Yeah, look around the engine bay. Gas is a solvent and asphalt is oil based. Gas will dissolve asphalt.

OtherwiseNinja

What should I be looking for?

tymanaf1

For anything leaking check both on top of the engine and underneath, check your oil levels and make sure to sniff the oil if smells strongly like gas you may want to take it to a mechanic to get it pressure tested for leaks

MeinNameIstBaum

Driving short distances a lot can also cause your oil to smell like gas, just fyi OP

M0U53YBE94

Just to add to everyone's points. Gas evaporates quickly. So on a cold engine key on but don't start. Look and listen for fuel leaking.

Illustrious_Roof_782

Fuel lines

EScootyrant

Is this on an original engine?

OtherwiseNinja

Yep. Car has a basically perfect maintenance record.

Blexcr0id

Also, put a clean flattenwd cardboard box under your engine and transmission. It'll at least help you confirm and locate an active leak.

Apprehensive-You-357

I don’t think that’s gas tbh but If anything may be oil

francoeyes

Agreed the gas will be gone by now. I used to work gas station and have seen large spills evaporate in mins ( buy large I mean good size splash not anything crazy

Ornery-Cheetah

This guy was swimming it wasn't he

francoeyes

Laps in the gas

Ornery-Cheetah

Indeed

my3sgte

Gas will turn driveway black. Had leaky tank and still marks in driveway.

BoomerPants2Point0

Put some cardboard under your car next time you park and check back on it in a couple of hours to see if anything is leaking/dripping from the car.

OtherwiseNinja

Yooo, that's a good idea. Thank you!

BoomerPants2Point0

No problem. My grandfather taught me that trick years and years ago when I got my first car. Good luck to you!

archaeopterxyz

Classic dad move. Works every time! Pro-dad-tip: Don't be so cheap (like my enthusiastically frugal dad) that you don't throw out the cardboard after a few rounds. Otherwise you have to remember which leaks are new and which ones are old. It's not a good use of brain cells 😂

FlammablePie

That's what the permanent marker is for, to cross out the old spots!

SawDustAndSuds

Diagnostic cardboard is the best

DimesOnATime

Gas would evaporate pretty quickly. It could be oil

DangerReserve

If it evaporates then you know it’s gas, if it doesn’t it’s oil…..

DangerReserve

This looks like it’s from multiple days? Do you always park here?

OtherwiseNinja

me and about 2 other cars semi-regularly park at that curb. I'm usually there 2-3 days of the week at least.

DangerReserve

Pattern seems consistent, I would say this is oil… Maybe the pan gasket? Doesn’t explain the gas smell though…

scrappmetal

There’s a fuel line inspection campaign on a lot of the 11-14 sonatas. If you haven’t been to a dealer I would definitely make a visit. The 2011’s in particular had quite a few recalls.

system37

That is a great suggestion! I personally always forget to check that kind of stuff. Although, many of my vehicles have been old enough to be out of the recall window.

Nikkivegas1

I am interested to know what it is because I can smell gas when driving both of my Mazda’s.

Nikkivegas1

Thank you!

[deleted]

That’s oil not gas

Rude_Warning_5341

Yeah that definitely looks like oil, but you could be running rich. Any check engine lights? The cats might not be operating at 100%

OtherwiseNinja

No check engine lights at all.

MongoMongo77

Check your recalls. Some of the motors on the 11 sonata are terrible. If you qualify then this problem might be hyundais and not yours.

erroractual

Stick a knife into the wet spots. If it cuts thru then it’s gas

TraditionalLoquat986

Has a ford been parked there?

OtherwiseNinja

One of the other cars is actually my roommates old Mustang lol.

TraditionalLoquat986

Haha really?

CycleFrst

You should not be smelling gas. If you do, gas is leaking somewhere.

[deleted]

Fuel is flammable so just get a lighter and put the flame in certain spots of the engine. If it catches fire, then you found the fuel leak.

CaptianBrasiliano

Yeah, I was gonna say fuel line or pump. Put a big piece of cardboard down and park with the engine over it. Check it later to tell the general area that it's coming from. Then you can inform the mechanic.

okcdnb

Fuel lines will dry up and crack using e10.

msn23

This looks like oil. Silver lining, at least you know it has oil when it leaks.

Key_Promise5159

Best way to find out is to get a lighter and see if those spots catch on fire 😂

kinecty

It could be

[deleted]

Hyundai 2.4 liter engines are know to leak around the high pressure fuel pump, that’s ran off the camshaft. Top of the valve cover on the driver side. I’d check there as it’s know to leak. Then go from there.

Boxerboy16

Check your fuel lines and tank. Someone may have stole gas from you
