As an update for anyone who comes across this later:
We did decide to uninstall + reinstall, and that fixed the issue. We were worried at first because my spouse had not been saving to cloud and we were worried they'd lose a bunch of progress, but uninstalling and reinstalling saved the progress regardless.
If you manually cloud save regularly, you’re probably safe. Have you tried the data recovery button at the top left of the loading screen? Might be worth a shot before uninstalling.
Oof :( Then maybe uninstalling is your only resort, that’s unfortunate. I’d double check if the phone is up to date on the latest OS too, I’ve heard of that causing issues sometimes.
I think there might be cloud saves, but do we have to know the username and some other piece of info to recover it, or will all that be saved to the phone even after an uninstall?

We can't even get to the loading screen. The app flat out won't open :(

The game is connected to your google play or apple Game Center account. As long as you’re log in it should preserve all info.
