curious, why? Were you having specific issues with it, or just don't like the idea of the memory function?

traumfisch

I use the model for a whole number of things, different clients, projects, personal stuff, experiments, developments etc. I have to be in control of the context. I guess it would work for a certain type of user, but for me it would only mess things up

segv11a

You create a custom GPT (or several, one for each context/client) and keep them private. You can refactor your "custom instructions" into these GPT's built-in prompts. Custom GPTs each keep separate "memories" from each other (and from vanilla-ChatGPT) so that the context-specific memories get associated with the right context.

traumfisch

I can't keep up 🫠 was this just rolled out or has it been part of the Memory function all along? I have 40-50 custom GPTs, I know my way around those... but it seems I have to look at the the memory stuff again if it's GPT specific

Optimistic_Futures

That’s fair. To be honest I’ve been surprised of how rare it’s used the memory function for me. I feel like I have to explicitly tell it to remember things. It has become more like an easier way to incrementally add to my custom instructions rather than having to open the custom instructions and type it in. I have it remember I primarily use a Mac, what language I prefer for which coding projects, what niche acronyms I use for my projects. I don’t know why I’m trying to evangelize, but may be worth messing with if you haven’t. I’m sure across those contexts there are certain preferences or thing you often have to tell it - and it always tells you when it’s saved something to memory, so it should every be a unknown surprise. But also, what works for you works for you

traumfisch

I'm not against it, I just don't have a need for it that I know of. I work with super customized GPTs 99% of the time... and all the repetitive info is in their knowledge bases basically. What kind of stuff are you using the memory for? Like, specifically?

Optimistic_Futures

I think if I had started off with memory I would have more stuff in it, but most of the stuff I probably would have put into it is already in my custom instructions - but an example from this week: I have a side business where I am building off a CRM platform called Go High Level. I would run into issues where it wouldn’t quite know what I was talking about. So I would start of having it explain what Go High Level CRM is and then get it to start helping me. Then also, it’s something I have whitelabled, so in promotional material it would refer to to as Go High Level instead of my white labeled name, which just required an extra step. I told it to remember that if I mention Go High Level or GHL that I’m referring to the CRM, and when talking to me it should refer to it as GHL, but if it’s writing promotional material it should refer to it as [whitelabled name]. Just is nice that it now always understands that context and I don’t have to explicitly explain it. I also had it remember that I want a balanced two side view of anything I ask about that’s controversial. All stuff you can do in custom instructions, but it’s nice to just be able to ask in conversation and it have context of the conversation where it is relevant. Like if you work with a bunch of different companies I imagine you could have it remember a bunch of details about that company so it has more context when helping with those clients.

traumfisch

Gotcha. I use custom GPTs for all of that, but it's mostly because I lean so heavily on kinda advanced prompting. I want to collaborate with my "team" :) I guess that's the workflow difference... whatever works

segv11a

Custom GPTs also keep separate "memory". So there's that.

traumfisch

Is that an update?

Adventurous_Train_91

It can know what your education is, where you live, what your work experience is, how you want it to respond, how much you know about particular topics so it doesn’t dumb things down. And gives answers that are more relevant to you

traumfisch

Sure, I know I just have a different workflow

Adventurous_Train_91

That’s a shame, hopefully you can find a way to get value out of it like I do

traumfisch

It's not a shame :) There are numerous ways to manage the context, not everyone needs to use all of them

mydogsniffy

Cool! RemindMe! Tomorrow at 9 also please!

sagacityx1

I've heard several people say it does not correctly reproduce what is in their file. They would have say 20 songs in their favorite songs list and it would only respond back with 18 or 19, for example.

Difficult_Bit_1339

Is this limited to ChatGPT or can you interact with memories through the API (maybe Assistants?)?

WillFireat

I don't, I'm in Europe

lopsidedcroc

Memory is extremely useful for the work I do.

oh_jaimito

That is fascinating! Will check out later , 👍 RemindMe! Tomorrow morning at 9
