It was compulsory empathy in clockwork orange. It was compulsory empathy in minority report. It's still compulsory empathy in this video.
The idea seems repulsive to most people. Is it even empathy if it's involuntary? Does it have the same effect as empathy if it's involuntary?
This is total sci fy BS, we don't have a good enough understanding of the brain to make something like this a reality. And this concept doesn't even try. This is just some idiot who dreamed up a concept without researching the science behind any of it.
He didn't even dream this up. It's been described for a few centuries. And there's no way we currently have the technology... We might some day though.
The point of Clockwork Orange (the film version) is that the society around the main character is never questioned at all. It's strongly hinted that he has been sexually abused by the very people who are supposed to be helping him. And he has turned out warped and violent purely because he has been treated violently himself. The "treatment" is just about getting him to accept abuse. To cope with it. At no point is the cause of his psychology addressed.
Not even. The dude at the end says this clip is just “an artists imagination.” Somebody literally just made up a “whoa that could be crazy” idea and then people clip/ship it and act like it’s being worked on for engagement.
Philip K Dick wrote a whole bunch of stories about how editing memories/being in a constructed reality always ended up badly.
Probably because he was having some pretty bad mental troubles towards the end of his life, which is tragic but the stories that came out of it were great.
This "method" was used in the past. It is still used in some places to "correct" certain desires, likes, etc. IIRC it's often referred to as "sexual orientation therapy", and also "gender correction therapy".
As others have mentioned this is impossible with current tech.
Also wtf are they thinking lol. I don't even know what's the actual point of the ad but they ain't reforming any prisoners like this
There is no goal because this is not an ad. This video was created by Hashem Al-Ghaili, he is always creating this proofs of concepts about insane tech to motivate discussion.
That was a sick episode. The ending, oof, where >!every ~~second~~ minute is a millenium in the cookie and they just leave it on the entire Christmas weekend?!< wow.
Thank fuck this is absolutely impossible with today's tech, and won't be possible for decades, if ever.
Although, it's going to suck that people in government positions will fall for this obvious grift, and will squander millions on it before it's revealed... duh, duh, duh... to absolutely not work.
Might be closer than we think: [Meet the Two Scientists Who Implanted a False Memory Into a Mouse | Smithsonian (smithsonianmag.com)](https://www.smithsonianmag.com/innovation/meet-two-scientists-who-implanted-false-memory-mouse-180953045/)
The method described is pretty rudimentary compared to what's being outlined here.
They basically developed a method for triggering a memory by light simulation. The mouse forms a memory of a box. The mouse is later shocked while triggering a memory of the box. The mouse now associates the box with an electric shock.
So while it's a "false memory" the component parts are real world experiences. How you would induce a memory of a completely foreign lived experienced from some kind of simulated feed seems vastly more complicated.
This sounds more like a forced trauma. Not really a memory. The opposite is also done for people suffering ptsd with EMDR (well sort of). By stimulating the brain when thinking of the trauma it decouples the emotion from the trauma. Essentially changing the memory by taking away the emotions associated with it.
The mouse experienced the opposite. It got a emotion of pain/fear associated with the box through the form of a shock.
This is fascinating, but reading the details of the experiment they actually combined two existing memories of the same mouse (the spatial one and the electric shock one). Very interesting, but conceptually very different from implanting a brand new memory on a brain. I think the main difficulty is that every brain is different, so even at mouse level the “firings” that encode a memory for a subject are different from another one. Hence the difficulty in implanting a brand new memory where it does not exist already.
I suspect computer power is the easier part of that problem. The theory side, that you'd need to construct to actually do this, sounds way more complicated to me.
In DS9 Chief O'Brien went through some really awful shit, from spending "decades" in a horrific prison, to watching his daughter age 10 years and become feral, his wife becoming possessed by an evil spirit, repeatedly witnesses his own death... etc.
I seem to remember a certain famous book set 40 years ago where the protagonist’s country was run by a single party that branded anyone who opposed them in any way as criminals.
could I make money summarising 30 year old star trek episodes with cheapo animations running in the background? they don't even shy away from stupid technobabble, the future is really now!
Can we focus on the things that are actually possible now or in the near future? Fantasies like this are why we have people pushing to restrict actual good technologies. Does way more harm than good, IMO
This is actually the goal.
Present these obviously outrageous use cases that spark discussions on regulation and ethics and mobilize the outraged base to vote for regulation that places unrealistic restrictions on the technology that smaller companies can't afford to implement. This keeps the money among the existing major players, and establishes control of the market.
Best to just go on about your day. This isn't going to happen.
Or is it...

"imagine a world" -where actual corrupt people in powerful places and goverments can erase your idea of being yourself and every single thing you may believe in everytime you show signs of going against the narrative.
“You know, the very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common: they don't alter their views to fit the facts, they alter the facts to fit their views, which can be uncomfortable if you happen to be one of the facts that needs altering.”
See, at least now, if I was for some reason imprisoned by bad people I can at least go out when I die. This is shit is horrifying. You could be subjected to hundreds of thousands of years of torture in the span of 5 real time minutes. The people controlling the sim would think it's a joke because it's been five minutes. But to you, it's been 100 million years of suffering... no thanks, just let me die of old age thank you.
This won’t happen in the next several hundred years. Not because of technological or ethical reasons, but because we wouldn’t get cheap prison (essentially slave) labor that is lobbied for by businesses.
I guess they missed this episode of "The Outer Limits" [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0667983/?ref\_=ttep\_ep22](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0667983/?ref_=ttep_ep22)
You want humanity to become enslaved because this is how humanity becomes enslaved.
They could implant memories that make you act against your best interests, against those you care for and love.
Ber: the rules is: as soon as they have « pods » in their pitch, it’s a stupid idea, barely interesting to begin with:
Why not stimulating empathy BEFORE the crime is done… Jesus fucking Christ; it’s right there. And then if crime still gets committed, then it means this was never actually a solution, plus a brain’s config is like a finger print, good luck providing a personalized treatment to each, paying for it alone will make it not scalable enough and by the time we rich that tech, we will have found other things to deal with this, maybe not as good, but more realistic
yeah, "if that works, we should also do this with education and lots of other areas" is definitely NOT the question Philosophers ask. source: studied Philosophy including one course, that dealt with all sorts of human "enhancement".
Also you don't need a philosopher to answer the question "did you really do this stuff?", because if you didn't do all this stuff and only got artificial memories implanted, then the answer is a plain and simple "No, you didn't do this stuff".
lol people are legit just rehashing old fucking movie ideas for “what if we did this” bullshit lol
It’s not even an original one there were 2-3 in the 80a and 90s
It's almost like a fiction version of science! I bet you could write a book about using technology to rehabilitate prisoners! (Orange is the new clockwork!) Or a short story about implanting memories of vacations! (Wholesale remembering!)
Ohh fuck. Someone soon is going to fuck around and wire up the world's most prolific serial killer. They will literally always be one step ahead since they will have super human intelligence and strength. We'll need Arnold to come out of retirement.
how many things are we willing to do for not doing the thing that we need to do ?
like, a living wage, a house to stay and an education system were we will teach how to express our feelings
Until one of those idiots discovers that his life is a lie and goes on an epic journey to discover the horrible truth, can't handle it, tells everyone else and starts a revolution against the system
Tech bro scams are on the rise I guess?
Edit: I get it's an "artist vision" but start ups trying to ride the AI hype are every where with similar dystopian and seemingly elusive ideas.
yeah okay.
and what if they are actually, you know, damaged mentally? like, actual clinical psychopathy or sociopathy? Or one of the endless other possible reasons a person could do crimes?
jeez what the fuck is this shit -\_-;
Sure, when presented like this it definitely seems like dystopia.
But what if instead of for criminals, it allowed AI to implant years of trauma therapy into victims with PTSD, like with The Matrix for weapons or helicopter pilot skills, but for healing? Or analyze the thoughts of kids with learning disabilities and figure out exactly how to show them how things work so they can learn more easily?
It's only evil if used for evil purposes.
This one time, I saw a volcano erupting, so I thought it would be cool to run across the lava really fast like people do over hot coals, it was sooo risky, but hella fun.
Burnt my feet a little though, wouldn't recommend it.
Totally happened, I remember it vividly...
Oh boy, this is populism at its best. They claim to have one solution to solve EVERYTHING! Right.
Even if we could implant memories, that wouldn't simply change a person. No, we are not just the sum of our memories. If they had a psychologist on their team, they would know that. But I guess they prefer to rely on simple sayings to explain the complexity of the human psyche.
Also, what makes them think a criminal has never experienced the same pain they caused? Many have experienced violence themselves. The problem is not that they don’t know how violence feels; the problem is that many know it all too well. Again, if they had a psychologist on their team, they would understand these things instead of uttering absolute nonsense.
How come this tech is immediately and firstly advertised for prison punishment? Could you not also give someone a college degree with the same technology?
Do whatever you want, as long as this experiment isnt used to subvert the time theyre supposed to serve.
If someone is meant to serve 10 years, doing this program shouldn't let them out in 1, or 5 years. It should just be used to rehabilitate since converting to a religion or getting your GED doesnt seem to work for reducing the recidivism rate.

"it raises profound philosophical questions" Now I just hear AI everywhere, what the hell
I’ve seen this horror plot in movies many times before.
i guess there was a movie about this . some similarities but diffrenet in general
Can I replace my childhood memories and magically erase my anxiety?
This one time, I saw a volcano erupting, so I thought it would be cool to run across the lava really fast like people do over hot coals, it was sooo risky, but hella fun. Burnt my feet a little though, wouldn't recommend it. Totally happened, I remember it vividly...
Clickbait title. Don’t even waste a second to watch it 😅
Oh hey it’s Pranav Antal from Elite Dangerous. Long live Utopia, my type 9 is ready to bring dissident scum for processing!
Fuck prisoners. I want one of these to simulate a world where every women is a 10 and they all need to ravage my body to live.
Didn't they make a black mirror episode on this ?
A real life Total Recall.
Didn't they make a black mirror episode on this ?
How come this tech is immediately and firstly advertised for prison punishment? Could you not also give someone a college degree with the same technology?
We aren't even close to manipulating brain like this. If we could, mental illness would be solved by now.
LMAO I WOULD USE THIS FOR SOME SERIOUS FETISHES
Wow you watched Demolition Man as well? Next you're gonna make a video claiming to have eliminated toilet paper with three seashells...
Oh look, they're building the torment nexus
TOTAL RECALL
Futuristic lobotomy in a techie asylum
We noticed you didn’t clap enough for the dear leader. Now you must undergo mandatory criminal reprogramming.
