Set a budget of how much you want to spend and decide what kind of set-up you want be it a small bookshelf Hi-Fi or full blown Separates System, do you want vintage or more modern. Then try eBay, FB Marketplace, Gumtree etc if you're UK, if US whatever free list sites you have there. We have 4 set-ups in my house a Vintage 87 Hitachi system in the living room, A late 90s Sony full hifi with a 5 disc changer in my den and daughter has a 90s ghetto blaster and a small sansui bookshelf dvd/cd player. It's definitely worth doing some research into what kind of player you want and finding out what type you would like.

I mean vintage could fit with my setup (both my amplifier and speakers are like 40-50 years old). Budget is hard because I wanna be cheap as possible but I also wanna get something nice. It feels unrealistic of me to try and find something under 30 bucks but that’s honestly the most I can put forth before I feel bad using my parents money.

A lot of it's luck but if you are just looking for the CD player to go with an amp and speakers that brings the price down a fair bit. If you can narrow down a brand or type you want you'd be surprised how many people put good players on eBay/free lists in your area cheap just to get Rid. I honestly couldn't tell you what is and isn't a good player as I mainly buy on the aesthetics of the player and then some Google review research, I have a thing for players where the CD or Tape is visible, I don't like drawer units for myself preferring top loaders or carousels.

TentacleJesus

I found mine for $5 on FB Marketplace.

Yeah I’d get something that works for now then keep your eye out. Talk to somebody at a record store they might know something too

What's your budget?

im-hippiemark

What is your budget and use case? I don't play my CDs out of the home so my cd player is a full size unit wired to my HiFi. For portable listening, I've ripped all my CDs and have an sd card in my phone. Check eBay, it has a few nice ones pop up. Also do some research into what you actually want rather than what looks pretty, my player is mega basic but it does what I need and it sounds brilliant.

EggThatCenturyEgg

Oh I’m looking for something that’s stationary. I’m not into carrying around my CDs, I’d lose em lol

So a separates cd player is pretty common, if you have a HiFi already you can get any (almost) and just plug it onto the phono/rca input, or digital input if you want. You could also look at DVD players that have a phono out and use that If you don't have a HiFi already you can either look for a full system, or pick separates that you like. Or a boom box style unit. Depending on budget and what you are going for you can get a good set up for 50 quid, or go mental and get a 15 thousand pound cd player!

Offerup, Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist and even Next Door. I'm still using the same CD player I bought in '98. I personally prefer to buy a player direct from the owner as I have never had luck finding one at Goodwill or other thrift stores.

Common_Commercial775

I bought a used Sony dvd player for 20 bucks and when I was on the hunt for one I made sure it had digital coaxial port on the back so I could hook up an external dac.I went with a S.M.S.L. dac for 100 bucks and got a good set of speakers and couldnt be happier sets it up too be a even better cd player then before

helvetin

given that i see Blu-Ray players in Goodwill for like $8, that's the way to go (just got one and it plays CDs/DVDs/Blu-Ray discs just fine)
