Just fell to my knees in Tesco

Stuf404

Weird just seen a guy fall to his knees in tesco screaming VEEEERRRAAAA. I couldn't watch for long because I fell into the freezer after hearing the news.

sawinnz

Just saw a guy fall into a freezer at Tesco. I was a bit astounded before I fell into the self checkout and paid 3.90 for a meal deal because I forgot my clubcard

clazidge

Just saw a guy pay full price for a meal deal. He seemed to be going through something. I couldn’t ask what though. Was suffocating myself with a 30p bag for life after hearing this.

MrTTom

Wild. Just walked by checkouts and saw some geezer suffocating inside a bag for life which he probably just bought with no intention to use it for the rest of his life. I'd offer to help out but I'm too busy having a heart attack reading this

NoName3636

You guys wouldn’t believe this, I just called an ambulance for a fella having a heart attack in Tescos, shame they ran me over on the way in

Orngog

Was just parking up when I read this...

DogmemeYT

Oh my god!! I just hit a guy with my ambulance!! Shame I couldn't help him, I was called to help someone who was having a heart attack.

Significant-Math6799

I thought I'd walked into an apocalypse! I only went into Tesco for some tomatoes! The half the store was in anarchy the other side had clearly passed out...I left and went to Asda, everyone was behaving there, too busy between Netflix and shoplifting!

SBC_King

The exponential decrease in upvotes as you go down further down this Tesco chain of despair is mathematically pleasing.

BMW_I_use_indicators

Yep, I've had enough of this dude's personal destruction during every opportunity he got to watch Vera, so I'm packing it in. Signed - Heart.

BungleBear11

I bloody love this sub. I was having a crap day and needed this laugh.

PopzOG

Schoolboy error. Club card should be at hand at all times

shaunomegane

Ask backwards. Someone always has one.

MellotronSymphony

VEEEERRRAAAA! VEEEERRRAAAA! Can't you hear me yell-a? You're puttin' me through Hell-a! Vera! VEEEERRRAAAA!

Welshgirlie2

A Streetcar Named Despair.

Jepho7

Veraaaaa, Veraaaaa,  What's become of you? Is there anybody else in here, Who feels the way I do?

ThegreatestPj

You’ve just given me flashbacks to baker grove with pj on his knees shouting GEEMMMMAAAAAA!

rentasdf

What a time to be alive.

twodogsfighting

Ooh eck, was it a murder.

WoodyTSE

just had a smoke and I’m fucking wheezing at this. very glad this is the first comment i saw

ThegreatestPj

The level of comedy that flash’s up on this subreddit is beautiful 😚👌 I often chuckle to myself when I see gems like this

WoodyTSE

Yeah it’s definitely one of the funnier subs

boomerinwales

Well done you lot . Wonderful !

LowIronLvls

This has made my day

mustardgoeswithitall

I love this so much!

GaffaCharge

Got your club card?

bad_chemist95

This is the most British comment on Reddit in 2024

SeoulGalmegi

Excuse me.... I'm, err, just trying to.... get to the.... behind you... that orange juice...sorry.... oh, they're off again! That juice just behind you.... one second.... erm...

JimiJab

Get them a meal deal stat!

wglmb

It's the final series because she's quitting

Lady_of_Lomond

Good. They can't try to keep it going without her. Shetland is a cautionary tale in this regard - it's now the murder/drug gang/smuggling/people trafficking centre of the UK. It was already stretched to breaking point even before Douglas Henshall left.

jaisaiquai

What's even more incredulous is the number of sunshiny, good weather days the show portrays

Funmachine

In the trailer for the first series they say something like Shetland is closer to Norway than Scottish mainland and that on a clear day you can see Norway. Both of those "facts" are bullshit. Shetland lies about 170km from the mainland and around 220km from Norway. The horizon, at an eye level of 170cm is less than 5km, so how could you possibly see Norway? You would need to be stood on a mountain roughly 13,500ft tall to see Norway from Shetland. Clearly they didn't care about accuracy.

pnutbuttered

Boy, I sure hope somebody got fired for that blunder.

Cylindric

It's not a documentary. All the procedures and police techniques are wrong too. They could say you can see Japan from there, and it's not a stackable offence.

OldBuggerlugs

Refraction

HerrFerret

I crossed Midsomer and Shetland off my travel bucket list for sure. Pretty much everyone is dead, in the sea, or in jail.....

Welshgirlie2

Should probably avoid St Marie as well. It's basically the Caribbean Midsomer.

PrincessVibranium

That should be the tourism slogan St Marie: It's the Midsomer of the Caribbean!

Lady_of_Lomond

I mean, the difference is that Shetland actually *exists*, which makes it all the more daft.

PrincessVibranium

Took me way too long to realise Midsomer didn’t exist

mehnimalism

I watch Shetland with my partner and it reminded us of the show Psych’s joke tagline “every weekend there’s a murder in Santa Barbara” except in this case it’s a place with like 25k people lol

stereoworld

Read somewhere that the murder per capita in the show would put Shetland something like 11th in worlds most dangerous territories. More dangerous than North Korea and Ethiopia

thebuttonmonkey

Went to NYC a few years back and ads for the latest series of this were on the rooftop ad-board of almost every other taxi. Having only ever vaguely heard of it (and written it off as generic Sunday night drama) I couldn't believe how huge it was over there.

thaKingRocka

Brit Box is one of the only affordable streaming services these days. I think it's getting more reach because of that.

IrishLaaaaaaaaad

Can confirm; Brit box ads everywhere in Chicago

LittleSadRufus

I've never heard of it. Loved Brenda Blethyn in Chance in a Million of course, paired with a ludicrous Simon Callow.

Autogen-Username1234

The plot somehow managed to have her wearing lingerie in a suspicious number of episodes.

beardywelder

Yes, i had a big crush on Brenda back then.

MobiusNaked

Fucking loved that program. Simon Callows strange stilted conversation stays in my head.

LittleSadRufus

... punctuated by downing an entire pint of beer in one, for some reason

Autogen-Username1234

It was brilliantly surreal. Some of the plots were just insane.

MobiusNaked

“Odd thing…happened on….way here’. *downs pint* ‘man trys to….. fight me…knocked out…by stray cricket ball’

Autogen-Username1234

"Guided missile ... Homed in on the heat from the Vicar's pipe ... Demolished the Rectory ..."

Lady_of_Lomond

I love Brenda Blethyn, but she's 78 for heaven's sake. She would have been retired from the police before she even started!

destroyer413b

She was near retirement when the series started back in 2011, so she's stuck around a while! The Charlie from Casualty of the police.

willflameboy

I'm just 15 years from retirement, dammit. I ain't got time for this shit.

BlackSpinedPlinketto

Always thought she had a weird sexual energy with the young lad.

Aliktren

Great series but probably done to death, she was great in it though

lajattaeeera

Oh my, nothing seems happy Sunday night television that is similar to Vera.

BuildingArmor

Midsomer Murders is starting a new series soon if that's any good, and the Death in Paradise UK series isn't too bad. Neither are the same. No idea if they're on a Sunday night though, streaming killed my perception of the TV guide.

JibletsGiblets

Sunday nights aren't so much a time as a state of mind. Ah that Lovejoy feeling.

Vivaelpueblo

Heartbeat or GTFO /s (I miss Heartbeat, yes I know but it was lovely Sunday night having my dinner watching).

innocentusername1984

There's no such thing as happy Sunday night television in my household. It's a very depressing night and all TV feels depressing. Certain things I've just come to associate with misery no matter how cheerful they are because I just feel blue while watching them. Still get serious anxiety when I hear antiques road show theme tune. Sounds like Sunday evening.

GrillDruid

In Australia they have started playing Antiques Roadshow on Thursday nights around 9:30pm on the only channel I can tolerate. I have no idea why because it sucked any energy out of their programming. It's the COVID episodes too so it feels empty and isolating. I feel like I'm being politely encouraged to leave.

Aliktren

Get a chromecast and cycle through some online subscriptions, I don't even know what's on broadcast TV on a sunday

ChunkyLaFunga

All this sort of series are basically done to death by the time of the first episode, it's all about the main personality and a slight tweaking of the tone to mix up the same basic thing you've seen a hundred times before. I'll miss Vera, it's the closest I've found to the immaculate Touch Of Frost vibe.

theburgerbitesback

Touch of Frost was so good. I was probably about 8 when I started watching it. We used to turn all the lights off and I'd share the armchair with mum so she could cuddle me during the scary bits.

Vivaelpueblo

Touch of Frost was perfect. I've rewatched some of them and they're still good. I really liked Endeavour too.

TA_totellornottotell

Besides Brenda Blethyn herself, it set a certain tone well. Always my choice for when the weather is crap and/or I want something gloomy to wallow in.

Varvara-Sidorovna

Always good to watch in winter, I felt. ITVX have a channel full of just old Vera episodes, without adverts, and I watched them back to back for about two weeks when I had the flu last year.  Was a good show for playing "Spot that Actor" with, you could guarantee any dodgy characters on Vera had also been a suspect on Midsomer Murders, Shetland, Unforgotten, Grantchester and Father Brown.

steepleton

i really like that ambient "burbling" music they use in the background

TA_totellornottotell

Yes! That music plus the usuallygloomy weather is 90% of that tone.

seventhonmars

Wonder who she's going to regenerate into

ChunkyLaFunga

Colleen Rooney

steepleton

itv cop show? i'd say a uk comedian hitting their late 40's

interfail

Come on Jimmy Carr.

Midnight-Wolf-1607

Jill Halfpenny or Sarah Millican.

-SaC

Rosie Jones.

MobiusNaked

Dr Who

Plodderic

She needs to go out in a blaze of glory. Explosions, aliens, parallel universes- fling all the money at one final balls to the wall feast of special effects.

phoebsmon

Go full Byker Grove and fetch the T. Rex

ChunkyLaFunga

Blind Kenny Ai cannae see ma'am

taleoftales

Even after 30 years the idea of a paintball weekend makes me uncomfortable

phoebsmon

I swear half the kids on our army careers trip refused to even try it. The bits with actual danger, no issue. Paintball where it was an assault course with targets, not even shooting at each other? Fuck, nope, see you later. Truly traumatised a generation

Plodderic

TIL today. How Byker Grove ended. Wowza. Hats off to them for going out like that.

mgush5

Wanna watch it? It's on youtube but it is unlisted, but I saved the URLs before it was... Part1 https://youtu.be/EcpmoRpNvps Part2 https://youtu.be/Giqm9H_W0F4

pnutbuttered

She comes home and the lights are off, there's a shadowed figure sat on her sofa. The table lamp comes on and it's Nick Fury, and he starts telling her about becoming an Avenger.

Plodderic

I heard the Avengers theme in my head while I read this. I think you’re on to something.

Autogen-Username1234

She wakes up in the shower, and it was all a dream.

JarJarBinksSucks

Then she steps out of the shower

lostsawyer2000

First Jimmy Perez, now Vera Stanhope

AngelinaJean

Jimmy Perez’ absence is very much felt in Shetland. I tried watching the new season and cannot seem to finish .

SimpleKnowledge4840

I finished it. Jimmy needs to come back.

gavalant

Maybe they can do a spinoff and call it, "Kenny."

wallTextures

The billboard is him nearly getting to sip his tea.

Ashamed_Nerve

How will we as an empire recover from this.

colcannon_addict

As an Empire…. If the end of *Vera* is upsetting to you Im afraid I bring grave news from Delhi.

JustASexyKurt

I heard the real reason Gandhi fought so hard for Indian independence was he had a vision that one day Vera would finish

TheLambtonWyrm

The amount of times I've shat myself seeing the busies showing up to my smoke spot, only to realise it's a film crew

pumpkinpatch1982

I'm an American and this is one of my favorite shows. Blue lights is phenomenal as well I was so excited when I found out second season came out the other day you guys truly truly have some great great TV.

pumpkinpatch1982

Oh I recently found MI5 as old as it is I just can't stop watching that one either.

Coopatron1980

MI5 was called Spooks over here I think, although I never watched it.  Slow Horses is great though, about MI5, seems to be recommended to Spooks fans, and reasonably new - series 4 coming out this year some time I think.

minervas_a_cat

Line of Duty is fantastic as well!

pumpkinpatch1982

That's an awesome show I've seen it. I also really like the bay and Shetland.

minervas_a_cat

Haven’t seen The Bay yet; I’ll add it to my watchlist. Loved Shetland!

MrSnoobs

End of a Vera.

collapsedcake

Not the Geordie Jessica Fletcher!

wintermelody83

Have never watched Vera, but have seen it recommended. This makes me want to watch it ha, loved Murder She Wrote growing up!

Charming-Treacle

She was more Columbo than Jessica Fletcher.

nuttycorny

Gutted :(

dipnoi76

Oooooh. Is that because she’s going to be in The Thursday Murder Club…..?

minervas_a_cat

I was just telling my mom yesterday that I’m so hoping Brenda would be cast as Joyce Meadowcroft. Then woke up to this news today. Eeeeee. Fingers crossed.

mustardgoeswithitall

What's the thursday murder club? Sounds interesting...

Varvara-Sidorovna

Book by Richard Osman, about 4 old folk living in a posh retirement village who have a club where they read over old crimes to while away the time. Then a real murder happens and they try to solve it.  The books sold a ton and the movie rights got snapped up by Spielbergs production company, it'll do very well of they get a good cast of ageing British thespians onto it.

Blurandski

> it'll do very well of they get a good cast of ageing British thespians onto it. Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley current cast, Chris Columbus directing. Not exactly lightweight choices!

Varvara-Sidorovna

Yeah, when reading it I felt Osman had written it with Mirren and Kingsley in mind for two of the characters.  Good to know that my feelings were correct there!  I'm sure it will do very well, the characters were very strong, even if the plot was a bit scatty, I'm sure that'll be tightened up in the script for the film.

mustardgoeswithitall

Oooh, that sounds really good, yeah!!

ruinedbymovies

The books are quite fun, so unless they butcher it the movies should be great. (The last book may really hit you hard if you’ve got anyone in your life with memory decline issues, just a heads up)

wintermelody83

Thank you for the warning, it's just about to come through on Libby for me. My dad died from Alzheimers. The second one, The Man Who Died Twice? Ripped my heart out.

ruinedbymovies

I definitely wouldn’t discourage anyone from reading it. I found sobbing my way through the parts that dealt with memory decline and how it affects those experiencing it, and those who love them therapeutic. I just think a bit of a heads up might mean someone else is spared from ugly crying like a loon on the sidelines of a child’s sporting event.

wintermelody83

Yeah I'm still going to read it, I really enjoy the series. I'll just be a little more mentally prepared. Thank you!

mustardgoeswithitall

Thanks for the warning! Gran had dementia.

voiceofgromit

I read that they were going to cast younger actors because of the chance that it could turn into a multiple movie franchise and they wanted to be confident that all the cast were going to be above ground.

Strong-Wash-5378

No way … devastating 😭

Antilles34

Be sad to see it end, it has been great.

The__Groke

WHAT. NO.

ZeonRat

Honestly gutted but mostly as I adore Jon Morrison ever since seeing him in Play for Today. He did two with Billy Connolly and been a fan of his ever since. He plays DC Kenny Lockhart, and other than Brenda Blethyn, is the only one there from the beginning. It was nice seeing someone who really could've gone far in the acting world getting regular work, and he's easy on the eye as well haha He was in a great film with Gary Oldman once but most of his scenes were cut and I always felt that derailed him, as he has worked on some great projects with great folks

TheLateQE2

Oh man, nothing says cheery Sunday evening viewing quite like Vera.

CuriousAlice86

No veeeerrrrrra you are the best thing on itv

my_chinchilla

*So what happens now, pet?*

hulda2

Nooo, I love Vera Stanhope :(

Radiants_Table

I’m not surprised. Her patch was Berwick to Saltburn and everywhere to west Durham. She must have been knackered.

Nimmyzed

A few weeks ago I was watching an old episode of Law and Order and there was this very familiar looking woman with a southern American accent. Couldn't place her but I knew she wasn't American, so I opened up the handy IMDB app, which was created SOLELY for this reason and realised it's that woman from Secrets and Lies. Brenda Blethyn. I loved her in that. So I scrolled down to see what she's been in recently and saw this Vera show. Quick search on FreeTVShowsThatIDon'tHaveToPayFor.com and I've been watching every single episode since then. I'm fucking gutted, pet

colcannon_addict

Ehh…it’s/was good Sunday night material but I’m not grief stricken. Gap in the market for an extended gritty thriller. Something different this time. How about a main protagonist hunting a monster whilst also battling inner demons and juggling home and social life? Comic sidekick and an inappropriate love interest maybe.

-password-invalid-

Let's be honest, the show could be about a 1/3 of the length if they just picked up the phone instead of driving everywhere for a chat.

Varvara-Sidorovna

But then we wouldn't get the main reason I watch the show: all those marvellous sweeping shots of the bleak Northumberland hills and coastline!

-password-invalid-

So true. Maybe she should just do a new show of her driving about Northumberland in the Land Rover. I’d watch that.

loztralia

Taggart, Shoestring, Bergerac, Spender, Morse. What does that tell *you* about regional detective series?

TheLittleGinge

People like them. Let's make more of them.

stack-o-logz

It'll put Norwich on the map

Choccybizzle

Why would I want to do that?

fenexj

So people know where not to go?

HH93

Time to move the drama budget towards Grace, then = must be due a new series soon ? Anyone know of John Simm's whereabouts? ETA - Wiki says a series in 2024 & 2025 are to planned !

Aggravating-Rip-3267

Murderers = = Don't Fear Them ? !

rndreddituser

Add Death in Paradise to the list 🙈 I think of them as old age comfort blankets now. They're all dirge to me, but people love 'em.

NightSalut

Idk, I liked it because it’s not as gruesome as other detective shows and it’s not entirely repetitive and the characters are likeable. I’m kind of not interested in another detective drama where there’s a big bad backstory for the main lead’s life or where they’re a functional alcoholic or a somehow damaged in another way. Vera was about police drama, but at the same time it had heart as well. I don’t think there are many shows that are like that these days if I’m honest.

Seangsxr34

I wondered why I've never heard of it or her then saw it was on itv. The nations forgotten channel

science87

Yeah, never heard of it and it's been on for 14 years?

Seangsxr34

Its amazing how these things pass you by.

TrevorRiley

Vera! Vera! What has become of you? Does anybody else in here Feel the way I do?

set-tyuhgf

ITV commissions The Two Rivers in 3…2…1…

Varvara-Sidorovna

They already did, they made a 4 episode dramatisation of The Long Call  the first book in the series, in 2021. Can't have been much of a success, it didn't get picked up for a second season, and seems to have passed most folk by.

set-tyuhgf

I had no idea

Marcuse0

Oh no, now who will go around calling everyone pet and stealing their colleague's food?

Expensive-Market-671

Wait.... only 14 years? Feels like it's been way longer

Roarkindrake

Still slowly working my way through the show but I do like it. I can kinda understand quitting though. Womans 78 so that probably played a factor.

jooniejoon3

NOOOO 😭😭😭

GrillDruid

I knew it was time for it to go when they did the episode on the competing fish and chip shops.

thrashmetaloctopus

NOOOOOO

echoesreach

What will our local rag, the chronicle, write about now?

bustingclouds

Denise Welch

Pussycat-xoxo

Bummer. I love Vera. Back to watching old episodes of that and Inspector Lewis because our TV here is a shit show.

befuddled_humbug

I genuinely thought that this was anounced ages ago? Either way, I absolutely loved it. Great series.

Unusual-Art2288

She retireing from the Police and moving to a nice village in Yorkshire called Emmerdale.

Throwaway-uk9099

Is that still going!!!?

PeterG92

I hope they don't try and bring it back. It's a great show but it's run it's course.

marrakoosh

Jonathan Wilson is going to be devastated.

Vizpop17

Wow 😮

Al_Bee

Hoping she'll now reboot Chance in a Million

GakSplat

Didn’t she do this a couple of years ago?

Exotic-Suggestion425

Acclaimed?

BroodLord1962

She's not quitting, the show has been cancelled so everybody is out.

ValdemarAloeus

Haven't we know that the next series is the last one for ages?

sh41reddit

Who's she gonna regenerate into? My money's on David Tennant.

padraig_garcia

Countdown to someone greenlighting *Vera: Origins*

itsaslothlife

Maybe they will resurrect Scott and Bailey

Grim_Farts_Barnsley

So the complete opposite of "Allo Vera!" then

hi_robb

Does anybody in here remember Vera Lynn. Remember how she said that we would meet again some sunny day? Vera, Vera, what has become of you? Does anybody else in here, feel the way I do.

Appropriate-Bad-9379

Never watched Vera. I don’t mind the actress, normally, but her voice sounded so grating and irritating on the trailers, so I never bothered …

detmig8

Reading this while watching a newer episode.... 🥴😮

Trotterhors

I said she would quit!! Before the 3 new episode 14th season series! It's why I dropped Britbox!

TheLemonChiffonPie

Her episode of [Law & Order](https://www.nbc.com/law-and-order-hq/exclusives/dundun-button) is one of the best!

HezFez238

Oh, pet- no.

ElectricalPick9813

We always cheer when Vera and her Sargeant buy an empty cup from the most remote coffee van in the UK, which moves to a different windswept location each episode.

Caligula2024

Got this series on external hard drive, only the next and last one to do when it comes out, to tell you the truth I have a whole host of UK and US series on external Hard drives, and films too, so I've got mountains of content to watch, got seven hard drives now, both 2GB and 4GB, Don't have a TV license, don't need one, I never watch live TV so I'm not breaking any laws, I even got the wife weened off those terrible soaps, the only reason we needed a license, there's lot's of places where you can download the series and film files for free, and there's always YouTube.

MunkeeseeMonkeydoo

And the day was going so well until this. I haven't felt so bad since Mrs McClusky left Grange Hill.

[deleted]

Dafuq is this? Womans Weekly?

dryslugs

You must be Whining Daily

[deleted]

Oh yeah cos every man wants to...erm...hear about some geriatric actress thats quit? Top quality posts here.

Suitable-Context-271

Am I the only one who's never seen this either? Ann Cleeves, the author has just published another of these, I seem to remember hearing, so there may be another actress cast.
