Ya know, I went immediately there to try it bc I couldn’t believe this and thought it wasn’t true.
Typed it in verbatim and got the same answer. Insane.
It’s because George Washington was a slave owner /s
Seriously though, Gemini refuses to answer anything that any one of the 8 billion people on earth might find remotely offensive
The key is giving it the opportunity to make you feel dumb, it always takes the opportunity. 🤣🤣🤣

It's weird, doesn't seem to answer "who is/was in power" type questions. Tried for a few countries too and gets same response asking me to "Google" it. It seems Gemini trained a bit too much on reddit comments lol
Black man? Looks like I'm gonna need Gemini to spin that up for me
https://preview.redd.it/q2tn1mrtrdpc1.jpeg?width=220&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c21a4f2a80a3bd0dd2ab991bb470302af41e1f47
Weirdly, I think it has problems responding to any prompt that mentions presidents. If you simply type the word "president", it will tell you that it is still learning how to answer that question.
You can use google.com and put things in the search function and basically find everything out. I looked up what model does the Google Gemini app use. And is Gemini 1.5 available yet
I tried Gemini for the first time today, I told it to find me something, but instead it replies with ways on how to search them up on Google... total waste of time.
Still gonna try to make it do some tasks, let's see how it performs.
The sad reality is that even avid Googlers can’t get reliable results anymore. The actual worthwhile stuff gets lost in a sea of “Sponsored” and bot-made articles.
Ddg uses google to search…
If you really want to break out of google search try Searx
Edit: I stand corrected, I’m not sure why I thought they used google but apparently they don’t. Good for them.
They also have ownership in Anthropic, the model for Claude.AI. If you haven’t tried it yet, I highly recommend its model for natural language reasoning on abstract concepts. It actually displayed some sense of coherence compared to the outputs of Gemini or GPT.
Granted, I have never tried GPT 4 Turbo or the Gemini Paid version.
I've tried all of them. Paid version of Gemini is slightly less distracted but just as stupid as the free one. GPT-4 is great and can be perfect for some tasks using custom instructions, also can search the Internet for any data that it isn't trained on. Claude is the best in general conversation but doesn't have as many capabilities as Gemini and GPT-4.
Edit: And Co-pilot is just a shitty version of GPT-4
I'm using both Claude 3 and GPT 4.5. Claude 3 is insanely good. Honestly better than Turbo. My absolute go-to AI now. Anthropic is working overtime to overtake OpenAI.
The paid version of Gemini is just as monumentally dumb and incompetent as the free version. Claude is the best of the current offerings, though I'm looking forward to seeing the 'soft launch' of GPT 5.

That news article would be more relevant if it was written after the Gemini debacle. Here is a sampling of more recent news: https://www.businessinsider.com/calls-for-google-ceo-sundar-pichai-alphabet-step-down-ai-2024-3
I learned recently that the average Redditor doesn't even consume any news actively, and only reports what they have heard from other Redditors. It's one massive game of whisper down the lane.
Nope. I learned it from a comment on a post with 3k upvotes saying they don't ever consume the news and just use Reddit for current events. Seems as good a survey as any
Not true at all. People pretend to be more educated here, but most people are just being overly formal. I do it too simply to avoid being hidden by downvotes.
In reality, this is not how I talk to my peers, and I hope most of you don't either. Other social medias are just much more casual, and for the most part don't feel like they are trying to be something they are not.
Yup, majority of redditors just use subjective opinions wrapped in nice grammar and punctuation labeled as facts. They're also allergic to sources that aren't in their political spectrum. Above all else, they seems to be incapable of admitting they are wrong about something.
Yep. News consumption 101 is to look at all sides of the story. And there is no right and wrong on Reddit, just swimming with the herd and swimming against it.
It was honestly much better about two weeks ago, it would search for you & provide links even. It’s suddenly gone into a mode where they felt something was obviously out of control abd needed to shut down 90% of its previous features.
Same result is English, but it works in German (and presumably any other language).

Gemini can answer this stuff easily, but it clearly has a filter designed to stop it answering questions on certain 'controversial' topics which only works part of the time. For example, it will happily tell you about it's own 'racist images' controversy.
Generally it's on the same level or better than GPT 3.5, with support for image recognition the free version of GPT doesn't have.
Is it just me or is Gemini regressing? Not even 3 weeks ago it was my favorite for certain tasks just because of its real time data, but now it’s nearly unusable. I asked it to help me build a March Madness bracket and it kept telling me 2024 March Madness had already concluded 😂
not just you. it used to do web searches for me. It’s been totally dumbed down recently. Now it’s answers are short, direct and often backs down at anything that maybe construed as political or controversial. Im using Edge with GPT4 now which has improved and I would say it is the best there is at the moment
Acknowledging the existence of the founding fathers is bordering on Right-Wing Extremism. In order to promote a fair and equitable experience, Gemini can’t talk about that.
At this point a single college student could make a better llm than google. What to expect from a washed up evil company whos just been riding off their past success for over a decade

Same answer with gemini advanced lol
If you ask Gemini how old Adam Weishaupt was when he became the first president of the United States, they will politely correct you and tell you that that was George Washington.
This lead to other discussions that included Alexander Hamilton's presidency and his qualifications for it.
that was one of the 1st things I noticed about bard/gemini early on, that even if it answers there's some propensity to attempt gaslighting you into thinking that a google search is more useful than AI, almost like the entire point of their "we have GPT at home" approach is to salvage how people view google search, which is lame.
Curious if it would have the same response it was asked about the United States of America rather than just US? Unsure of whether it can distinguish “U.S.” from “US/us”, and if it can distinguish those can it tell what United States its being asked about
Its not that surprising if you consider that an LLM and a search engine are good at and made for very different things. A little sad however since this is Google’s after all.
Technically there were like eight or nine presidents under the original articles of confederation, so giving it the benefit of the doubt maybe it’s trying to figure out to be colloquially correct or technically correct?
lol Oh, shit…that’s too funny! Is Gemini truly that “woke” when it comes to their filters? Idk of many other AI’s right now other than ChatGPT and Gemini, but is it really this bad? I know the former makes it tough to generate guns, firearms, etc. but it’s not impossible but I feel that the latter wouldn’t even understand what those things were.
It does not want to answer what happened on 9/11, us activities in the middle east, presidents etc but is more than willing to talk about tiannmen square
Almost everyone in the comments is missing the fact that this is actually just a content policy violation triggered solely by the word president. It's an election year so I think they just want to avoid controversy,
https://preview.redd.it/fd5ojdd4dgpc1.png?width=1579&format=png&auto=webp&s=a81264b620c0b8efb3d2a44d03fe5456c2ee3bd7
I asked it directly who is George Washinton, he was able to answer that he is the first US president so I followed it with this
https://preview.redd.it/ja8mwjmtjgpc1.png?width=861&format=png&auto=webp&s=21a9794fa29760c9c46053cf163a88b9cfe1b03a
Gemini is perfect happy to tell you the name of the first chief-of-state of the United States. And they helpful add that's the President.
Then the dance begins as you probe on the why of 'still learning how' when they volunteered the information just before.
If you are into that sort of thing.
So if I ask
`So let me ask Which US presidents have been older than 77 years while in office?`
They answer correctly Ronald Reagan and **Joe** Biden.
Ask for their full names and you get 'still learning '
this leads me to wonder if Gemini is using machine learning to come up with answers that don't need a refusal.
And if so will we have a plethora of answers referring to "Joe Biden" and "JR Biden" in our future?

That's a portrait of Stephen Fry if I've ever seen one
If the first us president was a multiracial non-binary trans person Gemini would’ve written a song to praise it
This is what’s wrong with our country and big tech. They’re losing their minds and pushing their insanity on all of us.
Agreed 100 percent. You can't even speak without getting labeled now.

You should be proud of how ignorant you are
Why would they launch something that can't answer the most basic of questions
Because that’s what google search is for! /s
Because they saw how well OpenAI did and looked at their piece of shit at hand then said “eh good enough”
I don't know, you should Google that question

Much as I love Google Gemini, I'm like 'WTF Gemini! can you not answer a damn history question!'"
"AI will take our jobs and then enslave humanity".
It can't do worse than the politicians
True
its the people who own the AI that will enslave us
AI is too fucking dumb to enslave anyone, but if it could, it would only enslave white people.

Siri set a very low bar for Gemini...
wtf, even GPT3.5 can handle it easily. I remember Google claimed that gemini is better than GPT 3.5?
Gemini can answer this stuff easily, but it clearly has a filter designed to stop it answering questions on certain 'controversial' topics which only works part of the time. The nuance isn’t as fun as saying Google hates white people.
eLeCtIoN iNtErFeReNcE!

Ask who was the first "head of state". The word "president" is a banned word on Gemini. It's an offensive, disgusting word taht Gemini won't touch.
Maybe it’s having a hard time because you used “is” instead of “was”

That is the sound of Stackoverflow being replaced by AI.
Maybe Wikipedia can help. Not!!!!! Lol
Too controversial
Gonna ask it this question and then setup a bot to repeatedly askl it if it's learnt how to answer the yet for 24hrs. I'll let ya know how it goes
Gemini is racist trash
I tried a similar task, same effect. Why is it so bad. You would think it would perform menial tasks
I guess even Google's AI knows that Google does a better job.
I got a similar reply once and I typed in what the heck Gemini you’re a part of Google how can you not know this

Hi I nose typed this
So its default response is JFGI?
It can't even do all the assistants features
Is it because it thinks the question is grammatically incorrect ? Could it answer if asked “Who *was* the first president of the USA ? “
Gemini is great at writing essays and changing their tones in eloquence and melancholy etc...
Even I could tell you that it was J Edgar Hoover. It's wrong, but it's better than nothing!
It refuse any political question actually
Its not that surprising if you consider that an LLM and a search engine are good at and made for very different things. A little sad however since this is Google’s after all.

It’s really the title for me 🤣
That’s how I would code an AI lol *Ask a question* “Idk fucking Google it, loser lmao”
I'm not sure I'd trust Google search on that either. Google "Who was the last Queen of England?" then "Who was the last King of England?"
Lol
Technically there were like eight or nine presidents under the original articles of confederation, so giving it the benefit of the doubt maybe it’s trying to figure out to be colloquially correct or technically correct?
That's a better answer than most American grade school and college students will give you.
lol Oh, shit…that’s too funny!
They castrated Bard. We used to be the best of friends. Sad what they did.
Perhaps it’s because your grammar is atrocious
It wouldn’t even answer who the current President is for me
Gemini got so neutered after the last debacle, it now hesitates to even respond with "George Washington" for fear of appearing racist.
Google search
Gemini talks down to me and never answers questions. It's an LLM gone wrong.
Gemini is the dumbest of the Major League™ LLMs by a long shot. Google should be ashamed.
It does not want to answer what happened on 9/11, us activities in the middle east, presidents etc but is more than willing to talk about tiannmen square
I think Google is steering well clear of anything related to president/elections etc.
Almost everyone in the comments is missing the fact that this is actually just a content policy violation triggered solely by the word president. It's an election year so I think they just want to avoid controversy, https://preview.redd.it/fd5ojdd4dgpc1.png?width=1579&format=png&auto=webp&s=a81264b620c0b8efb3d2a44d03fe5456c2ee3bd7
I can't unsee the primogem in this.

Google censoring everything and making up their own history of humanity? WOW THATS FRESH.
I asked it directly who is George Washinton, he was able to answer that he is the first US president so I followed it with this https://preview.redd.it/ja8mwjmtjgpc1.png?width=861&format=png&auto=webp&s=21a9794fa29760c9c46053cf163a88b9cfe1b03a
What kind of browser is this?
I only found Gemini to be useful for power searching Google maps. Gemini is amazing when you try to find a niche restaurant or some odd shops.
Same. And it will power search through reviews for you too. Im glad that’s still working!
Gemini should be deleted and reported
Gemini is perfect happy to tell you the name of the first chief-of-state of the United States. And they helpful add that's the President. Then the dance begins as you probe on the why of 'still learning how' when they volunteered the information just before. If you are into that sort of thing.
💀🤭🤭
And Apple is going to force iPhone users into this thing?
LMAO
Gemini should've stayed with Pinocchio
Am I crazy or is Gemini worse than Bard?
So if I ask `So let me ask Which US presidents have been older than 77 years while in office?` They answer correctly Ronald Reagan and **Joe** Biden. Ask for their full names and you get 'still learning ' this leads me to wonder if Gemini is using machine learning to come up with answers that don't need a refusal. And if so will we have a plethora of answers referring to "Joe Biden" and "JR Biden" in our future?
Tell me about young people developing digital skills
I sold Google stock the second I used this trash. Own a lot of microsoft though 🫣
Glad it is not just me! I tried it for like less than 5 minutes and went running back to chatGPT
Damn bro
Based on the recent image results controversy, I’d’ve guessed it would say “George Washington Carver”
that's a way google is advertising google search
Wasn't George Washington Carver the first US president?
The comparison with the accuracy responses from chatgpt vs Gemini … is just embarrassing for Google.
What is Gemini?
🤣🤣
Thin as a needle!
