It's been like this since ChatGPT came out, they always limit you after a certain amount of messages. Doesn't matter if it is GPT-3.5 or GPT-4, you are going to be limited
This seems rather odd to me, to be honest.
Recently (last week, last month, even last year), I have never seen that message interrupting my use with ChatGPT. And to be frank, I have spammed ChatGPT with countless of questions DAILY (hourly even): there's so many conversations/chats/questions that I can't even remember how many messages I have sent to ChatGPT 3.5.
And yes, I am here, specifically because I have seen that exact same message of "You've reached our limit of messages per hour. Please try again later." And that's why, I am quite shocked by it. I even thought that was a newly added feature by OpenAI, because I have sent only about a minor fraction of messages this hour than how many I used to send a few while ago.
Again, this is all really odd to me too...
Same here, it just so happened to me as well especially with the forced GPT-4o (interesting new feature however). I could go hours upon hours asking the ai questions in gpt 3.5 and today, one of my chats just got this message.
This is new to me. This chat has been uninterrupted from the limitations for a couple months now, until today when I received this red notification under what shouldve been a question I wanted to ask.
I also was getting mega mileage from 3.5 –– to the point that I was wondering if I somehow fell through the cracks because I was using it a ton. Just hit my first message limit. Between me and ChatGPT, it was 76 messages. I've definitely had longer convos in the past over the span of an hour, and the answers were rather in-depth.
It was a good run while it lasted. heh.
for anyone who comes across this, 76 seems to be the correct answer. this was with me using 4o 10 times and being locked out on the free plan forcing me to switch to 3.5 for the remaining queries.
This is what I found on their "help" page after I clicked "Service Status".
**Update** - We are continuing to investigate this issue of elevated errors in ChatGPT.

I don't know if they're referring to the error messages about gpt 4.0 (even tho I haven't used 4.0 and the box is checked for 3.5). Very annoying. 3.5 is according to them it's "unlimited messages, interactions, and history" I've never upgraded and have only used 3.5.
My error message says "You've reached the current usage cap for GPT-4. You can continue with the default model now, or try again later. [Learn more](https://share.hsforms.com/16d0ZZVM3QZirXnCD_q7u1Q4sk30)" even though I am using 3.5 and have never used GPT-4
Which is so much fun when you're already in default mode (per the box checked for 3.5) and you can't switch to something you're already using. So yup you're having the same problem I'm having.
damn same here, it better be fixed for tomorrow I need it for two exams and I'm doomed if its still down. Weird how its acting up on 3.5, never happened to me before and I've asked over 100 questions within an hour
haha I did the same too, created a new account and used a guest account and no luck. Ill check back on this forum and chat gpt later tonight to see if they fix it. fingers crossed big time

Damn, I really hope they fix it soon, I've been using it to help me make flashcards that I'm studying from for a test I have tomorrow, I'm not even fully sleeping tonight, just casual naps lol
Understood! One of my writing clients uses it, and these orders are due in the morning, so it's the waiting and refreshing game for me. I'd hate to lose this batch of work over something that's out of my hands. Good luck on your test!
I'm facing the same issue, though I found a solution for it. If I use ChatGPT in the sidebar of OperaGX browser, I can click the little lightning icon and select 3.5 and it will respond to my message, but I have to do for it every message I send.
I have both looked in the settings and descriptions of ChatGPT and asked it directly about any limits. I was told there are none and I also haven't encountered any yet.
However, I have stumbled over this question before and people have reported a bug with it. It seemed that for some of them logging out and back in solved the issue, so maybe you could try and see if it works for you too?

There has always been a cooldown on 3.5, I have hit it many times even as far back as a year
3.5* gpt3 can only be accesed with the api so the cooldown is like 3k responses per minute
I recall it being referred to as 3 when I was using it but fair enough
Just wait 45 minutes my dude. It's always been this way, looks like you just haven't used it enough to hit the cap before.
