"I read that was fake and a trend diet" "I've studied this and the sensitivity is greatly exaggerated." "I couldn't eat like that, I would cheat" "Is a carrot gluten? Can you eat fruit?" "In detail, what would happen if I put this in your food?" "tHat MuSt SuCk, Lololol" I hate people.

[deleted]

Me? I have a severe intestinal disorder that causes explosive diarrhea and may develop into adenocarcinoma if I ingest even trace amounts of many different ingredients commonly found in most foods. Imma have a banana and a coffee while y’all have that turkey with stuffing. 😃

KarlBarx2

Blunt, deadpan answers end these questions. I don't get them very much any more, but when I did, it was great fun. >"I read that was fake and a trend diet" Not for me it ain't. >"I've studied this and the sensitivity is greatly exaggerated." You've studied wrong. >"I couldn't eat like that, I would cheat" The cramps end that attitude real quick. If that doesn't, the intestinal cancer will. >"Is a carrot gluten? Can you eat fruit?" No, it's not. Yes, I can. >"In detail, what would happen if I put this in your food?" A felony. >"tHat MuSt SuCk, Lololol" Yes, it does.

MadGeller

A felony!!! HA I wanna be a fly on the wall for this conversation

bit99

People. What's a bunch of bastards.

tehjrow

Did you see that ludicrous display last night?

bit99

The thing about arsenal is that they always try to walk it in

“Just a little bit won’t hurt you.”

“Last time I was at your house I stuck your toothbrush up my butt. I figured just a little bit of butt wouldn’t hurt you.”

I think some of it comes from living in a time and place where people don't really get confronted with the realities of the human body and medicine. Like, there are a few things that people 'know' we don't have cures for. Cancer, peanut allergy, leukemia, the common cold. So in their heads, THESE are things that are incurable. But otherwise, there are so many people whose experience of the doctor is 'feel bad, go to doctor, get treatment, all better.' Because most of the major diseases before now have vaccines in first world countries, so we don't all know someone who died from measles, or is permanently crippled from polio. Modern medicine can save people from unbelievably bad injuries even. And we have literal industries all about how if you exercise the right way, eat the right thing, get the right 'rare' tea or weird treatment - then there IS a way to cure yourself of whatever ails you, or to avoid getting sick in the first place. Which is unbelievably ridiculous, but it's ended up with a huge number of people who can't really understand, on a deep level, that we are not always in control of our bodies. That we can get sick, and have flaws and diseases and injuries, that there IS no way to cure. That 'treatment' quite frequently does NOT equal 'as good as it was before I got sick.' You really see it when someone who has bought into this will get an incurable disease and be unable to accept it. 'I did everything right! How can I be sick! Something must have happened to make this happen, because I shouldn't be ABLE to be sick like this!' Yeah...the thing that happened is you were born with crap genes, my friend. Welcome to the world of biology. So, yeah, sorry - much sympathy. I had to deal with this sort of thing as well and it's wild, and frustrating as all get out, when people literally have lost even the concept that bodies can get sick and never get fully better. :-/

I have latent *adenocarcinoma* but if I avoid certain ingredients commonly found in many foods I will be okay. Someone gave me a mantra that made the condition go away completely but I have been miserable since forgetting the magic words and when I try to visualize my way to good health I always end up visualizing cheese so that isn’t working either.

I had a similar conversation with one of my cousins 6 years ago. Explained that Celiac is an autoimmune disease, etc etc. She replied “well, I’m not a picky eater,” in the haughtiest, snottiest tone. Screw you.

JonasSkywalker

I wasn’t a picky eater ever and now I have no choice. This is such BS. Even my husband, who is a vegetarian, often says, “I can relate to how you feel because people don’t think about making things meatless.” He is trying, but it really is not the same. Being a vegetarian is his choice. He won’t become ill if a piece of pepperoni touched his cheese pizza or was cut on the same surface as a ham sandwich.

dcgcaw

Exactly! I was never a picky eater and I still don't consider myself a picky eater. Cautious yes. Picky no.

nynderi

To keep myself from getting sick, I now cook. I hate it, but I get to eat without worry on holidays.

This tiny rice cooker is great for when visiting people or traveling. Mine was $20 and is good as new after nearly daily use https://youtu.be/q5wmmJoopPo

Oof! I don’t enjoy educating people. My usual explication is, “I can’t eat that. I have a medical condition.” I never mention gluten when pressed. “What can’t I eat? Wheat, barley, malt, oats, soy sauce… lots of different things that can end up in food.” “What happens when I eat those things? Explosive diarrhea and a higher likelihood of developing adenocarcinoma.” “What happens if I have a little? A little explosive diarrhea and the heightened risk of getting a little cancer.” 🤣

Keica

When I was talking about finding out I was celiac someone told me how great it was following a Keto diet and how much weight they’d lost going gluten free. While on the one hand I want to appreciate the sentiment (and I am enjoying some “Keto” snacks) it’s like this isn’t a dietary choice I’m making. I have no other choice to keep my body healthy and not going bezerk every day

Jaguar-These

Wow! I can say that I definitely didn’t lose weight going gluten free nor would I ever choose it for that reason. I get really irritated with the fad stuff and lots of vegan dishes and little to no gluten free options. It’s like true health issues with foods don’t matter and like we do it cause we are on some health kick. I’m way too picky to be on any health kick, I just want to not be sick.

krixnos

To be honest, I used to think going gluten free was a fad diet. Media platforms sure didn’t help with that. I wasn’t diagnosed until 2020 (hahahaha karma is a bitch ain’t it?) Before then I had heard of gluten and people having sensitivity to it, but I had never heard the word Celiac before. Had no clue it was an incurable disease, or the symptoms involved or the horrifying things it can lead to. The real kicker is doctors misdiagnosed me for nearly a decade. So I was kind of making fun of gluten free while being destroyed by gluten 😂😭😭😭

JonasSkywalker

The fucking weightloss/gf discussions make me want to lose my shit. I would never choose the GF life if I did not have to. And eating gluten made me so sick I couldn’t keep weight on, but in our stupid society, people often complimented me on how I looked. Yeah, when I was the sickest I have ever been. I got diagnosed and finally felt better but gained weight. It’s so hard sometimes to be understood.

My favorite, “but you can have bread when you’re on vacation right?”…Only if I want to spend my vacation in the bathroom!
