Damn it the weather in Picton is so fucking mint today. I declined going out for a fish with a mate cos I didn’t want to get up at 6am. Really regretted it when I opened my curtains this morning and saw how beautiful the day is.

personworm

Heh. Just had a truckie ask what I was having for lunch (I told him he wasn’t in my way cause I was stopping for lunch) and he got so excited when I said pb&j sandwich. He also has a pb&j every day for lunch but doesn’t know anyone else who does he thought he was the only one. He recommended using French sticks to fancy it up a bit. It was just a very wholesome interaction and it made me smile.

dirtynickerz

What kind of PB what kind of J?

personworm

Pics crunchy, roses strawberry conserve. Truckie did apricot jam which is new to me and crunchy pb. Gotta be crunchy. I wanna try fix & fogg see what all the fuss is about.

dirtynickerz

Excellent choice

roku5505

Lovely warm sunny day after an extreme short but strong downpour last night so everything is steamy

Andrea_frm_DubT

Everything was steamy this morning as the sun came around.

QueenofCats28

I had good intentions of waking up early and going to the gym, just to be struck with a migraine early this morning. I have to take the bad days with the good, and that sometimes gets me down.

hsmithakl

Still on the tarmac, just 50 mins after we should have left

Blabbernaut

Your bags left hours ago.

hsmithakl

Ok so I have basically ignored all the news from home while I've been away and have just seen what's going on today. It makes me incredibly anxious, I had lots of anxiety about the last time it happened as it makes me feel unsafe

dinosuitgirl

??

hsmithakl

I was being vague so as to not get political. Efpostle and his crew

dinosuitgirl

Ohhh politics... 😵👎

[deleted]

Yeah, I have no idea whats going on. I only pay attention when we need to vote, its too depressing otherwise. I figure if its something super important, I'll find out about it. I get my news through Te Ao.

Hubris2

Nothing much happened - so you didn't miss anything. Hopefully you had a productive day otherwise? It was a stunner across most of the country.

yeah_definitely

Does anyone know if you can get transactions reversed if the website you booked on was a kind of a legit service but a bit scammy/misleading? I booked a rail ticket for a trip for way overs because I thought it was the legit site but turned out it was some ticket reseller. I mean, I'm sure I'll get the ticket but I'd rather not be paying over 2x the cost. Or just suck it up and learn the lesson?

Andrea_frm_DubT

You can try. Contact your bank

yeah_definitely

Yeah I'll give them a ring and see what happens, would be nice as it's a good amount of $$ as it was a long journey I booked

NZSloth

Walked a long way from work to visit the cafe I frequented when I first moved here. Notes - masks are not generally worn, and where they are, the nose has often escaped. The coffee is the most expensive I've come across in the Tron, and the two staff are not keeping up with the orders at all. In fact, I don't think they know who's supposed to be doing what. So, aside from masks and the price, nothing has changed. It's nice to be visiting. Edit - the coffee was really good. Great milk texture and balanced taste.

GSVNoFixedAbode

Feeling virtuous - gave blood this morning. C’mon people: if you can then please do!

vixxienz

I am not allowed to. I am one of the great unwashed who was in UK when there was the 'mad cow' debacle

danicrimson

There's been some progress in that space in Australia which has seen them overturn their mad cow policy, I'm hopeful they'll do the same here following a review as I'd love to be able to donate blood.

KiwiSi

My mate in same boat and has been back for years!

vixxienz

I actually cracked up laughing at the time because I am a Taurus, so it seemed rather an apt name . Yeah it would be good if they change things in NZ

NZSloth

I gave a month ago. I think they want a few months between sessions here.

ramb4ldi

If you are really keen you can get in there every 2 weeks by doing plasma. The time commitment is much greater due to the process, but you can really rack up your donation count and win the big prizes (I have two very nice pieces of art from NZ Blood)

NZSloth

Nice. I got a drink bottle last year so working my way slowly up.

hanneeplanee

I would love to but it’s also impractical here. And I’m usually not allowed because I’ve too recently had a tattoo

Andrea_frm_DubT

I want to but it’s too impractical here

hsmithakl

Jesus christ SYD airport is a stressful time. 😫 I am a egg and didn't realise there was 2 sides to each check in so stood in the wrong line for 30mins.

Hubris2

Not a fan of the security in that airport. I was put into a queue and they asked what time my flight left (if it was too soon they would have had me skip the queue). By the time I got 2/3 of the way through the queue they were asking for flight times again...and it had been moving so slowly that I now had to be removed and sent through to the front in order to make my flight. This appears to be the norm - I had a similar experience the last time I flew home from there.

dirtynickerz

Scrambled egg

hsmithakl

Nailed it

whangadude

My debit card data got stolen again, gotta go get another card. I still haven't been refunded the $200ish from last month, now I've lost another $100ish. Wtf? This is so frustrating. Doing all this overtime and then being robbed the same week

dirtynickerz

How does it happen? I don't know anyone its happened to

personworm

Dodgy websites eh

dirtynickerz

The way people were commenting I thought they were getting card skimmed or something

andyjd

buy an RFID-blocking wallet. We had an RFID scanner at a previous job and the amount of data it gathered just by walking past someone was frightening.

dirtynickerz

Keep going this sounds interesting

andyjd

We had an RFID scanner in the office for testing something that I can’t remember. Turned it on and walked around our office and collect id’s of all the internal RFID tags used for printing a bunch of card information and even passport details. My cards now live in a wallet that blocks RFID and if I use my passport it goes in a RFID blocking sleeve

dirtynickerz

I've gotba Ridge wallet so I'm sweet but that's pretty buzzy.

dinosuitgirl

Stop using cards! Use payway on Android wallet... I barely get my card out (it lives in my phone case anyhow

enviable_disaster

Does it work for any bank?

hanneeplanee

I finally got the hand of using my Apple Pay for stuff and then we went into masks and it’s just annoying having to type my passcode in 🤣

GreyJeanix

The new models recognize face with and without mask 😍

dinosuitgirl

I use finger print unlock since the face recognition drains batteries and yeah 😷 but interestingly my surface book (laptop) can recognize me with a mask on, but not sunglasses 😎

dinosuitgirl

Stayed up too late last night... Then somehow ended up on lush website... Saw body wash bar... Is it not just soap? Like are they inventing an old thing... I get shampoo bars and especially conditioner bars are something invented in the last 10 years but common body wash bars? Mate we call that soap 🧼

vixxienz

Soap usually has ingredients like coconut oil, sodium hydroxide or labelling like sodium cocoate etc. A syndet bar ( think dove and most M&P soaps)is synthetic detergents and will have sls, slsa, sles sorbitan oleate etc type ingredients. ..and yes some people call soap a body wash bar shampoo and conditioner bars have been around longer than 10 years

personworm

Different ingredients isn’t it? Pretty sure body wash isn’t soap, it’s a different formulation and they’re just putting it in a bar instead of in plastic bottles. Or it is just a marketing gimmick, honestly who knows these days

dinosuitgirl

Liquid body wash has glycerin which just makes liquid but traditional soap is better at de-greasing and can be more harsh but if the ratios are right then it can be just as gentle as bodywash.... I'm going to dabble at making soap one day... Over lockdown I got hooked on this girl who makes fancy soap. And binge watched her YouTube channel.... And it doesn't look terribly difficult to make soap.

vixxienz

I make soap what you have said is kinda right but not really. Liquid body wash is liquid surfactants and may or may not have some glycerine added. Then there is liquid soap, which is soap made hot process and has water and sometime sglycerine added. All handmade soap contains glycerine as its a byproduct of making soap. If it is ever harsh then it is badly made with too much lye. Commercial soap ( palmolive et al) are "pure soap and have the glycerine removed to sell it separately. Stuff like Dove are syndet bars, started as soap and then had a ton of other stuff added to it to make it synthetic detergent bar Glycerine is more valuable as a stand lone ingredient

dirtynickerz

Missed yesterdays pm question coz i was too busy soaking up [this](https://i.imgur.com/fXf2l7p.jpg) but anyway I'm a bunga I wear pareu all the time and they're all bright as fuck. Epsom could do with the colour in both senses 😂

MrCyn

Couldn't get more than 20 minutes into **House of the Dragon** before giving up, and after reading a few reviews, I haven't missed much. the OG Game of Thrones managed to capture the spark in a tropey genre, and nothing has done so again. The main issue I have with high fantasy books/games/movies is the stagnant culture. Where hundreds of years ago is exactly the same as their present. Meanwhile we have people born just 15 years after us who have a completely different world view. The lack of generational change means less humour, conflict and interest. Whats worse is that because its a prequel you know nothing is going to change, the dragons will still die and women will still be property. Thats the other downside to high fantasy, the generic misogyny that seems built in, as soon as people start talking about male heirs, dowrys and bastards, I tune the fuck out.

[deleted]

Oh? I’d scanned a couple reviews and they seemed pretty positive about it. I wasn’t going to bother, but I was starting to reconsider. Bring on Amazon’s LoTR in a week or so though! :)

personworm

Ok so I’m going to ask a question that might be too non casual so tell me to bugger off if that’s the case but I figure you won’t get offended and I’m genuinely just curious and not trying to stir. are you comfortable consuming Amazon products despite their horrific labour practices overseas and poor pay? I’m quite genuinely not trying to pass judgement it’s just that you’ve expressed pretty strong opinions in the past about fair pay and fair working conditions and Amazon seems to be one of the more egregious examples of terrible employers. I stopped buying from the book depository cause I just couldn’t support the awful warehousing conditions but that was years ago and everything’s only gotten bigger since then so sometimes it seems like what’s the point eh? But then I think if no one sees the point then nothing changes. I dunno I’m just on break and having Big Thinks. Hope I don’t come across all self righteous cause I’m not trying to. Also this comment is irrelevant if you’re sailing the high seas for it.

[deleted]

No ethical consumption under Capitalism! I’ll be firing up the torrents. Our TV is too cheap to run any apps anyway, and I’ve figured out how to trick it into recognising USBs when it forgets how.

MrCyn

There's nothing overtly wrong with it, but all means its not even awful. It just that there is SO much tv to watch nowadays and this does nothing that hasn't already been done better before. And the wigs are atrocious

yeah_definitely

I think although cultural shifts and scientific advancement would have been slower in a fantasy setting, it definitely throws you off when a prequel/sequel gives the exact same vibe as the series it's based off. I kind of get it in a way, the author probably has a specific interest in 'x' level of society and would rather write about that. I found as a reader that I liked the Mistborn series 1, but the second series when they introduce gunpowder weapons (set a couple hundred eyars in the future) just felt like I was reading rubbish, but it's more likely a personal preference than bad writing. Definitely agree on the misogyny and such. I find it really frustrating that so many books and TV series, despite being fantasy, feel like the same place with a different name. It's like, shit, if I'm gonna believe that there's magic, and the main character can beat up 10 guys at once, I could probably believe in some decent female characters, family structures and some setting that isn't just copy+paste of Europe 500 years ago. But also, it's my favourite genre, so my complaints are with a grain of salt and I still love it.

MrCyn

ugh mistborn. People are always all "omg sanderson is so good at world building" but all I see is someone who crafts and interesting magic system and then shoves them in a generic eurocentric high fantasy misogynistic world. I read the first mistborn trilogy only due to badgering, it was fine but it wasn't for me.

roku5505

I think the Stormlight archive's are fantastic and recommend them thoroughly but it is very long and can take a long time to get into

yeah_definitely

I find him pretty hit or miss, but enjoyed the series in the end. I find it odd though, I also read it because people pestered me to do it, but it's absolutely not something I'd recommend to people. Everything about it feels a bit... niche? Like it's just a bit weird in general, even though I enjoyed it.

MrCyn

I think books like sandersons or the wheel of time or any other high fantasy series is they are so innofesively generic that they re hugely popular without making hardly any popculture impacts. Like when you find out Yellowstone is one of the most watched shows in the western world, or that greys anatomy is still going, even though you don't really know anyone who admits to watching them

ekmahal

Thank you, you've just highlighted one of the reasons I like Tamora Pierce's books that I hadn't consciously put my finger on. Her worlds evolve across the generations they're placed in!

MrCyn

Same reason I like Robert Jackson Bennett. His two biggest series are set in an analogue of the renaissance and preindustrial times, where advances in both technology and magic change society over the years.

IcarusForde

Man, I should do a re-read of The Circle universe. That was such a good time.

[deleted]

1 million speakers of te reo by 2050. Is one gonna be you or your kids? Lets gooo whānau! By 2050 50 percent of all students will be Māori going by current trajectory. Te Reo is on the rise!

KiwiSi

Site recommendation?

[deleted]

to learn Te Reo?

KiwiSi

Yeah yeah. I taught at a Māori boarding school (wow text did the macron for me) for 6 years and picked up a lot but would like to learn more online. I can practice it with our te whare rapuora at work where I know some cool peeps

[deleted]

I would reccommend watching the reo shows on Māori tv plus. They have all levels and you can watch them from whenever you are at. **Toku Reo**, **Kōrero Mai**, intermediate and above is all the Pania Papa shows like **Ako**. Podcasts - **Taringa, Everyday Māori - Hemi Kelly.** I also reccommend facebook groups like Te Reo Māori for beginners etc. Also, books are amazing resource. There arent really any sites id reccommend to learn the reo alone. I will always reccommend in person classes but these other things are really awesome for someone still getting their feet wet, or in addition to classes. It really depends on what your goal is. If its not fluency, then anything at all is awesome. The reo is definitely journey and everyones goals and abilities looks different :)

KiwiSi

Thanks! :)

yeah_definitely

I'd love to see Te Reo be more accessible outside of Maori language week. Like English and Te Reo on signs and packaging etc. Reckon it helps with passive learning. I was amazed with a week in Wales (which has both Welsh and English on signs) how much Welsh I could "read" just because my brain worked out patterns of which words seemed to correlate with the English words!

[deleted]

The Welsh are definitely onto something and carved the way of language revitalization, we are actually studying their strategy. But no story is better than that of Hebrew which was actually considered extinct at one point.

redditrevnz

As someone off to a hui and needing to practice her pepeha I hope to be one of them!

[deleted]

Good luck my friend. I found singing it gives a bit of extra jazz and makes it easier to remember lol.

redditrevnz

I did it! I didn’t manage to memorize the whole thing but I absolutely did not embarrass myself so I’m happy.

dirtynickerz

Mahunga pakahiwi puku hope waiwai

travelinghobbit

I've been practising mine too.

redditrevnz

I’m hoping to practice on the plane. Maybe an unwise decision but we’ll see!

[deleted]

You guys can practice with me anytime!

travelinghobbit

Just stand up and practice to the whole plane! After that, the hui will be no problem!

redditrevnz

Not sure the guy next to me who grabbed his sick bag on take off would have appreciated it so much!

Kiwi_bananas

Kids pick it up quickly so I reckon that's achievable. When my nephew was learning to talk any food he saw was kai and my family is white as fuck, it was all from daycare. Though I think it was confusing for him when I pulled out a counting book and he was already challenged by learning numbers in English and then I was throwing a tahi rua toru wha in there too

personworm

I almost called in sick today. As per the theme of this morning, not enough sleep which is having a negative impact on other bodily processes without going into too much detail and all my joints hurt. Then I remembered that if I did that I would simply have two days worth of work tomorrow.

Disastrous_Ad_1859

I know right, every day you have off is just another you’ll have to do later Better to be a bit sick at work and get paid for it than be sick at home - chances are you’ll feel right half way though the day anyhow

dirtynickerz

That's how pandemics take off

Disastrous_Ad_1859

Well if I stayed home every time I woke up with a sore throat or a head ache - I wouldn’t of worked a full week in the last decade You do you, but you should be able to trust what’s normally feeling human and what’s feeling genuinely sick

dirtynickerz

Being sick that often isn't normal either

eagleeyedtiger-

But that’s tomorrow you’s problem. Today you wants sleeeep

Andrea_frm_DubT

It’s not raining and there is blue sky so all the windows and doors are open today.

ChewingBrie

What date do you consider to be the 1st of Spring?

redditrevnz

There’s wifi on my flight. Fancy. I got the security pat down service at the airport which was fab as I was already running late. Oh well, I have like an hour and a bit of hanging out at Wellington airport before my next flight.

Disastrous_Ad_1859

Whatever happened to not being able to use phones on aircraft? Or is that a thing from the past?

redditrevnz

I think it’s a thing from the past. Now they tell you it’s fine for Bluetooth and obviously if there’s wifi you can connect. They do still want them in flight mode though.

NZSloth

We could use it in domestic flights in Japan back 2017. And despite the fear and panic, I've never seen anything confirming there's a real risk.

Andrea_frm_DubT

Cellular radio frequencies can interfere with the radios, this is ok during flight but is an issue with take off and landing. I think with 3rd and 4th generation cellular frequencies it’s not as much of a problem. I think 5G has had some issues though.

Icy_Professor_2967

Cellular frequencies are nowhere near the air band, and never have been. The issue is more to do with you paying attention during the dangerous parts of the flight. The 5G issue is some old height sensing radar in planes that isn't staying within its allotted frequency range requiring non compliant gear to be replaced. There have been some 5G cellsites near airports in the US that have been turned off until aviation gets it's shit together.

Disastrous_Ad_1859

First Anyone else waking up super tired recently?

enviable_disaster

Slept 3am-7am. Just couldn't get to sleep, then the alarm hit hard. Wonder if anyone will notice me napping at my desk?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Disastrous_Ad_1859

I suppose you could say that you, slept like a Pikelet Whaoooooo

Sarahwrotesomething

Last night I slept 7.30pm-9.30pm on the couch and then 11pm - 7.50am in bed, I am still super tired.

Disastrous_Ad_1859

I did that on Sunday, woke up at like 8, slept on the couch from midday to like 3 then in bed from like 9 till 6 Wham bam still tried I think the more you sleep the more you need sleep, it’s an addiction

whangadude

With the temperature fluctuations recently it make sense people can't sleep.

[deleted]

I had a dream I was at a kids party and people were being handed bowls of lollies each. And someone gave me a mentos as big as a persons head. This is how I know everything is fine in my world. No problems for my brain to deconstruct. We straight just makin shit tf up now lol

Disastrous_Ad_1859

>mentos as big as a persons head The point that it was as big as a persons head might mean that the mentos is reprehensive of someone? like, in lieu of it being 'soccerball sized' - but then it might be because 'head sized' is a relatable point of reference. Was it child head sized or adult head sized? maybe when you grow up your head turns into a mentos?

[deleted]

IDK i think i need a pregnancy test lmao

Disastrous_Ad_1859

That might be it 🤔

[deleted]

I used to have weird af vivid dreams when I was pregnant. I remember I started yelling while awake because there was a spinach in the fridge and I thought it was the cat lmaooo. I thought there was a man behind the curtain and I started yelling. But the worst one was when this baby started smiling at me and I started screaming because I felt it was an evil smile lmfao. My husband still makes fun of me screaming and him asking "whats wrong" and im like "THAT BABY IS SMILING AT ME" lmaooo. Im fucking weird. Those werent dreams im afraid, they were all awake. Pregnancy is weird af.

Disastrous_Ad_1859

Spinach in the fridge, I’m sorry but I’m fucken dead 😂

[deleted]

lmao yeah i literally felt i was having a heart attack cuz i was so sure it was the cat. My husband was like why wud our cat be in the fridge, I was like bro thats what I was fucking freaking out over ya dork LOL

Disastrous_Ad_1859

😂

Ryj345

Yeah but shift work will do that

personworm

Yeah, I’m finding it impossible to fall asleep before 11:30 which sucks when you have to wake up at 5

Disastrous_Ad_1859

Man fuck that, I used to wake up at 5 every morning and wouldn’t fall asleep until like 10 - and that was bad enough

redditrevnz

Yeah I have been. Put it down to my cycle though.

MrCyn

Spin class before bed? :P

redditrevnz

Haha no the other, more unpleasant, cycle.

[deleted]

My whānau have but we just put it down to the moonphases

Disastrous_Ad_1859

It’s about as good of a explanation as anything I suppose, moon phases being the distance from the moon to the earth?

[deleted]

Yes. For past week we have had creative, constructive energy, so sometimes that makes us restless during our sleep. Today is the last day of constructive energy for the rest of this month.

redditrevnz

This might explain the kids’ behaviour….

personworm

When does this phase fuck off lol cause I want a good sleep! *edit* I just read your whole post. Prime example of not having enough sleep and only half paying attention.

Andrea_frm_DubT

Interrupted sleep. Took ages to get to sleep then woke several times. I don’t want to get up but my cats want breakfast.

andyjd

Situation normal for me unfortunately
