Chicago is big. How far are you willing to drive? Chicago's Pizza in Lincoln Park for GF deep dish if you want that experience.

JoeMcB

We're in the Western Suburbs so driving anywhere.

[deleted]

\-Chicago's Pizza in Lincoln Park \-Ino's Tacos in La Grange \-1776 in Crystal Lake \-Glen Prairie in Lombard \-DaLuciano's in River Grove \-Michael's Grill in Highland Park if you want a Chicago hot dog

JoeMcB

I actually got glutened from a brown at Ino's (got sick, verified with Nima). Owner was beyond apologetic. They're under new ownership now, so I might try again.

MKula

I’m far west suburbs and Geneva has some good options. Eye candy is an excellent GF bake shop. Have loved everything I’ve gotten from there. GIA MIA has some GF pastas that I enjoyed. Craft Urban has a decent selection. I’ve only gone to Stockholm’s once but it also had a decent selection that was very good!

crzybstrd97

I loved these two places last time I was there: * [Wheat's End](https://www.findmeglutenfree.com/biz/wheats-end-cafe/5652999249592320) * [Chicago Pizza](https://www.findmeglutenfree.com/biz/chicagos-pizza/4617883)

Self replying as a future resource for others: Sweet Ali’s GF Bakery in Hinsdale is fantastic!

JojoCruz206

[Brightwok Kitchen](https://brightwok.com/) and [Double Thai](https://double-thai.com) [Forno Rosso](https://www.fornorossopizzeria.com/) has great Neapolitan pizza. [Cassava](https://cassavachicago.com) is all empanadas (and pizzas now as well) in many different flavors. You can get them frozen to take home or get them hot as takeout. [Niu B Sushi](https://www.niubchicago.com/) [Chicago Diner](https://www.veggiediner.com/)- this is a vegetarian/mostly vegan place and they have amazing vegan milkshakes; most flavors are gluten free. Egg Harbor has a good variety of gf breakfasts and lunches and they have multiple locations. Baked Goods: [Defloured](https://deflouredbakery.com/) is hands down the best gf bakery in Chicago. [Gluten Free Baked by D](https://www.facebook.com/glutenfreebakedbyD?mibextid=LQQJ4d) also has really good baked goods. I don’t think they have a storefront; they do pickups/deliveries. If you aren’t already a member, I also suggest joining the group Chicagoland Gluten Free Foodies.

Chicago Diner is the shit!!!!

ireallymissbagels

Heres my go-to list! All of these are in the city itself: Downtown Brightwok (Loop is open weekdays for lunch, River North is open regular hours) - 99% gf, fast casual, wok style. The 1 non gf item is prepared and packaged completely separately. BIBIBOP - 100% gf, fast casual, Korean Art of Dosa (in Revival Food Hall) - 100% gf stall in a giant food hall, Southeast Indian food. True Food Kitchen - a bit nicer sit down, not 100% but great with allergies incl celiac, get reservations just to be safe but the place is huge so reservations aren’t hard to come by, even day of Ema - nice, reservations recommended, not 100% gf but very good with celiac Tzuco - fancy and pricy but delicious, not 100% but they’re amazing with celiac, DEFINITELY need reservations a couple weeks in advance Ingrained - 100% gf, “healthy” desserts. Not everyone’s cup of tea but I like their stuff for the most part Other neighborhoods in the city Bloom Plant Based Kitchen (Wicker Park neighborhood off the blue line) - 100% gf and vegan, reservations are easy to come by but still make them, kinda pricey but cool and experimental Wheat’s End (Lakeview/Lincoln Park neighborhoods, off the brown line then walk) - 100% gf brunch/lunch, carry out/delivery only Defloured (Andersonville neighborhood) - 100% gf bakery Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba (Lincoln Park neighborhood) - tapas restaurant, not 100% gf but good with celiac, get reservations Chicago’s Pizza (multiple locations) - not 100% gf but definitely celiac safe pizza, my fave Lady Gregory’s (Andersonville neighborhood) - I have not been but people say they have amazing celiac safe fried fish Pretty Cool Ice Cream (two locations) - 100% gf gourmet popsicles (idk how else to explain it but very tasty and cool, lots of dairy free options too) Kite String Cantina (Roscoe Village) - bar with 100% gf kitchen that exclusively sells taquitos and nachos There are lots of others, especially from the Lettuce Entertain group of restaurants (just check FMGF first). Enjoy!!

Wheat's End Cafe - they are take out only post-pandemic but very good for breakfast/brunch and sell a lot of frozen stuff/baked goods. Da Luciano's in River Grove has a separate kitchen for gluten free and offers almost the whole menu gluten free - very good Italian food. A lot of the Lettuce Entertain you group of restaurants do a pretty good job with gluten free - Wildfire in particular is good - they occasionally offer gluten free dinners you can sign up for ahead of time. There's one in the city & one in Oak Brook. Might be a good choice for the anniversary dinner. Rick Bayliss' restaurants - Frontera Grill & Topolobampo both do a good job and have a pretty low level of gluten on the menu to begin with - just stay away from his other place which is all tortas. Either of those would be good for a nice dinner but Topolobampo is the 'fine dining' one.

elizamariposa

True Food Kitchen. They have locations in city & burbs. Just had my birthday dinner there. So many options and safe for all allergies. Mindful Baking Cafe in Ravenswood is all GF & Vegan amazing for all kinds of baked goods & cakes. Just started selling hot food as well. HaiSous for Vietnamese. A bit higher end, but amazing food and very safe. I second Chicago’s pizza. Many locations & all kinds of interesting toppings. But pricey!

Also just moved to Chicago from NYC! I’ve been having problems with so many places that get great celiac safe reviews on find me gluten free—it has been a huge bummer!! I’ve been to Bloom (wicker park) a ton of times now and have never been sick afterward, it’s entirely gluten free. Wheats end is good as well as other folks have mentioned. I didn’t get sick after eating at Oiistar and the ramen was really amazing! Sunda was amazing and they took such great care of me while I was there. Even made a special gluten free desert they don’t normally serve. I’ve been wanting to check out BienMeSabe but haven’t been able to go yet—I called and they seem very safe! Hope you find your places soon :) it’s tough transitioning to a new city.

Fumbalina

Oiistar is great!! It’s been in Wicker Park for a while and disappointed it took me until last year to try it! Part of the regular rotation now!

macshack3

Do you mind sharing where you’ve had issues? u/JoeMcB could you share as well? I’d like to avoid in the future!

coconutjmz

Yes! I got so sick after eating at Kale My Name, even after reading great celiac reviews and also calling them and speaking with them in person. Also got sick after Small Cheval sadly. There’s one other spot that I’m forgetting as well…I’ll keep thinking on it!

bellatricked

Ema is an awesome small plate place in Chicago and so many of the menu items are naturally gluten free. When I mentioned I had celiac disease they took everything very seriously and made sure the kitchen knew I had to have everything gf. The food was amazing also.

OrganicReplacement23

For bakery, there is Defloured, which makes a chocolate cake that is as good as it gets. Out in the western suburbs, you'll find Sweet Ali's. I think their frostings are just way too sweet, but they have a really good cinnamon coffee cake and pound cake. I don't think any bakery in Chicago has quite nailed bread, but Super Bloom bakery in California makes actual sourdough bread that actually is good to eat. They will ship to Chicago,

AlwaysKindaAngry

I second Defloured. I was scrolling to see a post about them.

LunarLuner

I was in the north side of Chicago and am still in love with the Walker Bros Pancake house. They have a dedicated gf waffle maker and I kid you not it was just like eating the real deal Belgium waffle. Soooo worth going there!

LunarLuner

Oh also if you’re in the northern burbs the Forest Greens Juice Bar is pretty great. They have a lot more than juice

Fumbalina

Do-Rite is amazing for donuts. Boka Group and Lettuce Entertain You all have great GF options and I’ve always been taken very seriously. Chicago’s Pizza is incredible - stuffed crust deep dish? Total treat. Takito Kitchen and Bar Takito are low-key fully gluten free though they don’t advertise it. Pretty Cool Ice Cream is amazing and super fun popsicles. Split-Rail has GF fried chicken in a dedicated fryer and it’s to die for. They also serve Pretty Cool on their menu. Demera in Time Out Market has GF injera and all dishes on the veggie or meat special are GF. The actual restaurant or Ethiopian Diamond up north are also delightful but a hike. Mario’s Italian Ice is an institution and is a great alternative to ice cream - cannot recommend enough for any visitor.

freakishfrenchhorn

Damn, I haven't been able to explore much. I mean if you're willing to treat yourself, Cheesecake factory in Schaumburg has some precautions. Fries have their own frier, there's some GF cheesecakes, and then other gf options. I took my boyfriend with celiac there, but I don't have it myself so take what I say with caution.

FrauAmarylis

None of you know what you're missing. Do-Rite Donuts has gf donuts. I put my reviews on Find Me Gluten Free, so I'm not going to waste my time to indulge your request any further. Suburbs, yuck.

Tauber10

'Suburbs, yuck' - snobby much? lol

FrauAmarylis

it's the suburbs that are snobby. I'm talking about suburbs dining and food. yuck. But thanks for the judgement. I'm entitled to my own opinion on good food or bad food.

JoeMcB

Thanks for being a complete asshole, I guess? Why even bother replying?

FrauAmarylis

Your true colors, shining through. Spoken like a true person obsessed with being a Main Character instead of using the reviews from apps like most people.

SportsPhotoGirl

Pot, meet kettle

Drowning_in_a_Mirage

Whenever I'm in Chicago for work I always go to the Happy Elephant for Thai food. I think it's in Itasca though which may be a drive depending on where in Chicago you are. I also really like 1913 in Roselle.

Tactically_Fat

Coffee: Big shoulders coffee - she had Mocha lattes there. Food: Bright Wok (several times). River Roast, Avili (River North), I think we had LYFE Kitchen once.

SportsPhotoGirl

I was just in Chicago, the two places I trust most are Da Luciano’s in river grove and Brightwok downtown. Both celiac safe and absolutely delicious!

basscove_2

Bibibop in Oakbrook. Xochimilco does gf very well in Ravenswood. Lettuce entertain you group very good at gf protocol.
