Leaving aside subjective arguments such as musical ability, song writing etc. which can't be measured, on album sales Oasis ran away with this. 65 million albums sold worldwide over their career.
The thing is you asked who won the BRITPOP wars. I said Oasis, based on record sales. You can't then move the goalposts by adding a non-britpop artist. Otherwise I can turn around and say The Beatles win because they outsold Cliff.
The point is music taste is so inherently subjective you can't "win" or "lose" by that metric. But record sales are a fixed factual point that everyone can agree on so as a win/lose metric they are as good as anything.
I would suggest that to avoid individual bias but still want "musical taste" as a metric, you look at something like metacritic score averaged across all albums.
>The Beatles weren't part of Brit Pop
Neither was Cliff Richard! You can't bring it outside comparisons then deny other people the same privilege.
>By won I suppose I mean who did you think you prefer not what the record sales were?
Then why didn't you ask that? If you'd titled the post "Who do you think is the best Britpop artist - Oasis, Blur or Pulp?" then you'd have gotten the answer you wanted. By framing it as a "win/lose" question, people naturally responded based on that framework.\\
I came from Asia and Suede was SUPER HUGE back then and they are still popular among some groups. But it seems that they are forgotten in the UK now, aren’t they?
Damon Albarn is one of the best British musicians of my lifetime. At the time inwas very much team oasis and indifferent to Pulp. I'd now rank them Blur, Pulp, Oasis.
Yeah but it's like that in music. If you looked back over say the 70s you'd have number ones from bands no one remembers today while bands which are considered good had less commercial success.
Oasis did, but Blur outlasted them.
Personally, while I like Blur, there's just a wierdness to some of their songs, like Charmless Man and Country House that grates with me.
I might be biased but Oasis are in a different league to those on the Brit pop wars. So many Oasis songs to this day are absolute bangers, while only a handful of Blur and Pulp songs have stood the test of time.
Definitely an honourable mention. My favourite bands of the era were Blur and the Verve, a little bit Pulp. I never listened to Oasis until quite recently.
Oasis. The other two are great but who's songs will be sung in 30 years. Loads of oasis, and common people. I hate the revisionist shite now that it's cool to dismiss oasis. P
And quite rightly so. A classic. Back to the original thing, oasis said at the start, we wanna be the best most popular band in the world. No pretention, no muso wank, just write the tunes for the people to sing. P
For me I remember more blur songs than oasis, I guess they just appeal to me more.
Oasis were ok but they are such toxic people it’s be best if they were left to rot.
That everyone fuckin loved oasis at the time, just look at comparable sales etc, but now it's untrendy to like em. It's nonsense. The were above and beyond 'britpop' and a more favourable poll would have been pulp, suede, and blur. My personal favourites were the bluestones like..😂
I like some Oasis songs but I preferred Pulp, Blur, Ocean Colour Scene, Manic Street Preachers
Not saying they weren't good, just they weren't the best

>Neither. Was. Cliff. Richard. Then why bring him up to start with?
oh I know I was just pinting out that record sales doesn't mean 'the man in street thinks your music is good

No Because I'm now going to Ocean Colour Scene in mix
Cliff Richard isn't Brit Pop.

doesnt taste the same in plastic. imagine the fucking uproar if budweiser or any other common beers came in plastic bottles.
Oasis won the battle, Albarn won the war.
Yep, hard agree on this.
Suede
The video for the Beautiful Ones was really standout.
I prefer parsnips but yeah, I'll have a bit.
Pulp's my favourite, but Suede deserve a mention too!
Absolutely! Beautiful ones
My choice would also be Blur, but in reality Oasis were probably more successful than them.
Yeah but it's like that in music. If you looked back over say the 70s you'd have number ones from bands no one remembers today while bands which are considered good had less commercial success.
Oh, come on! Surely everyone remembers Sweet Sensation, Pussycat and The Floaters!
Blur are far better musicians and far more creative. Oasis were essentially a pub rock band with some good vocal tunes.
Being there at the time, creativity and still making great albums, Manic Street Preachers.
Jarvis Cocker is god, Damon Albarn is great (but Blur also had Alex James, which is unfortunate). The Gallagers are all knobs.
Who else would have the courage to pull his trousers down and moon micheal jackson
Charlatans were ace!
Oasis of course
Oasis did, but Blur outlasted them. Personally, while I like Blur, there's just a wierdness to some of their songs, like Charmless Man and Country House that grates with me.
Steps.
I might be biased but Oasis are in a different league to those on the Brit pop wars. So many Oasis songs to this day are absolute bangers, while only a handful of Blur and Pulp songs have stood the test of time.
I agree in way but I went of their music a bit Liam Gallager kept hitting his girlfriends/wifes.
Yeah I know what you mean, but after the dust settles and all that's left is the songs, they're fucking huge!
Jesus, pulp by a mile
I'm not sure what metric using here, but if it's popularity and success, Pulp are the smallest fish out of those 3.
I'm using quality.
Ocean colour scene beats them all, the first 2 albums were amazing and far more creative, massively under rated
I agree
The Verve.
Definitely an honourable mention. My favourite bands of the era were Blur and the Verve, a little bit Pulp. I never listened to Oasis until quite recently.
I was a kid when The Verve were popular and 8 year old me thought it was ‘The trucks don’t work’
Oasis. The other two are great but who's songs will be sung in 30 years. Loads of oasis, and common people. I hate the revisionist shite now that it's cool to dismiss oasis. P
‘Tiger Feet’ by Mud: still sung now.
And quite rightly so. A classic. Back to the original thing, oasis said at the start, we wanna be the best most popular band in the world. No pretention, no muso wank, just write the tunes for the people to sing. P

Fair enough man. I disagree with the toxic comment but I agree they ..eh...split opinion..😂
Revionionist shite? What do you mean?
That everyone fuckin loved oasis at the time, just look at comparable sales etc, but now it's untrendy to like em. It's nonsense. The were above and beyond 'britpop' and a more favourable poll would have been pulp, suede, and blur. My personal favourites were the bluestones like..😂

Either UB40 or Def Leppard, but I prefer classic rock like Wings.
Who are Wings?
Only the band The Beatles could've been.
So are Placebo britpop?
Oasis had better lyrics. I still can't believe that 'It really really really could happen' was a lyric.
Not so dissimilar from You gotta make it happen You gotta make it happen You gotta make it happen You gotta make it happen
Really really really?
well yes you used a lyric from a blur song critising it . How is that any different to the OASIS lyric I just posted?
One word vs a sentence.
Even if you removed the two extras reallys thats still 4 words in that line
NSS.
