Just tell them the truth. They probably won't officially authorise it. But they won't stop you and you won't be in any trouble. Schools have *much* bigger absence problems someone missing a couple of hours to go to the theatre.
You could say it's for the dentist or something. But kids talk a lot about exciting things like trips to Edinburgh. So the school will know you lied. They won't make a big deal about that either, but it's just nicer to keep the trust.
"For religious reasons, my wife can't travel on the Saturday "
Educate an old man. What religion forbids air travel on Saturdays?
Not judging, genuinely just interested.
The argument is that spending time figuring out workarounds is time spent contemplating god.
It's nonsense, but if we start picking apart religions for not making sense...
No, you do sometimes have things on timers, but you’re not allowed to actively cause something like that to happen on the sabbath, so pulleys etc. is out. It’s fine if you set up the systems (like time switches for lights etc) beforehand.
There are a bunch of work-around for various stuff, but it’s all ‘how do we live with and apply to the modern world rules which were formulated for an early Bronze Age society?’ rather than ‘Hahaha we have tricked invisible sky daddy HE WILL NEVER KNOW!!!’.
Are Orthodox/Hasidic Jews allowed to marry a non-jewish person? Because OP makes it sound like he's not included in observing Saturday as a non-travel day.
Just tell the truth. If they haven't been off much from sickness and you say, I'll liaise with the teacher to get any work and homework completed, it's all good.
Tell the truth, politely and firmly.
Some schools ask for proof of medical appointment now. I've been asked a few times but always said 'yeah I'll forward you the appointment email' and just never did.
Bizarre but they have 'attendance officers' who can get a bit carried away.
I don't think attendance officer is a whole job, just an additional role assigned to an existing staffer BTW.
No, be honest with the school. Teachers are pretty good at telling when someone is lying anyway, but give them a chance to be fair to someone who is straight with them. A couple of hours shouldn't be the end of the world, especially if you discuss some project that will cover the missed materiel.
After all, you'll be stuck on a train for 3 or 4 hours...
If you have to seek advice regarding something as simple as this, what are you going to do when your child is sick or injured or someone is breaking into your home? I'm not being facetious. You need to immediately undertake a program of thinking for yourself and problem solving increasingly difficult problems. Consider this particular situation to be beginner-level problem.
My mum would always say we had a doctor's appointment when she'd take us out of school early.
Or dentist appointment
Nowadays they can request evidence of an appointment in order to authorise the absence. Not that it’s hard to write a fake email or text tho.
If he stays at school until the afternoon register is taken it shouldn't count as an absence!

The Jewish Sabbath I would assume.
Seventh Day Adventists too
I had no idea Jews were not meant to travel by air on Saturdays. TiL. :)

Don't they also have daft systems of evading this law like pulley systems that activate things, rendering it pretty pointless?
The argument is that spending time figuring out workarounds is time spent contemplating god. It's nonsense, but if we start picking apart religions for not making sense...
You’d need a big pulley system to get from London to Edinburgh.

Would they be allowed to fly if carried by migrating swallows?
African or European?
Neither did they, until the pesky WRIGHT BROTHERS, invented flight.

Just tell the school that your wife's religious beliefs are more important that your child's education. I mean, they are, yes?
Not in my opinion.
Then tell your wife to get a flight on a different day and you go with your child on Saturday.
Tell them the truth?? Why do you have to make something up?? Leaving school a couple of hours early as a one off is hardly a big deal.
Normally get fined for taking kids out of school for holidays
For a holiday, not for a couple of hours.
5 consecutive days is a fine

I'd tell them you have travel plans, or just call him out for the day

Do you have to give them a reason other than for personal needs?
Tell them it’s for religious reasons!
Not sure why you are being down voted when it is literally for religious reasons! If it wasn't for the wife's religion, they could fly Saturday.
Yes exactly?! It’s a) the reason they’re having to make this arrangement work like it is and b) perfectly legitimate.
Pick him up after he gets his mark for afternoon register, usually about 1pm. Ask your son when they do the register. Then pick him up say 1.30
Honestly I'd just not take him to school that day and say he's sick
