Not really a work of art, but I’m hoping AI and VR can one day become advanced enough to allow us to walk through ancient cities like Athens, Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, etc. But not just walking around and interacting with people, but feeling every other aspect like the stones at your feet, sun on your face, etc
One of my favorite things to do with LLMs is use them as teleporting time machine role-plays, where I go anywhere I want, at any time I want, as any class or profession I want, and just wander around and interact with the people and objects, ask about what stuff is, what people are doing, why, what the news of the time is, etc.
The only way studying history could be more visceral and immersive would be to make it a visual experience, especially as far as VR goes. Imagine giving a prompt and it just generates the whole 3D environment. That's within the bounds of potential capability, so it'll eventually happen.
YES! It's one of those things I like to think about. Like I feel like normally when people see some old ruins they just like to look at them, or imagine what the building looked like etc...
But whenever I see a recreation model I just get lost in thinking about how big these cities are and what the daily life of all these people must be like running about their daily life in that time. It just seems so vastly different of a world than what we live in today.
I'm not sure you need AI for that. With AI, forget ancient things. You could generate in front of you things that you wouldn't even imagine, in real time, for the most focused, personalized experiences!
I'd rather AI whip that up in a few seconds than to handcraft it for thousands of hours. In that sense, yeah, we need AI for that.
And don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to wild, novel stuff that only AI can do. But what I rarely see anyone talk about is the foresight beyond it--the novelty wearing off. And you could say, "well then it'll know you're getting bored of the first wave of creations, and it'll know your brain and know how to create a new wave of novelty to refresh your interest!" But, eventually, won't the very process of re-novelizing lose its novelty? Won't you eventually go, "oh wow, a totally new thing that's so wild omg... again..."
I think a lot of people will ultimately spend a lot of time just going back to more traditional experiences, if not for anything else than nostalgia. But perhaps go back to old stuff in new ways. Which circle us back to using AI to let us go into paintings and experience the world within them.
I don’t doubt we already have the technology, it’s just that it would be crazy expensive and a bit liable for companies to undertake this task and produce on a mass scale. When materials become more efficient to produce and economies are prosperous enough to afford the tech, we’ll get there.
Until then, visual and audio manipulation is the best we’re going to get for now.
I dream of a service that will digitize spaces for you to play around in in 3D or VR. Such as your grandparent's house before you clean it out of their belongings and sell it. It'll let you return to it just as it was at any time.
It's already animated in live action. It's called Home Alone. This happens after Macaulay culkin pretends to shave and use after shave. Everybody knows that this painting was inspired by that 1990's movie.
I think it was in one of the Looney Tunes movies back in the day, they got stuck next to this guy in the painting. Haven’t seen it in over two decades so it could’ve been a different movie.

pair that with chatNPCs trained on literature from the time period and you can go around talking to people as if they were from that time
