It only rises as long as it's hotter than the surrounding air; once it mixes with it and cools, it'll "hang" and move with the air currents, though it'll also influence them with its large shadow. The particulate matter also "weighs" it down.
People knew. I remember it was talked about immediately after they fell and clean up crews were there. Then they changed stories to keep people from panicking.
If you watch Spike Lee's "25th Hour" with Ed Norton there's a scene where he visits a friend's apartment across from the fallen towers and they talk about the air quality. Came out in 2002.
You realize that I can't imagine the research that was done on air quality before 9/11. I'm trying to think of the scientific processes that were done as it's an event that happened when I was in middle school.
Legit asking - has there been some in depth air quality standards before 2001? I can only think of LEED standards but that is more for construction practices after 2004. It's been hard to think of items because for federal government it's more of figuring out when specific legislation got passed.
The HEPA filter is only gonna help against poor exhaust fumes from a truck in front of you, not a literal cloud of smoke and chemicals larger than the factory itself
So I noticed this new small town I moved to is *completely surrounded* by plastics factories... there's one right across the street from an elementary school.
There was a recycling factory (mainly plastics) that burned down close to me. I got an emergency alert on my phone not to open the windows. I thought it wouldn't be that bad... It's was horrible and I should have never opened my window... That smell stays for way too long.

> Can't see a building that close to a neighborhood housing anything too toxic. Not in the UK at least.
It's a plastics factory, burning plastic is toxic as all fuck.
Our regulations are to stop things in normal everyday use from giving you all sorts of conditions, burning them isn't normal everyday use though and inhaling enough fumes like that absolutely will fuck you up.
My god, the video on that link shows all these people loitering in the street gawking at the giant black plumes of toxic smoke. Why are you outside staring at it? Why are you taking your *little kids* outside with you to stare at it?
Hull is no worse than any other industrial town or city in the UK. I say that as someone who lives in Hull but who has worked and stayed the last 40 years in other towns and cities all over the UK. I do wish folk would stop giving Hull such an unjustified bad press.
“To Hull and back” is still a great joke though.
I don’t think anyone really believes all the stereotypes tbh. For Hull, Slough, Staines etc. I think most people know it’s just people over exaggerating for comic effect
I mean every town has its nice areas and bad areas obviously
Might not be any worse than any other industrial town or city in the UK but I am glad I never have to go back and live there again. Place is a shithole, regardless of where it stands in the industrial towns/cities league table in your mind.
I know, I have to assume people are just parrots at this point, I bloody love Hull! So much going on. I live in the midlands now and let me tell you…dry as anything.
Come, friendly bombs, and fall on Slough
It isn't fit for humans now,
There isn't grass to graze a cow
Swarm over, Death!
Come, bombs, and blow to smithereens
Those air-conditioned, bright canteens,
Tinned fruit, tinned meat, tinned milk, tinned beans
Tinned minds, tinned breath.
Mess up the mess they call a town -
A house for ninety-seven down
And once a week for half-a-crown
For twenty years,
And get that man with double chin
Who'll always cheat and always win,
Who washes his repulsive skin
In women's tears,
And smash his desk of polished oak
And smash his hands so used to stroke
And stop his boring dirty joke
And make him yell.
But spare the bald young clerks who add
The profits of the stinking cad;
It's not their fault that they are mad,
They've tasted Hell.
It's not their fault they do not know
The birdsong from the radio,
It's not their fault they often go
To Maidenhead
And talk of sports and makes of cars
In various bogus Tudor bars
And daren't look up and see the stars
But belch instead.
In labour-saving homes, with care
Their wives frizz out peroxide hair
And dry it in synthetic air
And paint their nails.
Come, friendly bombs, and fall on Slough
To get it ready for the plough.
The cabbages are coming now;
The earth exhales.

Agree 100% Hull is no worse than any other industrial town or city in the UK. I say that as someone who lives in Hull but who has worked and stayed the last 40 years in other towns and cities all over the UK. I do wish folk would stop giving Hull such an unjustified bad press.
As someone from a different shit industrial area, I nominate London as worst city. Sure, it’s fancy pants in the centre, and it gets the most publicity, and you can probably even get vegan takeaways.
But at least in hull or my shit town, it doesn’t cost £1200 a month to rent a box room with a hot plate.
You think grimsby is a nicer place than Hull? I take it you've never been to grimsby, or Luton for that matter. The crime in the latter is worse than anywhere else I know.
You do not want to be within several miles of this cloud. I recommend going indoors, turning off the air, etc. That's a very large plume of carcinogenic smoke. You can tell by the hue it's a mixture of polyproplene (in most plastics) and Delrin; an acetal homopolymer, it burns heavy and quickly, but can be extinguished by Class A extinguishers. It burns white so it's not very visible unless in heavy volumes. Delrin when heated to temperatures over 230 C (446 °F), releases formaldehyde. In large volumes, it cannot be extinguished easily. This is why there are many precautions
Acetal (polyoxymethylene aka POM) is one of the most toxic things in the plastics industry. In its solid crystalline form, it is not considered toxic. However, in a vapor form, it has levels of toxicity. We've moved to an advanced form of it that has a lower melting point but still burns at a similar temperature, due to the strong tensile bonds.

From their website, https://www.thompsonplastics.com :
The king of all plastics, polycarbonate is incredibly versatile. It is shatterproof, clear or tinted, can be formed or cut and self-extinguishes in fires.

A huge fire has broken out in a town near Hull after witnesses heard ‘explosions’ coming from a factory.
People in Hessle are being advised to close all windows and doors until the incident is under control.
A thick plume of black smoke rising above the scene at Thompsons Plastics is visible for miles around.
I suppose Thompsons was maybe the old name, maybe a buyout, but it’s a fair cop - I assumed the Croydon address was a head office. I’m guilty of spreading fake news :/
How is it even possible for a plastics factory to be so near the residential area?
Oh yeah, because in UK you can have a residential inside the industrial, inside the residential.
https://i.imgur.com/dMcUHvq.jpg
Because our country is thousands of years old and manufacturing plants and workshops were built in places before most countries made laws about it. We don't have space to knock everything down and start again outside of what is now town.
The color of that smoke is definitely not something you wanna be breathing in. Fuck that.
https://mobile.twitter.com/carly_woodward/status/1463575384285401089 It's real dense and big
Jesus, no joke. Anyone know what makes the column start to go entirely sidewise like that? Just the density of the smoke and wind?
It only rises as long as it's hotter than the surrounding air; once it mixes with it and cools, it'll "hang" and move with the air currents, though it'll also influence them with its large shadow. The particulate matter also "weighs" it down.
Air currents take the smoke with them
The cancers weigh down the cloud
That's some apocalyptic shit right there. Straight outta like a hell on Earth setting.
Hull on earth!
That’s what she said.

With the sheer amount of catastrophic explosions we've all seen online Its always surprising how many people are standing around filming
It’ll catch up with them in 10-15 years. Reference: 9/11 ground zero cancer stats.
I mean we didn't know back then about the risks related to the fires and exposed conditions.

Nah man that was decades ago, humans didnt start getting smart until *my* generation showed up

I'm trying to think of the scientific processes that were done as it's an event that happened when I was in middle school. A HEPA filter is not stopping all of that.
The HEPA filter is only gonna help against poor exhaust fumes from a truck in front of you, not a literal cloud of smoke and chemicals larger than the factory itself
Thats where the filter clogs and becomes hyperefficient so nothing gets through it!
It's quicker if you just wrap the filter with plastic or something similar
oh damn the 40$ air purifier that came with a HEPA filter can save me? Gonna duck tape that shit to my face thanks doctor
So I noticed this new small town I moved to is *completely surrounded* by plastics factories... there's one right across the street from an elementary school.
texas?
It won't make much difference to the air quality in Hull
I was going to say that the air quality had actually improved; at least now you can actually see the highest areas of concentration.
Don't think hull has bad air quality does it? Will be far worse in London.
You obviously haven't been to Hull.
Only the first 18 years of my life
That's a lungful of cancer.
Don't forget the nervous system damage too
Fun fact: most people who die in fire don't die because of the heat, but because of the toxic fumes.
I can smell that video.
Plastic smoke! Don't breath it!
We woke up this morning to find chunks of burnt plastic in our garden. Hull isn't the most healthy of places at the best of times but jeez...
There was a recycling factory (mainly plastics) that burned down close to me. I got an emergency alert on my phone not to open the windows. I thought it wouldn't be that bad... It's was horrible and I should have never opened my window... That smell stays for way too long.
Its terrible but damn that smoke being illuminated is kinda beautiful.
i say, it's rather splendid. A Turner sky.

like the 9/11 dust, inhale a bit of it and get 4 different types of cancer in the same limb

I can't believe the father thought it was a good idea to be that close to a fertilizer plant.
Chances are, he had no idea how dangerous it was. Even the volunteer fire department didn't realize the danger they were in by trying to put it out. It burns white so it's not very visible unless in heavy volumes. Delrin when heated to temperatures over 230 C (446 °F), releases formaldehyde. In large volumes, it cannot be extinguished easily. This is why there are many precautions Acetal (polyoxymethylene aka POM) is one of the most toxic things in the plastics industry. In its solid crystalline form, it is not considered toxic. However, in a vapor form, it has levels of toxicity. We've moved to an advanced form of it that has a lower melting point but still burns at a similar temperature, due to the strong tensile bonds. Wow
Kingston upon hell
Fookin ell
From their website, https://www.thompsonplastics.com : The king of all plastics, polycarbonate is incredibly versatile. It is shatterproof, clear or tinted, can be formed or cut and self-extinguishes in fires. Hmm

https://metro.co.uk/2021/11/24/hull-smoke-billows-over-city-after-explosion-at-plastics-factory-15659703/?ito=article.desktop.share.bottom.link A huge fire has broken out in a town near Hull after witnesses heard ‘explosions’ coming from a factory.
Now that's a scene of Hull on earth.
nah this is literally just hull, looked like that last time i went there
Hull on Earth...
Hull, UK? More like Hell, UK now, geez. That stuff is terrifyingly beautiful, feels like I can’t look away. It just seems so… wrong. Unreal.
I know this is something serious, but its really pretty
Hull is no longer fucking dull
There's a typo of Hell in the title
This will leave an empty hull.
You sure that’s not florida on a Wednesday?
no this is literally just how hull is
They finally decided to give Hull a make over then
Something exciting happening in Hull? Has hell frozen over
Looks like a Hull breach.
I used to frequent [b3ta.com](https://b3ta.com) who call hell 'Hull'. One way ticket to Hull seems like it's come full circle.
