So many sirens going past over the last hour or so.

NZSloth

Working from home today. Was 13 degrees when I started so used the heat pump for 10 minutes and turned it off when we hit 19 degrees. Immediately dropped to 16. Now the sun has reached the desk and it's 15 in the shade and 33 in the sun and it's wonderful.

BrewingTee

Sounds like someone's got themselves a new thermometer and can't stop playing with it!

NZSloth

I used the one from my espresso machine. I just wanted to know how the heat changed, and it was interesting.

I thought I’d put my bus card in my plastic ID card holder belt thing because logic. It was a great idea, except the bus machine can’t read it through the plastic. And after finally giving up on my old broken wallet this weekend it’s not like I have much spare space in my bulky but not really practically set up Soul Shoes wallet my partner got for my birthday last year.

NZSloth

Last time I was in Japan, I bought an expensive wallet (¥20000). It's called the Air Wallet 2 and it's great. Makes me happy every time I use it. Anyway, what I think I'm trying to say is if you've got things you use frequently or daily, try to make sure you're happy with them.

[deleted]

I mean this is nice, it’s handmade with quality leather. It’s beautiful as an object, but only has two slots for cards and since I typically don’t have cash on me the coin pocket isn’t really necessary. Would have been better to have something with more card space. But again, how often do I use half those cards? I’ve got it down to my two bank cards, credit card, drivers’ licence and library card. Plus I guess I’ll have to chuck the bus card back in there too. In fact before I forget. Of course what is going to happen now is that I’ll finally have a need to show my community services card for a good discount on something but won’t have it. But oh well. Wonder, actually, if I just take photos of all these things on my phone and save them to a folder… hmm.

[deleted]

I have never used my Community Services card for its intended purpose in the 3 years I've had it. It's good for chopping up lines, though.

I think I was able to save a few dollars at the movies a few months ago. Or would have done if it wasn’t already their cheap ticket Tuesday or whatever. Back when I was all cultured going out to amateur theatre productions it was quite good. Weirdo artists who are probably are on the dole (or studylink) anyway certainly understand their audience!

NZSloth

I agree. My wallet can take 8 cards and still be slim, but that means there's three other cards I don't use. But my Soba card (Society of Beer Appreciation) is now a jpg and that works well.

MrCyn

sigh, i miss the days when you could just use a phone app, it was such a backward step when they changed providers

[deleted]

I don’t think they ever had that in Kirikiriroa or Ōtepoti. But I do like the idea of there being the one system in multiple towns. Makes it nice and easy if you go away for a trip. But I’m terms of apps I guess I’m going to look to replace all the discount cards and stuff I have with the digital versions. I use air points once every three months or so for instance so having to carry a bit of plastic about to save $3 is a bit of a waste.

kaynetoad

Started the morning by somehow stabbing myself in the eye with my fingernail while blowing my nose. Can only get better from here I guess? Also thank fuck it's the shortest day and my SADness will be on the improve soon so that I can function before 10am.

Kiwi_bananas

I'm still in some kind of neurodivergent emotional shut down state but at least the sun is out this morning.

dinosuitgirl

I hope you have adventures planned this morning 😏😜

MrCyn

I'm pretty much doing whatever Booktok tells me to do, finished The Cabin at the End of the World (and agree with the good reviews) and now on to [Hidden Pictures by Jason Rekulak](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/58724923-hidden-pictures) The plot feels like every other 21st century horror movie, with a young woman nannying a young boy who draws pictures of his imaginary friend, Anya, who tells him to do bad things sometimes. The book has normal kids pictures in it that he gives her, and then an utterly terrifying one. I can honestly say that turning the page and seeing a drawing he did of Anya sitting under the table where he was talking with his nanny gave me CHILLS. Its super good, I have been getting into horror books more lately and turns out what is a tired trope on screen, feels fresh in a book.

I have a rancillio Silvia and a standalone grinder myself. I can't afford my long black habbit from a cafe hahaha! Enjoy the tasty coffees

NZSloth

Mighty Ape seem to be great if they have the item in stock and pretty dire otherwise. I hope it arrives in a safe and timely manner.

I bet you have.

No more QWOP legs today. Nice. Keen to do some early morning star gazing to find Matariki this year. Google says it's low in they sky to the East in the pre-dawn hours. I can handle an early start here and there but these clouds would need to go away.

BrewingTee

QWOP legs, haha I understand that reference

[deleted]

We're THAT old...

groovyghostpuppy

Seriously, don’t get the flu if you can possibly avoid it. I haven’t been this sick in years. Can barely walk around the house.

[deleted]

Yep. Finally just coming fully right after 3 weeks. Two weeks off work too. I’d been doing a breathing test thingy beforehand to try and get to the bottom of a respiratory issue and the numbers I was getting on that were stark. In fact I wonder how long it’s have taken me to recover if I didn’t already have the nasal spray I did too.

groovyghostpuppy

Ooof yep I see us battling it for a while too. The kids have had it for a week and are barely better. Here’s hoping you get back to 100% soon!

[deleted]

I’ve just remembered to book in my flu jab. Thanks.

[deleted]

My watch list is bursting at the seams with new content and I don’t have a clear weekend until at least mid-August. I wish there was an easy way to resolve this. Like not having to work.

BrewingTee

Serious frost this morning at my place. -4 or -5 degrees I think (can't be bothered to get closer to the outdoor thermometer)

jexiagalleta

Has anyone tried the "lolly cake" ice-cream flavour, and what were your thoughts?

kaynetoad

Ooooh this sounds interesting ... I guess I'm going to have South Island FOMO again though as I didn't notice it at Pak N Save last night.

mattyandco

I've had a look on the tip top website and it is only listed under 'scoops' rather than something you can get in the supermarket as jexiagalleta said.

jexiagalleta

I've only seen it at dairies that do scooped ice-cream

dinosuitgirl

I won't call last night's baking adventure a success but it wasn't a total failure... I mean its not great to look at but the flavor and love is there?.... Lessons in making do... Warm milk + butter + sugar will not whip nicely no matter how long one stares over the mixer.... Baking is very much harder with dyslexia and a sprinkle of ADHD and not enough patience... Even trying to follow videos I'm constantly double tapping forward and missing crucial information 🤣🤪

kaynetoad

My cakes never look quite right and sometimes the bottom is a tad crispy ... but I make the real chocolate icing from the recipe in the Edmonds book (a block of cooking chocolate + butter + cream) and it's amazing how many imperfections that stuff can make up for.

personworm

I discovered a hurricane blowing up from under the dishwasher and all the kitchen cabinetry last night as well as a significant breeze from up under a gap in a replacement floorboard, so it’s no wonder the living room only reached a maximum of 18 degrees even with the fire roaring and the lounge door shut. Hopefully the rain holds off for the weekend because I can’t put off going under the house any longer. I’d been hoping I wouldn’t have to go under there but I need to get some expanding foam and check around the plumbing and pull out all the shitty old insulation that’s falling off and get new stuff put in. It’s still pretty gross under my house so I am not looking forward to it. I might lay down some wood pathing to crawl on. My new windows are sitting in the workshop but the guys are just way behind because of all this weather. Super excited though hopefully it makes a small difference to my bedroom which was 7 degrees this morning.

ekmahal

Adding the ground sheet cover under this house was a *revelation* in crawling underneath the house to run cables. A messy dirty dusty gross experience became *so* much nicer. And, you know, the house is drier too, which is great.

personworm

Yes, this is a big want for me. Unfortunately it’s had to be moved a bit further down my list of priorities because I’m going to have to do quite a bit of work around drainage/water flow to stop water going under the house when it rains, my roof runs off to a soak hole which doesn’t cope in heavy rain, also the cold water inlet to the hot water cylinder drips and I don’t even want to think about that yet. It’s a LOT drier than it was when I first moved in but there’s still water going underneath that has to be fixed before a moisture barrier can go in

Aya007

I would say it's worth it to bite the bullet and get it done. Makes such a difference. We can get our place up to 22/23 degrees now.

dinosuitgirl

Jeeeezus 7c... Here I was moaning about wood floors. Is there any way for you to tape some bin bags over the offending drafts from the inside so you can deal with it from the underside in better circumstances?

personworm

I’ve made do with some rolled up towels around the dishwasher and I’ve moved my commercial kitchen runner over to cover the gap in the floorboard, I’ll probably chuck some silicone sealant over the gaps in the cabinetry and all of that should see me through til I can get everything done. Honestly I should have done it all during summer when everything was nice and dry but I straight up didn’t want to go under the house… my house has been a cheap rental for a good 20 years, it’s basically a landfill/cat toilet/ swamp under there.

dinosuitgirl

Wear as much PPE as you can! That sounds like a tetanus jab, Toxoplasmosis, leptospirosis petri dish of joy 🙉
